  • Pressing an entire roll (10m) of alu foil.
    We made a big ball from the roll, and kept pressing it till it was a solid block of aluminium :) If we would have pressed further it only would break over and over again.

      Aluminium isn't dense enough to collapse its mass onto itself, if you compress H20 a few times though. But I doubt that anyone or anything can even compress water.

      --"Could you give an example of what industrial application you would use
      this press for?"
      In addition to what "idii ace" mentioned, hydraulic presses are also commonly used for pressing bushings, bearings and other parts into metal bosses or housings for a tight "press fit" or "interference fit". While metal parts are often attached to each other by welding or by screws and bolts, it is also common to press a cylindrical part into a tube-shaped hole that is actually slightly _smaller_ than the part. This is called an "interference fit", and as you might expect, it requires a tremendous amount of force. Once the cylindrical part is forced into the hole, it is permanently installed and can't be removed. (If you need to remove it for whatever reason, you have to drill it out.)

      @orgnish 7 лет назад +40

      Jota C Yes but the heat caused by friction of folding and pressing is not enough to fuse the aluminum laminations unless you press with hundreds of thousands of PSI. He is able to touch it with bare hands.

    • @JotaC
      @JotaC 7 лет назад +11

      Cody Cigar as I said, aluminum is not the hardest metal out there, even in foil form it still has metallic bonds, even by folding with hard enough with your hands you make new bonds, that's why sometimes you can't unfold it back, with hydraulic press I'm pretty sure it creates strong bonds and its just a bit away from being solid because there may be a few molecules of air in there

    • @valshaped
      @valshaped 7 лет назад +31

      Jota C the layer of aluminum oxide (created naturally when aluminum touches air) stops that from happening. No amount of pressing will change that, unless the oxide layer (and the foil itself) were to tear. Even still, it oxidizes quite quickly.

    • @Khepriem
      @Khepriem 6 лет назад +14

      Taron Smith Literally the first thing that pops up when you look up solid definition.
      Solid / sol-id
      1. firm and stable in shape; not liquid or fluid.
      "the stream was frozen solid"
      synonyms: hard, rock-hard, rigid, firm, solidified, set, frozen, concrete
      "the ice cream was solid"
      2.
      not hollow or containing spaces or gaps.
      "a sculpture made out of solid rock"
      So I ask you, was that ball of aluminum firm and stable in shape? Was it hard, rock-hard, rigid, firm, solidified, set, frozen, or concrete? Did it not contain spaces or gaps?
      For fucks sake people, you have access to all knowledge, why do you not use it before being so sure of yourselves as to correct someone? All it would have taken is looking up "Solid" and "definition"!
      "It's either solid liquid or gas" You're referring to the absolute five phases of matter, but you only said three. There are five known phases, or states, of matter: solids, liquids, gases, plasma and Bose-Einstein condensates. The main difference in the structures of each state is in the densities of the particles.
      SOLID
      In a solid, particles are packed tightly together so they are unable to move about very much. Particles of a solid have very low kinetic energy. The electrons of each atom are in motion, so the atoms have a small vibration, but they are fixed in their position. *Solids have a definite shape*. They do not conform to the shape of the container in which they are placed. They also have a definite volume. The particles of a solid are **_already so tightly packed together_** *that increasing pressure will not compress the solid to a smaller volume.*
      So if your ignoring all other ways people determine if something is solid (like the ones I've stated above) and only going with the solid-phase definition, you'd still be wrong.
      But at least we've learned something here. You DEFINITELY didn't know what a solid is, but maybe you do now. Don't feel too bad, some people believe the earth is flat.

    • @addagwenlyn9662
      @addagwenlyn9662 8 лет назад +4

      The primary reason for gauge failure is vibration. In traditional dry gauges, delicate links, pivots, and pinions are prone to damage from vibration, leading to inconsistent performance. In a liquid-filled gauge, the fluid fill effectively dampens system pulsation, making the gauge pointer easier to read.
      Likewise, humidity and moisture pose problems for dry gauges. Condensation can make a gauge difficult to read or, in some cases, can cause failure due to icing. Liquid-filled gauges, though, are sealed to prevent internal condensation, and by keeping moisture out of the system, gauge movement is protected during icing conditions.
      The choice of fill fluid is based on the application, but glycerin is typically used for room-temperature applications and silicone oil is commonly used for extreme temperature applications, especially when icing is a problem. An oil with insulating properties is ideal if the system has exposed electrical contacts.

      tin sometimes refers to a thin sheet of metal, like a tin roof is not made of tin

      The name Tin Foil came from years ago when they truly did make it out of true Tin. Then the iindustries started to uncover more and more aluminum thus making it cheaper than tin and that's why some people still call it that. Although nowadays it's supposed to be aluminum foil, tin foil is just easier and faster to say, that's probably why it stuck around :P

    We have a 200 ton press at work. The management allowed me to place my own aluminum recycle bins all around to collect all the cans. 50 people can generate a shit ton of cans. Once a week I take them all and compact them into a solid block. I take all the blocks once a month to the scrap yard and earn about a dollar for every two pounds. I am averaging 70 lbs a month so I get about $30. It's not much money, but it's something.
