One thing I love about your channel is that you represent the entire Caribbean with your recipes. You never make it seem like your food is exclusive to Guyana...like some bloggers/youtubers make it seem like their food is exclusive to 🇯🇲 or 🇹🇹. We all eat the same delicious food. I'm definitely subscribing.
I came to your channel after hearing David Lammy MP being interviewed on Test Match Special today. He'd brought in a black cake as a gift. Growing up I thought of the West Indies as a single place but as I got older I learned more about the Caribbean and realised that the islands as well as Guyana have some similarities but many differences too.
This is the most Beautiful cake. Packed with flavor. It's moist yet dense. Serve small slices .It truly sings holiday...but delicious for any occasion. 😋😋👍👍👍
Currently reading a book called Black Cake so I decided to find out what kind of cake that is! Very interesting video. Would love to try this recipe one day
I made this today and it turned out just how my grandma used to make! I did have to make a few changes though because I couldn't get some of the ingredients. Instead of currants I used dried apricots and instead of candied cherries I used marichino Cherries. I also used blackberry wine instead of rum. It turned out delicious. Also I split the batter between 3 9 inch pans that were about an inch and a half thick. They took about an hour and 45 minutes to cook.
I make more of a lighter fruitcake, and always wondered how to get that dark rich colour and flavours. I never thought of blending the fruit, it makes total sense. Thanks for sharing, I will be trying this.
Thank you so much. I just made my black cake for the first time alone and my mom is dead so I couldn't ask her re when the cake is done and when to pour the rum after!
I've been looking for and using online recipes for years but its been a real pleasure to find your recipes for my favourite Guyana home recipes! Your reassuring helpful Guyanese voice and accent are comforting and inspiring. Thank you Jehan! Can't wait to get started!👍🏾🇬🇾
Jehan CAN cook! Jehan CAN bake too! Period!! I love to support our Guyanaese sisters and brothers who are keeping our Guyanaese traditions alive. Her recipes are clear and concise and her kitchen is always clean and orderly. Plus I’ve tried many of her recipes and they’re a awesome.
Thank you for your excellent recipe. I have made this cake several times since i found this recipe and everyone is asking for it. Thanks again for sharing and please pay no attention to the negative comments. They don't what they are talking about. Thanks and continue being excellent
Lovely presentation, thanks so much! Is it possible to post the exact measurements on all the ingredients, especially the fruit and dry item proportions. If those are not exactly right, it’ll be pretty hard to turn out as fine a cake as displayed. Many thanks 🙏 again!
yup! I just made some last night and it went over the sides of both pans I had. Luckily, I put a tray on the rack below and made some free samples for the family to try out while the rest of it baked longer. hahaha
everyone bakes differently ok I grew up making black cake without even a mixer man my arms hurt back in those days so stop with all the negative comments she was at least giving u all and idea of what black cake looks like and how its prepare it so it's up to u to make the recipe your own some people even like to add nuts to it some people like there cake with a variety of different drums I even bake my cake with both rum and guiness it's just the way I was taught to make it in Guyana every carribean doesnt make black cake the same we are all connected by culture but we all have have our own identities and so what if she made a mistake with the measurements if u know there was an error make correct it in your own receipe
Thanks Jehan! Your cake looks wonderful. I'm a fruit cake addict and will definitely be trying your recipe, especially as it's the first time I've heard of anyone 'whizzing' the dried fruits. Good idea! Thanks again, and Happy 2017 to you!
Expresso98 you're welcome and Happy New Year to you also. It is best if you soak the fruits overnight but if you have a high powered food processor or blender you can certainly do it dry.
@ Jehan I want to make this cake for mother's day. I have fruit that been soaking for a while can you please tell me how many cups of fruits I have to add to get this beautiful black cake thank you. Looking forward for your reply. Thanks again
I grew up in North Dakota and married a man from Guyana. I made your black cake this year. He says it's just like his mom used to make! Thanks!
My wife is Guyanese and I always liked this cake. So I am making it for everyone this year. Including my father in law. Wish me luck lol

Love the normal rich Christmas cake we make/get in the UK. But will definitely make this black cake for this Christmas as it looks stunning
No where near the same. Our British cake has fruit bits not blended. O look forward to trying this since I loathe fruit bits.

Jehan do u have recipe for sorrel cake ?
Love it! Quick question, what kind of fruit juice do you recommend to use instead of rum/wine?
I would recommend apple juice.
Hi love the recipe...request if you could advice...what would be the substitute instead of Alcohol basically I am looking out for Alcohol free cake
Some people use grape juice as a substitute
I wonder if you can use molasses instead of burnt sugar coloring ...
I wouldn't recommend it.
