    I have the same bike and have swapped out a few parts as well including the grips, pedals, and chain. The cranks are definitely on my list! 😆 Fun bike to have, nostalgic, cool and definitely a head turner. It’s an over all cool bike to have! Have fun and thank you for the video @assortedBMX! 🤘🏽

    Hey! I stumbled onto you videos and really liked seeing you young guys getting into old school BMX bikes! I'm 53. I looked at the bike you got a while back. It looks like the 80's. Looking at the welds and metal finish used in the Stranger Things mongoose it's a little different then the old ones. But the price is a good starting point. You are doing what we did. Break it and upgrade. Eventually you will have a bike that is bullet prof and its one of a kind. Thats whats cool. Eveyones bike was different. It said something about you. Glad to see you learning to work with your hands. Something lost nowadays. If I may suggest one thing that will help you nomatter what direction life may take you. Learn to weld too. Keep up with the tricks!

      I just want to say thank you for your kind words. It’s really appreciated. Welding is on my chopping list to learn. I’m getting as many trades as I can under my belt.

    On DansComp they have sealed bb’s for about $30 that will allow for 3 piece cranks, just did it to my bike after screwing around with the unsealed getting loose all the time. Would totally recommend when you get the cash. I got the Fiction Savage, can't complain

    • @assortedproductions6083
      @assortedproductions6083  4 года назад +1

      That’s going to be the next step for the bike. Shortly after I filmed that video I blew up the bottom bracket. I had more bearings and replaced it. The cranks I replaced on it are now bent as well. 3 piece is the way to go.

    Odyssey makes a 13 tooth freewheel that will fit on your skyway mags then throw a 36 tooth front sprocket and you'll take some more weight off the bike. I've taken odyssey triple traps to the shins, seeing them gave me ptsd flashbacks, get a set of shin guards

    • @assortedproductions6083
      @assortedproductions6083  5 лет назад +2

      Haha. Yeah the triple traps are pretty sharp. Notice how I’m wearing a pair of Chuck Taylors and I’m not slipping. I’m going to keep it with a 44-16 ratio. For what the bike is; it’s pretty light.

      Original Sprocket on these was 39t. Most people swapped them out for 44t.
      Knight Make the best 44t sprocket - but they are getting difficult to find now and they only do limited production runs each year so you have to get in quick.
      Best freewheel is a 16t White Industries. Once you have owned one you will never go back to anything else. I put them in all my Old School bikes.
      Modern Production 3 piece Redline Flight Crank kit with sealed BB is very affordable now.
      Back in the day Profile box cranks and Shimano DX were the best choice for an upgrade to a 3 piece setup. Redline Flight were too expensive in 1980-82 and Takagi and Tourney cranks while affordable were simply too weak / prone to bending

    • @assortedproductions6083
      @assortedproductions6083  4 года назад

      My father had a Bullseyes sealed bottom bracket paired with Suntour VX cranks. The Bullseye bracket was super expensive then! He made kids jaws drop with that. Somewhere around 80-82.

    So with this being the stranger things collectors bike, I wonder if the California special is the exact same bike, or if it has better parts..? Sometimes collector items are cheaped out on I feel, but afterall it is pacific bikes..

  • @BradThePitts
    @BradThePitts 3 года назад

    The Mongoose forks seem to be unique - the angle for the rake is up near the top and the wheel goes straight into the bottom. Most forks are straight down with forward-facing tabs at the bottom to create the rake. Is there a mechanical advantage to either?

  • @awm891
    @awm891 4 года назад +2

    Hey man sorry about the cranks....that sucks. Real old school mongoose cranks wouldve held up. I have my same pair from my 1984 expert and they still take a beating and never bend.

    Nice upgrades. ? Is. Should I buy this bike or should I get an se pk ripper??loved this frame. Had it when I was 11yo now I’m 44

    • @assortedproductions6083
      @assortedproductions6083  4 года назад

      I’m not sure if they still make the retro 20” PK Ripper. If you’re looking for a 20”? SE Racing went to making cruisers for wheelie riders... The 20” Retro PK Rippers were pretty good quality from what I remember. I think they made them from 2007-2016. They weren’t true “old school” in the aspect they had a 1-1/8 fork, and 1” seat post. If you’re going to buy the Goose you’ll need to put some upgrades into for any serious riding. If your able to find a Retro PK it’s going to run you some serious dough. The PK I think is full chromoly as where the Goose is high-tensile steel. That’s something to consider.

    Hey man sick build, would you happen to know what size pedals you used? I'm looking into changing mine as well.

    • @assortedproductions6083
      @assortedproductions6083  5 лет назад +1

      1/2 inch pedals for one piece cranks. 9/16th inch pedals for three piece. Those measurements are referring to the the thread size that goes into the crank arm. If thats what your asking for? If you’re talking about the width of the platform you stand on: You can buy oversized pedals, say for a bigger foot. Generally speaking, most pedals have the same size platform of space for your feet.

    i had a supergoose.. ahhh, when mongoose was MONGOOSE. this is clearly a replica bike using cheap, thin metal. it's more for show than go.. i think it's cool that mongoose created this, but upgrades must be made if you actually want to ride it (as an adult). everything on it is generic. the hardware has pretty much no tensile strength; it's all chinese

    • @assortedproductions6083
      @assortedproductions6083  2 года назад +1

      You’re exactly right, the whole frame is made out of high tensile steel, and it’s painted to make it look like it’s nickel finished. All the stock parts made it weigh a billion pounds. After the upgrades it wasn’t horrible but it worried me every time it jumped fearing that the frame might snap.
