"You think by being subtle or being nice, you're really being nice, but you're not, you're just being passive agressive." Epic quote

Totally agree.
Yes but not everyone can afford it.
better, to pay half rent
I strongly agree i end up paying the hole thing and he just living for free
I had a roommate I met through church who was regularly late with the rent. He seemed less stressed than me about his tardiness. I recall he complained about money problems but that didn't stop him from buying a nice car.

Why I never had a roommate. I have lived in some small apartments to avoid having a roommate 😂😅😂
where i live a one bedroom cost more than two bedroom
Then you may as well get the two bedroom and enjoy the extra room! Perhaps turn it into an Office, that's what I'm doing.
I live in a four bedroom house. Its not like to be like that forever since base on demand.
This is my first time being in an apartment without roommates.....absolutely love it
I’m currently living with my sister she charges me 250 a month but she said I’m finna go upabout to start paying 350 but I don’t use light or water cause I works most of time and be at home for like 1 or 2 days because I at work plus I don’t have my own
It takes courage to be up-front like that. Kindness takes courage. Being a person of integrity definitely takes courage. Thanks Uncle Dave!

Hi Bibi.
I left a note for Felix who did not go to work today, of course. I want to be honest with you, Bibi. I will not live in darkness.
If Felix does not help me with the electric bill, I will disconnect the electricity upstairs and move out. It is in his best interest to be fair and adult about the bills. The choice is his, honestly.
The main reason why Felix and I are not talking is simple: He wants me to stay with him as a roommate. The answer is no!! I have the right to select the people I want to be in touch with. Agree?
I am 57 years old. He is 47. I gave him too many chances to behave like a responsible adult. He failed over and over and over again. A person can only take so much abuse, Bibi. I hope your mom is ok and in good health. Good night.

I used to live with 2 sisters and we got into a heated argument and they left, leaving me to pay a huge rent. The electricity and gas was in their name, which they turned off the following day. It was really hard to get a roommate due to the high rent. My saving grace was my parents, not financially but what values and lifeskills in particular finances and budgeting. I was in college and my income was on minimum wage. I cut everything - it was a struggle but I survived. I will NEVER, EVER again will I get a flatmate.
I'm so sorry for you. I'm going through the exact same situation. I'm losing approximately $4200

And you have stopped paying? What is your explanation..."
My brother was my roommate, never paid on time and mom begged me not to put him out.. it was an awful situation.

True!!
Easiest fix: no roommates.
I ceased having roommates 25 years ago so I don’t have to put up with any more nonsense.
It works.
I had a roommate do this when I was 19. I talked about it once, then I immediately moved out.

In Canada, room mates have no rights. One room mate of mine wasn’t paying rent, so overnight, I changed the locks. Cops can’t kick people out but they can’t force you to unlock your door for a room mate either. Room mates do not have tenant rights. Life was great after.
I’ve had roommates like this, I told them how much the bills will be monthly, way in advance expecting them to put it aside (as I do) so as not to be late, and not once have they and when I ask for it to pay the bills I get the “ I can’t pay until I get paid in two weeks” .... ok. I’ve tried helping them with their finances, showed them every dollar, got everything sorted and they just didn’t use it. Still asking me for money every once and a while even with them having multiple jobs. Not sure where all their money goes. I will be very happy when I can afford my own place.
mandykiwi time for new roommates!
Had a relative who received a nice cash gift from his Mom. Soon after he demanded more money from Mom. I asked what happened to it and suggested the Dave Ramsey budgeting course. He got angry - no interest in the course, even if someone paid for it - He wanted money. NOPE.
Toxic roommates are the worst
After several years of having roommates that were irresponsible when I moved to Arlington VA for a job I got an apartment by myself. Told myself if I need a second job it will be far better than dealing with what I did.

I learned a few lessons after a former roommate stiffed me over $600.
1. Try to get individual leases for each roommate instead of a single combined lease. If you have a single combined lease, make sure every roommate is on the lease.
2. DO NOT find a random roommate on Craigslist. Find someone in your church who you know and trust. The Bible has a specific procedure for handling disputes within the church.
3. Write a roommate agreement at the very beginning, even if you know and love your roommate.
I am in trouble...I leave with a roomate who refuse To take responsability of Her actions and refuse To sign an agreement in term of responsabilities... those yep sign are enough To telling me that I need To go
Rooming with friends is not always a good idea they can take advantage of the relationship that way and oftentimes the relationship can get ruined just because of their idea of responsibilities not being the same as yours. Most of the best roommates I had were people I never met before.
I stop having roommates 30 years ago. My life is more relax & stressfree. They always have money to go out to the movies, bars, concerts etc. Yet can't pay rent on time each month or not at all. Excuse after excuse. Then your stuck paying the entire rent each month. If you mention to them over & over your a consider a nag & too controlling.
This was a very refreshing rant! I'd love to hear Dave rant more on boundaries and stuff like this. Thanks! :-)
My brother pulled the same BS and he is working. He refused to pay utilities monthly then paid 2x in 1 month to make up for the bs. He dont get it utilities need to be paid monthly of course he is a 46 y/o mommas boy who mom still controls
Dave said "adulting" :D I love it!
I let my roommate live with me for close to six months. He was unemployed but eventually regained his employment. He makes bank in the oil industry. Anyway, I received a promotion at work an am moving to a new state. He has plenty of money coming in, but hasn't offered to pay me a penny. He could have offered to pay me back a hundred a month or something. A superb con artist, perhaps I was just ignorant. Be a kind person, but when it comes to money draw the line quickly.
Choronzon39 should have had a written contract with him. Then you could get it back.
Stupid tax! I've paid my fair share of that.
I've always had a written contract with roommates and fortunately no major issues that weren't easy enough to move away from. I did make the mistake of "helping" someone once who needed a couch to crash on for two weeks and it wasn't a pay rent situation so I didnt think to make a contract. The person tried to become a squatter and started abusing my cat. The police had to come help clear out.
Never let people stay at your place.
I had a roommate who I paid all the bills and he would pay me back later, sometimes a lot later, but he always would pay me back and did for 2 years. I only did that because I could trust him, and we are still good friends, that was like 6 years ago we lived together.
I watch this already knowing what needs to be done.
I moved in with a friend two months ago. He keeps promising to pay me back on rent, utilities, groceries ect. He's paid me back for all the personal debt he borrowed from me. $200 for a puppy, some money for food. Well now he's missed payment for May's rent and told me he won't be able to pay. He's had an entire month to search for a job but I haven't seen nor heard him searching for one. He says I knew he would be short on money when I decided to move in with him. Untrue. I said, you were short one week of April and I accepted it. When I confront him about money he gets super defensive and tells me to back off. I want to take him off the lease and kick him out.
I have roommates, several of them. But I own the house and they pay me. I use the money for extra house payment's and home improvements. Thanks to roommates, I'll be paying off my home a lot sooner.
Roommates aren't all bad.
I have a roommate and I’m being too nice. I feel like I’m putting now 90% into every thing. The Truck the hotel room etc. Granted he is waiting on SSDI. I’m blunt but way too nice.
I love the voice Dave makes when he is impersonating other people. It sounds like a Muppet.

I love Dave's Cleveland voice😀. Lol
No cats!! But you can have 15 kids... six dead cars in the driveway and an engine in the front yard, BUT NO DOGS!! LOL some landlords are in the wrong business.
Nick Keith i totally agree
that's actually because it's against the law to not allow renting people with kids. Trust me if they could deny kids they would they are more destructive than pets
To be unclear is to be unkind. I love it.
Love your videos
You can also have them sign their own contract, so if they don't pay, they get evicted, but you stay because you have your separate contract and you pay your rent.
Separate leases you mean?
Not that easy Dave. I have told my roommate to "click" the side gate and make sure it is shut 10 times in past 2 years because I have Dogs. She left gate open not too long ago. Gate is now padlocked.
I hear you Rams, I was a hockey 🏒 coach for over 20 years. Right on coach 👌
Thank you
It can be imperative to stay on top of the winning side of the rent.
And she didn't pay her rent, so out the door she went!
Thank u and good morning
If you are already renting they need to be on the lease and if you are the land lord you need a lease written up do not skip the legal processes they are there to protect you
This is hilarious!
I took in my homeless ex because it's the dead of winter and he has no other options. He doesn't pay anything and since he changed his address to mine I have to legally evict him. Just don't let anyone in.
If he doesn't pay rent he has no rights
@@athenalovesdance not true, if they live at the address, they have rights, unfortunately. You are stuck paying to evict.
going thru this right now 😢
What do you do if the meetings, verbal communication, emails don't work....I need serious advice because I have done all of this
What to do if the landlord is trying to have you pay the missing portion of rent ur roommate didn’t pay
Lol dave using "adulting".
Here is what not to do with a roommate. Don’t put them on as a Occupancy. You can’t have him evicted, matter fact you can’t have them evicted at all . Why because you don’t own the place. Even trying to kick them out won’t work I am going through this now three months none payment. My suggestion is YEAR UPFRONT AND DONT DO ROOMMATES EVER
It's called Adulting
Mine lead to a $9000 credit posting.. I paid direct deposit so I was on time. He stopped paying, got us evicted..
How can I unattach myself from this bill.???
That sucks. How'd it get to $9000? It it all rent or are there some fees?
I'm sure they will settle.
People sometimes mistake my being extra stern as kinda rough and mean but I'm upfront and simple like that. Part of my DNA.
I broke up with my ex and he currently lives with me because he told me he has no where to go. He has gone pretty much a full month without paying his part of his "agreed" rent. He hasn't mentioned nothing about paying. I've always been understanding to his situation of having two kids and paying child support. Even if something happen he could've told me like " look i'm broke"...but he hasn't said a peep. What yall think? Now that I asked him what his plans are. He's acting like I'm the devil. Do yall think hes taking advantage of me?
Yes, he very probably is taking advantage of you. If he was paying rent before you split and now is not, he's just freeloading.
I had a guy stay on my living room floor for several weeks after he got kicked out of the family home. When I tried to make efforts to help him find a place, he got angry. He ended up storming out and made himself homeless. The happy ending came when social services assessed him, got him into the YMCA hostel, and from there he got a job and got into his own place after 6 months.
Presumably you broke up with this guy because of bad behavior on his part. Now he is adding on more bad behavior, and it's costing you.
He needs to go room with friends or rent one room, and start building some independence. Even if he has gone through a hard time for some reason, he still needs to be a man and stop living off you.
And I think you need to be careful about who you let into your life. Pick guys who have a good record. Guys who have already left kids behind them may just be good men who are unlucky, but if they are fooling around or making babies like it's no big deal, run!
Yes, child support is not an excuse (and usually doesn't amount to that much $). A grown up must pay his way, kids or no kids.
Absolutely taking advantage of you. Do not pay for him, you have your own responsibilities.
You may have to move to get rid of him. I'm curious what happened 4 months later
He seems to be being passive aggresive. He is avoiding the problem by not confronting it but the only way to solve it is to have that conversation.
Savannah Will yes, he is taking advantage of you
He reuses to listen and locks himself in his room and never leaves it comes down to me having to move 😢. I rent from an apartment.
0:42 Where do I get me one of them android roommates?
Equally worse - volunteer to sit on a HOA board. People only show up to meetings to complain and they think you're management.
I think I'd put all of my stuff in storage and live in my van
I need help my ten year older less responsible brother is on the lease breaking things in the apartment hes on xanax really bad.. and he is very bitter controlling human being.. weve lived here for two months and basically i already have had three fights where i ended up having to beat him up.. its a three bedroom house im literally with my dog (landlord knows) in the smallest room stuck basically hes doing all sorts of stuff here where i dont want no parts of it .. im really regretting taking my older brother in i need help should i just go to the landlord and tell her and have her help wit the legal aspects
I have rental properties and I demand a large pet deposit. My tenants having a cat has never cost me $10 grand. I allow one cat per family and it must be spayed/neutered so there will be no spraying.
However, I will no longer rent to dog owners because of the chewing and the smell. I love dogs, but their smell lingers in the carpet and on the walls. Even the owners smell like their dogs. Not to mention the owners usually don't clean the poo out of the yard before they move.
What would you do if a current renter bought a dog?
Buffy, that would be a violation of the lease and I would evict them.
Do you make them pay for carpet cleaning when they move out (from their deposit)?
it was always college students chewing on things and peeing everywhere in the apartments
If your kitten is neutered and you keep him/her clean and brushed, and he uses his litter.... and you spray air freshener regularly, nothing smells! I'm so grateful our Landlord let us have a kitten. It's like a miracle in this neighbourhood where rents are sky high and pets are generally forbidden. Thank God we were the exceptions! I live for the sound of purring at night. 😺🐾
Mars TV by nikki bass air freshener isn't permanent
Then it stinks like febreze. Hey but as long as the landlord is cool with it there's no issue.
Pay your part!!!! enough
How do get them out on thecurb
What if the roommate is your father and feels entitled to your home
life is full of these grey decisions... just understand every choice you make has an impact on not only your surroundings but on your soul
I had a roommate who was "kindly blunt" and upfront. I heard them loud and clear but that made me (for the remaining time we lived together) keep them at an arm's length.
How can you befriend someone who's gonna be uptight about everything??
If you didn't pay your bill on time, you're the one that isn't trustworthy. I think they should be keeping you at an arm's length, not the other way around.

Your 3 favorite words aren't...gimme gimme gimme...right?
the landlord was the one who handled rent. For the record, I always paid my rent on time and cleaned up after myself.
I lived in several roommates. One of my roommates had a cat who would shed fur on the carpeted staircase. I didn't mind the fur. I don't sweat the small stuff. I just wasn't going to be that guy. Also, it wasn't my responsibility to complain to her about it. The landlord owns the building. He dropped by the apartment sometimes. If he had a problem, he'd take it up with her.
But my other roommate, he gave her such a hard time about it. He acted like he owned the place. He even made a sign up sheet of chores we had to do around the apartment. After seeing how he treated her over some cat fur and how strict he was in general, that was a turn off with me hanging out with him. Me and the girl hung out, I even let the cat hang out in my room. I was pretty chill. The other roommate had no chill.

Sounds like a responsible roomate to me.
I'd bet money after reading that you're not from the Northeast. "Uptight" about telling you to make sure things get done. That's life and blunt is better than being lied to or strung along.
How do you throw them out and they don’t leave?? And don’t pay rent
money not the only kind of payment.....

How about if the person is blind or physical disabled you won't rent because they have a service dog.
I think he has to ADA Act and companion animals do qualify. Dave knows a lot but he also does give out bad advice and seems to expect people to take it because hes a millionaire+
long as they don't cause issues in the ome, service animals have to be allowed
How bout they go rent somewhere that allow pets
If the guy say no pets y u wanna insist
Find somewhere else
Service dogs have special federal status.
Also most disabled people in the United States are unemployed or underemployed so very few of them qualify for an apartment.
Service dogs are very expensive and very highly trained.
For all those reasons it would seem service dogs wouldn't become a major issue. It's a very small niche.
What happens when your roommate is also your mother-in-law? Any time I bring up her being late on her bills, she cries. So I feel bad, front her bills, and don't approach the subject for a couple extra weeks the next time. We had the formal meeting upfront... Its a sticky situation.
...1st class emotional manipulation...
Oh you 😤; I love cats 💙🙂
Cats are great pets, Dave. They only spray and stink if you don't get male cats snipped. Still wouldn't want a tenant to have one though, because they claw stuff apart.
i guess i am alice...
Emotional Support Animal. Its the law.
Only dogs and miniature horses have federal protections as service animals.
The chances of a disabled tenant being about to afford rent and a service dog are pretty slim so that's a small group of potential tenants.
