Sequoia would be an expensive road trip with that terrible MPG. It feels like you've reached peak Delica, but also don't sell it just as you get it how you want it. There's nothing wrong with enjoying it as a weekend/holiday vehicle. That's why you built it!
Sequoia isn't THAT terrible on the highway. But with more off-road mods it would certainly get worse.
I'm happy to continue to enjoy the Delica. Then sell it for a new project in the future!
Peak would be a 1.9 tdi swap
I have a sequoia with an exhaust and x pipe. Helped mpg about 14 mixed driving.
@@Addison0526 or like om606, om605
@@_Gingium_ I think you may sell Sequoia and buy something else maybe swap it. For example in my country (Cyprus) generally we use Mitsubishi L200, Pajero or Suzuki Vitara. Some of these guys swapped their engines. For example ona of them swapped Nissan Navara and he put RB26DETT on it. You can build something powerful but also capable for tough off roading and overlanding
I'm not surprised the Baja did so well; I used to have an 04 Outback and I drove that thing all over forest backroads in rural PA that looked a lot like these trails. I miss that thing, will definitely own another 3rd gen someday!
Yessir! Subaru's are super capable! Made me miss my lifted WRX.
@@_Gingium_ well then why not get one?
Dont even remind me, i am still emotionally unstable when seeing anything even remotely close to my 01 Legacy, 4 years after it finally fell apart into a rust pile.
I think it was a 4th gen, very comfy driving and even though it wasnt an Outback, it was still a pleasure to wade through deep snow and muddy roads here and there.
I will get another one as soon as i can, even if it takes me 10 years.
@@Marcus-rn2cj because he already did a video series on a wrx
@@sniperassasin1264 i know and honestly that WRX was my favorite and the drift truck I'm not a huge fan of miatas mostly cuz i don't fit in em without the hard top off even then it's not a very comfortable to drive lol.
I enjoy the vanity of the Delica, it's such a cool and unique vehicle however I can't see it being used for much more than a camper, and I don't think theres much more room for modification to make it a better off roader. On another note, the Toyota Sequoia is a nice balance between the necessary size to be a good camper and the equipment necessary to go off roading to the extent that you need.
you dont know how capable delicas are. Go watch Martin VanMan on youtube. He takes that thing on the hardest trails. I also own a delica its a very capable vehicle
@@dieselgeezer18 I don't know Delicas you're right, so I wouldn't be able to think of any mods to make it a more capable off roader. Fair point.
Some Delicas came with a rear LSD and I can tell you it makes a world of difference. A front air locker, a winch, and some rock sliders would really transform the Deli into a true go anywhere machine. Also, here on the east coast, the Deli is skinny enough to take on some UTV trails that the Jeeps just don't fit down.
"that man in the Baja" tbh wants me to get the WRX out in the trails
Yessssss
If it puts a smile on your face you are doing it right. Don’t let others tell you differently, I enjoy the camping videos.
I would say keep the Delica, I think its a great addition to the channel, much better than the bus. Maybe go through and refresh on maintenance and you can keep it for weekend camping trips/road trips. Like you said it is a much better camper than the Sequoia.
Personally I like the delica the best. It's a cool vehicle and pretty unique. Here in NZ people love them ae, actually quite hard to get hold of one.
I've got an '87 range rover, and as I'm forever alone it's perfect for me. Big enough that with no back seats I can sleep in it. On most 4x4 trails it's pretty damn good, it genuinely isn't that bad on fuel in fairness, and on road it is super comfy. Surprisingly it's also the most reliable car I own...
I think the delica is so unique, I would love to see more put into it!
The Delica is a very nice vehicle, perhaps make it more reliable with updated engine stuff like good glow plugs and some looking at the differentials to see if they can be made to lock so it can just go over terrain easier, it was spinning the front wheel that was in the air and coming to a stop like that so I at least can tell the front diff is open, locking diffs would make it far better at going over the trails, and good glow plugs is something of a wear item that just needs replacement. But really, its a camper that you've put a lot of work into so enjoy it, relax, go camping, make memories in it, its what a camper is for and you've done a wonderful job making it :P
The all-custom (and very expensive) step-up from the Delica would probably be taking an older cab-over van like the 1967-1970 Chevy Van, tearing the insides apart to Fabium up a whole camper interior, then tearing the suspension apart to fit the engine to a transfer case and a pair of wide solid axles about as wide as can be legally used for stability. I'd imagine some kind of heavy-duty pin and hydraulic setup could be used to raise and lower the suspension, lower and stiffen by preloading the springs for highway trips and then raise it again for the softer twisty axles for overlanding. But at that point its a specialty apocalypse-ready camper that could tank Armageddon in the face and keep on driving unhindered XD
Basically the Delica is real gold for what its built for, definitely a Diamond-rank vehicle at least.
The reason the buns aren’t connected is bc you got Philly cheese steak rolls not hot dog buns. Says right on the package lol
I didn’t know 😭😭
If you have starting issues just check the fuel railes. Some times they get air on it. I had the same problem in my l300. Same car. Easy fix .
I legitimately had to double check that wasn't my baja in the start of the video. I'm in Alabama with a black/Grey NA baja, so I thought I had somehow missed yall joining the road or something. XD yall all have bomb vehicles.
Those drone shots! The US has some incredibly stunning scenery.
I'd love to see a build series on an 80 series Land Cruiser
They're not cheap any more, though.
If you were able to put lockers on the Delica, it would be a lot better offroad. Maybe spacing out the wheels as well to give it a little more stability. Either way, love Delica and Sequoia content!
Yeah I think spacing out the wheels a bit more on the Delica would significantly improve its stability and depending how you did the spacing, you could add some cool custom fenders. Part of why the Jeep is so stable is because it has a wide wheel base from the driver to passenger side relative to the height of the vehicle. However I bet you would have to do some major Fabium stuff to get the wheels to stick out more on either side to make the vehicle stable while also still making it possible to open the sliding side door without it contacting the wheel somehow. A benefit of putting additionally ruggedized fenders on the side with the bigger spaced wheels could also be more storage on top of the fenders which would also lower the center of mass I think.
4x4 in Australia is hugely popular these days with insane off-road tracks. Most people drive land cruisers and Nissan patrols, but we do also have a lot of AWD cars that have done all the tough tracks.
Subaru foresters/outback’s are one of the more popular ones, with a lift kit, bash plate and rear locker they can go pretty much anywhere. In comfort, easy to park and have great fuel economy.
7:41 self driving sequoia. THE FUTURE
Self crashing sequoia
You need to put some diff lockers on the sequoia
A 4x4 ambulance build would be sweet haha. The delica is super cool and unique though, maybe you could do a “Baja” style build by widening it a little with bulged out fenders and add a bit more power. That way it’s not tipsy or sketchy to take off-road lol. Plus a “Baja” delica would be really awesome
Dude i love when you mix it up with these overlanding videos because a guy likes to have a street car and a trail rig
From personal experience with my old 05 Subaru outback they handle like a dream I drove through 6inches of mud and hardly could tell
great ! loved the drone shots of beautiful scenes and the music you used !!!
Loved the video. Definitely my kind of fun with friends. Thanks! When we go camping off trails (if no space in a truck bed is available). We would usually do one of two things with fire wood on a game rack. Bundle it with twine in 3 places per bundle. Or, what we eventually did was get containers that we could stack in easily to pack with wood (think rubbermaidtubs). Another option that works is get netting bungee cords that fit the rack as well. Not my favorite method to be honest. It does work.
Caleb,
Sell the Delica and do a AWD van build. They have some older vans with AWD that I think would be perfect for the channel! Your skills have improved and a new build would allow some new content.
You're right, the Delica has reached it's limits.
Be well
-Shane
Looked super fun! Regardless of the mods, I think keeping the Delica around won't be regretted.🏁
A nice chill overlanding video are the best.
That Baja is having a blast 😏
That Baja though 👍
And the Toyota is also looking really sharp 👌
I had to do a lot searching to find your dogs, BUT! Some months back, I did find the video. Anyway, me and a buddy camped for FD Utah, the first meal we had was the Gingium dogs. They are certified bussin'.
Nice one. A beautiful time of year too! Cheers. Need to learn how to start a campfire tho!! lol
Love love love your overloading vids. I've got young kids, so I can't do this. If I were younger, holy crap id be doing this more often.
Love a good Toyota SUV overlanding! One note, it is always best to burn firewood found in the area you're camping in as to avoid bringing in any unwanted species of bugs, seeds, etc. Campsites and parks near me check to ensure you haven't.
The Toyota is ur best bet for ur Colorado adventure, its simple, adding too much like the Delica is like boat anchor. With Sequoia is to build a small 8x4 or 6x4 trailer thats offroad able. , but its amazing to do Overlanding.
True that. 👌
This trip looks fun af, love the camping
Love to see more videos like this 👍
gotta get some locking diffs on your cars bud that is what id think the next upgrade would be
Whether or not you keep the Delica depends on how many of these overlanding camping trips you have in mind in future, I think. You could beef up the Delica to make it a little better and more reliable off-road, but I worry immediate parts availability might be a concern if it breaks down mid-trip far from home or civilization. The way I see it, the Delica is a miniaturized, slightly more off-road-capable Sprinter van. Overall great video and kudos for showing off each of the four vehicles in a positive overlanding light.
Had a Delica L400 for years, Bloody loved it.
Hate to say it after you already did all the work to the Delica, but I thinking building up the Sequoia would be cool
I don't know which videos are your best but I love this type of videos
i love these type of videos
As a jeep owner I can say without a doubt the Subaru is the best budget rig. I've seen those things take some abuse.
Knew a guy who took his Baja over a frozen, plowed field at 80mph
From my experience, they can handle much, but their greatest enemy is rust. Keep on top of that and the rest is pretty much just normal maintenance, plus some extra if youre abusing the car ofc.
Absolutely phenomenal video! I just finished a trail run at Flagpole Knob and Union Springs in Virginia. As well as some lighter trails at Green Ridge mountain. But it was nice to see some professionally shot videos for a change instead of shaky phone footage lol. I'm a Toyota enthusiast so this may sound biased. But I definitely think the Sequoia in your case is the best all round vehicle for overlanding/offroading. Reliable, spacious, capable, and a big ole v8 in the case of the Sequoia. The Jeep is strictly the best offroader. But in terms of overlanding not so much. Not exactly reliable, but way more capable offroad than Sequoias and 4Runners. The Delica is a phenomenal camper, and it'd be sad to see it leave. I'd love to still see it in your possession. Maybe just refine some features. Like the awning mount. Maybe add some diff lockers if you need em. But otherwise absolutely great video Caleb. Keep it up!!!
Wow its so beautiful!
Good stuff man. Love the Volvo vids too! Would love to see a 80 series Land Cruiser on the channel at some point.
Seeing these overlanding videos makes me want to find some similar light trails and take one of my vans out. But then the question becomes which to take.... One is rwd and open diff, so it might struggle; plus it doesn't have AC right now. The other is awd, but its also in 10x better shape and worth a lot more. And while neither have been modded, the rwd van's middle and third rows fold into an excellent bed. Even just camping would be fun I think.
money in the Sequoia would potentially be a better option. but the Delica sure would bring more attention. i'm worried about breaking down on trail and needing a parts that needs to be imported to repair, leaving the vehicle stranded longer. to help with role over you could try and make it wider and add locker in the diffs so climbing uneven terrain could go smoother
The Delica is so unique and cool, it looks so cute by how small looking it is and I am always quite hyped to see its capabilities, you could also do some engine and suspension upgrades to see if it improves some how. I have seen some Delicas in Portugal but they look quite bigger than the one you have, maybe they would work better for you I don't know if you guys have them in the states.
I don't know. The delica is unique. Maybe put lockers in it and give it a bit more power. It doesn't look like it needs any more height. I'd say keep it.
I really love the Delica and it’s purpose, but maybe in the future I think doing a full off-road build with the Sequoia would be great, custom suspension, front solid axle and all the travel for trails. Maybe even doing a diesel swap for towing and torque, even though the stock engine is great and super reliable. I have an 01 tundra and I love it, but maybe a diesel for better towing and fuel economy could be great for a build like this.
Don't drive with your hubs locked, increases wear and tear on the front diff.
delica is cool but i would say sell it and convert a used delivery(high roof) van into the perfect mini camper. lots of them in the UK. would be cool to see what you do with the space!
Thoughts on CRVs? I used to have a first gen and thinking about getting a 2nd gen. K24 powered.
I love the style of the delica, and would love to have one, but it's sooooo top heavy that I would be scared shitless, especially after my accident, I would rather have a Samerai or Patrol or anything of the style if going offroad, if only camping, I would rather have a ready to go van
Sick convoy
This man in the Baja.
Great ethos Caleb....Delica all the way...,its one of the stars of your channel in my opinion...
Couple of thoughts: the Delica is unique, it sounds like a tractor and it’s comfy. On the other hand, a truck with a camper cover or a rooftop tent would be pretty comfy and more capable off road. Most trucks have a massive aftermarket too so parts are cheap and easy. For example, I’ve got a 98 GMC K1500 and I use it to go over very similar roads to get to fishing spots. It’s stock and it does just fine. The biggest thing is that I’d prefer not to worry if the vehicle can actually get me to the dirt roads before trying to figure out camping and off-roading abilities.
Oh and you’re in the south now, it’s pronounced Appa-latch-un 😂
I think you're better off using a different platform but I do think the delica is an amazing lil van, love what you did to it
Gingium I would sell the Delica and use the money to upgrade the sequoia just needs a front and rear locker and a winch just to get yourself out of a pickle has room for a roof top tent and convert the rear to a ktchen or build an overlanding trailer I would enjoy a build series on the Sequoia
100% the Baja, I got an outback from the same Era and I LOVE those things
Delica for me ...,its been a trooper as long as you've owned it....x💪
Uniqueness & versatility alone dictate that the Delica is a keeper!!😉🍻
Coming from a Colorado native. The delica would struggle on a decent amount trails out here. Like anywhere else we have easier trails. But usually the ones worth going on have a decent amount of technicality that may not be suited for the delica.
I’ve been watching sense this channel was a Forza channel, it’s amazing how far you’ve came
Got to drive in Georgia NC and Tennesse 3 weeks ago and even drive the tail of the dragon!
I’d keep the Delica, it’s a brilliant and capable camper van that’s decent off-roading and a good weekend cruiser. Plus it’s built up how you’d want it and suits the purpose intended. (With the issue you stated, I would check the front axles as well as the differential)
The Sequoia is a good SUV for off-roading but it wouldn’t be that great on gas (due to the weight of the vehicle itself, excluding towing and interior cargo, and the gas engine under the hood) for long haul road trips though I’m sure it could be done and it does leave room for further modifications.
Ideally what I would see as the best of both worlds (off-roading, towing) and perhaps getting decent mileage depending on the drive would be a Ford Excursion SUV, the diesel variant to be specific. 4x4 capability, a Diesel engine, and a whole lot of space to work with, the excursion would seem to be a good fit and since it shares base components with a Ford super-duty truck; it does leave ample room for modifications. (This is simply my point of view)
This is awesome
The sequoia might be needing an engine soon if your previous vids about it are any indication. I know you got the check engine light to stay off but for how long? My opinion is that the sensible thing to do would be to sell the delica and then fix everything wrong with the Sequoia and use that. I have doubts that it would ever be as cool of a camper as the delica is, but it'll be far more reliable.
The Sequoia is fine. The 4.7L doesn't like to be modified. There are plenty of forums showing that tampering with O2 sensors, intakes, and exhausts will start throwing codes, otherwise the engine is fine and they have a rare failure rate. It's not uncommon for them to reach 500k miles.
Idk about a whole engine. The v8s in those are very low stress and over built, that's why so many turn over a million miles. A refresh maybe, but unless it's been ran out of oil in its lifetime, the engine should be just fine
On the Delica. What is parts availability? Tune up/wear out parts? Lockers.... for better grip. I agree with top heavy getting heavier. Can the Sequoia adequately fill the Delica's place to your hearts content? Can something else do that? And not to throw shade on the Delica or the Sequoia.... but this video just made me want a Baja even more... as if all of the Subaru "lego" videos from MCM hadn't done enough already.
I like the fire making skills :P
As you said, the Delica is good for camping, but not a very good off roader, it's top heavy, and because of it's design, it's always going to be top heavy no matter what you do to it. The only way around that would be to not only lift it, but to widen it's stance as well as lengthen it's wheelbase. That pretty much means putting it on an entirely different chassis, which at that point makes an entirely different vehicle make sense. Now... you have an entirely different vehicle already in the Sequoia. The type of camper build in the back of the Delica is essentially a teardrop trailer, so if you built an off road teardrop trailer to pull behind the sequoia, or whatever other tow vehicle may be in the future of Gingium, then sold the Delica, I think you'd be miles ahead. Plus, alot of us, including myself, came to subscribe to you during the first iteration of the adventure bus build, and I think I speak for many of us when I say it'd be great to see a gingium teardrop trailer build. 😀
Try some seasonal roads! Usually they are just small 2 track roads big enough for 1 car. Lots up here in Michigan. I always ride around Roscommon/Higgins Lk
11:20 Bro he monching on that shit. You could tell that his toes are curling 🤣🤣🤣🤣
The Appalachian Mountain area is
Some of the most beautiful parts of the US. Great driving roads too
I was here before the bus was built youve come so far bro keep it up😅
Loved this episode but I would sell the Delica and get a Z71 Suburban 05’ or 06’. Get a slight lift some lockers maybe gears they come with 3.73’s and boom the perfect overland vehicle in my opinion.
So cool man!!!
Thank you! Had a blast on the trip
Hey, Caleb......I'm really surprised the Jeep made it after all the time its spent on your workshop lifts 🤣🤣🤣
I'd pick the Baja every day of the week and twice on Sunday.
Do you think you will do any engine modifications to the delica? I remember you saying that it had some issues, I would love to see some delica modding videos!
Or this option… I love both the Delica and the Sequoia… but I think what is more viable is to sell both vehicles and buy a good tow rig and then take a little bit of money and build a forerunner for over landing, it gets great gas mileage. There is so many different modifications you can do to them. and if you’re lucky, you could find a right hand drive forerunner… or Land Cruiser JK those are way too expensive. But I think you could have the best of both worlds if you buy a good toe rig and buy a forerunner that you can build from the ground up. plus the forerunner would be some pretty good content because it’s a vehicle that a lot of people have and they are extremely reliable. Plus they hold their value very well. Or another option for something cheaper you could buy a Isuzu trooper, very capable cheap offroadee
Make more power with the Delica👀 you're definitely going to need more power for the Rockies since you'll be on more vertical slants.
Look into ford econoline e150 and 250 vans. You can occasionally find some quigley 4x4 converted vans
the Last Costco I was at was under construction, the trail there was just like this video =P , and crazy aggressive animals all over
The Sequoia doesn’t have the Toyota tax, so if you’re on a budget that would be the best choice for an overlanding rig. They are undervalued for what they offer, I had a 2004 SR5 2wd and I now have a 2001 Limited 4wd, they’re great vehicles.
Honestly, whether you continue to invest into the Delica or sell it depends on how you feel about it. If you love it a lot, you should keep it and make cool memories with it, if you think it's not enough to do what you want to do with it, you should perhaps sell it and get something else. Basically, you gotta think ''if I were to sell this car, would I really miss it in like a year or two, or would I be having an even better time with the [next intended project overlanding vehicle]?''. For what it's worth, I do think the Delica is an extemely cool, both from the inside and out.
Get a vw t5.2 or t6 tdi 4motion transporter, small lift decent tires, diff lock - rides like a dream ;)
Keep it and mod it more its super unique!
Mhhhhhhhh 🤔
Get an awd astro! Cheap, reliable and tons of space inside. Not to mention a 4x4 swap is insanely easy. Transfer case is a direct swap
had a pristine 05 turbo baja, one of the cars I miss quite a bit actually but we are a family of 5 and they only seat 4
Great video
Do you still plan on doing Meth injection on the 4D56 motor? I have a Delica as well and would love to see a video on it being done. you can tune it to run 60-65 no big issues but the injection would likely give you a few more mph and be easier on the motor as far as generating heat...
As much as the delica has grown me it’s very limited on what you can do with it and stay safe in the process I’d sell the delica and get a hummer that would honestly be badass off-road American *AF* vehicle
You should get a Ford Excursion. Reliable, easy to work on (mostly), great for towing, tons of space, all kinds of aftermarket support, 3/4 ton chassis with front and rear solid axles. Down side is they usually aren't cheap and they defintely hurt the wallet at the pump.
That Baja so sweet
Keep the delica! I absolutely love the videos with it tbh
I don't think anything beats the Suzuki Samurai when it comes to bang for your buck, but they are starting to get up there in price
Camping and off-roading is so much fun
