Obviously they can’t do the job but know how long it will take
Shame they don’t realise they are paying for the knowledge knowing how to do it not the time it takes

I've been in this game since the mid 70's. Now I'm supposed to be retired, but never seem to manage it. Fortunately, most of my customers have grown up with me, they looked after me when I started; so I do the same now as they slowly dissapear. I don't look for work anymore, but still get recommends. It hasn't happened much, but if a potential customer starts questioning or complaining about a quote, without a good reason. I just tell them they need to find someone else, and will not go back under any circumstances. I may be fortunate; but the big difference between when I started plumbing and now. Is that we used to compete for customers; now the customers compete for tradesmen. I think after trying unsuccessfully to get 3 youths interested over the last few years, it will only get worse, and our value will increase. You are still in the right age group to benefit too.

I had a very similar situation.
Customer phoned me in the afternoon. As an emergency she wanted me out same day as she tried installing a new basin vanity unit herself. She completely messed it up.
Asked if I could just come and sort the two 15mm pipes and add a couple of isolation valves. Then she would do the rest as the pipes she done was leaking.
I attended a couple hours later around 5-6. Done the job and I only charged a £45 call out that’s all in including the two isolation valves I supplied.
She said she was happy with it but then I received a text when I got home saying that seems a lot of money for 25 mins work and should only be around £15 because another plumber she spoke to said £45 for an hour so she thought she would devide the £45 into the hour 🤷🏻‍♂️
I said including travel it’s the best part of an hour plus emergency same day call out.
Like £15 really???? £5 fuel plus tax I would of earned about £6-£7.
    Ended up with £40

Was she on benefits perhaps? Maybe she was so tight because her budget and finances were also tight?
£45 was very fair for same day call out!
I would just take it that she's out of touch and low on income. Don't take personally. Others might have charged her more! Only a mate would have charged her less!

Thanks Mark feel free to rant away we have all been in this situation. 😂😂 The thing that always gets me most is not when they argue about the price because I can’t always break that down for them but when they argue about the time.
I was told the other day to my face that it would only take me an hour to do a radiator job ( it would have taken four hours).
I turned around and started to walk out. When she asked me where I was going, I told her she didn’t need me she obviously knew what she was doing. I wasn’t rude, I just said goodbye and left. I didn’t need the extra work and was doing it as a favour. 😂😂

I had similar problem many years back, gave a price was accepted done job and then they say "well you were only her 2 hours that's $%&&** per hour I'm not paying that" well you agreed, it was a price you accepted and was willing to pay why should I spend 3 days here so you feel that it cost you "Y" amount per hour??? I said no probs I'll rip the lot out and someone else can come and do job, they paid in the end.
I feel your pain with these people, me, you and others are skilled people and charge accordingly.
I would not go into an Indian,Chinese , Italian resturant order a meal and then haggle at the end that it was too much, that was price on menu so I pay that unless I had issues with meal.
Chancers these lot, be good to know what her job is?? see what she would say if you wanted her services and then knocked down her hourly rate 🤭

Inflation is the devaluation of money. You seen the price of copper, brass, plastics? Bought a stash of copper tube 3 years ago. About £4K worth then... I bought 9 1/2 ounces of gold. Has held it's value against devaluation of fiat currency for over a hundred years. I pay tax on copper, tax on income derived and tax when I weigh it in...No purchase or sales tax on the other stuff. No brainer for me.

Hi Dave, love to watch your channel, very interesting video. One of the main issues here is the method of communication. Firstly may I just add that your quote was In my honest opinion represented great value! maybe a little under priced. I would have been more than happy to accept your quote.
Anyway... besides the point. The trouble with email and texting is its faceless there is no consequence to saying thats too expensive via the written word. Clients does not understand what is involved... (No telling you how to such eggs Dave) but if it was convenient for you to drop by and see the client face to face you may not have had that reaction, in addition you may have seen other work that needed to be done enabling you to increase your quotation. My business is completely different to yours but on occasion I have the same issues. Sometimes small jobs are simply not worth the business.

I liked your 'rant' but you are absolutely right about your annoyance with that woman. When I give a quote and the person agrees it it doesn't matter if I take an hour or two days - that's my price take it or leave it. If he/she starts haggling I will ask for the money before I start and if not I walk away. They seem to think a plumber can work for £10 an hour. I ask them how much they pay for a Solicitor's advice which takes 20 minutes!!

Good morning Mark, from the land down under. Sadly, this is a worldwide problem and I blame social media. These days anyone and everyone jumps onto RUclips, watches the local handyman for 5mins or so and can get an immediate answer to their problems. The USA is big on DiYers and RUclips is full of them. If a customer tells me how long it should take, Im more than happy to lend them my tools and they can show me, funny enough the very few that have questioned me have never taken up my offer. I always like to look at things from both sides. I think the biggest problem here, is that you're dealing with the customer via a third party. I believe if you were able to speak with the customer directly, you would have been able to give your professional view on how the job would be done, and why your price was fair. If she didn't agree after that, then at least you were able to justify your price. There are too many cowboys out there that would have done the job for £100, satisfying the customer's pocket initially, but then having to pay again to put the job right! That being said, I totally agree that the cost you gave was more than fair, you're not cheap and not expensive, but you clearly take pride in your work and want paying for it accordingly. Keep up the with the excellent content.

Asked if I can swing the door the opposite way round on the door frame, trim it all down to suit. Rebated door frame, so I need to router it all out as can’t move the slam strips. Not part of the original quote.
Gave him a cost and the client started telling me how easy of a job it is and how much his prepared to pay which was pennies.
Told him to get a handyman in if it’s too much but I won’t be doing it.
Crazy how customers have started telling trades how much we can charge. I thought it was us who should be telling them what we charge.

I’ve been told by plumbers they’ll charge 700 just to find a tint leak in the wall for a 9 dollar pipe…200 is nothing, we’ve even paid 160 just for the air conditioner just to have a tiny piece not even 20 dollars replaced

  • @can-be-askedhandymanproper3015
    @can-be-askedhandymanproper3015 4 месяца назад

Interesting video Mark, thanks for posting...
Time taken isn't a tenable method of charging for work. As you get more experienced/skilled, you get quicker. Why on earth would a tradesman punish themselves by charging less, for more skilled and quicker work. A job has a value, the value is based on the outcome.
Plumbing work is loaded in comparison to other domestic work, because of the potential for expensive leak damage etc. It is a big responsibility!
There are internet forum tradesman charges, available to customers to check out pricing, with regional differences added in, so there is no excuse for a customers misconception on price.

Drives me mad. One of the things that are making this situation worse is the rise of the 'middle man'. Those websites that customers go to that then charge the tradesman about £30 for the customer's contact details. Customer usually has no idea that the tradesman has been charged this. You try to recover that charge by addingbit onto the quote, then the customer says that's too much, so you loose the job and your £30. These days I completely avoid any customer that says:
    "A quick job"
    "A simple job"
    "A good day's work"
"Can you do it for 'X' amount

A mate of mine is a cabbie. The other night I asked him how much he made last year. Now he's a good mate and he won't bullshit me. He came back with 90k for a six day week.
Now a lot people are going to be stunned by that. Eff me, 90k for a year of cabbying.
But then you put in the fuel costs incurred driving round all day. The depreciation on a decent car (you can't do it in a banger). The servicing and maintenance on a decent car. There's no sick pay, no holiday pay, no pension. If you don't work you don't get paid. Suddenly it doesn't look so good.
    And that's cabbying - it's not a skilled job.
People haven't got an effin clue.

  • @josephfelts6560
    @josephfelts6560 4 месяца назад +1

Mark, have you published this video previously? I swear I've seen it before, or something similar you had with a customer. If not, then well, like you said, it's real world. Thing was to evaluate and price a job. I would also think we tradesmen get those where the customer feels not to take up the estimate or even try to discount it.. I don't mind, but there's a limit, cannot undercut myself too much.
And when you compare to the work you do get, and perform, these ones like the above are about 1 out of 50 or so, even 100, and they are bound to come along. Main thing was you did what was necessary, it wasn't a given they would accept, they didn't, fair enough, move on.
Considering the work involved, she was nuts to have turned it down, and I think it showed in the end to your mate, from her. You get the work, you love the work, know your business, and 95% of the time we're on the same page. It's your bread and butter, but if you have, or when you have, someone being unreasonable, you give it some time, some patience, then say 'enough is enough', and leave it. One thing you're NOT going to do is stress yourself.
