- Russian forces have been gaining ground in their most significant advance in Ukraine for many months.
Troops crossed the border from Russia, north of Ukraine’s second city of Kharkiv, seizing territory in a surprise new offensive.
It follows months of largely static fighting over defensive positions in the east and south of Ukraine, where Russia has held territory occupied since its invasion in 2022.
Ukrainian forces appear to have been caught by surprise by the opening of the new front north of Kharkiv. Thousands of civilians are fleeing the area. The Russian advance could directly threaten Kharkiv if its forces reach artillery range of the city.

The reality is that Russia is one of the world’s military superpowers. Ukraine is a little ant in the road that is being feed by the West. Russia can win just by brut force. How long that will take who knows. Ukraine can only try to defend what land it has. It needs to negotiate a peace treaty with Russia and stop this senseless killing. Ukraine is starting to run out of young men to fight the war. Asking men that left Ukraine to come back to fight and die is a sign of desperation. Yes, that was true. Russia often sends poorly equipped soldiers into battle which forces them to resort to improvised weapons. In the first year it was common for them to send prisoners to dig trenches under fire, hence the incessant shovel joke.

Жест доброй воли после стамбульских переговоров, ожидалось что Украина подпишит мирный договор ( Российские войска просто ушли от Киева). Затем было Харьковское украинское наступление, боёв там особо не было, 1 город только 2 недели оборонялся потом дали русским уйти. ( Одни ушли, Другие пришли) Из под Херсона тоже вывели войска, для более удобной обороны( Одни ушли, Другие пришли) На войне территория не имеет ни какого смысла, важно кто выигрывает главные сражения, если уложить всю армию на границе, то всю оставшуюся часть страны некому уже защищать не будет, Россия просто отдала эти территории что бы не биться в невыгодных условиях. Все главные сражения Украиной проиграны, в изначально не выгодных местах, теперь либо 1е Россия начнёт забирать территории, либо 2е весь фронт рухнет, и Украина проиграет эту войну.

Well if BBC is reporting this then the situation must be worse than expected. Sometime a year and a half ago, I’d mentioned that Russia always gets creamed at the beginning of a war. But if they manage to hang in there for long enough, they always come back much, much stronger. Think about it:- World war 2, they took a total beating in 1941. By 1942, they had moved production of war stores east of the urals, and by 1944 they were storming the Oder, by 1945 Masters of much of the European landmass. Again, the Finnish Winter War: A disaster. The continuation war: also a disaster but for Finland.
Russia took more land in 48Hrs than Ukraine did in it's Summer 2023 Counter Offensive level of 'bad'

They are a patchwork of Spetznaz, Storm-Z, Chechen etc units as can be seen by their patches. These are the "shock" units to "kick in the door". After them comes the reserves of regulars

There are no frontline troops, fortified trenches or mines to slow down Russian advances in Kharkiv.
