    I haven't see avocados that big and beautiful for decades since I moved to the states. I used to have my own tree in my backyard, same as banana and plantain plants. Too cold here, all I can grow are small trees that I can take indoors during winter.

  • @blukatzen

    Back in the 80's, I was studying nutrition at Miami-Dade college and I roomed/boarded with a family. The mom of the house had a lot of friends with gardens, and one friend in particular had a large Hass Avocado tree in the backyard. In June/July when they are ready, they are like apples and fall to the ground. When people have trees like this, sometimes they take shopping bags to work with all the fruit so they don't get rats coming to eat the fruit. This approach helps people in situations like that. I live in Chicago, and we have to pay a lot of money for avocados. (sometimes almost a dollar apiece!) Sometimes when I see the prices I think back to seeing that tree with all the avocados on the ground and wish we could have that situation here. Alas, though I have apple trees, so I'll trade ya! lol!

  • @ivorykeys1566
    @ivorykeys1566 6 лет назад +4

    Martha, I haven't tried this yet but plan to. I believe if you place a sheet of parchment paper in the pan first, before placing your already citrus spritzed avocado down, that it may not stick to the paper and will be removed easily. I'm going to give it a try.
    Thanks for the freezing tip though.
    I didn't know you could freeze it. However I do know it will last a few days in an AIRTIGHT container which has had fruit pectin dissolved in the water first before placing the avocado half with pit, face down. Keeps beautifully.
    A 2nd tip is to place it in an AIRTIGHT container with only a half peeled onion. As we know onion absorbs any bacteria This too works for a day or 2.

    I'll have to try this. I also BRINE avocado slices. Put them in salt water for perhaps 30 hours at room temperature to ferment, and then put them in the fridge. You may get a little grayness on the surface, but even so you can scrape that off. I just ate avocado on my salad that was 2 weeks old, very slightly fermented, and it was very good. Avocado pickles, is what some called this method.

      Rainbow Panda says I’m always giving to family, friends, teachers from my son’s school and neighbors so perhaps that’s why my tree produces so much because I’m generous. This year already gave over 1000 avocados away plus the ones we eat at home and we still have some in the tree. My uncle came a month ago to climb the tree and cut the ones from the very top and just those were 450. He took those to give to his friends and neighbors.

Guacamole does not look appetizing at all when it turns brown 😜😝. Some have commented that freezing avocados changes the taste. I will still try it and will post my findings. The avocados sold here (west texas) are Hass avocados from Mexico and boy, they are pricey but I imagine if they were from California, they would be even more expensive.

    Thank you for a great idea, I had no idea you could do this. How is the texture once they are thawed? I love avocado in my salads and wonder if the texture is the same as fresh.

    • @rainbowpandasays8851
      @rainbowpandasays8851 6 лет назад +8

      Terri-TN of course its not the same more mushy and it browns a little in the thawing

    • @Lynnromesa
      @Lynnromesa 5 лет назад +1

      It don't turn brown bcoz the lemon you squeeze on avocado prevents it from turning brown

      Roberto M. Truth is Haas goes bad trying to thaw it. I’ve been doing this for years. So I leave it frozen and just make smoothie with it.

    If you line the freezer tray (whatever material it is) with parchment paper or cling film, you need not worry about the acid leaching and won't struggle to remove the frozen cubes!

  • @JayKumar-Official
    @JayKumar-Official 4 года назад

    Nice! TL;DW version: Peel them, dice them, add lemon (or lime) juice, gently toss and turn to make sure each cube is coated in juice, place in freezable ziploc bag, freeze :D

    You can use the pit in your smoothies. 6 grams of soluble fiber. Excellent for reducing cholesterol naturally.

      GoMamaOrganics.com Hi there. It would be best to mash them rather than blend them. Otherwise you're breaking down the fiber and lose the benefits.

    Wow. The avocados you have are much firmer than the ones at my grocer's. I get smashed avocado all over my fingers when I try to peel them. I guess by the time they get to my town, they're much older than yours. They won't grow anywhere near here without a heated greenhouse.
