- Wilt Chamberlain. There are very few people who can say that they lived a life that was half as entertaining as the one that Wilt would go on to live. See, the more and more I learn about the man, the more and more amused I become with his persona overall. On this channel so far we’ve talked about who the real Wilt Chamberlain is.. And kinda demythed some of the lies that plague his name.. We also talked about Wilt Chamberlain's bizarre rivalry that he held with another all time great, Kareem Abdul Jabbar.. Now in this video, we’re going to be taking things even further.. We’re gonna be taking a look at the man who Wilt Chamberlain was ready to risk it all.. In order to match up against.. In a match that not only had the possibility to end Wilt Chamberlain's career in the NBA.. but end his life overall.
We’re going to be taking a look at the multiple time heavyweight champion of the world, Muhammad Ali and the events leading up to a fight that had the potential to drastically change the histories, of two of the most historic Athletes of all time.

To this day I still think and argue with my friends over Muhammad Ali being the greatest most important sportsman ever. Ali was shunned off the ring in his prime, removing all his accolades from the history books and trying to erase any memory of his doings. He was holding to what he believed in a time and place where such things were not as acceptable as they are today. He lost all his sponsors and hability to make money because he had a conviction.
There are very little athletes that would put themselves in such position today. He stood to gain very little, but he still did it. Without the social outlets that exist today, the hability to shape a narrative was mainly focused on the established media outlets, mainly TV and paper, meaning that Ali himself wouldn´t have nearly the same opportunity to shape what was being said as we have today.
And thats why Ali is the most influencial sportsman to this day. For what he did outside the ring.
Ask yourself this. What athlete today would take 5 years off their carreers, in their primes, while being the champion, to support social and civil rights movements, losing most of their revenue and changing how people think of them to the point of getting death threats on a consistent basis. Yeah keep thinking might take a while.
Rest in peace Legend
they did jack johnson dirty as well.... which makes me believe all the speculation of the tyson fury cheating allegations that are recent in todays fight game... but Jack johnson was first not given a title shot for years .. and when he became champion was charged with some bogus law and forced into exile and on the run from government .. He lived outside the country to where he could not properly make money or train and wound up losing the title.. there is even speculation that he threw the fight because they had threats to hur this wife... crazy what they would do to dethrone a black champion.. shouts to Mayweather who was able to duck and survive all the bullshit htrown his way...
@@anthonywright5960 I wasnt aware of Jack Johnson´s situation, thats is very sad that stories like his aren´t better known.
And I completly agree with you, even though I wouldn´t say Mayweather is my favourite boxer, he deserves alot of praise not only for his skills inside the ring but also having the clearview and vision to create his own promoting company and brand.
Can´t even imagine the kind of backlash he got from doing this. Hands down very deserving of respect and appreciation
Who would argue Muhammad Ali is the greatest sportsman? And if they think not, who did they choose? I mean it’s between him and Michael Jordan, Ali is more popular globally than any athlete.

Wilt is the greatest Center the NBA will ever know. Had Yao MIng been healthy, he might have challenged that title a little, but Wilt Chamberlain is my all time center.
He made 18/20 free throws from half court warming up for a game; he could leap 42 inches and stood 7'3" tall with a 7' 9" wingspan. He ran a 4.5s 40 yard dash, and beat NFL MVP running back Jim Brown in 3 straight foot races. He could dunk the ball from the 3 point line.
He could shoot 3 pointers with a sky hook shot, and had an unstoppable mid-range shot called the Fade away. How great was Wilt? Guess who stole his "Fade away" Jump shot??? MICHAEL JORDAN!!!!!
for 7 seasons in a row, he scored 40+ PPG, and grabbed 25 rebounds a night.
ALSO -- he played 48.5 MPG one season. Durability? Bruh! He played an entire season straight with no time out!!! Oh! Forgot to mention he's the only center to ever lead the entire NBA in total assists in any year!

Ali was courageous beyond limits to have the Guts to get in the ring with Wilt Chamberlain. To even stand in front of Wilt trash talking him is a feat in it self. I saw one time when Ali was in trouble in the ring with Frasier, his legs was wobbly and still found the strength in those moments to show boat and antagonise Joe while about to be knocked out from extreme punishment! I never saw another fighter able to do that again in my life. Ali was so Courageous in the ring and out of it as well!!

You made a historical error: The original namesake of Ali, Cassius Marcellus Clay, was one of the lead abolitionists of slavery from the south during the time of slavery in opposition to his family members who owned slaves. He founded the abolitionist newspaper The True American. Cassius Clay was beaten, stabbed, and shot for his anti-slavery views.
He still owned them. No painting over that sir.
@@dylanhanson4546 you lived in a house/apartment that your parents had when you were growing up, there is no painting over that too.
The idea that you are holding him responsible for something that he had no control over and when he could he promptly got rid of his slaves and fought for end slavery is simply short-sighted and moronic.
Wow impressive someone did their homework bravo. I applaud you well done
Thanks for saving me the effort.
Thanks for telling the history of Ali’s true original namesake. It’s amazing that history is so easily changed by those who don’t really know history.
I didn’t know Cassius Marcellus Clay was an abolitionist. Now I need to research it myself so I can learn more.
My question is this: Did Ali ever admit this later in his life? I am guessing not. And did his parents name him Cassius Marcellus in honor of that man?
I still think Ali led an extraordinary life. He left the Nation of Islam and his views changed. I could go on and on.
But thanks for being up a historical fact that is not known to many in the public.
We all know Cus D'Amato one hell of a Trainer. Who made 16years old kid into Olympic gold medalist, 18 year kid Mike Tyson into World heavyweight champion . So Cus D'Amato wasn't joking. You can see the same when 70years old Cus D'Amato was sparring young Ali. He was wikipedia of boxing training methods.
And it was simply impossible for Ali to defeat a world class athlete Wilt Chamberlain (Greatest basketball player ever) who was physically fit and about to train by a trainer who had studied most pro boxer's fighting style including the Opponent.
In the other hand Ali had no chance study his opponents fighting style prior to fight, just because he would not able to predict opponents fighting style. And he knew what Cus D'Amato was capable of.
And height & reach wasn't in his side too. No wonder why he didn't fight Wilt. 7 and half feet muscular athlete vs 6ft boxer. Come on. Wilt was a giant - most dominant player of his era.
Ali was arrogant & cocky & had desire to win but wasn't a fool.
@Danny Pom in your dreams. Size matters. It wasn't a bare knuckle street fight or Muay Thai fight or wrestling match but Boxing. Height matters. And wilt Chamberlain was greatest basketball player of all time. He was muscular &weighted 300lbs. 1&half feet taller , 100lbs heavier than Ali. Having Cus D'Amato on his corner Ali could not able to defeat him. It's simply impossible. And Ali mostly fought shorter guys than him. Frazier defeated him once. So Ali wasn't invincible either.
The more I hear about Wilt, the more I am amazed.
Yup
Ali was surely one of a kind, who inspired many of us.

You really should read exactly who Cassius Clay (the abolitionist) was.
He wasn't a slave owner. He inherited slaves and he immediately freed them. Twice, an assassination attempt was made on his life while he was speaking about freeing all slaves.
Once he fought off 6 brothers as they beat him, stabbed him and shot him. He killed one of them.
Another time while being shot, he was pulling his silver tipped Bowie knife out and the this blocked the bullet as it lodged into his chest. He then proceeded to cut the dude's eyes out.

I'm from Louisville. Ali is a hometown hero; I've got nothing but respect for the man. But he joined Islam out of ignorance to the fact that Muhammad had black slaves as well as his entourage. It was just a way that he could stick it to the man and rightfully so. Louisville was a progressive town at that point. KY was neutral during the Civil War and many Louisvillians did not respect slave traders coming down the Ohio. That being said: There were still plenty of bigots in and especially around Louisville and Ali felt them. His conversion was reactionary, and I can understand that. But Islam is not a religion that looks down on kidnapped, African slavery. If anything, the early fathers of the religion encouraged it. He just didn't read The Quran in its entirety. He was an angry young man, with extreme talent and something to prove. God love him. He's buried across the street from my crib. Rest easy champ; you've earned it.
Good actor too. He was great in "Conan The Barbarian".

That’s bs
Let SDC live!
Actually it was the other way around of what the title says, saw the whole segment of their measurement video, where Ali said wilt is a no match to him. Hearing that wilt asked Ali to say it again to which he didn't repeat it. I don't know how others feel about it but that was a sign of fear to me.
viper 444 ...Wilt Chamberlain was not a boxer.
only real ogs remember the original title💯
what was it
If I'm not mistaken I believe Muhammad Ali was named after Cassius Marcellus Clay who was an abolitionist. He was known as The Lion of Whitehall. He freed all of his father's slaves and is responsible for freeing other slaves. He was one of the people who forced Abraham Lincoln to draft the emancipation proclamation. You should check out his story it reads like a action movie pretty dope.
Me: *reads title*
Oh that guy
At that point Ali was World Champ, he was fearless after beating an aged Sonny Liston, who some years earlier, was unbeatable, even stories Liston threw the fight
Who else already watched this twice? 😂😂😂😂

Excellent video and definitely 20 minutes well spent if you enjoy celebrity history info.

Not just any boxer, but the greatest of all time.
Fascinating and well researched. Thanks for the hard work and upload.
I think it was Wilt that scared Ali, not the other way around. Nobody wanted to mess with Wilt.
No, Ali was a different breed, he was fearless and i think he could win against wilt comfortably
@@8rich24 Ha - ha u trippin. Wilt would beat him easily
@@QankoIvanov Hell to the fuck no wilt would not beat ali. Ali is the greatest boxer to date.
