What do you guys think of Subhuman Race? ALSO: On Friday comes the first of probably MANY videos on a band I have NEVER talked about, but had an enormous amount of request to do.
Personally my favorite.🤘
It's my favorite skid row album!
Not as bad as some people think. But not that great either. I remember enjoying a couple tracks. Haven't listened to it in ages though..
Really good album ! Sounds fresh even in 2024
The first 3 albums rule
Subhuman Race is an excellent album. A natural progression from Slave. Heavy as hell, and Bach was at the top of his game!! One of my favs albums of that era.
Sebastian Bach was a whirlwind of a frontman if there ever was one. The problem was he just never shut the f*** up! Ever!!
GQe
Also he stopped being able to sing by like 1995
@@A-Man79 bas still is a great frontman, but when he isnt singing, he says cringe things, and is not representing the best interests of those on stage. u gotta love his enthusiasm, and dedication to the music, but the other parts outweigh that for skid row.
He's an arrogant, overgrown child. Truly one of the most obnoxious singers of all time.
He also couldn't write the songs.
I think it's important to always point out that 'Slave To The Grind' was the first metal album to debut at #1
I thought that Metal Health from Quiet Riot was the first...
First Metal album OF THE SOUNDSCAN ERA is what you mean
No, he was right in saying Slave to the Grind was the first metal album to Debut at #1. Metal Health was the first to reach #1. There's a difference.
No. It is as pantera’s Far Beyond Driven
@@michaelgreisinger5255 but still it is regarded as the first in the soundscan era so nobody is wrong!
A lot of people love Subhuman Race, but I could never get into it. Slave to the Grind is such a unique, unsung album. It's like a cross between Guns N Roses and Pantera, yet still sounds unique. Wish they could have leaned into that style for one or two more records.
😂😂😂😂😂 dummy
Slave to the grind is a masterpiece.
The title track was my favorite song from them.
Sounds like you and me both! I've tried to listen to that record a few times and it just sucks. They should have definitely just stuck with the slave to the grind sound
I really like Slave to the Grind as well. The only Skid Row album that still does it for me.
I got Subhuman Race back in the 90s when it came out and it has been my favorite Skid Row album ever since.
Subhuman is a great album & I love the sound of it. Its really thick & bass heavy, no idea why they hated the sound.
"MTV used to set trends, now they follow them."
-Every band that peaked in the 90's
By the middle of the 90s MTV was more interested in producing crappy reality shows than promoting music.
@@TheRockinDonkeythat was the tail end man
@@TheRockinDonkey about 1999 to 2000s that started. Exact same time the big labels brought everything out
@@TheRockinDonkey ...with the crappy reality shows having taken over all of MTV by the 2010s and the 2020s,killing the fun and the true past intent of what MTV once was.
subhuman was an amazing record. bought it on release day from moondog records in gresham oregon. loved the sound and the songs.
I used to buy most of my stuff at Moondog! And Ozone Records downtown
@@LordTeaboBaggins music millennium, tower, and a great import place in beaverton called for what its worth!
@@patrickreeves4650 music millenniums still around thank god lol
@@LordTeaboBaggins do u have any idea when moondog closed? i moved after graduating in 1996, but when i went back in 2004 it was gone.
@@patrickreeves4650 Around 2001 I believe
Subhuman Race was Skid Row's effort to lean towards Pantera. Bach became a huge fan of Pantera after touring with them in 1992.
Subhuman Race is actually my favorite Skid Row album. But then, I wasn't really into them in their earlier days. I was more into heavier stuff. When they went heavy for that album, I was like oh ok, they actually are pretty good.
"Hey!!! Whos here to see some TRAINS!?!" 😂 love sebs cameos on tpb lol
😂. I saw Bach a few weeks ago. He sounded great, btw. I yelled that at him. He turned to me and said, "Fucking Patrick Swayze, man!!!" 😂😂😂😂
I remember the sad day, when I was in 10th grade. I put on my headphones and switched on my Walkman to KNAC and all I got was my dad’s music airing on the station. The movie Airheads reminds me of what happened to KNAC.
Skid Row was a band that just came along a little bit too late and they were unfortunately phased out during the grunge/alternative era. If their debut album had come along in 1984-1986 instead of 1989 they would have likely had a few more smash hit albums.
The grunge era was tough on all those 80's era hard tock/metal bands. Slave to the Grind is such an underrated album.
i dont agree and think thier timing in '89 was perfect. got with bon jovie and they killed it!!
Slave To The Grind was actually an immediate Number One charting album, for if you want to toss in an actual underrated Skid Row album that would actually be Subhuman Race and their recent album The Gang's All Here(which was derailed by Erik Gromwall's terminal illness).
@@stevenmillan9220I know Grind did well with sales I just think it's a high quality record that is rarely discussed outside of Skid Row fans.
Ironically, “Hair Metal” is making a comeback while Grunge just died a quick and lonely death.
Ironically the grunge thing fizzled out even faster than hair metal.
Subhuman Race is their best album with heavier riffs and without that guitar distortion that every 80s band had. Sebastian's screams are sick on this one.
I saw Skid Row when they opened for G 'n' R on their Use Your Illusion Tour and they (Skid Row) were on point! Alpine Valley is a great venue too and camping out after Ozzfest '99 was sooooo amazing! The acid tabs and trays of brownies made it extra amazing! 😂
Last time I went to Alpine (~2006) they no longer allowed camping :(.. It was very hard to attempt to drive off the lot while the steering wheel was melthing, lol.
I was at that show too! I remember Sebastian saying, at the end of their set, “I’m gonna go backstage smoke some weed and watch me some Guns n Roses!” 😂
I was there and it was a dream come true of a show! We rushed the stage when Skid Row came on then couldn’t leave our seats during the freaking 2 hours it took GnR to come out but otherwise it was a time.
@@jameza6129yep and he watched them from the left side of the stage trying to be in the shadows but stuck out like a sore thumb.
One more comment; I’ve always liked this channel and I’m happy you’re still going strong 🤙🏻✌🏻
I appreciate that!
KNAC 105.5 FM didn't change their format in 1995. It went off the air February 15, 1995 at 1:59 pm. The 105.5 frequency became Que Buena KBUE. It was a sad day in Southern California metal history for sure losing Pure Rock 105.5 KNAC.
That’s what spin reported in 1996
My Enemy, Firesign,Eileen,Into Another and Breaking Down
are strong songs !
Exactly. Those are great. Basically half the album is great.
@@jonasandersson3684 Agreed. The problem is... the other half is dog crap, which dragged the whole thing down
@@allicide166 really? I love literally every single song on the album lol. Just like I love every single song on STTG. I can't say the same about their debut record, I only like 5 songs off there, the others are cheesy 80's glam metal type generic stuff. I can literally tell a personal story about every single track off Subhuman Race. Every track is unique af. Even the off character stuff like Bonehead and Subhuman Race itself - which sounds like Pantera meets Slayer meets Sex Pistols on crack. Love that shit.
@@PepGuardiola777 Unique doesn't necessarily mean good, but I get your point. But everyone has their own preferences, so good on ya.
Eileen is so great!
It's neat that time has told us there's a market for just about every style of music.
Many thanks Rock and Roll True Stories 🤘🤘🤘
Much appreciated!
Still hard to believe Skidrow toured with PanterA and the latter was the opener. Sebastian was prob like how tf do we follow that! 😂
I saw this tour in Toledo OH. Pantera soaked up all the crowds energy.
Sebastian was best friends with the guys in pantera and knew them from back in their glam days, before cowboys. They jammed together on stage a lot
I caught that tour twice. Both bands were great.
@sharingansasuke5 ok I never knew that. Makes so much more sense now
I worked that tour and it was obvious the division in the crowd. They were booking 5k+ Theaters and a good number of people would disappear after Pantera finished their set. Pantera was known for sneaking out into the main lobby of a venue to hang out with fans, so that's where the hard core fans went.
I think the first Bob Rock record to feature that terrible St. Anger snare sound is the self-titled album by The Cult from 1994.
They rocked hard. And partied harder! Rock N Roll baby!!!!
problem was bands like skid row made 90s style grunge videos it came off as them following the trends trying to fit in
But was that their choice or the labels? Most bands didnt even get to pick what songs got vids
@@plisskenationbackfromthede3657 it was no win situation for them they couldnt make 80s style video and when they made 90s style video they got called posers
Plus skid row sucked
@@bb-gc2txthey were called posers in the 80s
Guns and posers ring a bell 🛎️?
Skid row was a joke too
All of them were
Poison
Faster pussycat
Skid row
And many more 😊
@@Chadsolderbrotherbrad1111 Guns "N Roses has been on a lengthy reunion tour that seems to last forever and not afford them anytime to record a new album, which would likely become their final album if they find the time to record it(given that they're not getting any younger and both the music generation and the music genre has all completely changed since their lengthy absense).
I personally thought Subhuman Race was a killer album. Eileen is an absolutely killer track - Baz kills it on the outro of that song
Saw them live on every tour but mostly remember when Soundgarden opening for Skid Row in like 93. That was weird but kick ass to see in a pretty small venue.
Love Subhuman Race. The song Breakin Down is awesome and was in the closing credits for one of the Prophecy film Trilogy starring Christopher Walken
I love your videos man. This channel is really cool.
Thank you! Much appreciated!
I remember when it came out in 1995. A friend got it and I listened to it at his house over the weekend. It was alternative and not the Skid Row I knew.
Don’t get me started on sUBHUMAN rACE. It’s their BEST album song for song, but let’s face it, it was released 2 years too late. And why INTO ANOTHER wasn’t released as a single still makes me seethe to this day.
You nailed it. That album eclipses first two. I listen to it all the time. Not a bad song.
umm yea Wizard @ GachaMetal is freakin’ obsessed with this album. Said it was the #1 greatest hair band album of all time. That’s a BOLD statement. It’s a great hard rock album but not even Skid Row’s best.
That album was great!
It was showing transition from the 80s into 90s genre.
Love your videos dude. Always look forward to when you drop new content. Thanks for sharing your craft and love of music. The world would be a sad place without music. Much love from new zealand 🤘
Thanks so much! Video on Friday and Wednesday next week are two bands I’ve gotten a TON of requests for but never covered
Subhuman is a great record. It took me years to listen to it.
Thank you for the post! ✌🏼😊
KNAC was bought and the new owner changed the format from hard rock/metal. I was back in LA and just happened to tune in the station and as they played Fade to Black by Metallica for the last time.
I think 'Subhuman Race' is their BEST Album 💯🔥
I love the Subhuman Race album. It's an awesome record. Breaking Down, Eileen, Into Another are great songs!
Fun fact: Bach's actual last name is Bierk. His father David was a prominent visual artist here in Canada and painted the cover of 'Slave to the Grind.'
@@christophermerlot3366 I saw a special on that it was really cool. That would be a dream come true for a father to have your own son gain you the notoriety that you couldn’t gain on your own. At least on the level he was able to for his own pops. It’s cool the other band members were ok with it as well. I enjoyed the heck out of that part!
Iron Will and Beat Yourself Blind from that record are still on my favorite song playlist to this day. You could tell this was an album by a band in the midst of imploding though.
I saw that tour when skid row opened for Van halen. Skid row killed it. I also saw Sebastian Bach solo a couple of years ago and they killed it. I also saw a little earlier this year with their new singer and they killed it. Sebastian doesn't need skid row and skid row doesn't need Sebastian.
Skid Row need Baz and the fans need them to make up.
My favorite from their first three albums with "Medicine Jar" and "Iron Will" in my top five Skid Row songs ever. I always thought it was better to listen from the bottom to the top as the better songs IMO are on the bottom half of the record. Yeah, it has that St. Anger vibe to it...dirty and angry which is another reason I like it along with St. Anger.
The debut album was great but slave to the grind could be a genre of its own.. it's amazing how much of an impact this album has, even after so many years it's still relevant. It's sad that some artists are self destructive
Skid row members I bet are regretting not doing that kiss reunion tour
it's literally their best album
Skid Row never released a bad album with Sebastian. I like Subhuman Race.
Can you say the same post Baz?
Subhuman race is my favorite album every song I enjoy
Subhuman Race did NOT suck. I revisit that album just as much as Slave To the Grind.
Subhuman is an underrated banger…
Bar was set pretty high with those first 2 albums ! I can’t name any band ever that put out 3 legendary albums in a row ! Hell 2 in a row is brutal !
VH1&2
Boston debut & Dont look back
Tesla Mechanical & Great Radio
Doesn’t happen very often !
I attended a Skid Row show around 1996 right before the band fell apart. It was a 3,000 person capacity building with maybe 300 people in the building including road crew & security people. I felt disappointed with the sparse turnout but the band still delivered a killer set , even with the obvious tension within the band. I hated grunge & alternative for ruining all my favorite bands back then.
MTV kept teasing the band on this one with each video, saying they would play it but then never actually doing so. Maybe their approach with Cinderella was a bit kinder in retrospect, flat-out telling them from the get-go "Don't bother making a video. We won't play it."
I didn't love Subhuman at first, but it grew on me eventually and nowadays i love it! it WAS a very different sound and it sounded horrible on my truck but ok on my home stereo. BUT it's a great album!
So i wholeheartedly agree with another comment below. First off like what was said in the interview, Snake refers to himself as a songwriter that has polished what he does. Well a good song can be written, it takes a great singer to make that song what it is. They wanted to be famous and they got that way because of Bachs vocal abilities and look. Plain and simple
They would have never have made it during that time with anyone else singing those songs. And yes what Bach did was wrong, insulting some of them. Its a band, your a family, its going to happen. Yet all the others (Bolan, Snake, Hill) they all hold this ridiculous grudge against Bach. Again not saying what he might have done was right, but sorry lets face the elephant. Bach put Skid Row on the map, and the only reason people go to see them now, is because they know what the songs sound like and like them. Not so much the players.
Skid Row live on their first tour was amazing. They couldn’t get that energy back. Sebastian is a front man & of course he gets more attention - It did go to his head a bit. Even now he still is arrogant 😂
Subhuman is an incredible album. My only complaint is the long silence for four minutes at the end of the killer “Iron Will”, it fucks up the flow on the mix compilations.
Iron Will is the last track on the album. A little over two minutes pass before a short, eerie sounding instrumental/vocal combination of different songs from the album is played.
As i remember the story about how Bon Jovi and S.B. met through JBJ dad heard S.B. singing at a wedding had his son John listen to him after hearing how good he was. They fell out over merchandise being sold at concerts and it seemed like JBJ n S.B. ended up hating each other it almost came down to a fist fight with JBJ and his dad went after S.B. but he was always a weirdo as i remember him always bitching about something but he was stunning in his 1st album but every year after not so much especially any more!!!!
Subhuman Race, in my opinion, is a great album. The next album, 40 seasons, featured a live recording of "Beat Yourself Blind" which was on Subhuman as a studio recording.
That live track is one of the greatest examples of how incredible Bach's voice was. The song "Wasted Time" on Slave to the Grind is another example. Skid Row would not
have been the same without him. Nor were they ever again after he left. If it weren't for the fact that Bach loves to share his political beliefs, which are disappointing to say
the least, I would say he was one of my favorite vocalists of all time but I'm funny about things like that. If you are a douche off the stage it's hard for me to enjoy your work.
I still listen to all of their albums on a regular though.
The whole KISS angle at the end is ironic considering Ozone Monday (Skid Row sans Bach) opened for them.
i rocked subhuman race with no apologies. 'breakin' down' is fkn epic
I think the best part of this channel is NO AI NARRATION!
the fact he takes the time and effort to do the narrative rather than use the morgan freeman AI that Is in every second video is so refreshing.
I thought the album started strong with the first 4 songs, then it began to drag starting with Eileen. It picks up again with Face Against My Soul and ended with a bang with Ironwill.
I know hindsight is always 20/20, but perhaps Skid Row could have fit in better with Bush, Live and Hole if they had simply gone by the name “Skid”.
If only Mutt Lang got a hold of Sebastian Bach first! The Charismatic Voice has been reviewing his voice recently, and she has been blown away (as I was when he came on the scene).
The mix sounds good to me
I bought subhuman race with no issues in 1995.
He was at a cookout at my friend's house last summer.
Tough to follow up a phenomenal record like Slave to the Grind, regardless of the change in musical trends. That said, Subhuman Race was a pretty good record.
Skid row rule !😊😊😊😊
I absolutely love that album. Crazy.
Too big to open for KISS on the ‘96 reunion???? 😂😂😂 That’s rich.
I don't know why Bas and the members of Skid Row don't like this album because it's a killer album. I like it. There are some damn good songs on it like 'frozen', 'Firesign', 'Into Another.' My favorite has to be the haunting 'Eileen.' There are a couple of songs though, that could have been left off the album like 'Bonehead' and 'Beat Yourself Blind.' That song is just stupid. It's too bad Subhuman Race would be the final album with Bas. To me, and a lot of other people, there is no Skid Row without him.🤘🏻
One of the best hair metal albums to come out in the nineties when the scene was changing was Warrants Dog Eat Dog.
Skid Row was such a great band
Not a fan of this style of music but i always enjoy your style of reporting so i watch nonetheless.I do t have a problem with skid row or others in this style but just not my jam so all the best for them as theres always room for more music in this world
Thanks! Friday is a band I’ve never covered with a ton of requests
Knowing ALL the guys in Skid Row were huge KISS fans I doubt that opening for them was a bad thing....I saw Skid Row open for KISS on the 2000 Farewell Tour with Johnny Sollinger (RIP) on vocals.....
It's so cringy to see the 80's rock bands try to survive in the 90's by changing their sound and style. I LOVE 80's rock but when you see interviews with Poison or Motley they're like "Yeah, we wanted to strip down our sound and get back to basics." and of course the
" Yeah, we're playing smaller venues like clubs to reconnect with our fans.... No pyro or anything. Just us and the fans".
And the BIG one....
"Our influences have always been punk.... You know, SEX PISTOLS, THE RAMONES, BOWIE." Where before they were saying bands like KISS, AEROSMITH, VAN HALEN.
Riiiight....
"Not us! We're bringing all our pyrotechnics to every show!"
Great White 2003
I really like subhuman race a lot. I thought it was super underrated. Definitely a different kind of album, but still really good
Yes ST ANGER snare sound on SUBHUMAN RACE
There are some killer tracks on Subhuman Race. I still like that album.
5:46 “ass-bury park” lol
You mean to tell me that full grown men can't figure this shit out and give the fans what they want want?? It's for the fans!!! Have they forgotten that??
My goodness, could you have found a worst picture of Sebastian for the video thumbnail? I mean... it could had been a better picture.
Right,?? As hot as he was .come on
I like Subhuman Race. There is some good stuff on there. .. Unfrozen and Eileen are the first tunes that come to mind.
Subhuman Race was a good f*ckin album!
Sebastian's Aids shirt was classic.
His non-apology on MTV was hilarious, too.
That's when he wasn't a commie. Now, he's a typical sheep
Lmao 🤣
I'd love to see a video about Only Living Witness.
It may not be as awesome as their first two albums but Subhuman Race boasts of some good songs like My Enemy, Beat Yourself Blind, Frozen, Face Against My Soul, and Medicine Jar to name a few.
That album is great. Go back n listen
I thought this was their best album. I still blast it at the gym.🤘
Yeah I do like a number of songs off it
I love subhuman race
I love Subhuman Race I think its a killer album.
What is the background song?
It is pretty lame they didn''t want to open for Kiss except Bach, I'd be pissed too. That tour was huge
subhuman race is a great album. i still give it spins.
I actually love subhuman race. It was DEFINITELY their hardest album. I think they picked the wrong single and the grunge thing did not help
Why did you put a 1000 year old banshee in the thumbnail?
😁🤣
Even now, Sebastian’s face brings in the views 😉 he was always the big draw for skid row
Love that album.
I've always loved Subhuman Race.
Subhuman Race is an underrated record. I applaud the band's attempt to try something different. Not their best, but it definitely has some great songs. PLAY LOUD
