  • How to remove the Key Barrel on a 2000 Peugeot 406.
    Because the Wiper Stalk also had to be removed i continued on and removed the indicator stalk, instrument cluster, drivers airbag, steering wheel, and clock spring to complete the video. Hopefully this is of use to you if you need to change or work on any of these parts.
    The 2000 406 is a pre multiplex D9, it may look similar to the rest of the 406s that continued to be built until 2004 however in late 2001 they changed to a multiplexed wiring system which brought with it a number of changes including the Com2000 which is a different design of stalks which incorporates the indicator and wipers in one unit, the Com2000 has a bad reputation for faults with the indicator stalk not locking in the canceled position and the indicator can inadvertently indicate left, the whole Com2000 unit must be replaced which requires the steering wheel to come off and that comes off differently than this design with a large spring used to hold the airbag module in place. The Com2000 unit also costs over £100 whereas on these pre multiplex cars if one of the stalks fails it can be pulled out fairly easily and another one can be purchased for under £20.
    I know it would make a good video to repair a Com2000 unit, however i don't want to dissect my own car. But i will do one as soon as i get the chance.

    Hey thanks for the video, but I must share a useful tip that you didn't do (and it was dangerous somehow not to do it): When removing the central screw for the steering wheel, unscrew it about half-way, and wiggle the steering wheel as if you were going to remove it completely. Given that the steering wheel usually gets stuck or kinda "glued", doing so will prevent you from getting a SMACK IN THE FACE or injuring yourself!! So: 1- unscrew the screw half-way / 2- give the steering wheel a wiggle and pull it towards you to free its "glued" state / 3- the steering wheel is now loose, continue unscrewing the screw and remove it, then NOW it's safe to remove the steering wheel.

      A useful tip, been smacked in the past the first time i changed a wheel, something you learn not to do twice haha. This video seems to have edited that struggle out your tip is a useful reminder to not remove the nut fully until the wheel has been loosened from the splines.

      what springs are these now?

    • @DanielBJames
      @DanielBJames 7 лет назад

      within the 2 metal parts of the ignition barrel there are 2 springs. I have now worked out where they go. One is to hold the flat metal plate in place attached to the steering lock, the other spring loads the small brass coloured bit of metal which locks the barrel in place against the metal cylinder fixed to the steeering column.

    I am having sudden problems with my heater blower. It does not function at all.
    Would you say the following comment below is a solution
    - and do you have any other technical suggestions
    406 is prone to damaged internal contacts in the ignition key barrel, one of the cables there supplies power to the heater blowers. What happens is there is a large supporting clip that takes the weight of the bundle of cables from the ignition barrel, this becomes loose or fails and allows the weight of the bundle to hang on the back of the barrel, the end result is loss of supply to various systems as well as damage to the key barrel itself. Drop the under steering kick pannel and try a wiggle of the bundle while you have everything switched on and the engine running, if you get intermittant blowers running you have found the fault!

      Hi there
      I have not personally dealt with the issue but i do recall it being common enough on the forums and a friend did have the issue and mentioned something about the key barrel

  • @TheBuildTeam

    Brilliant, but have an issue where the key does not want to turn at all! Does this mean i will have to chisel it out? Because as I understand the key needs to be in 0 position.

      Unfortunately the barrel is jammed, it can mean time with chisels, drills and angle grinders. Try as hard as you can to remove the key as it saves the faff, but unfortunately it is exactly that, a huge faff to remove a key barrel when the key is stuck.

      @@peugeotCitroen2CV Fixed. Was a stuck ignition switch, all it took is to take some pliers and strip the ignition switch by turning the key slowly with force, then i could remove the barrel entirely.

    I have problem with heater blower. I went through changing resistor. I dismounted ignition key barrel and inspected it. It have no sign of burned vires or anything. And also I replaced A/C panel to test if it was giving issue. But still heater blower not working. One of my friends told me that someone else had similar issue and key barrel looked perfectly fine but after swapping it to other piece this problem was fixed. I wanted to ask you if anybody had similar issue. As side note my key barrel is the same as in Peugeot partner. When I bought key barrel for peugeot V6 99. it was different so I had to give it back to the shop. Then I googled and I noticed same key barrel as mine and it was mainly for Peugeot Partner and for some Renault and only some pages stated that it is also for 406. Weird. So as for now I have problem to fing this ignition key barrel in shops and I wonder if anything else could broke and give me this issue or is it this damn key barrel? Weird that heater blower is wired to the key barrel in the first place. Other cars do nou sue such weird sollutions.

      Hi this is strange sounding, i dont think peugeot shares key barrels with renault (peugeot and renault are two very separate companies, its Citroen that is part of the PSA groupe with peugeot. Although they did share development of the PRV V6 engine along with volvo in the 70s that was about the extent of it)
      The key barrel turns an electrical switch. Once the barrel is removed the electrical switch part is relativley easy to replace. Its best to get the correct part for your car to eliminate that, although have you tried supplying power directly to the fan to determine if it is faulty?

    I'm getting AIR BAG error: Driver's module trigger. Open circuit.
    Some sources indicate faulty comm2000 module under the steering wheel.
    My car is exacly the same when it comes to specs. Which part here do I need to change if I want to fix comm2000? Is it a spring thing with orange plug/socket?
    I'll be very happy if you could answer me.

      Hi
      What year is your car? The car featured in this video is not one with the com2000 unit, that was fitted to cars made after 2002, you can spot them as the stalks are thicker and it is all one unit rather than separate stalk units.

    • @SzwarcuKX5
      @SzwarcuKX5 6 лет назад

      My car is from 2000.
      Any idea about the error? I can't sort it out like 3 months now :(
      I already soldered tensioner plug under the seat, but no effect.
      Thank you for your answer,

      @peugeotCitroen2CV  6 лет назад

      Hi
      From the error you mentioned "Drivers module trigger open circuit" is this the code that a PP2000 machine has generated.
      It could be in the steering wheel module, you might need a new airbag module or clockspring. 406oc.co.uk is the best place to ask about this, ive never had this error on a pre com2000 406 and at the very least someone on there may be able to point you in the right direction for spares.

    • @SzwarcuKX5
      @SzwarcuKX5 6 лет назад

      You are absolutely right :)
      I have changed the clock spring 3 days ago and it was fine until it broke again. Guy that selled me the spring didn't lock it in the center and the spring twisted to much and cracked.
      There are two types of clock springs in semi-mux 406's. One with locking teeth (it is imposible to twist them to much) and one without them.
      I'll let you know how the spring shenanigans turned out.
      Cheers!

    How many splines are there??????????

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV
      @peugeotCitroen2CV  8 лет назад +1

      On the steering wheel, tbh i dont know, generally the best way to get the right wheel is to remove one from the same era of car:
      96-99, D8 pre facelift
      2000-01 D9 facelift with semi multiplex wiring
      02-04 D9 multiplex, can be identified as it has the Com2000 indicator stalks which are thicker than the old ones.
      to avoid issues with the airbags not being compatible.
      Coupe wheels are an upgrade on the saloon, i think its a slightly smaller diameter and leather as standard but again the connectors for the airbags happened in the 3 phases
