While I love Stephen Mitchell’s “Giglamesh” and “Iliad”, I just didn’t feel the same with his “Odyssey”. I’ll be extremely interested in which translations you recommend. And thank you again for turning me on to those Stephen Fry mythology books!!! They’re incredible! I’m also currently reading a book from one of my favorite historians, Philip Matyszak called “Hercules: The World’s First Superhero”. Sincerely, Gideon Alexander.
I too am wondering which translation(s) you would recommend. (My Greek is rusty. 😊) Back in the day, Fitzgerald was big, but I picked it up recently and didn't care for it. ~~~ As for pronunciations, I suggest using the traditional Oxbridge versions (e.g., PRY-am). Sure, they may not sound exactly Greek, but then we don't say ThuKIDides, do we? I believe an old dictionary, vintage 1975 or before, should be a good source. ~ Great screen presence.
which translation would you recommend for a first time reader? i read the fagles translation of the iliad (and enjoyed it a lot) and was recommended the emily wilson translation of the odyssey but since you suggested that people maybe shouldn’t read that one first i’m really interested in knowing which one would be best for me!
If the last part of the war did not survive antiquity how do you know about it now? was that Hans Christian Andersen or the Brothers Grimm? It must have been written down somewhere for people to take it seriously.
The Aeneid referencing how it ended mostly (a Roman mythology story)! as well as a few second hand sources saying a few things we did find written down. But the actual books that those things came from did not survive
It would have been amazing to read The Odyssey without knowing a single thing from the story. ANY Greek myth really. “Oh Hercules, they made a Disney movie about him, I wonder what his deal is- HE KILLED HIS FAMILY?!”
I was admitted for anorexia but I’m uploading a little classics journey video next week which will go into this a little more since I’ve gotten this question A LOT recently!

@@MoAnInc Why, thank you❤️
You make me wish I could redo my Classical Civ major!

A fabulous major to have under your belt 🤓(but then again, I am TOTALLY biased 😍)

Excited for this series! What translations would you recommend for casual readers?
Thank you! It depends if you prefer to read prose or poetry?
Probably prose. When I read The Iliad it was a poetry translation by Alexander Pope and that was brutal 😅

Was anything written about the Amazons?
Thank u sm for carrying me through my literature final 💀💀💀
Hahaha happy to be of service 😂
