We had previously covered the detailed history of Skid Row, the link is down below. But today, we want to talk about the Skid Row Bon Jovi Feud that escalated with punches being thrown with bands both bands touring together. That’s what we’ll explore in today’s video.
Skid Row guitarist Dave Snake Sabo would grow up in New Jersey alongside Jon Bon Jovi. Both of them had aspirations of being rockstars with both of them promising to help the other one out if either of them got famous.
Skid Row, which formed in 1986 was a few years younger than Bon Jovi who had already established themselves as one of the biggest rock bands on the planet thanks to the success of their third record Slippery When Wet, which came out the same year. Skid Row would be made up of frontman Sebastian Bach, guitarist Dave Snake Sabo, bassist Rachel Bolan and drumm Rob Affuso. The band would be managed by Doc Mcghee who also managed Bon Jovi. Ahead of the band signing with Atlantic Records, Jon Bon Jovi and RItchie Sambota would own a publishing company called Underground who convinced Skid Row to sign with them. As a result the Bon Jovi pair would own a lionshare of Skid Row’s publishing. Skid Row would release their debut album, which was self titled in 1989 and it would be a massive success moving over 5 million copies thanks to singles 18 and Life, and I remember You. As part of the promotion for the album Skid Row would open for Bon Jovi as part of their New Jersey Tour the same year.
That publishing deal the band signed with Jon and Ritchie became a sour point for frontman Sebastian Bach. Bach would tell a French TV outlet "Nobody thought that we would become a big band. That happens all the time in the music industry. Jon was like, 'We'll take you on tour, but if you guys make it big,' then he gets a cut of it," Bach explained. "So I was bitter about that for awhile."
But it would be another event that created a rivalry between the groups. According to Bach’s book 18 and Life it was when Skid Row’s merchandise started to outsell the headliner that Jon took exception with him recalling in his book that he was summoned into a room by the bon jovi frontman writing "he stared me down and said the words, ‘I’ll f-ing own you.’ ” Bach would also claim that during the tail end of their tours the band’s would play pranks on one another. Ahead of Skid Row’s set in Kentukcy, Bon Jovi’s entourage soaked Bach Bach who was furious went up on stagehand slammed Bon Jovi.. Skid Row’s crew responded by throwing a carton of eggs at Bon Jovi’s crew.
It was as Skid Row walked off stage that Jon and Bon Jovi’s crew were waiting for him with Bach writing
“We saw about 60 people coming toward us,” Leading the pack was Jon Bon Jovi himself. Flanking him, side to side, was his dad and his brother Tony. Behind them was the full Bon Jovi road crew.”
Jon Bon Jovi would throw a punch at Bach, that missed. Bon Jovi’s entourage would throw back into the dressing room and throw him up against the wall
“Bon Jovi Senior pointed in my face as I was held against the wall,” Bach writes. “He said, ‘I’ll (blanking) kill you,’ or something like that.”
Bach would claim to loudersound that he received congratulatory calls from Lars Ulrich of Metallica and Axl Rose of Guns N’ Roses for his actions. But for his bandmates, it put them in a difficult position with Sabo telling Loudersound “Jon had freaked out because he thought Sebastian had called him an expletive But the whole thing was a misunderstanding, and because my singer hadn’t done anything wrong I had to defend him amid all this mud-slinging.”
Sabo for his part would also have a strained relationship with Bon Jovi for several years. It would finally be healed when the pair attended the funeral of a mutual friend.

Both Jon and Ritchie would eventually relax their rights to Skid Row’s publishing under the condition that Bach sign a gag order according to Loudersound. It was years later either in the late 2000’s or 2010’s when Sebastian Bach, who was no longer in Skid Row was touring with Guns N’ Roses and having dinner with frontman Axl Rose at a restaurant in London that he mended fences with Jon.

If I recall this story correctly, I *think* my mother went to see them on the NJ tour. She was and is to this day a huge fan of both bands. She *claimed* that during Bon Jovi’s set, Bach ran across the stage in either his drawers or completely naked (can’t recall which), which made John like visibly angry, though he didn’t address it on stage. My takeaway from her story was always like, wow, John has no sense of humor. But it makes more sense for something like that to have happened and been received poorly if the bands already hated each other.

All Bach had to do is dial back the production of shirts and they could have opened for Bon Jovi for years and aided to each other's songwriting, possibly staving the wave of grunge, think about that. Also consider this, Skid Row's bass player is the primary songwriter and hair metal's formula is guitar hero and vocalist that can carry. In Skid Row, Bach is the third most important member, thus; all his bandmates hated him in spite of his dumb ass antics. Moral of the story, if you make it in the music business, appreciate the opportunity and what you got that so many clamor for.
