This episode is almost like a g-rated slasher movie. A mad killer is on the loose trying to kill teenagers but since this is Scooby-Doo no one actually dies.
I'd take a bullet for that dog.
Ghost Clown always creeped me out. Not because he was a clown, but because he was one of the only Scooby villains that was a legit and compelling threat to the gang, using his hypnosis to manipulate and distract them. Granted, since this was a kid's show, the situations he put them in were pretty tame, but imagine if this was used in real life. He could've easily used his skills to put the gang in actual danger, and its those capabilities that help make Ghost Clown a more compelling villain that most.
@@sdm47 Sorry I hadn't watched this episode in FOREVER so I forgot about that scene. The main one that would come to mind was what happened to Daphne.
Real life Joker.
The puppet master in Backstage Rage tried to hurt the gang too, plus the Snow Ghost tried to straight up murder Velma with a saw
@@jongon0848 He was one of the first villains that my childhood memories would recall posing a threat to the gang, but looking back on the episodes recently I realized just how many murderous villains there actually were. Like yeah how could I forget about the Snow Ghost's attempt to saw Velma in half? (And I never saw Backstage Rage, that was a new one for me).
Making an inexperienced coward tame a hungry lion is tame?
Honestly the plot of the episode could work as a 80s slasher movie.
Being a kids show theres something you don't notice. But as an adult there is an oddity. Scooby gets hypnotized. He's a dog no change. Shaggy gets hypnotized. The Ghost Clown puts a pith helmet on him and keeps him in his regular clothes. Daphne gets hypnotized. TH Ghost Clown makes her change her whole outfit. Uhm Harry just what were you doing during this time?
taking photos
Wow the villain was a forerunner to the whole evil clown we've grown so accustomed to in the years following.
Yea you never see clowns as something positive anymore.
They are always supposed to be evil and scary nowadays.
Imagine if Mystery Inc. actually faced Pennywise though...oh right, they technically did already...twice. 😆
How??
@@joegooch6894 Glad you asked! They didn't really, it's just a joke referencing the fact that the og Pennywise, Tim Curry, made two separate appearances in this franchise. So yeah, just a funny connection is all. 😊
@@DJtheBlack-RibbonedRose One was Ben Ravencroft, but what's the other one? Or are you talking about The Mastermind in the game Scooby Doo: Night of 100 Frights? Great game btw
@@djcogdill9263 Apologies for the late reply, for some reason I wasn't notified. I'd heard of N1F through my Original Mysteries VHS, but I had no idea Tim voiced the Mastermind until recently, so that actually marks THREE appearances by him in the Scooby-verse. The third one being Scooby-Doo & the Goblin King from 2008...he was the sub-titular Goblin King, as well as the werewolf caretaker. 🧙♂️🐺
Glad I see these back. Seeing Cyd's analysis always brings me more appreciation for Scooby.
Like, this is a Scooby slasher film. Who knew?!
Thank you Cyd , this is either my favorite or most memorable Scooby episode. I liked when the clown says "watch the pretty coin of gold and you will do as you are told" Maybe because it reminds me of my other favorite show Bewitched and the incantations they used. :-)
Ghost Clown didn't try to hypnotize Velma for a very obvious reason - hypnosis would have not worked on her due to her wearing glasses. For hypnosis to work, the object used for it has to have direct contact with the eyes of the person being hypnotized. Velma's glasses would prevent her from being hypnotized.
The clown himself never freaked me out it was more his voice.
Edit: One of the only other few episodes where Scooby did anything without the need for a Scooby Snack.
Universal fear of clowns been around for generations lol
“Now I’m going to do what clowns do best ……kill”
-Krusty the Clown
This is one of my fave Scooby-Doo episodes. Makes me think of something R.L. Stine would write for Goosebumps
Yaaay I've really missed these
Me too. I want more. More. MOOOOOOORE!!!!!
Harry the Hypnotist (aka the Ghost Clown) was one of the most dangerous villains in the old series, and I respect it.
Great review, Doc. This episode always unnerved me, especially after you explained the hideous possible motive. As for why Fred and Velma were left unhypnotized, Velma would probably never let herself get trapped in that way. Fred, I am not sure, maybe they thought it would be too mean-spirited seeing "the smart guy" taken down several pegs? Also, the coin-based eye-fixation technique the Ghost Clown does only works on around fourteen percent of people, intelligent or otherwise.
It’s back!!!!
Can you do Planet Terror review tomorrow!
i've been rewatching the eps along and now by ep 13. its so crazy how different the dynamics are. shaggy is more proactive, velma is on point with observations, daphne brings clues every so often and fred is sometimes gone for the longest while.
The Ghost Clown was always my favorite villain as a kid!
It's so cool that you are reviewing these cartoons! Scooby is my boy, I'm glad that I got to share these cartoons with my daughter. Her first backpack for school, was Scooby.
Ironically, people with higher intelligence are easier to hypothesize.
Agreed, they are easier, since they have good imaginations, creativity, and typically follow directions well, speaking from practical, non-malicious, experience.
This episode was one of the few that scared me as a kid, along with What the Hex. And I think the reason was the hypnosis aspect present in both (even though it was only used for a minute or so in Hex). After those two episodes, I remember hypnosis terrifying child me. It doesn't really anymore, but yeah, it had a pretty big impact on my childhood fears.
I wonder if the ghost clown watched Daphne changing from her regular clothes into that circus dress.
One of the many things that got my attention in this episode was that Shaggy names the lion that he was trying to tame Simba. Decades before Disney's the Lion King was released.
Simba is a Swahili word for Lion. it's a big part of how Disney won their lawsuit against the creator of Kimba the White Lion, you know besides all that fuck you money they have.
@@nothanks7263 In Disney’s defense, despite being called Leo in the original Japanese, Kimba is a misname for Kimball, because the title character is a male, but the name he got in the English dub was feminine; it’s like with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, where the Shredder’s real name is Oroku Saki (feminine Japanese name), rather than Oroku Sawaki (masculine Japanese name).
It's been ages since I've seen one of these
Can't wait for spooky space kook
With all the crappy things that been happening to u, it's good to see u back. Hope your doing well.
What has been happening to him?
Peyton his house flooded and I don’t know what else.
This was one of my favourite episodes as a kid. So creepy but then again......clowns 😂
Good to see you back
As a kid, this was my favorite episode of Scooby-Doo! This was actually the first Clown that I was afraid of! Yes! I'm serious! Yep, before I saw Tim Curry as Pennywise the Clown, there was Ghost Clown from Scooby-Doo! He scared the shit outta me! And I loved him for that! And as Cyd mentioned, this was the first Scooby-Doo villain that actually tried to kill the gang, which made it even scarier for me! I feared for their lives whenever the clown appeared! The clowns evil yellow eyes, his make up, his voice, everything about him, made him so terrifying! After all these years, is it still my favorite episode of the show? Well, no. It's now at the number 2 spot. When Cyd gets to my number 1 favorite episode, I'm gonna go crazy! Good review man! Glad to see you back with the Scooby-Doo Where Are You videos!
I'm not surprised GC freaked you out more so than Pennywise did. This guy was explicitly evil, while Pennywise originally just came off as a regular guy hanging out in the sewer trying to make conversation before revealing his true colors. Speaking of which, are you familiar with the roles Tim Curry play in this franchise? ;)
@@DJtheBlack-RibbonedRose I know he plays Ravencroft and the Goblin King. Was there one role I missed?
5:04 I have to go now my planet needs me. Note the ghost clown died on his way back to his home planet.
First time I saw this episode was a rerun on Boomerang back in 2010 or so and I was surprised by how dark it was.
Rewatching this episode it makes me wonder HOW the Ghost Clown got Daphne into that outfit. Did she change by herself or did he put her in the outfit?
I didn't really care for this episode as a kid, but as I got older and realized the actual implications of the plot, it became one of my favorites. While I still think Charlie the Robot was the first villain to put the gang in actual danger due to his incredible strength and unpredictability due to his malfunction, the Ghost Clown was the first villain to willingly.
The idea of the villain hypnotizing the gang so they try to get themselves killed by performing dangerous circus acts is actually a pretty dark idea, especially for early Scooby-Doo. However I think the Ghost Clown could have had more of a backstory. Maybe he could have been a clown who died in some sort of accident, like a trapeze accident, or lion taming accident. Why would a clown be doing either of those? I don't know. You probably could think of something. A unique gimmick to that circus maybe. I just think being a simple superstition just kind of makes his presence feel arbitrary. But his plan and creepy hypnosis ability more than makes up for that.
Agreed as a kid I never cared for it but as a adult the implications is crazy of him trying to kill the gang.
1:48 "The Ghost Clown is the first terrifying villain with a supernatural ability"
What about the Ghost of Elias Kingston no who had the supernatural power of turning people old??
Yesssss I needed some Scooby Doo today
The Ghost Clown always creeped me out with that look in his eyes and his soft voice. He always looked like he was thinking about doing the most horrible things. And it doesn’t help that nowadays he reminds me of John Wayne Gacy for that extra bit of disturbing factor.
This may have been the very first image of a actual scary clown being this was back in 1969
I actually wonder why the gang just don't beat the crap out of the villains of the show
Trunks Vegeta Briefs have there been other instances where the gang beat the shit out of a villain
I wonder if someone use this type of premise of killing people in a slasher movie
Maybe not in slashers, but it showed up in "Columbo" and "Hawaii Five-O."
I can't recall the last time hypnotism was in use in mainstream media.
I knew this ep. was deep but i never could’ve imagined
Most excellent review, as always.
Congratulations on 100k Wolfula!!!
Congrats on 100k! Cant wait to see 200 then on to 1mill
Funny I’m watching mystery incorporated right now lmao
Been looking forward to this!
I thought I was a big fan of your Doctor, but how have I missed these lovely scooby reviews?!? I’ve failed you!! Anywhoo this is my favorite episode of the show. And you’ve elevated it with your Analysis. Never thought of it that way. That clown was a frigging psychopath. My god if that’s the case then what does this episode being my favorite from childhood say about me!
For some, it was Tim Curry's Pennywise.. for me, it was Ghost Clown that made me side eye clowns xD
It wasn't just his look, but it was also his laugh; he was one of the first villains I watched that every time he showed up, I'd get a bit more unnerved (granted, I was.. 6 or 7 when I watched this)
May have to rewatch this one. Love these reviews! keep them coming!
That clown reminds me of pennywise the clown from it. 😀👍
Makes it all the more funnier since Tim Curry (the original Pennywise) has appeared in this franchise before...twice. XD
I'm so happy these are back. Cant wait for Goosebumps Gooseday!
Glad to see you back and in action..
This was really cool episode
It makes me wonder if the reflection off Velma’s glasses would’ve acted as a mirror as well if he had tried to hypnotize her?
The Ghost Clown literally made Daphne change into an outfit offscreen he could’ve allegedly raped Daphne the sick clown…
blast from past! haven't seen this episode since I was a baby.
Did Harry watch Daphne change?
I hope you you have plans for more universal classic monsters reviews for next June.
Hell o' dr. Wolfulass !
You remember Lamberto bava " the Church " or Lucio Fulci " the horror of nurnberg Castel " !
100 % you must high recension for variously motivation ...
Bye dottor...salute !
✌😊💛🥎🍩📎
My god... Velma spoke to Daphne!!! She must be gay... I mean it's not like anyone needs to wait 50 odd years to have it confirmed retro actively.... We're not that dumb.... It's just so obvious... isn't it???
Velma at one point is almost hypnotized by the Ghost clown but gets saved by Shaggy and Scooby hitting the board she was standing on,as for Fred I'm unsure why he never was hypnotized.
I hope we get more of these Scooby videos
the ghost clown is pretty much a serial killer if you think about it
Doc please love my comment I've been a fan of your work for a very long time and you're my favourite horror RUclipsr
Need to buy all the episode
Gonna disagree with you on one point. Daphne in that costume is not boring, those legs.
It is distributed to think that the Ghost clown might have watched her Change. Maybe he wanted to keep her for himself.
this was a cool episode for a few minutes In this one the clown almost looked like a real ghost I kinda wish they used this bad guy more great review bro
Scooby-Doo!! 🐾
Gone to buy season 1 and 2
I hope one day Cyd or DW reviews Scooby-Doo and the Boo Brothers...
Nice... one of my favorite episodes cool♡scoob
How about a gaggle of galloping ghosts
Probably of the smartest villains in the entire show. Shame he got owned by a really dumb trap.
Nice video cyd
A genuinely horrifying villian!
AT LAST!
Sweet.
Bring this bakc
Great episode 🤡
Makes me wonder what this show could have done if it had a full hour block instead of 30 minutes.
Hey doc
Hey Wolfy! When is the next case gonna come out
❤❤❤❤
This episode use to scare me when I was a kid its bc of that clown
🙂🙂🙂
And after this the Scooby-Doosday is dead
More coming soon ? 🥺
I missed these, I wonder why'd you stop at episode 9 for a while, it's been months? 🤔
Hi sid I’ll never forgive you for almost killing woody and buzz
You know I have watched 10 of these videos now and I got to ask: is there a reason you are combining jinkies and jeepers into one word? It is a bit distracting.
