  • The Showtime Los Angeles Lakers are one of the most historic teams in Basketball. Led by NBA Royalty Magic Johnson, the Lakers of the 80's won 5 championships and alongside Larry Bird and the Boston Celtics dominated an entire decade of basketball... however, while the accolades, and accomplishments of Magic Johnson and the 80's Lakers are known by NBA fans across the globe.. what about the other side of the Showtime Lakers? The Darker side that the NBA doesn't want you to know of, or remember?

Yes, my hat is totally off to Mr. Green, it takes a special human being to achieve what he did. He was the opposite of Magic Johnson who just gave in to temptation just way too easy. Also, Green was a great basketball player too, his Ironman status shows that, plus he was a helluva rebounder and defender. To hear that about James Worthy though shocks me and is disappointing.

It should be pointed out that Kareem had tremendous respect for his college coach, who was white and one of the greatest coaches of all-time, John Wooden. You can't blame Kareem for distrusting his high school coach after the white coach used a racial slur. Kareem was a reserve individual so it's not surprising he didn't trust the media who were not always fair to say the least. It has been good to see Kareem open up and share his basketball knowledge, views, and sense of humor in his post bball career.

I went to LA from NY BEFORE game 6 (went to a Supercross race before it) EXPECTING them to win allowing me to witness the championship game. Imagine my stress watching from my hotel room the closing minute when the Lakers were DOWN, then Laimbeer "fouled" Kareem and he hit both his throws giving them the win. I knew little of the behind-the-scenes stuff. What an eye-opener. I watched the Lakers, and read about the Lakers for decades, and only knew a few of these things. The last few years (I'm going on 74) I've drifted from the Lakers and prefer to watch developing teams grow on League Pass. Now I'm wondering when, or if, they'll resume play with this COVID19 thing going around. Kudos to A.C. Green for sticking to his beliefs and not being influenced by his peers; that's a rare thing. One time after a Lakers Hawks game at the Forum in 1984, I waited at the back ramp behind the Forum to get autographs from both teams. Several Lakers and Hawks would walk out and give those autographs. The players were very polite. Worthy, Jamaal Wilkes, Scott etc. I remember getting the autographs of Dominique Wilkins, Tree Rollins, Doc Rivers etc. When Rambis came out, I gave him my wallet so he could have something firm to write on while signing his autograph. When he was done, Rambis put my wallet in his jacket pocket and started walking away with it. I remember saying HEY! He turned around with the slighest of grins, and gave me my wallet back. Will never forget it. I remember thinking that Kevin Willis was one of the biggest human beings I had ever seen in person. I did not get Magic's autograph, because he never came out that back entrance. I noticed there was a Mercedes Benz parked against the wall down in the tunnel at some point. I saw Kareem coming from the depths of the Forum walking towards me, but he stopped at the Mercedes. I remember asking him from a distance, if I could get his autograph. I remember him politely saying that he was in a hurry and had to be somewhere, and he declined my request. He got in his Mercedes and drove off into the night. Did he decline because I was white? Who knows, but Kareem was very cordial. I can just imagine the hurt he felt when he was younger when his friend and coach called him those names. Just a little memory I wanted to share about the Showtime Lakers.
