Lyrics:
It was a cold and wet December day
When we touched the ground at J.F.K.
The snow was melting on the ground
On B.L.S. I heard the sound
(Of an angel).
New York like a Christmas tree
Tonight, this city belongs to me,
(Angel).
Soul love
Well this love won't let me go.
So long
Angel of Harlem.
Birdland on Fifty-Three
The street sounds like a symphony
We got John Coltrane and a love supreme
Miles and she's got to be an angel.
Lady Day got diamond eyes
She sees the truth behind the lies
(Angel).
Soul love
Well this love won't let me go.
So long
Angel of Harlem.
Blue light on the avenue
God knows they got to you
Empty glass, the lady sings
Eyes swollen like a bee-sting.
Blinded, you lost your way
In the side streets and the alleyways
Like a star exploding in the night
Filling up the city with broad daylight.
Angel in devil's shoes
Salvation in the blues
You never looked like an angel
Angel of Harlem.
The “Angel of Harlem” is Billie Holiday, a jazz singer who moved to Harlem as a teenager in 1928. She became famous for her spectacular voice and her ability to move the audience to tears. She had to deal with racism, drug and alcohol problems, and unhealthy relationships for most of her life. Thus, her deep sadness was often revealed in her singing.
Billie Holiday was nicknamed “Lady Day”. Hence the line, “Lady Day got diamond eyes, she sees the truth behind the lies.”
“Angel of Harlem” (1988) is a tribute to the blues, jazz and gospel music U2 heard while touring America.
The phrase “On BLS I heard the sound… “ refers to New York radio station WBLS, where U2 heard the black music that influenced this track.
U2 recorded this in 1987 in Memphis, under the helm of producer “Cowboy” Jack Clement.
In the studio, Bono learned an important lesson : alcohol and horn players do not mix. He recalled : “I thought I would lighten the session up, so I sent out for a case of Absolut Vodka. I was giving it to the horn players and we were all having a little laugh and Cowboy came up to me […]. He said, ‘Bono, how long you been doing this? ‘ I said, ‘Ten years, nearly.’ He said, ‘Ten years and you don’t know not to give the horn section Absolut Vodka? You can give it to anybody else but you can’t give a horn section Absolut.’ I asked, ‘Why, particularly, the horn section?’ Cowboy said, ‘LISTEN, STUPID, you try playing a horn when your lips won’t work.’” 💚🎵💜
I sing and I have her birthday.

It's kinda strange how a song can always take you back to a certain random specific time. Like a winter weekend night in 1988. I worked at a restaurant with my buddy Scott in high school, washing dashes. We were always super busy on weekends, the local radio station wwct 105.7 Rock 106 would play the hell out of this song to were it got annoying. While extra busy trying to stay caught up. Scott starts frustratingly singing along to this song playing on the cooks radio. Making me crack up and reply with something like "I feel your pain brother." I completely forgot about that uneventful random moment. But this song always makes it pop back into my head.
Scott passed away in 2011 at 40 from a sudden heart attack or brain aneurysm. Now everytime I hear this song & think about that moment at work one busy winter night. It leads me to think about all the fun times I had with him....RIP Scott B.
@Michael brinks 8089 sorry to hear about your loss you have my deepest condolences it sounded as though you were great friends 🙏🙏
🫂 thank u so much for this story… I can imagine while reading 💫
Love or Hate U2 you’ve got to applaud their dedication to music and to their fans. The lads have delivered some incredible albums over the last 45 years but playing live is where the magic happens! If you’ve attended a U2 concert then you’ll know it’s more like a tribe celebration and every voice there is ready to sing! 🏴💙🇮🇪
Yeah U2 is an amazing band. Very long career with incredible album and unreleased track. Oh look at Bono, what a hot and tasty man. I am in love 😍
@A.R @Nguyen Julie Angel of Harlem’s a legendary song!
They're prolific. Even if they'd stopped making music 20 years ago they'd still be one of the best bands in the world, but they didn't!
@@GonzoTehGreat 2 Right dude, they r the dogs doodahs just hat3ers hating. U2 is a band of 4 talented & dedicated man's that really love music!! and they have & put their passion in his songs .
U2 is a ultra successful & very know Band exactly for theses qualities.
The secret of U2's success is very simple and actually is not a secret at all, the adjectives passion, sincerity, & dedication are deep ingredients in their more than 4 decades of career, of course they have too another fundamental & essential key to explain his success as a band the talent.
I think that if every person in the world, forget for just one second the hate or prejudice against U2 as a band & Bono's personal politics interests & opinions, and have the patience to dedicated himself to listen U2 discography + many & many others U2 songs that aren't in their studio albums + watch a great amount of live concerts recorded in DVD's, or even presently one live concert of U2.
I frankly think that if every person & haters in the world did all these things that i cited above, is practically impossible that they not appreciate and recognize humbled an single of many qualities of this band, Bono's lyrics, vocals & stage presence, U2 songs, compositions, melodies, live performances, albums, courageous > expressible & well succeed reinventions, The Edge geniuses & talent that is so real, big & evident, to the point of him being one of very few guitarrists in the world of music to have conquered an hard achievement that is create an unique and differentiate own sound, & to finish Larry & Adam creatives, rich & fundamental rhythm sections that is perfectly matched.
At last we have piece by piece all U2 gems again remastered hd , hello to fans all over the world from Athens Greece
I need, I really need "STAY", my fav song ever, in HD and in the official channel.......
@@robinsoncaceres221 Angel Of Harlem’s one of my favorite songs of all time! 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Bono’s voice is one of a kind.
Yes he does and it’s just wonderful to hear
This is what playing like a band with a soul sounds like
🎯 Remember the media's astroturfed backlash against them for having a song on an ipod? 🙄 U2 didn't deserve that manufactured backlash...Bono got the IMF debt forgiven for 3rd world countries for chrissakes.
The economist Michael Hudson calls the US the loan shark of the world using IMF/World Bank to strip nations of their assets. Long live Bono's debt cancellation jubilee!
The real jubilee is debt jubilee & land re-distribution.
The original Summarian bible said: debt forgiveness and land re-distribution ie debt jubilee, Leviticus 25, prior to the Greek translation. Western civilization is the first civilization to eschew this (Michael Hudson).

This is their best album.
@wandererkenshin7557 It's an iconic classic. When a band releases ONE iconic album well then people know what's what . But these guys released two. The other of course being Joshua Tree.
This is a fantastic U2 tribute to all those legendary jazz, blues and soul black musicians.
Oh, that opening...the horns...*chef kiss*
Most people don't realize that...specifically Billie Holiday
It sounds like black soul to you? Maybe the horns?
Yes 🎉
"Birdland on 53, the streets sounds like a symphony, we got John Coltrane and A Love Supreme, Miles and she's got to be an angel..." My FAVORITE verse!!!!

People forget.....they were actually brilliant
Real music
Those who feel the beauty of this don't forget quality music.
Yes...I listened to them until the album How to dismantle the atomic bomb...then they started playing tralala.
U2 are criminally underrated.
I mean, in this day and age yeah, but 22 Grammys and somewhere over 150 million albums sold. They made nearly three-quarters of a billion on tour at age 50...along with Depeche Mode still my go-to 35 years later
They're getting a Kennedy Center award. Hardly underrated.
Thank God this one didn't get too much air play like some of their others. It's still unspoiled for me.
Exactly 👍.
Right on.
Indeed
That's kinda what I was thinking. 👏
❤ ever ❤
A beautiful song dedicated to the immortal Lady Day Billie Holiday
Yes sir.. beautiful isn't it?
God Bless Billie Holiday ...One of the Best ...Beautiful Tribute !
I think she was the influence behind Natalie Cole (apart from her father, the immortal Nat King)
yes but it's about all blues artists
I honestly never knew, appreciate the fact
U2 definetly not a soul band but this is classic soul, and the emotions were pouring out. One of their best tunes
Not a soul band but Bono was acting that Al Green vocal with the voice cracking
As a 17 year old girl, this is my first honest reaction listening to this song...😯..his voice🔥🤘 and the video 🤯😳😍 thinking to myself..HAVE I BEEN LIVING UNDER A ROCK THIS WHOLE TIME??😫 My new obsession.💘😁
I'm glad you found this! I bet you'll have a lot of fun discovering more of their incredible music! (as in all of it!) I am a long time fan, can you tell? :)

One of the best songs of U2
I’m 62 years old and always been a southern rock girl but heard this song for the first time the other night and was blown away by this song and said dayumm I’ve been missing this for how many years???
Bono was really beautiful in this video 😍
You can say hot Bono. I am in love 😍
underrated song.. this song is a masterpiece!!! Love it!!
Absolutely
It sure is a masterpiece.
An awesome song from an awesome band; U2!
My literal thought upon hearing it again today.
Mari…all Joshua Tree is a masterpiece…they set the stage for many bands in the “grunge” genre…not a fan of that genre but U2 is one of my favorite bands, and as I am older, it maintained a grown up feel compared to what we listened to during the 80s.
Still gives me chills after all these years.... " Lady Day got diamond eyes" 💎
Blimey, this song is thirty three years old. Still sounds as good as day it was released.

the horn kick after the lyric "so long" is really delicious.

Surely that's the Memphis Horns ! Wayne Jackson and Andrew Love
Are they called brass stabs?
Thanks U for recognizing black artists.Big up Harlem USA.
I just adore the transformation U2 went through in the eighties. Boys to men and then some, bloody astonishing development.
not a big fan of U2 but this song...this song is fantastic and timeless.
I see younger folk criticise this band and I think: yep
You weren't there. You don't understand
This is the soundtrack to my life
Love U2
I totally know what you mean!
The same I feel when they criticize New Kids on the Block and Vanilla Ice.
I had older siblings. I was the youngest of 10. I’m so grateful that they all gave me their love of all types of music!
My all time favorite Christmas song that isn’t a Christmas song.
But when I play it at the beginning of December nothing gets my heart moving like this one. Incredible song !

This song will never go old ✌️
Thanks U2
Anything from U2’s 80’s catalogue will never get old.
I’ll be listening to those songs till my very last breath.
Same here pete
U2 from the 80's was the best!
Unfortunately i cant say the same about their music after this time period
I reallly love U2 Sincé I was 14, Now I got 45 years old ....love to everybody from Guadalajara Jalisco México 🇲🇽❤️
"An angel in devil's shoes/Salvation in the blues" - what a great couplet
I like "Birdland of '53, sidewalk sounds like a symphony," too.
Don't agree with one line, though. She did look like an angel.
Street sounds like a symphony..
U2 I believe an Irish ☘️ Band! Writing an epic , soulful, American blues/gospel style song! One of my favorites! I get chills listening to it! Incredible pre chorus into chorus tension and release! Pure gold!
Best U2 song of all time
I love all of U2’s music gems, but this here is priceless! Touches the soul, especially for Lady Day!❤️

Brilliant group
U2s tribute to jazz and black music...and of course, Billie Holiday😊
Always loved how Bono's voice flies along the melody in this song
Yeaaah, oh that voice❤❤❤😎
I started to listen the music of U2 , in 1988 , with " Rattle And Hum " . I was just 14 , but i clearly remember what i felt ..... I was totally hooked ! I love that record and i love this wonderful one . I tried to sing It , many times , about some karaoke . It' s not easy , of course . I will try again .
First song ever I did on kareoke. Killed it. Beautiful song.
About Bono I always said:
9.9 out of 10 voice.
1 out of 10 on how to use it.

One of U2s most underrated songs. Doesn’t really sound like them either
To Billie Holiday like this. ❤
Amazing song that shows U2s soul and appreciation of people.
This Song is so Underrated!
Simply Genius!
It’s a lovely song!
True, even to play on electric and acoustic.
Cool song
Greatest band ever.
This is my favourite song from this album.
one of the most underrated and forgotten U2 songs of all time. Maybe cause this was early in their career and they had many more hits following this.
I was just looking for this the other day and I couldn't find it in HD.
I'm glad they released it now!
Beautiful record. Angel of Harlem. Beautiful classic
What a bloody voice he has!!! Incredible
That's why Paul Hewson is known as Bono Vox.
Could play this song on repeat all day!!!! 🥰
Happy birthday Rattle and Hum! A great album with some amazing songs. Angel of Harlem is a gem!
One the greatest free flowing pop/rock tunes ever!

A love song to New York City or what it used to be 😥
Finally in HD.
This is not in HD. I am not sure why they claimed that.
The great one real tribute to the SOUL era . and the queen. TheSOULfullest song from one the greatest rockbands in the earthrealm

I love U2 they are dedicated to the music and what they stood for. They didn't brag on how much drugs they did or how many women they slept with or how many cars they wrecked..U2 wasn't and still are not like that.
"Soul looove, this love won't let me go"...One of my favorite R&H tracks...as a tribute to legendary jazz singer"lady day" Billie Holliday, Bono's smile make me melt here...according to Bono he calls it a "juke box song..

The juke box comment maybe was just that there's no punk or celtic sound here, just straightforward rock and soul.
