I had several techs to come out and they moved the strike plate, then next time they filed the plate and after they left the problem persisted. I used the trick with the lipstick and found out the problem was with the strike plate that the lock was extending out of. I loosened the screws a little and to my amazement the problem was fixed. Thank you so much!!!

Used to use this. Now I just put a piece of tape over the strike and close the door/throw the bolt. Not too hard, just enough to indent the tape.

Thanks for the simple and useful instructions. I used your lipstick trick to find the alignment problem (and got my wife angry that I used her favorite lipstick), then it was easy to correct.

Hey Yale! I have the nest smart lock and the door is perfectly aligned. When I close the bold with my hand there is 0 resistance. But when I run the setup, it says that the door cannot close the lock. I think there might be something wrong with the motor. Is there any way to tell if the motor is bad? I tried calling support but they were not helpful at all. I followed the hard reset video and it still wont connect to the app or lock the door.

The lock is not calibrating. How do you fix that? The keypad disappears and the lock makes a grinding sound but it does not turn.

To say that If your lock doesn't work "this way", then the fix is "that way" is ridiculous. There can be more than one way to repair something, so don't let a video tell you what is right and what is not.
The "hinge fix"?? Rather than go through all the work of getting sheet metal, removing half the hinge and marking out a shim. then cutting it out and drilling it, then installing it under the bottom hinge of the door, your first step would be the most logical: Check the top hinge for looseness and tighten it's screws. The top hinge bears the most weight from the door and can become loose, causing the door & lock to become misaligned in the frame. This happens a LOT. Use your common sense and always check for the simplest solutions first before going overboard with time consuming work that you may not even have had to do in the first place.

Great pro tip Wes. Thank you for sharing it. If everything seems right with the top hinge and a shim is needed, we do mention that plastic, ready-made shims are available.

Your advice is sound but it doesn't invalidate what they said, in case the top hinge is not the problem.
