The melody of "Many Dreams Ago" was written by "Rear Window's" composer, Franz Waxman, for the 1953 Paramount movie "Elephant Walk," in which Elizabeth Taylor replaced an ailing Vivien Leigh, costarring Peter Finch and Dana Andrews. There was no vocal in that movie, and this is the only time I've ever heard this gorgeous song actually SUNG. Many thanks for posting this!
@@SpectreGR Go back and listen to the 1939 recording by Artie Shaw with Helen Forrest...this is NOT Helen Forrest in 1953! This is Ella and it's NOT Artie Shaw!
It sure does sound like Ella. I looked around a bit to find that recording on Google Music & more on YTube. Can't find. The Helen Forest version w/ Artie Shaw doesn't even sound like the same song. I'd appreciate knowing as well if anyone found anything of how to get it by Ella. Gorgeous rendition.
Has anyone figured out the lyrics? There's some parts that cant be heard properly because of the noises (like the honk in one part) I wanted to ask someone to record their voice over the clean instrumentals, I've wanted to hear a "studio version" of this song ever since I first watched this movie
Hi! I've written the lyrics from ear below. I'm confident in all of the lines except for the one I've marked with an asterisk (I've added an edit with something else I found about that below), but having listened to that line and mouthed it over and over, that's as close as I can get in a way that makes sense. There might be an adverb instead of "from this sleep" but I can't figure out what, and it really sounds like "from ____". More input welcomed even if it's 10 or 20 years from now! LYRICS: Many dreams ago I dreamed many dreams Waiting for my true love to appear Though each night it seemed Someone filled my dreams *Still the pain that I shield from this sleep /[Still the --- that I [cheered] [fall asleep] [?fall’n asleep] [?follows me] [?follows near] [?ferv'rously] OR [Still the face that I kissed wasn't clear] So I let my heart sing too many sweet refrains But now just one song and just one dream remains That one song is you And at last I know you’re the one I dreamed of Many dreams ago * EDIT: An article I read suggested the lyrics in that second verse are as follows: "Though each night it seems / Someone filled my dreams / Still the face that I kissed wasn't clear" It sounds plausible, but the word doesn't sound like "kissed". Could be an artefact in the recording distorting the word, though! I agree that it would be beautiful to hear someone singing the lyrics over clean instrumentals. I suppose the lucky thing about this song being used in Elephant Walk means we know what the full song sounds like if someone wanted to rearrange it slightly (and minus the clarinet) like it was for Rear Window... I wonder if there were recordings made of the song separately during filming, or if it was performed live with the background noise as one recording for the film reel?
@@Ruhelin omg this is amazing thanks! And yeah I hope someone has a recording of this hidden somewhere and it surfaces someday. I've always wanted to hear the full song, its almost criminal it wasn't officially released with the soundtrack 😅
Beautiful! Too high pitched for Ella Fitzgerald though, I see the resemblance but the tone is slightly too high to be Ella (even in Ella's earlier music)
so beautiful

But the woman who sings this song... Do u have her name?
It could be Helen Forrest but I´m not 100% sure
Funny, there are many versions dating back from 1939. Check the78prof's RUclips channel. And yes it is Helen Forrest with the Artie Shaw Orchestra.

David Levin can you link anything you've found about this?
The woman who sings this song PLEASEEEE?!! I LOVE HER.
I want to know too!
It's Helen Forrest with the Artie Shaw Orchestra.

It does sound so much like Ella. I'm very surprised this song hasn't made it out much into the wild.
who is the singer??
Hey, do you have the carousel music that plays in the end credits?
Or if you don't, could U please upload it?

LYRICS:
Many dreams ago
I dreamed many dreams
Waiting for my true love to appear
Though each night it seemed
Someone filled my dreams
*Still the pain that I shield from this sleep /[Still the --- that I [cheered] [fall asleep] [?fall’n asleep] [?follows me] [?follows near] [?ferv'rously] OR [Still the face that I kissed wasn't clear]
So I let my heart sing too many sweet refrains
But now just one song and just one dream remains
That one song is you
And at last I know you’re the one I dreamed of
Many dreams ago
* EDIT: An article I read suggested the lyrics in that second verse are as follows: "Though each night it seems / Someone filled my dreams / Still the face that I kissed wasn't clear"

it has such a lonely sound... especially the instrumental intro
To me, it sounds a lot like Toni Arden especially at certain points. Not exactly sure who the singer is though.
