That was a great video and and the time was great as well i do engining cleaning as part of the job and water in some area's isn't good so now i do the foom,thank you i will add the technics that ive learn to be better detailer.

Tend to be along the same frame of mind when it comes to engine bays. I am not a fan of blasting the engine of Snow Foam / Water. I would rather take my time and work through it section by section using a APC etc. Great video again.

Clean engine bays are my personal obsession, my classics are spotless but my daily is a mess so a clean up after watching this is high on my list of priorities. Must further dilute my Surfex as I only dilute to 50%
Spot on this video. Whenever I used a pressure washer for engine bays, when I am ready to start spraying I switch on the engine and let it run to get some warmth. I will then let it run for however long it takes for me to finish after wards in the drying department. The heat from the engine really helps get rid of the excess water. When I have been in a hurry, I used AS High Style [im getting old cant remember] as you can spritz it everywhere and let it dry. Works very well when time is short!
Great advice once again! Careful approach seems to be the tactic, I think the "spend time with dedicated engine clean" is the best thing I got from this! I've always done mine as a before or after quick half hearted method, but now it's " Today is engine day" I think my normal hose pressure is suitable especially using BH Surfex, it seems to eat up grease! I must admit I use a range of decent paint brushes, although I have started to invest in some quality detailing brushes now 😊 The Carpro PERL is amazing value and give great results, once again thanks Jon, top shelf video! 👍
Yes something like solution finish, own production? What i use and very fond off is hyper dressing from Megs its is waterbased and has a long durabilty...🤙🏼

Very interested in your video of cleaning engine compartments and advice about how to wash off the dirt. For me personally high pressure washing is too risky so I started using the garden hose on a low pressure spray. But I have found a more controllable method, that is using one of these garden pressure sprays used for spraying plants. Mine is a 10 litre air tight pressure sprayer where you hand pump the pressurised container. the kit I use has a very long nozzle with an adjustable spray. You now have full control over how much water can be used, and also because of the long delivery tube you are able to reach all the awkward nooks and crannies of the engine compartment

Good advise you should also try Aerospace 303 as an engine bay dressing. Spray it over the safe plastic and rubber components and leave it for a few hours, for a no hassle great finish.
can confirm, 303 Aerospace is a great dressing for engine bays. Just don't breathe it in because I got a 5 gallon jug of the stuff which came with a cancer warning on the label o.O You can also use 303 as a water-based tire shine but it splooshes off in the rain so its longevity on tires is shitty, and it's like 10x more expensive than tire shine. BUT it won't dry out & crack your tires like tire shine will.

Great, very informative. When I clean my Renault Trafic engine bay I keep it as dry as possible. They have a known problem of water getting into the injectors. I also use the bilt hamber sufux HD 5-1 sprayed directly on to the brush then rinsing with minimal water. I will try the car pro pearl, using auto finesse dressle am happy with it.
Great video. Tend to think it's best to steer well clear of using any sort of pressure washing technique on your engine bay. I use Megs super degreaser diluted down for cleaning works really well with gtechnic c4 trim restorer for dressing the plastics. Keep the videos coming mate!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

autoglym heavy duty tfr for engine or clean all apc 5.1 is awesome, and the advanced tfr with gloss enhancers is really good for those quick washes, all you need , simple

I always use a garden pump sprayer for cleaning engines. Also after degreasing I like to spray around a fair old bit of megs car wash to get product everywhere
engine bays are commen sense, ive cleaned hundreds of bays now and have all been treated with tfr, left for 2 minutes, areas such as ecus, anything that looks abit you know, I tend to take it easy but 90% of cars now are all cover in plastic and even if they are not, all plug connectors etc are water resistant! use the chemical, and leave it do it work, then quickly hit the bay down with a pressure washer quickly, and perfection , dress with a water based product straight after i.e aerospace 303, or autoglym supersheen, shut bonnet, job done
Great how to video again Jon 👏, it might be 4yrs old but your advice is sound. Watching other how to videos everyone has a similar opinion so you must be doing something right 👍. One thing I have noticed in my short time is the introduction of hand held steam cleaners, what's your thoughts on them?? Reduces the fear of getting components wet but they are an added expense that people on smaller budgets can't afford.
I think they can be time savers breaking down scum and dirt quickly essential in if your vsletting cars professionally. But I can done need it to maintain my cars

Engines are designed to be water resistant from below not from above in my opinion pressure washer are a strict no no apc in a sprayer and damp micro fibre are sufficient
Try an airless paint sprayer using water only, of course, to rinse your engine bay. Very little water and you can adjust the pressure. Also, if you use a reversible tip, you can get a fan spray and a concentrated stream spray.
I have an 09 charger and there are some electrical connectors that you can't get to. How can I clean the engine w/o getting the electrical connectors wet? Awesome video. Thanks so much.

A £1 bog brush from Poundland makes a good disposable tool for the muckier bits, saves the good brushes for the more visible areas. I think in a modern engine bay with a myriad of electronics, a pw is really overkill and often unnecessary. I use a hand held pump sprayer which gives me more control and doesn’t soak everything in sight. Even with the pw you still need to get in there with the brushes and do the work so why risk it? I like to put plastic bags around most electronics Then spray surfex hd 1:5 on everything Wait 5 min Then rinse off with tap water, not pressure wash. I just let it air dry Now you can take a towel, spray surfex hd 1:10 on it and wipe off all the electronic parts you previously covered. Now you can take a plastic and rubber dressing and apply it to all the plastic and rubber.

hey there use carpro per at 3:1 for general exterior dressing of rubber and plastics. Use 2 coats of solution finish on faded black plastic. On older cars if the rubber is perished and cracking or splitting you have to replace it unfortunetly.

most are things Ive bought but quite a lot came from doing the brands reviews... the novelty of getting detailing products free wears off pretty quick when you do like the "detailing channel" thing... nowadays I kind of really focus'd on consolodating the stuff I use down to a few core products which work for me.

yer been holding off with the brand reviews because they take a lot of like time to prepare and use the product and form a meaningfull opinion and then work out what to say, and then gather up footage etc.. the irony is you would get more views on you tube just doing a 2 minute video flying through the range saying its all excellent. but gotta try and stick to the roots of the channel which I guess is going into a bit more detail. so looking at a few brands now and ultimately gonna see if we can move forward with another review.
I only pressure wash when the engine is absolutely awful. Only for very very heavy build up. This is due to sheer time. Otherwise I do what you do. Top vid m8
I use a pet dryer that I found on amazon for £50 to blow out the gaps on the body and wheels and engine bays. Way cheaper than the master blaster stuff
Back in the old days I used to use just one simple engine degreases bought in bulk 25L one brush and a jet wash job done! Usually the engine bay would come out perfectly clean, occasionally had to dry out some of the electronics but mostly it was just fine. Too much flapping and fussing around these days and too many different products!
This is very good detailed information. You've answered a lot of queries and worries I had about cleaning an engine bay especially about older cars which I've got. Makes me want to try and give my 2017 Land Rover Evoque an engine bay cleaning ! Do you know if there is anything to protect from water in that particular model ? Much of it already has plastic covers, but I am paralysed at the idea of damaging something... Great video as always Jon...
I agree with your perspective on the engine cleaning. I never make my engine cleaning into my maintenance wash. My maintenance cleaning is weekly, some times two weeks. But I only clean my engine twice a year: one at the beginning of Summer, and another at the end of the Summer. Summer is the season of high temperatures (where dirt can bake in), and it is the season where dirt is everywhere (which will enter the engine bay and cover everything, and also it is the season where I travel more miles on my car). To me, the engine cleaning process is a complete different animal, which I may lose 2 to 4 hours (a complete morning, because on the afternoon it will be washing the outside of the car). Not only to be gentle to the cloth shield (on the bottom part of the bonnet), but also because I lose a lot of time vacuuming, protecting everything, seeing the state of some components (if the battery contacts have oxidation, if the air filter is in bad shape, etc...), and thinking on how to protect myself and the paint from chemicals. The garden hose, with a very slow flow of water is a really nice idea! Will use that for sure. To dry it, I use my compressor. I bought it on Lidl, for €120, and it serves me pretty well. I am thinking on buying a tornador, to not only spray the chemical / APC onto the engine bay, and afterwards blow compress air onto the engine bay. This is what Wurth reccomends, and a lot of Garages use this to give that professional look to the customer - of a cared and cleaned engine bay. Cheers! And keep up the great content.
best forensic detailing. sorry to go offtopic, but i just keep wondering how to justifie the price difference betweem fuso coat and the angelwax enigma. both 12 months. both paste waxes . both great beeding, purhapse the enigma has a little bit more gloss? but that could be a easy fix with a topper right? hope you can help me out
Just one detail...most of modern cars when you remove the battery, a lot of electronic settings that the custumer has made , in entertainemnest system, seat adjustments and more other are lost of the software and sould be resttings by the customer........very common the stereo system losses his security code and 99% of customers do not remember it.........those settings are stored in RAM type of memory witch is loosing the data when battery is removed ..... kind reegards
Its viable but like the grease in the engine bay generally a water based cleaner you can rinse away is the way to go.. inside the car you get like ground on grease and like dead skin that gets stuck to the plastics and steam is ideal.. but I dont typically see that many clean engine bays with steam. hot pressure washer though is brilliant.

Hi, the components behind the headlights on that particular engine (1 series) are they water tight because I have a 335i and behind the headlights there some wiring but it looks water safe but I’m not sure, how did you tackle that on this car? Because there’s a lot of dirt on those components.
Hey, I thought there were sealed units but I heard someone say they are not and they have breather holes. All the wiring connectors now on modern cars, the headshell and sockets have seals in them or are generally water tight so you will be fine to use water in and around the headlights (sensibly).
your welcome.. its really important mate, im always cautious as well. worth just seeing where the air intake pipe is presented as well.. generally they are well designed so water cant sit in them.. but always worth checking the intake pipe on a car as well like I mentioned in this video a lot of times they have been taken off and might not be fitted back on properly.

Only way this model works is very strong wow factor branding and revolutionary claims etc, and price tag with huuuuuge margins.

this video is years old. I shoot most things on a go pro hero 8 nowadays. no way Im shooting 4k though for you tube, that would be crazy. most quality issues around my footage are due to poor lighting and lack of camera understanding.

In terms of buying the ejuice i would strongly advise going to your local vape store and ask them what Nic strength they recommend based on your cigarette intake also you will have the chance to try all the flavours and get the low down on the mod you just bought, best of luck

Nice video as always John. Not everyone has access to a large air compressor, but if you do, the tornador can make very quick work of the engine bay.

Learned a lot, do you have a video on treating rubber seals and faded black plastics for older cars?
hey there use carpro per at 3:1 for general exterior dressing of rubber and plastics.
Use 2 coats of solution finish on faded black plastic.
On older cars if the rubber is perished and cracking or splitting you have to replace it unfortunetly.
Once again you hit it straight between the lines on advice. Just had a thought- do you have to buy all the products yourself when you do these reviews?
most are things Ive bought but quite a lot came from doing the brands reviews... the novelty of getting detailing products free wears off pretty quick when you do like the "detailing channel" thing... nowadays I kind of really focus'd on consolodating the stuff I use down to a few core products which work for me.

yer been holding off with the brand reviews because they take a lot of like time to prepare and use the product and form a meaningfull opinion and then work out what to say, and then gather up footage etc.. the irony is you would get more views on you tube just doing a 2 minute video flying through the range saying its all excellent. but gotta try and stick to the roots of the channel which I guess is going into a bit more detail. so looking at a few brands now and ultimately gonna see if we can move forward with another review.

I only pressure wash when the engine is absolutely awful. Only for very very heavy build up. This is due to sheer time. Otherwise I do what you do. Top vid m8
I use a pet dryer that I found on amazon for £50 to blow out the gaps on the body and wheels and engine bays. Way cheaper than the master blaster stuff

Back in the old days I used to use just one simple engine degreases bought in bulk 25L one brush and a jet wash job done! Usually the engine bay would come out perfectly clean, occasionally had to dry out some of the electronics but mostly it was just fine. Too much flapping and fussing around these days and too many different products!
This is very good detailed information. You've answered a lot of queries and worries I had about cleaning an engine bay especially about older cars which I've got. I'll definitely trust you 100% if you were detailing my car. I've just subscribed and I'll be going through your other videos. Do you also run this as a service and if so how to contact you?

I agree with your perspective on the engine cleaning.
I never make my engine cleaning into my maintenance wash.
My maintenance cleaning is weekly, some times two weeks.
But I only clean my engine twice a year: one at the beginning of Summer, and another at the end of the Summer.
Summer is the season of high temperatures (where dirt can bake in), and it is the season where dirt is everywhere (which will enter the engine bay and cover everything, and also it is the season where I travel more miles on my car).
To me, the engine cleaning process is a complete different animal, which I may lose 2 to 4 hours (a complete morning, because on the afternoon it will be washing the outside of the car).
Not only to be gentle to the cloth shield (on the bottom part of the bonnet), but also because I lose a lot of time vacuuming, protecting everything, seeing the state of some components (if the battery contacts have oxidation, if the air filter is in bad shape, etc...), and thinking on how to protect myself and the paint from chemicals.
The garden hose, with a very slow flow of water is a really nice idea!
Will use that for sure.
To dry it, I use my compressor.
I bought it on Lidl, for €120, and it serves me pretty well.
I am thinking on buying a tornador, to not only spray the chemical / APC onto the engine bay, and afterwards blow compress air onto the engine bay.
This is what Wurth reccomends, and a lot of Garages use this to give that professional look to the customer - of a cared and cleaned engine bay.

Just one detail...most of modern cars when you remove the battery, a lot of electronic settings that the custumer has made , in entertainemnest system, seat adjustments and more other are lost of the software and sould be resttings by the customer........very common the stereo system losses his security code and 99% of customers do not remember it.........those settings are stored in RAM type of memory witch is loosing the data when battery is removed .....

Its viable but like the grease in the engine bay generally a water based cleaner you can rinse away is the way to go.. inside the car you get like ground on grease and like dead skin that gets stuck to the plastics and steam is ideal.. but I dont typically see that many clean engine bays with steam. hot pressure washer though is brilliant.

Hi, the components behind the headlights on that particular engine (1 series) are they water tight because I have a 335i and behind the headlights there some wiring but it looks water safe but I’m not sure, how did you tackle that on this car? Because there’s a lot of dirt on those components.
Hey, I thought there were sealed units but I heard someone say they are not and they have breather holes. All the wiring connectors now on modern cars, the headshell and sockets have seals in them or are generally water tight so you will be fine to use water in and around the headlights (sensibly).

your welcome.. its really important mate, im always cautious as well. worth just seeing where the air intake pipe is presented as well.. generally they are well designed so water cant sit in them.. but always worth checking the intake pipe on a car as well like I mentioned in this video a lot of times they have been taken off and might not be fitted back on properly.
A trick from my photography days... Use a shower cap to cover item like intakes etc.

? wrong video. either way they run a different business model. Its a one man band thing. They fire out facebook boosted adds to a lot of people and hope X amount by it for each push. Only way this model works is very strong wow factor branding and revolutionary claims etc, and price tag with huuuuuge margins.

this video is years old. I shoot most things on a go pro hero 8 nowadays. no way Im shooting 4k though for you tube, that would be crazy. most quality issues around my footage are due to poor lighting and lack of camera understanding.
