Sabastian went from being a wedding singer to fronting one of the best up and coming bands and opening for Bon Jovi practically overnight. And to be fair, he was only 19 years old. I'm not making excuses, but he was young and crazy and the recognition went to his head, and despite his "pretty boy" looks, he had one of the best and most recognizable voices around. Skid Row with Sabastian will always be one of my favorite bands of that era.

During the Slave To The Grind tour with Pantera, I saw them live. I was just a kid then, all wild and stuff.
I tried jumping onto the stage when Bach was right in front of me. All of the security starts pulling me down, and they stop, turn me around, and here's this long left arm sticking down from the stage. Bach pulled me onto the stage, gave me a high five, and yelled into my ear: "Go off the middle, dude!".
I flew off the stage into the crowd.
The most intense experience of my young life up to that point.
Regardless of how much of a douche Bach can be sometimes, that was a pretty rad moment for me.

having his high caliber of singing during this time is a fair entitlement to choose what kind of song he should sing. Then when Sebastian went solo in the late 90's I caught him twice on tour once in 98' and than again in early 2000 and I thought wow I'm seeing Skid Row again. Then when I saw Skid Row open for KISS with a new lead singer I thought, what the Hell is this? This isn't Skid Row, this is the most bland band I've ever seen. Then it hit me, Sebastian Bach was the entire band. Sebastian has so much stage presence when he's performing and he treats every show like it's his last just in case it is!

They didn't refuse to open for Kiss, heck they would have had the circumstances been different,....meaning, they had just come off a long tour and they were tired and burnt out and wanted to spend some time with their families and Sebastian takes a Kiss offer tour without consulting with them first. They never said they were too big to open for Kiss, that's just what whiny Sebastian says, to bash the band that fired him. I've seen multiple interviews with Rachel and Snake and when asked that question they always reply with the tired from a long tour story and not Sebastian's lame story.

To big to open for Kiss? Skid Row? In 1996? That's actually hilarious! By 96 the world had moved from glam metal to grunge to punk and was just starting nu metal. Plus it hadn't even been 10 years since Skid Row was relevant, not long enough for those over priced nostalgia shows old rock bands like to put on. Skid Row in 96 shouldn't be passing up any paying gigs. Sorry, but that's how it goes in rock and roll!

I caught that act, in Baton Rouge. It was February 1989, second week of the tour, iirc. Skid Row were largely unknowns at the time, as "18 And Life" wouldn't hit until later in the year. "Youth Gone Wild", their first single, was current at the time. Though it is my favorite track by them, "18 And Life" was their breakthrough hit. Great show, by both acts! If I hadn't clarified, I meant that "Youth Gone Wild" is my Skid Row favorite, even though it didn't have the crossover impact that "18 And Life" did.

The part that stands out the most and literally says it all is when Nuno looks at Snake and says, arn't you going to do something, to which he doesn't do anything and flips his newspaper/magazine like "just another day at the office". It's a tough situation. Bach is a gifted singer and so uniquely identifiable with Skid Row. He would be nearly impossible to replace. The band may have been better off getting a new singer and then renaming the band, updating their sound, and image. Using the Skid Row name didn't keep them "at the top," and every album they put out, the first words out of anyone's mouth were all comparing it to Bach or talking about "How it's not Skid Row without Bach."

    • @robotube7361
      @robotube7361 Год назад +3

Yes. I think this has to do with personal pride. Sabo is extremely stubborn person. Skid row is his brainchild before Bach even joined and suddenly Back became synonimous with the band more than him. I think his pride is the downfall of the band. He hates Sebastian because he has to depend on him for success and this is probably killing him. Sabo doesnt want to admit that there is no Skid Row without Sebastian and this is the problem. Skid Row will keep on existing on the fringes of obscurity rather than Sabo comming to his senses and give teh fans what they. At this point I think he will rather disband the band than Admit his success in life is in large part due to Sebastian fronting his band lmao.

I mean, I can't say he's lying, but who puts on a graphic tee on without looking at it first, whether the content is offensive or not? I have a picture of him with the shirt in question on. I'm still amazed at their idea that Skid Row in 1996 was "too big" to open for Kiss...who had just reunited with all the original members and was about to do the biggest reunion tour in history. Skid Row in 1991 wasn't even too big to open for that. Sure as hell they weren't by 96, when nobody was listening to them anymore and they were barely putting any new material out.
Now all that said, I can definitely see why they don't want to deal with Sebastian. I saw them in 91 with GnR, they were fantastic. He's a great singer and performer, but....he's one of those dudes that don't know how to turn it off. So I can understand how they'd not want to deal with that on the road all the time. He would eventually play the titular dual character in Broadway's _Jekyll & Hyde_ and from that experience he got to meet and work with a lot of gay men and, since then, he has completely 100% changed from his earlier homophobic inclinations to being an absolute Ally. He even recently angrily responded on Twitter to a homophobic rocker (forgetting which one) and absolutely stood-up for us. So, people can change, and in the past 30 years, Sebastian Bach has changed for the better. So, we do need to give him some credit for his personal growth.

@@GregoryGuay do you mean songwriter publishing? The only way they could do that is if Skid Row agreed to that. It's odd because SR's label Atlantic would also be losers in that deal because the label would have to constantly negotiate with Jovi and Co. permission to use their own artists material in any record release or videos etc. Record companies usually that control.
Or do you mean Jovi took a big cut of Skid Row's merchandise sales - which was common in the 80's - and that is a dick move.

Bach wanted to open but his band mates thought they were to big for KISS? That doesn’t sound like a Bach problem to me, sounds like the rest of Skid Row had their own ego problem…

That's the story Bach put out in an interview.. The real story was that Skid Row was burnt out and wanted a break to be home w/ their families and regroup as they last coupe tours they lost money on and they really didn't want to get back out on the road W/ Bach again in that moment. a few years later Skid Row went out opening for Kiss with a different singer. It wasn't about being to big, it was being to burnt out to do a good job for Kiss. And Bach booked that tour behind the bands back. A tour costs money and time away from families, it's a big deal and big decision. He tried to force the band to do something he had no business doing. It wasn't his band and it wasn't his place.

While Bach's utter craziness always gets most of attention, there are all these dick moves by his bandmates too in this story. Incidents like getting angry at him for reading that letter from authorities, the "we're too big for Kiss warm-up" BS, but most importantly not letting him do more songwriting, which directly lead to band's eventual breakup.

Exactly. So they were angry with him for reading the letter? Well, why did they go along with playing the song they'd been asked not to play then?

He sounds like his own worst enemy.. My Mom and her bestfriends got to hang with him on his tour bus a couple years back. They all said he was very nice took photos with them and talked to them for awhile.
