Tears. I closed my eyes when I listened. As a boy, age 9-11, that was just another great song on the radio. Now that I'm old, I treasure all the old school brothers & sisters who overcame oppression & whose music changed the world. Roberta Flack is a gift to humanity.
She was my dad's favorite female singer and that is literally what he would do when he would listen to her album. He would sit with his eyes closed! I think Dionne Warwick was next in line for his favorite female singers!
One of the most beautiful songs ever! Written by the Salford born, English working class Communist Ewan McColl, for his then wife Peggy Seeger. He was also the father of the late, great Kirsty McColl.
I first heard this song when I was a child, around the mid 60s. It just enters your space, gets your full attention, saturates you with peace and beautiful harmony. It never gets old, It's just magical.
Why are there not any songs of this worth anymore Have the heart and emotions been robbed from us Has our way with words deteriorated to nothing What a beautiful song What a beautiful performance Thank you miss Roberta flack
Total perfection from this incredible artist. Came out in '71, and was on the soundtrack for the movie 'Play Misty For Me', which starred Clint Eastwood totally out of character, as a late night radio DJ. Roberta Flack is soooooo good with this song, as she was with another monster hit in '73. (Killing Me Softly) Hall of Fame first ballot, for all time great American artists.
Roberta Flack is such a total class act. Beautiful voice with a beautiful soul. I'm so glad I was a child of the 60's and got to grow up listening to classics like this.
This song is one of the most beautiful songs ever sang. Roberta's voice has this haunting voice that hangs in the air, hugging ever inch of you passions and imagination... Love this song...
Hello Angela: Oh yes...the lovely, pure, magic of this woman's voice is always a blessing to the soul. Interesting that she switched the lyrics/verses around in this version, but I don't care. She could sing it backwards and it would still move me. Thank you for reacting to this classic! 👍👍❤❤
What a beautiful reaction. You began with an expression of respect for an artist who came highly recommended...but as she sang, the warmest smile began to shine all the way from your soul. By the time she got to the second verse, your face caught up with your heart, and it was like the sun dawning. You understood what it was like for all of us...the first time...the first time ever we heard Roberta's golden voice.
This was a time in life when everyone still loved one another. Still to this day get goose bumps listening to this, so many good memories of a better time in life.
Possibly my favorite love song. Listen to the studio version too. Such beautiful chords, words, voice, everything. She was born in the mountains of North Carolina, in a place where many gifted souls are spawned, and live.
This song was written by Ewan MacColl for his wife Peggy Seeger. Ewan’s daughter is now best known for the duet with the Pogues on the song Fairytale of New York. Peggy survives them both and is still touring aged 90.
Incredible voice. This is another of those artist who came from a time where autotune was not needed. This is indeed a great song...but I admit, when the Clint Eastwood movie "Play Misty For Me" came out and this was the song used....that is the image I have. (It was a movie about a stalker.)
She’s an amazing artist. Beautiful song. I can listen to her forever. Please react to her song “Where Is The Love” which she sings with Donny Hathaway. Thank you for playing this masterpiece
Thank you my friend for playing this song. It is truly one of the most beautiful songs ever, and it brings tears to my eyes every time. I know you will find your true love some day and feel everything she sings of. All the best. Rick
As a young teen, I got a 'Best of' LP by Roberta Flack. She blew my mind, her voice is a one-off special, with its own unique tone and smoothness. Her songs have filled my soul with beauty!
A great quote I once read, went something like 'You spend your whole life with the world revolving around you and then once your child is born, your world begins to revolve around them' ❤
Great reaction. Is her voice so beautiful and moving or what??? I hadn’t seen/heard this live version so thanks. I’m sure you’re hearing about “Killing Me Softly” which is beautiful and a must but I’d like to add “Jesse” which is so hauntingly gorgeous - and I’m curious whiff your take on it might be. She truly has one of the most beautiful gifts of voice!
She is a classically trained muscian who had a string of hit records as a solo artist and duets with Donny Hathaway in the 70'. Her music was the soundtrack of my childhood.
I am a 6'5" white guy who loves The Ramones & Punk Rock, so i am not in Roberta's demographic lol, but whenever i want to spend some quiet, special time with my wife, with the lights down low, Roberta is my go to
I'm a product of the 50's, 60's and 70's and we old folks love our much so much because music from that era told a story, expressed feelings of love and warmth. Even the faster pace songs from that period expressed feelings of excitement and love.
The profound beauty, honesty , sensitivity and unfathomable depth of a womans love t rising up from her soul and poured onto paper. Then in a beautiful joining of souls passed on to another woman l who has this amazing gift of being able to take the deep crys of anothers soul and interpret them to the world in song without loosing or corrupting it's beauty has the rarest of giftsunderstands in taking perfect another women learner the secret
This is one of my favorite songs. She is such a great singer. I would go to a multi level parking garage and put in her CD. Then I would turn the volume all the way up. The song reverberated through the whole parking garage. It is unbelievable.
Heard a lot of songs in my life. Still can’t think of one more piercingly beautiful. And this one is sped up a bit for the benefit of live performance. The studio version is so incredibly slowly paced, and she lingers over each and every word. Magical.
What a beautiful song. Remember this song, when it was played on the radio stations. Fell in love, with song. When I got married, this was our wedding song. Every time we listen, to this beautiful song, we both cry. What a voice
Beautiful song from an amazing artist, and an even better reaction from you, Angela!! I am sure you will experience the joy one day of looking into the face of your child for the first time! You will never forget it and you will never stop looking!! Would you consider ever doing a song comparison reaction? Both BJ Thomas and Blue Swede did very different versions of the song "Hooked On A Feeling" and it would be awesome to see what you thought of the two of them, in one video or two!! Peace out!
A truly beautiful record. 'The First Time...." has a sort of theatrical understatement - like a stage whisper allowing for solemn words. The song is presented by Roberta Flack like pure poetry, which cannot fail to move you somewhere, somehow.
Flack did not write the song but brought it to greater heights and prominence then the original. From Wikipedia: "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" is a 1957 folk song written by British political singer/songwriter Ewan MacColl for Peggy Seeger, who later became his wife. At the time, the couple were lovers, although MacColl was still married to his second wife, Jean Newlove. Seeger sang the song when the duo performed in folk clubs around Britain. During the 1960s, it was recorded by various folk singers and became a major international hit for Roberta Flack in 1972, winning Grammy Awards for Record of the Year[1] and Song of the Year. Billboard ranked it as the number one Hot 100 single of the year for 1972. I think of this song everytime I think of both my children the day they were each born.
This song, as sung by Roberta Flack is just mesmerizing. I was about 10 years old when this song was a hit (I believe it was around 1972, if memory serves). I knew nothing of the kinds of feelings she describes in this song, but still, it gave me goosebumps the way she sung it. And in performances like this, she sings it live with the same perfection. Now, I understand the feelings. If you haven't reacted to it yet, you might want to react to "Killing Me Softly" also by the great Ms. Flack.
This is one of the most beautiful love songs ever written. Roberta Flack is such an amazing singer. Thanks for reacting to this Angela!
Absolutely !
Agreed. Although I prefer the studio version to this one, it is still stellar.
She sang the most romantic songs. We were so lucky in the 70's to have such great music
this song was in "play misty for me" where clint eastwood punched that crazy lady.
Something tells me she did this in the first take
Not a dry eye in the house after that what a beautiful tune and equally beautiful person ❤❤❤,
Tears. I closed my eyes when I listened. As a boy, age 9-11, that was just another great song on the radio. Now that I'm old, I treasure all the old school brothers & sisters who overcame oppression & whose music changed the world. Roberta Flack is a gift to humanity.

Roberta Flack is a TRUE GIFT FROM GOD! First, God gave us WOMEN. Then topped it with Roberta! 👍❤️
One of the most beautiful songs ever! Written by the Salford born, English working class Communist Ewan McColl, for his then wife Peggy Seeger. He was also the father of the late, great Kirsty McColl.
Good lord, this one just rips the heart from your chest. What a voice. What a performance. What a talent. Love. Love. Love.
I first heard this song when I was a child, around the mid 60s. It just enters your space, gets your full attention, saturates you with peace and beautiful harmony. It never gets old, It's just magical.

I think the song is from the play Jesus Christ superstar .
Roberta Flack is such a total class act. Beautiful voice with a beautiful soul. I'm so glad I was a child of the 60's and got to grow up listening to classics like this.

Roberta was in the moment, in the song, in our hearts. Mesmerizing and hypnotic performance!
One of the most underrated voices ever Check out probably her biggest hit Killing me softly You will love it
Thats another classic from this very talented lady.
She just sings so effortlessly. So beautifully. Like an angel.
Hello Angela: Oh yes...the lovely, pure, magic of this woman's voice is always a blessing to the soul. Interesting that she switched the lyrics/verses around in this version, but I don't care. She could sing it backwards and it would still move me. Thank you for reacting to this classic! 👍👍❤❤
I noticed the lyric change also! But doesn't matter.. pure talent, live performance
No one could sing like Roberta.
What a brilliant performance. To sound that good live just shows her talent.
What a beautiful reaction. You began with an expression of respect for an artist who came highly recommended...but as she sang, the warmest smile began to shine all the way from your soul. Roberta is just so darn talented. She's like a primal force. Love her!
I'm seventy-seven and Roberta still gives me chills with this song. A all time favorite. Thanks.
One of the most beautiful songs have written and sung. Her voice was something special too. What a memory.
Beautiful song, beautiful artist. I remember when it first came out, I had never heard anything like it before. Great reaction!
This song was in the Movie "Play Misty for me". I played this at my husband of 40 years memorial. So beautiful!
Played this song at my wedding 💑.,It was the first song we danced to as husband and wife and it's been downhill ever since 😆 lol
This image of Roberta at the piano lovingly singing from the heart is soooo moving. What expression, timbre, phrasing - spectacular!
This is the song that beat out Gilbert O’Sullivan’s “Alone Again Naturally” for “Song of the Year”…
It just goes to show us of the quality songs back then.
...and so it should! Well deserved Roberta!
Wow! I didn’t know that. Thank you 🙏
That was a great song as well 🙌🙌
this is the song taken from the movie where clint eastwood punched that crazy lady.
One of my all time favorite songs, listening to her in the 70's was amazing and still brings tears as I hear her today.
Great song sung with all her heart! I remember this song from the movie Play Misty For Me with Clint Eastwood! He played a radio DJ! Goodbye for now!
I have always loved this song. What a beautiful voice.
I love this song, the lyrics and R Flack's version. So incredible.
One of the greats!
This song was written by Ewan MacColl for his wife Peggy Seeger. Ewan’s daughter is now best known for the duet with the Pogues on the song Fairytale of New York. Peggy survives them both and is still touring aged 90.
What A wonderful background story of this simply divine tune.
Incredible voice. This is another of those artist who came from a time where autotune was not needed. This is indeed a great song...but I admit, when the Clint Eastwood movie "Play Misty For Me" came out and this was the song used....that is the image I have. (It was a movie about a stalker.)
One of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard!!!
I love watching for that moment when it is clear that the music, the lyrics, or the voice has touched your soul
This version is my very favorite. She makes you feel it. So moving. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks.
Oh my God! She sounds amazing live! I forgot how beautiful she is. Gorgeous performance.
She’s an amazing artist. Beautiful song. I can listen to her forever.
Please react to her song “Where Is The Love” which she sings with Donny Hathaway. Thank you for playing this masterpiece
man i loved this song when it came out and still today
One of the most beautiful songs ever !!
this beautiful song chokes me up every time
The lyrics are pure poetry to your first (and hopefully only) real love. I have heard countless covers but no one, NO ONE does it better than Roberta.
Roberta's cover is better than the original. The best covers are by Mary Travers (solo) and by Peter, Paul & Mary.
How good is that voice!?!?!? An absolutely amazing performance.
56 years old today. Such a beautiful voice. Still grabs my heart. Such a pleasure.
🌞Happy Birthday!
Yes and many more
This is how u sing a song beautiful pure and effortless
Thank you my friend for playing this song. It is truly one of the most beautiful songs ever, and it brings tears to my eyes every time. I know you will find your true love some day and feel everything she sings of. All the best. Rick

Breathtaking voice and ideal…
One of the most beautiful and sincere songs, and performed by such an amazing vocalist. Roberto Flack’s voice is perfection at its finest.

She truly has one of the most beautiful gifts of voice!
Roberta’s pitch is sooo perfect. One of the great singers. She sings like a dream.
I can remember even as a child I was mesmerized by Roberta's performances. My admiration has only grown.
She is a classically trained muscian who had a string of hit records as a solo artist and duets with Donny Hathaway in the 70'. Her music was the soundtrack of my childhood.
To sing this perfectly and fully while live? Is truly wonderful. Most performers can only sing that well in a controlled studio.
When the radio played songs like this every single day of our lives.. it was a higher vibration to resonate to..NZ
No one can sing this song like the beautiful Roberta Flack. Many have tried but hers will always be the best.
Soulful, Jazzy...just down right beautiful! One of best voices of all time. She is also a very good piano player.
It's early morning here and I'm bawling my eyes out what a beautiful performance from Roberta outstanding.
yeah. Just pure beautiful. Something so perfectly crafted.
I am a 6'5" white guy who loves The Ramones & Punk Rock, so i am not in Roberta's demographic lol, but whenever i want to spend some quiet, special time with my wife, with the lights down low, Roberta is my go to

The muse of the song, Peggy Seeger, is an artist and still performs occasionally.
