The “dead child” comment has been directed at me many times along with “when your “son” turns 18, “he” will disappear from your life if you don’t affirm”. Well, I don’t affirm and my daughter will turn 18 in November. In October, we are going to get matching tattoos to mark her 2 years with no suicide attempts. (She had 5 in 2 years starting at the age of 13.) And when she comes home from school or work or even an outing she seeks me out to tell me about it. I’m still scared to death that she will “fall” when she turns 18, but for right now I cannot stop being her link to reality no matter who beats on me.

The difference between a 55 yr old autogynphile and a teenage autoandrophillic girl is 40 years, that 55 year old was once a child with mental health issues just like the teenage girl, autism and ADHD eccentricity doesn't disappear with age. One just gets seen as perverted and the girl gets away with it. But at the roots it's all the same condition. There is some slight variation but overall those on the spectrum have serious social defects and want to transition to try and escape that. Some are fetishistic, but the age thing doesn't matter, the internet indoctrination gets too all vanurable people.

I think it’s sad that some adults are so invested on being part of a new wave collective, they forget what it’s like to be a child, experimenting, learning, growing, developing and (yes, sometimes suffering) through change. All these things are natural and healthy. Imo it’s a type of predatory behaviour to swoop in on a child’s passing curiosity and drive them down a path of transition with a secret delight that by doing so, they’ve somehow joined and “woke” community.

To understand how utterly bizarre this is, Eliza Mondegreen has posted (on her Substack) a forum conversation among parents of ‘trans kids’ whereby one mum is upset and confused because her daughter is furious at her for letting her get a double mastectomy and go on wrong sex hormones at the age of 14, now that she regrets it.
And What does the mum think? Oh, maybe her daughter has gone down some dark detransitioner rabbit hole.

It appears to those who have not embraced gender ideology, that the TP (which started out as a sincere suicide prevention effort) has been captured by trans activists, and that it now asserts the following principles as unquestionable.
      1. Any attempt by concerned parents or therapists to influence a 'gender confused' person to think twice before cross-sex hormones or surgery is equivalent to the violent aversion therapies applied to homosexuals in the sixties.

There are far more influences on a child growing up than the parents. School peer groups, and definitely school bullying. I was a junior school teacher. It could be especially bad among the girls. Excluding one from a group or changing friends could devastate a girl. Social media plays a great part. I stopped FB because it made depressed and I’m 77. Life is isolated nowadays unless you partake of social media. I’ve chosen isolation. But too difficult for a young person to choose to come out of social media. Parents’ influence is reduced and the very people who love the person are cast aside. My 50yr old nephew/niece now lives as a woman and favours his LGBT friends to my 80+ yr old brother and sister in law. Even at that age the influence to break from family seems to be an inherent part of it.

He was talking about a sliding doors moment when he was 14 and had the option of a recostructive surgery to make him look more "normal" that obviously had some risks attached, and he said his parents did the worst thing they've ever done to him by giving HIM the choice of whether to have it done. He chose not to take the option and apparently that was the moment he started to own his face and accept it. The first thing I thought of was the medicalisation of gender dysphoria in children.

My one regret is that due to growing up in a society dominated by the ideological transphobia of scum like Bindel & Hakeem I feel I wasted most of my life desperately trying to be someone I'm not. People's lives are their own. Whether cis or trans people should be free to live their own lives without having other people's ideology rammed down their throat. Which is what the anti-trans movement does by trying to force trans kids to be cis directly against their will. That ruins lives.

I’m autistic and had a firm identity as a “not a girl” tomboy from very very young. Even my teddy is a boy in a dress who I got very cross if anyone misgendered him - from about age 2 (I was born in 1970)
So while I agree that the social contagion has escalated this in autistic kids- I think people should also be aware that not only the social nonconformity - many of us autistic people just barely identify as human let alone a gender role.
But also- there could be prenatal hormonal effects ( my mum was given weekly hormones to prevent miscarriage with me )
Fortunately I also had some former “spiritual “ type beliefs - so I just decided I feeeeel like I have a boy brain BUT I have the body I have. Hardly anyone has a body they exactly want. So I just set out to accept my body as it is- having kids helped me appreciate the usefulness of my body. And I know for sure if I was born in the 90s I’d be one of those teens on hormones and surgery.
And I honestly doubt I’d have survived the drama of that- also- I would be happy with a beard and some extra body hair- but I would HATE if I ended up bald with a big hairy back as one of my trans friends has.
Also- with autism there is already anxiety and depression often- and processing feelings etc. so if I’d had all that extra stuff to deal with - plus meds or medical appointments etc
I was aware my kids being on the spectrum they could have had similar feelings- so I made sure as they grew up they knew they could mess around with doing what they liked- and it didn’t make them a girl if they played dress ups- or had feelings.
I didn’t assign “feminine “ or masculine to behaviours and told them however they were is perfectly fine for them.
I have noticed many of the kids who go down this gender suddenly on the radar are kids who haven’t necessarily had a lot of concepts in discussions from a young age.
My kids even knew a couple of people who transitioned- but they knew it wasn’t simply because they felt like the opposite sex- it was because their situation was severe- they’d had a lot of counselling and tried to be ok- and the hormones and surgery was needed on their extreme cases - and it worked for them!
But they knew it was serious and not simply about gender roles or clothing etc

Thank you, this is so well said, especially "many of us autistic people just barely identify as human let alone a gender role".
      Exactly!
If I'd been born in the 21st century instead of the 20th, I would've been misdiagnosed as a trans boy. From earliest childhood I was a tomboy, and I never liked "boring girl stuff" like dolls. But like you, I eventually grew into appreciating the benefits of having a woman's body. And when I discovered a silk skirt at a used clothing store, I was amazed at how comfortable some female clothing can be.
I'm not surprised there's been a massive increase in girls being misdiagnosed as trans, compared to boys. . . autism is frequently underdiagnosed in girls, and we're socially noncomformist.
I have a couple friends who transitioned as adults and that was the best option for them, but WAY too many autistic girls are being misdiagnosed as trans boys and put on puberty blockers and testosterone which they'll end up regretting.😕

People with autism are human. We (I've lived with my autistic hb 52 years, worked in science (many autists there), in retrospect many of my family atypical. When you're poor the last thing a girl gets is "tizz" (jewellery, make up, pretty dresses) so you learn to do without. These people scream acceptance, rather than accepting themselves and others for who they are. And that the tizz, gloss and glamour is just as fringe as autism is, ah, but the profits in tizz, birthday cakes, and social functions is enormous. Think of the profits made from days not celebrated or done 50 years ago like they are today - birthdays, Valentines, Halloween, Gay Parades, green hair dye, make up, surgeries, hormones. The list is endless ... money, money, money makes the world go round, the cinking clanking sound of money, money, money (Cabaret film musical 1972). Only now it's the silent credit card.

Having therapy to explore your feelings to confirm if you need to transition to be comfortable in life should be rightly categorised as gender affirming care instead of whatever mess is going on now.
How do you know if you should make life changing decisions without exploring the why thoroughly?
You have to have the same therapeutic conversations before recieving medication for depression, bipolar, ect. (in ethical places at least) so why shouldn't the same be applied to dysphoria?

I’m autistic and my first counsellor tried to convince me I was gender fluid. Because of my black and white thinking I nearly fell for it and I was very confused for years. I was 28 when I had that experience. I never fit in with girls, growing up I was much more interested in my dad’s train set than Barbie’s. I also didn’t want to be female because being female meant I am sexually vulnerable. Until I had space to process the trauma I never felt connected to my body at all and it took me a decade to get that connection, understand my emotions and physical sensations.

Very old school, emotionally distant parents. He was confused about his sexuality and this morphed into an obsessive belief that he could become the daughter they never had but had made clear they had wanted. It’s tragic. This is just a trend and aesthetics and has nothing to do with medical condition in most cases. Teens are just being teens and doing teen things... In my life there has been Teddy Boys, Beatniks, Mods, Rockers, Hippies, Skinheads, Greasers, Punks, New Romantics, and yes Goths. All fads and fashion that most grow out of in adulthood. Now we have Trans the only fad in town for nearly a couple of decades. I am a fan of his music and he was a real phenomenon but I do wonder if Bowie has something to answer for. Youth appears to have run out of imagination and ideas . There is such a thing described as intersex caused by genetic defect which is very rare and is something quite separate and distinct from those pretending to be something they are not to compensate for various shortcomings in their personality.

Bowie played with being androgynous. He never represented his non-theatrical self as other than a man. Same with Boy George. Bowie's career began in the mid 60s and was all but over before this trend began.

Rather she lamented: “These trannies are filling the vacuum left behind by the death of anything cool. I wish we had more mods, goths , bikers and even hippies. At least they have a belief system. Broadly speaking, I think there's an intensity to one's attachment to a youth subculture that is absolutely a phase. I too was a goth in my teens (a few years before you - mid to late 80s) and spent a fair amount of time each day making absolutely sure that other people could not mistake me for anything other than a goth, and that I wouldn't be mistaken for someone 'normal'. These days? Bah, I can't be bothered with all that make up and hair dye and hair spray and precise adherence to strict clothing rules and wallowing in alienation. I've matured. I have many other interests these days that are nothing to do with goth subculture, and less time in which to do them. However, I still sometimes revisit some aspects of gothic culture that, in my teens, was my entire cultural landscape - weird, melancholic literature, occult symbolism, Fields of the Nephilim etc etc. It's the intensity of my attachment to those things that has changed. Of course, it doesn't happen that way for everyone, and that's fine. But, for most, I think that's generally the pattern.

I actually think that the supposedly ex-goth psychiatrist makes quite a few good points, and I agree with much of what he is (trying) to say. However, he doesn't get his point across particularly well. Moreover, as someone who comes from the same direction as him, I take offence at a subculture moored in music but informed by art, literature and history being compared with a deep-rooted psychological set of issues that leads - in the most extreme cases - to mutilation and ruined lives in the name of medicine. There's quite a big difference there, to put it mildly. I understand that he is basically trying to argue that these young people are _not_ "transgender" and are merely searching for identity etc. Nevertheless, the comparison is a poor one. As an aside, I concur completely with the points made about the decline of the importance music-based "youth culture" as we have known it from the 1950s until, perhaps, the late 1990s or early 2000s. In many ways, I actually find that a more interesting topic than this one. As a further incidental comment, "goth" (for want of a better term) was never "cool". On the contrary, it was hated and derided by the music press, the arbiters of what was seen as "cool", who also saw the image (and imagery) as ridiculous. Anyway, it'll be interesting to see what becomes of "The Spectator" under its new ownership and editorship.

"The new goth" ..... Hey, don't compare goth to trans. Goth is goth and trans is trans. You make it sound like trans is a goth movement, but it's not. People that turn goth turn goth for very different reasons than people are trans.
I understand you're probably comparing goth to trans in the sense that they are both "things rebellious people do", but please be careful with the way you use words.
The goth movement has been blamed enough for crap that isn't their fault. It's practically tantamount to racism. It's like saying because a black person committed a crime that all black people are criminals. Blaming "goths" is the same exact thing. Goths are people and are just as diverse as any other crowd. All you had to say is "Trans is a rebellious subculture" to get your point across. Don't rope in goths.
I'm not saying I am against trans, but I don't think it's fair to keep making goths into targets.
Also, I don't think goth is a phase. There are many people that are still goth until they are 60+. Is it a phase for some? Sure. "Anything is possible".
That's like saying being a Christian is a phase. It sounds stupid. Obviously, some people stay Christians, and some people don't.

@LS-xs7sg What utterly misogynistic BS. It's mainly women who are the victims of this. Women whose spaces are being invaded by men with fetishes. Young women who are being told to cut off their breasts and destroy their fertility so someone else can profit.
You think that's the result of female teachers and empathy??? No. It's the result of entitled men hating women having spaces men can't enter. Men who get a sexual kick out of invading those spaces. Men who can't stand women having the right to refuse them.
Need I continue? This has NOTHING to do empathy. It's the absolute opposite of it.

I agree. To me, gender is what you apply to nouns in grammar. Conjures up past French and German lessons to me. A person has a sex. Biologically only two with very rare congenital difficulties but still a mixture of the two sexes. Anyone choosing to live as the opposite to their birth has to take cross hormones all their lives. Top surgery can help their image. Bottom surgery is hard to go through and not always desired. Puberty blockers can sterilise. Biological sex can’t be changed. Youngsters are being conned into voluntary sterilisation.

Self mutilation (even via a predatory surgeon), and destroying healthy body-parts, for no evidence-based reason, because of weird, 100% evidence-free, pseudo-religious beliefs about "born in the wrong body" isn't about "freedom".
It's about a harmful, authoritrian cult, who demand control over the speech of others, who censor, deplatform, bully and threaten (particularly targetting women), who mutilate (whether chemically OR surgically) perfectly healthy minors, who destroy the rights of women and girls, in eternal pursuit of the all-important "validation" of a complete fiction, which they demand that EVERYONE must pretend is "truth".

Trans rights are human rights. Goths are their own thing, being transgender is a gender identity, trans women (in our case diagnosed and under many years of carer before HRT or surugry) goths? That's a music and fashion subculture, I know a few trans people who've hid in the goth community as it gave them the freedom to come out as the goth community is friendly and you do get more tolerance of breaking sociletal norms so it does mean trans people can feel safe around goths. But our trans struggle is our own and personal in relation to sexuality and gender, and does not in no way conflate Goths with trans people one is a music based subculture the other is a protected sexual and gender characteristic under EHRC.

Either there's a nearly-world-wide conspiracy amongst medical organizations, or transitioning (in a variety of ways, in a variety of degrees, and with adequate caution) really is the most successful way to treat most patients reporting gender dysphoria according to the experts, according to the studies, when scrutinized without biases. The gender criticals tend to be able to point at exactly one thing: anecdotes. It's the same story since forever ago in different guises. The amount of dysinformation around gender-critical circles (about psychotherapy changing over 80% of gender dysphorics' minds for instance) makes it impossible for parents to see the big picture even if their specific children seem to be fine without any medical treatments in the end. I could tell you about all the people I know... but then that would just be more anecdotes, wouldn't it :P

    • @niji.sateenkaari8835
      @niji.sateenkaari8835 Месяц назад +1

the question is not whether transitioning is the best "treatment" for gender dysphoria (it really seems to be), the question is whether all those people claiming to be dysphoric are really dysphoric. If some girl wants to transition to a boy because she feels uncomfortable when older men look at her developing breasts, the real issue is not the girl's negative feelings towards her body, it's the men staring at her. A friend of mine (really tomboish, slim young woman) never uttered feelings of true gender dysphoria (also regarding her body) but just said "I don't like wearing dresses, it makes me feel weak" and apparently took that (and some other rejectional feelings towards stereotypically feminine behaviour) as a reason to go be a boy. I'd argue she just has a backwards view of femininity she does not want to adhere to.

@@niji.sateenkaari8835 Yeah, and so the necessity of medical evaluation will remain, of course, just as long as we understand that the figures show minimal regret as it is, and that the main problem we're facing is the limitation of, not too easy access to, trans-affirmative care.
(I, again, will avoid any and all anecdotes cause we can do better than that.)
