I talk to my brain. I speak to it loudly. I tell it we are not in danger, tasks are good for us, it doesn't need to save us from them. At night I say "You did a good job today. Tomorrow there's a lot to do, so please rest. I love U."

Thank you, I'll start doing this too! Somewhere I heard the line "This is scary, not dangerous." and it's been one of the few mantras actually calming me down, whoever my anxiety hits. Validating the feeling, but putting reality into perspective.
Seeing this after spending the day procrastinating instead of studying for an upcoming exam brings on a whole new level of guilt... but it's comforting to know that it's a universal problem
it's universal up to a certain point, because if you wanted to get a good grade you'd naturally be inclined to study, the problem here is that you don't really wanna do it, and you need to force yourself, which makes it more difficult

Elizabeth!! You've reminded me of my love for journaling and how effective it has been in helping me go through life in tough times, sprinkled with self-loathing here and there! You are so eloquent, and your bravery for vulnerability is beautiful, it enabled me to see that hey, there are people who had similar struggles as me. Journaling/writing has been a tremendous help but I would also like to point out that it could be a tool that encourages rumination, even more than what I already tend to do. And there are times where I was way too anxious that I didn't have the capacity for coherent thoughts, much less an ability to properly hold a pen down and write. It took me too long to realize that sometimes, I just needed to breathe. And accept that I don't need to have everything figured out /right now/. I feel that I do best when I strike the balance between conscious processing such as journaling, self-talk, therapy, and the unconscious, such as breathing, taking a walk, singing, dancing, staring out at trees or the night sky for just a bit too long, and-- sleeping! The body keeps the score, after all. I'm wondering if this is an area that you have an interest in exploring? I absolutely adored how you described thought and cognitive processes, it made me super curious if you were to talk about your findings about topics that are less about cognition itself, and more about how the physical realm perceived by the body influenced cognition. Dialogue with Works reminds me of how Hans Zimmer writes his pieces for a lady and how he uses the music to take her away from her 9-5 job. It was in the latest Netflix documentary. I was happy to hear his views aligned with his teachings in the masterclass project he was apart of. This is amazing. I am wanting to work on a book helping people with this exact thing. My brain has been hijacked by short form content the last four years. I also had some unexpected "success" posting on other platforms, which makes it even more addicting. Going viral for years is not what I thought it would be. It has actually burned me out and overwhelmed me to the point that I struggle to even make videos anymore. The addiction to this little screen and the views I was getting started to warp my world and I have to pull myself out of it. It's actually one of the strangest things I have ever experienced. I never sat and scrolled for hours before short form content and the pandemic- I would listen to long form RUclips videos and podcasts and go on walks and I felt so much better than I do now...and even back then I was deeply worried about the time I spent online and on RUclips. I never fought with people online- I was never reading comments about myself... I never spent hours mindlessly being fed short videos....and I must go back to that. I was so much happier it's not even funny. Thank you for this must needed video.
It feels as though I have been personally analyzed and precisely described. While I know that these are general patterns of human psychology, they feel so personal firstly because they describe me accurately, and also because these are things that we do and feel but that we do not typically share or see in others. Too many of us are silently struggling to apply ourselves. It makes me imagine how much more I could achieve with better attention management, and how much more our society could achieve with the same skills. Your videos are always excellent, but I will be saving this one in particular to a very short playlist of videos that I occasionally revisit during moments of personal reflection. I would also like to express my appreciation for the included timestamps. Even just seeing the names of the chapters helps to internalize the concepts and recall them more easily. Thank you.
Recent years I've been struggling with loss of focus and symptoms similar to ADHD I'm not diagnosed BUT I've never had problems when I was younger this problem started when I was in high school after some family problems I noticed I'm getting worse especially when I stay on my phone some people tell me ADHD in women is different but I've NEVER had problems before I was top student studied and did my homework without struggle I wasn't hyperactive and my parents say I'm the easiest child growing up I just feel that internet and social media ...broke my brain in a way. I will try to gain my focus again with these journaling techniques thank you for this video!@

Hey Elizabeth, I have been watching your channel since 2023 and I love your content. It's very niche, creative, and engaging. This video feels like I'm watching a movie and I was completely immersed. And as a side note - please forgive me if this is weird for you - you look different like you seem clearer like you're transparent and iridescent mentally and it's showing up on camera.

Thanks Elizabeth! I look forward to your videos and will watch them from beginning to end. You have a gift of gab that is quite rare. Besides, it's rare to meet people so introspective and thoughtful. Never thought about anthropomorphizing my "to-do" list. I'm going to have to give that a try. Two more things: I was a huge fan of Freud growing up and used to read his books, and case studies fervently, but I never knew he had "journals". Will have to take a look at those too. Also, I learnt through another youtuber that we needed to talk to ourselves similarly to how we talk to our best friends. For instance, I can talk to myself quite negatively when I don't finish a project or task. I can be very difficult on myself, but I realized that I would never talk to my BFF like that. I would be much kinder when speaking with them about any issues they may have about life. I had to slowly learn to listen to my inner voice and modify its modality.
Elizabeth Filips is purely an 11/10, excellent information and me too! If the videos went faster than 2x I'd be all over that, but then I realized like wow, I'm taking in soo much information all day long and doing soo much that ahhhh anxiety!! I've gone back to 1x and make a point to watch content like this that I choose to watch, thanks youtube for the suggestions but I know what I want to watch! There is a point of too much and I bet most of us have reached it! I go sailing and skiing where I'm 100% focused on just those, it's like an attention reset. I think also our brains need rest in order to build on the things we learn, especially skills like an instrument, I thought practice everyday for at least an hour but hopefully 4 hours, then I experimented and I progressed more by practicing less often, I can suddenly play that really hard passage I struggled with practicing hard everyday, that rest period is essential to mastering a skill, it might not make a difference when you're a beginner but after 20 years of a skill, to get better is harder so you need genuine brain rest.

(I found your you tube channel again after having lost it due to losing my you tube channel access due to forgetting my password, and consuming so much other you tube content that I forgot about your channel. ;) I'm glad you're still creating videos and you totally deserve to be at almost 1 million subscribers.) As I am an internet addict, especially consuming videos to the point of debilitation/ utter neglect of performing essential tasks and projects in daily life, and long term projects, as you describe. I have no ability to sustain effort and organise myself effectively! I already do a little journaling, which is a start.

Big thanks on the unique videos and thoughts on the matter. The thing that I struggle with is actually not taking the breaks from journaling when I sit down to write on what is happening in my life. Like sometimes it is 5 minutes of writing, 3 minutes of looking aroud, etc. I guess it is just when I should start writing endlessly "my mind starts to wander" thousands time?
That sounds like an interesting challenge. If I were you, I would write down the question: What prevents me from writing? or: Why is my mind wandering when I want to write instead? And seeing what answers pop up.

Someone else may have already put this in a comment, but the five hindrances @23:40 are likely drawn from Buddhism. When the Five Hindrances were taught to me, they were Unskillful Doubt, Agitation, Sloth, Sense Desire, and Anger.
There are so many great things about this video but I think for me the highlight was your vulnerability, I honestly think there is no need to even say this cause I think for a lot of people it is clear that you are a hell of a brilliant person! I really appreciate your talent of abstracting logical ideas and philosophies that you have learned over the years. I have notice that you tend to find creative ways to tackle complex problems. The 'Dialogue with works' method of obtaining clarity and problem solving reminds me of a few different things that seem to have correlations: For one, when dealing with personal problems and challenges it's often hard to see the forest through the woods. For some reason it tends to be easier to offer insight and wisdom to friends and family that face challenges versus dealing with our own problems. So, in consideration of those factors, it can be very effective to reframe a personal problem and pretend another person has the same problem. Then, you posit, how would you treat this person and what would you tell them. Essentially, you're attaching a complex problem to a person that is not yourself. Furthermore, this method of abstracting an idea or challenge as a person reminded me of another philosophy. In Marie Kondo's book, it explored what she called the Japanese art of decluttering. She at one point imparts how the Japanese cultivates a respectful relationship with material items. Generally, with this idea, you would use an item to its fullest value, respect it while you have it, and essentially impart appreciation for the item and those who spent the time making it. Therefore, discarding an item would be a big deal, where you would express to it gratitude (even in your mind), as you would another person that has helped you and been part of your life. She adds to this philosophy to help people manage hoarding tendencies, big or small. In this way you can create a path to closure, respect and responsibility when you donate or discard something. People who have chronic hoarding problems already internalize shame and disappointment when they catch wind of the money, potential and time they have wasted when it comes to the material. And so, abstracting the material as an entity or partner that is deserving of respect, can be a strategy to facilitate releasing the item back into the world and away from its "prison,' where it can be properly utilized or appreciated. This externalizes the problem and, again, makes it easier to find a way to learn and move passed it. PS: The edits and pacing of your videos are phenomenal!

Great video Liz.👏 This was very relevant for me, and got me thinking about my relationship with screens and attention. Your "diaglogue with works" is totally sane and there's no need to apologize for that bit. It reminded me a lot of a kids book "The Day The Crayons Quit" where these crayons are super mad at this kid who's not using them in what they feel is a fair way, and they outline their grievances to the kid using them.
The Dialog with works, sounds a bit like IFS which has been very helpful to get stuff done because you can get to know these different parts and negotiate with them!

It has actually burned me out and overwhelmed me to the point that I struggle to even make videos anymore.
The addiction to this little screen and the views I was getting started to warp my world and I have to pull myself out of it.
It's actually one of the strangest things I have ever experienced. I never sat and scrolled for hours before short form content and the pandemic-
I would listen to long form RUclips videos and podcasts and go on walks and I felt so much better than I do now...and even back then I was deeply worried about the time I spent online and on RUclips. I never fought with people online- I was never reading comments about myself... I never spent hours mindlessly being fed short videos....and I must go back to that. I was so much happier it's not even funny. Thank you for this must needed video.
It feels as though I have been personally analyzed and precisely described. While I know that these are general patterns of human psychology, they feel so personal firstly because they describe me accurately, and also because these are things that we do and feel but that we do not typically share or see in others. Too many of us are silently struggling to apply ourselves. It makes me imagine how much more I could achieve with better attention management, and how much more our society could achieve with the same skills.
Your videos are always excellent, but I will be saving this one in particular to a very short playlist of videos that I occasionally revisit during moments of personal reflection. I would also like to express my appreciation for the included timestamps. Even just seeing the names of the chapters helps to internalize the concepts and recall them more easily.

Recent years I've been struggling with loss of focus and symptoms similar to ADHD I'm not diagnosed BUT I've never had problems when I was younger this problem started when I was in high school after some family problems I noticed I'm getting worse especially when I stay on my phone some people tell me ADHD in women is different but I've NEVER had problems before I was top student studied and did my homework without struggle I wasn't hyperactive and my parents say I'm the easiest child growing up I just feel that internet and social media ...broke my brain in a way. I will try to gain my focus again with these journaling techniques thank you for this video!@
it was incredibly helpful to hear just how much you use journaling. at times i've used it throughout the whole day, particularly through more challenging work days, but have found myself shying away from it, simply out of self-jusgement. Hey Elizabeth, I have been watching your channel since 2023 and I love your content. It's very niche, creative, and engaging. This video feels like I'm watching a movie and I was completely immersed. The classical music was a nice touch and I love the digital text and images on screen it looks so cool and techy. And as a side note - please forgive me if this is weird for you - you look different like you seem clearer like you're transparent and iridescent mentally and it's showing up on camera.

Never thought about anthropomorphizing my "to-do" list. I'm going to have to give that a try. Two more things:
I was a huge fan of Freud growing up and used to read his books, and case studies fervently, but I never knew he had "journals". Will have to take a look at those too.
Also, I learnt through another youtuber that we needed to talk to ourselves similarly to how we talk to our best friends. For instance, I can talk to myself quite negatively when I don't finish a project or task. I can be very difficult on myself, but I realized that I would never talk to my BFF like that. I would be much kinder when speaking with them about any issues they may have about life. I had to slowly learn to listen to my inner voice and modify its modality.

Elizabeth Filips is purely an 11/10, excellent information and me too! If the videos went faster than 2x I'd be all over that, but then I realized like wow, I'm taking in soo much information all day long and doing soo much that ahhhh anxiety!! I've gone back to 1x and make a point to watch content like this that I choose to watch, thanks youtube for the suggestions but I know what I want to watch! There is a point of too much and I bet most of us have reached it! I go sailing and skiing where I'm 100% focused on just those, it's like an attention reset. I think also our brains need rest in order to build on the things we learn, especially skills like an instrument, I thought practice everyday for at least an hour but hopefully 4 hours, then I experimented and I progressed more by practicing less often, I can suddenly play that really hard passage I struggled with practicing hard everyday, that rest period is essential to mastering a skill, it might not make a difference when you're a beginner but after 20 years of a skill, to get better is harder so you need genuine brain rest.

(I found your you tube channel again after having lost it due to losing my you tube channel access due to forgetting my password, and consuming so much other you tube content that I forgot about your channel. ;) I'm glad you're still creating videos and you totally deserve to be at almost 1 million subscribers.) As I am an internet addict, especially consuming videos to the point of debilitation/ utter neglect of performing essential tasks and projects in daily life, and long term projects, as you describe. I have no ability to sustain effort and organise myself effectively! I already do a little journaling, which is a start.
Will absolutely try that 2 writing exercises. Sounds extremely interesting to me for some reason. I'll update if possible.

Dialogue with works is from Ira Progoff's Intensive Journal Method. Really powerful process. He wrote At a Journal Workshop in 1975 plus several more.

Big thanks on the unique videos and thoughts on the matter. The thing that I struggle with is actually not taking the breaks from journaling when I sit down to write on what is happening in my life. Like sometimes it is 5 minutes of writing, 3 minutes of looking aroud, etc. I guess it is just when I should start writing endlessly "my mind starts to wander" thousands time?
That sounds like an interesting challenge. If I were you, I would write down the question: What prevents me from writing? or: Why is my mind wandering when I want to write instead? And seeing what answers pop up.

I really appreciate your talent of abstracting logical ideas and philosophies that you have learned over the years. I have notice that you tend to find creative ways to tackle complex problems. The 'Dialogue with works' method of obtaining clarity and problem solving reminds me of a few different things that seem to have correlations:
For one, when dealing with personal problems and challenges it's often hard to see the forest through the woods. For some reason it tends to be easier to offer insight and wisdom to friends and family that face challenges versus dealing with our own problems. So, in consideration of those factors, it can be very effective to reframe a personal problem and pretend another person has the same problem. Then, you posit, how would you treat this person and what would you tell them. Essentially, you're attaching a complex problem to a person that is not yourself.
Furthermore, this method of abstracting an idea or challenge as a person reminded me of another philosophy. In Marie Kondo's book, it explored what she called the Japanese art of decluttering. She at one point imparts how the Japanese cultivates a respectful relationship with material items. Generally, with this idea, you would use an item to its fullest value, respect it while you have it, and essentially impart appreciation for the item and those who spent the time making it. Therefore, discarding an item would be a big deal, where you would express to it gratitude (even in your mind), as you would another person that has helped you and been part of your life.
She adds to this philosophy to help people manage hoarding tendencies, big or small. In this way you can create a path to closure, respect and responsibility when you donate or discard something. People who have chronic hoarding problems already internalize shame and disappointment when they catch wind of the money, potential and time they have wasted when it comes to the material. And so, abstracting the material as an entity or partner that is deserving of respect, can be a strategy to facilitate releasing the item back into the world and away from its "prison,' where it can be properly utilized or appreciated. This externalizes the problem and, again, makes it easier to find a way to learn and move passed it.

(a small note: i personally prefer the video thumbnails that look less AI-like-your video contents feel very genuine, empathetic, and human, and the dramatic lighting and overly pristine look of AI images may have some disconnections and this look sometimes take on a click-baity connotation… I understand that you’re working with time and resource constraints so AI generated images might work better, so it’s up to you to decide what works for you. it’s just my personal opinion 😅
One thing I'm sure about is that your videos keep the viewers engaged and focused in this messy world of the net.

Your "diaglogue with works" is totally sane and there's no need to apologize for that bit. It reminded me a lot of a kids book "The Day The Crayons Quit" where these crayons are super mad at this kid who's not using them in what they feel is a fair way, and they outline their grievances to the kid using them.
