Hello Angela: This is an anthem to sadness, disappointment and misery...still, it is quite melodic and easy on the ear. Always loved this tune in spite of its somber vibe. Thank you.
My mum died from cancer in 1985 when I was 28. From the moment my mum had been diagnosed and given a few months to live, my life changed forever and I definitely grew up and stopped acting a clown. I guess what I am trying to describe it that her illness, suffering and death took the fun out of my life for a very long time.
You didn’t stop it once. You stopped swaying when he mentioned his father dying. We all feel this song like you did. He has another hit called Claire. He wrote both songs.
Well Said but in The UK he had multiple hits , of which this one and Claire were the biggest followed by "Nothing Rhymed"/"We Will" "Get Down" "Matrimony" "Oh! Wakka Do Wakka Day " etc :)

Wow, this song had so much heart felt meaning. We lost our beloved mom, 1 year ago. This was moms favorite song. Listening to this song, has me in tears. Thank you for the great memory. RIP - MOM. Love you always.
The power seems to stem from the simplicity but, on closer inspection, it really comes from the nearly perfect coordination of melody, lyric, rhythm, scoring and, of course, the harmony. This song is so unfairly underrated. I wish I could shake Gilbert O'Sullivan's hand, personally and thank him.
I've always liked this song. It's a good one to listen to when you're in that mood. It's very cathartic. And, for me, it's a reminder that when life has got you down, there are people out there who have it worse.
this is so funny. i had just listened to this song from his offical music vid, and 11 seconds later you posted it on your channel. i had to listen to it again. and it was so much easier having you listening too. i guess it's true- misery loves company, not alone again, naturally.
I watched the expressions on your face and know you felt it, yes, sad song. It is part of life. Makes me remember when my father passed, my mothers heart was broken. Then she passed not long after. Thanks for sharing this pretty girl.
Enjoyed your reaction. Would like to recommend a group called Bread. Some of their songs that I believe you would really enjoy: If, Baby I’m-a Want You, Make It With You, Diary, Everything I Own, plus many more great hits. Thanks for considering.
Very few songs are written this way and Gilbert O'Sullivan made a masterpiece here another song like tis is " Time " by Alan Parson's Project I recommend that song too .
Please don't take this the wrong way. But I have been watching video reactions for a year now. You by far in my humble opinion ,have the biggest heart of them all! If I ever met a woman like you, I would never let her get away! Thank you for being you!
This song has always struck me as very Beatles-like, though now that you mention it I can also hear the Bee Gees as well. Lyrically, the song is all too relatable to me, having lost both parents, my only sibling, all grandparents, and various extended family and friends over the years (the friends not to death, but to moving on). Alone again, naturally, indeed.
Every word of the lyrics works and works beautifully. I am so grateful for the things I have and more so for people and things I've lost and treasure more than ever. God Bless You, Gilbert O'Sullivan!
You’re spot on with The Bee Gees comparison. When I heard it for the first time I thought of The Bee Gees also, and some later Beatles stuff as well. Gilbert did indeed write the song himself, and did so at the age of 15, believe it or not. It’s hard to imagine after hearing this song, but his songs were usually much happier and playful. Great song that holds a lot of memories for me. I love your videos! Keep them coming!😊
Sad songs have a special place on my playlist. I really don't understand why I like listening to heart break songs. Can't explain it, it's just the way it is I guess.
A true classic and beautiful song, very popular in South America in the early 70’s. I never realize how sad the song was until I began to learn English. I guess back them the melody alone was good enough.
You missed the 1st verse..due to reading the crossing caption..where you hear 1st meaning where he was heading to top floor to jump.. Wax written beautifully plus Score was as soft and excellently provided😊
What I love about listening to the reaction posts is that I too start listening to the lyrics more. I know this song, but I've never really listened to the words ... thank you.
Still I wake up every day put one foot in front of the other and make it through the day. the toughest part is when you lay back down at night still feeling all alone even in a crowded room. standing in a darkened corner not trying to be seen or noticed. just trying to leave unnoticed by anyone.
I was seven when this song was released. I was always afraid that my safety and love at that age would one day be taken away. All I can say is that with God's grace and mercy, you manage to keep breathing and a different life takes that life's place (A new normal). Time helps, but this song still pulls at the heartstrings because there are so many parts that I can relate to.
Perhaps the first song I vividly remember. Was on radio constantly along with Bill Withers Lean on Me. Always have a soft spot for this song. I was probably around 10 years old. ❤️
He is a great storyteller, may I suggest “All They Wanted to Say” by Gilbert O’ Sullivan. You really appreciate the lyrics and that song is his tribute to 9/11. It is very well written and unbelievably sad. It’s not well known so it would be great to have people hear it.
This song came out at the time my fiancee of the time broke up with me and it helped me endure, knowing someone else knew the feeling. It seems strange, but I'd imagine half the people in the world know that feeling and the longer you live the more certain it is you'll know it before it's all said and done and accordingly as sad as it may make you feel if you don't know it yet, it's songs like this that can help you get through it.
Great song....true lyrics....life comes and goes....we come and leave the world by ourselves.....it shouldn't be sad if you believe in a new beginning..... maybe not the same..... maybe better..... with all the good souls and memories revisited
Before the song is over, O'Sullivan questions the existence of God, sings about the deaths of his parents and considers the ways that grief can absolutely destroy you. Gilbert O'Sullivan in an interview, said this song was not about his life. It was just an idea that he came up with and wrote. "Alone Again (Naturally)" is an introspective ballad, starting with the singer contemplating suicide after being left at the altar after his bride deserted him, and then telling about the death of his parents. O'Sullivan has said that the song is not autobiographical, as he did not know his father (who died when O'Sullivan was 11) very well, and that his father had mistreated his mother.
