- Some time after release I finally got my hands on the Elgato Wave 3 USB microphone! Let's see what all the fuss is about.
NOTE: In this video I only discuss the build and sound of the mic, along with comparisons against the Shure MV7. I do not cover the Wave Link software seeing as that needs its own video.

I have the Wave 3 and agree that it doesn't pick up enough of the lows when first plugged in BUT you also have to make sure that you disable the Enhanced Lowcut Filter in the software. Turning that off helped a lot with the lows. I have a naturally deep voice and it sounds SOOOOO much more natural with that feature disabled.

I got the wave 3 and I’m loving it, they could of added a metal frame to it but it is what it is. The Sound is great on the wave 3 and the clip guard feature makes it better...
The shure was better at rejecting the clicking, but picked up EXPONENTIALLY more shock noises.
basically, the shure NEEDS a shock mount, desperately, whereas the elgato can live without a shock mount to a reasonable level.
Really nice review bud. Software is just a bonus.
Like others have said and from your conclusion, I also agree that YOUR voice sounds much better on the wave 3 out of the box. I think a lot of male streamers like to go for the "boom/podcast lows" (not sure if I'm describing that right) but you're voice is naturally like that and the wave 3 complements it very well.

It’s a great mic. Here’s a tip though I learned the hard way. DO NOT UPDATE THE FIRMWARE FOR THE MIC. I did that and it made my mic have this ugly reverb. Update the wave link software that’s cool but never update the mic firmware. Called Elgato they told me never update firmware lol. Luckily I was able to exchange it and get a new one easily.

In wave link software, your mic channel, there is a drop down menus for it where you adjust the mics volume. In that same menu there is a button to update firmware. Do not press it lol

Is this STILL a problem, or... because i suspect the button doesn't show up because i may have accidentally updated the firmware by installing Wave Link. :S
EDIT: Just found info on official Elgato website where they mention what products NOT to update firmware on, seems they fixed the Mic problem some time a go, because the Wave mics do not show up on that list anymore.

Frank, thank you for a great review. Love your style and attention to detail. I find myself currently comparing the Blue Yeti Nano and X to the Elgato Wave 3 as my final stage of elimination in a big field. I was particularly interested in this review due to the fact it compared it to the supposedly 'gold standard'; in PC audio capture - the XLR style of mic. This will be my first mic ever for my PC and I'm currently also researching a webcam - got that down to the Logitech Brio OR the Dell Ultrasharp 4K device. Both look good so that will be tough.
Back to the mics . . . I absolutely LOVE the look of the Blue Yeti range but many reviews say Elgato Wave 3 is the better mic with the twin mic setup to mitigate clipping. I think you demonstrated this well with the Peter Piper skit you did. I also noted that in the final typing test the Shure mic transmitted much 'thumping' of the finger impact on the desk through the keyboard whereas the Elgato did not - it just allowed us to hear some relatively quiet clicking. I actually thought the typing test was a big win for the Elgato but you surprised me by saying the Shure was preferable! Yes, it really is a shame the Elgato is plastic (Yeti is heavy metal man!!) but this seems to be it's ONLY drawback - probably helps to keep the price down though!
Mine new mic, whichever it eventually is, will sit next to the monitor on the desk so will probably never get touched. I'm NOT a gamer but will do quite a bit of Zoom meetings (one-on-one) and audio on top of home vids so this is my intended use. Thanks again for such a great and informative review Frank. Hey thanks for the comment! The yeti I think is a good entry level mic however for about the same price the wave 3 is amazing along with the software. I’d also recommend you look into the Samson q2u. Let us know which one you get! Cheers!
I just purchased it and so far I am loving it. I do have a mechanical key board so the clicking is still heard but not as much. I make Minecraft videos so hopefully this mic will help my sound quality on my videos. My next video that will be coming out after I wrote this comment will be with the elgoto wave 3.

Mainly it feels like the added price is the software on the elgato since it’s super sweet and user friendly esp if then you pairing it with things like obs studio. But the apps (some gaming) do not work with it

A few weeks ago I really wanted the wave 3 ‘cause I misunderstood the software and thought you could only use it with the wave 3 but then I realized you can use the software with the wave 1 which is a lot cheaper, so I’m gonna go with that one instead since the wave 3 only has a few extra controls than the wave 1
your voice is boomier/deeper on the Shure and on the Wave 3 it has more treble to a point that the 's', 't', or any syllable on the high frequency is more accentuated. Wave 3 is very surprising and majority of the reason why you'll get it is because of the mixer software.
I prefer the wave 3 its the better all rounder if you ask me. Such a good mic.
I had the MV7 with a Rode boom arm, but returned it since it did feel way more convenient using just a normal headset for Discord. Especially the Sennheiser I got since it has this microphone that You flip up to mute.

The Wave 1 and Wave 3 both have a clip guard feature (I don't think you mentioned that).... its one of the best things about the mic and the primary reason I bought a Wave 3. Also the Elgato Wavelink Software is really good as well.
Thank you for this review I was weighing my options but it's just seems you get more bang for your buck especially as a streamer/content creator with the Wave 3. Subbed brother🙌
Thanks for the sub and I’m glad my video helped! Warning with the mic, if your room isn’t treated it will pick up reverb from sound bouncing off the walls, one solution is to use nvidia broadcast and use the room echo cancellation. Works like a charm.

The Shure MV7 definitely has stronger side noise rejection. You did not cover the additional possibilities with the Mv7shure Motiv desktop software as oppose do the Elgato Wavelink App.
I think the Elgato Wave3 did better on the noise test. The Shure picked up the key clicks and thr thump thump from transferred desktop noise.

Shure gives an option on the software for a deeper voice, how can I do this on the elgato software?
I was shocked when you were about to pick VM7. It was very clear that Elgato 3 was a winner even keyboard typing.
Much worse the Shure picking up noise from your keyboard. The El Gato isn't bad, but I would be better with the dynamic since I don't have a perfect recording room.
What kind of lavalier/lapel mic did you use in the beginning?
I personally think the wave sounds more clear and natural or is it just me?

Doing it wrong I heard you need to use the Shure SM7B foam on the MV7 to get rid of the plosives. I’m currently using the Elgato Wave 3 but going today to try a MV7. Both mics are the same price for me.

@@StreamGearTalk same here. Tho interestingly it basically works the same as the elgato with noise pick up and canceling lol. Guess cuz an untreated room is what I need to fix then I’ll probably be able to tweak the minor differences

hi is the wave 3 using usb direct only in the PC? or any modification in settings vs the mv7
The wave mic connects via usb to the computer. At the time of recording this video there are no settings or processing done to the mic. But I literally just release a video on how to get the best quality form the wave mic using vst plugins via wavelink ruclips.net/video/iMqo7KfJp-s/видео.html

Dude, the wave 3 actually did a better job in the keyboard noise test.. The other one had horrible thumping noises in it.. Did you really not pick that up?
In the end I had to agree the wave 3 was the better mic.. Even with the pops it was way better.
Yea I find that I love condensers more but I need to treat my room, well this was also before nvidia put out room echo removal. As for the thumping I had a bad habit of not thoroughly checking for issues like that but we are better now. Thanks for the feedback!
One question ❓....which mic is better for the situation of video recording...like i record videos for my channel...and i wanted to place mic above my head...so the camera dont see the mic..but when i speak 🗣️ the mic above me is hiding can record the sound...so which one best....beacuse i thought shure mic can only work when you literally put your mouth into it... please consider my situation and then tell me..thanks
Probably looking for a shotgun or pencil condenser.
You'll want to avoid dynamic mics as they require you to be very close (1-3 inches) away from the addressable side.

For a short video and clarity, the Elgato seems better. What people might not be hearing, however, is all those clicks and mouth sounds. So for a longer recording, podcasts, etc., the Shure is far better-if you care about your listeners.

@@DeosPraetorian A ‘pop’ filter’ is (generally speaking) for reducing plosives (Please bring Pizza Pronto). Some mics, regardless of employing a ‘pop filter,’ are sensitive to the clicking saliva / mouth sounds.

@@StreamGearTalk thank you frank! I just bought the elgato wave 3 for streaming. And used the NVIDIA Broadcast to lessen the background noise. I tried it on stream but still hearing some of the noise. Should I adjust the input in my streamlabs?
Your gain may be too high! Basically set your gain to a point you’re satisfied with your voice volume but not picking up excessive noise. Once you find that point, in obs, add a noise gate and increase the gain for the mic via the filters. This increase a gain through obs raises the mics volume without making it actually pick up more sound. I HIGHLY recommend reaper plug ins for obs. They’re free and amazing for what they do!

Are you paid by elgato? Because the mv7 is way better it’s night and day… there is one issue with the mv7 and that’s the filter.. you can change that for $20… also if you EQ tweak the mv7 it can be better than the sm7b.

Every RUclips video I've watched about the Wave 3 has put it above every other mic in its price range.
@@VulkanRTFM the elgato mic is awful unless you’re in a sound proof room. It will pick up you breathing from a metre away.
I never relied sorry about that. Fishy, I felt , at the time that the wave 3 just sounded better for my voice. Over time though I found that my lack of a properly treated room introduced a lot of problems with my recordings. I have since upgraded to an SM7B with a goxlr mini and am not looking back. For what it is, and for its price point, given the right treatment or environment I do believe that the wave 3 is a solid choice but not the end all be all.
