  • I thought I’d see how good the new Helix 3.0 Acoustic and 12 String effects were together plus compare it with my Variax. Can I get away with not switching guitars?

    Play the variax together with the helix and you have a 24 string guitar.

    Great demo. I've been trying to mock up a 12 string sound for my signal chain for my acoustic guitar patch, and I suspect it'll do well with a real acoustic feed versus the emulator... but will be adding an acoustic emulation to some electric guitar patches too. Thanks.

    Very similar to my ears. The Variax is brighter, but that could be addressed with EQ, I think, to make them sound identical.

      It's interesting that there have been comments saying the Variax is so much better too, that says something about what people expect to hear and preferred tones. I must admit I use the Variax for this song live and the preset has the EQ adjusted to give more body and it sounds epic through a Stereo FRFR rig.

      It was 12 string with the mix full, acoustic sim with Jumbo and bass 0, US Princess amp/cab and a spring reverb. Since the video I switched the amp for just a simple EQ and that’s pretty good too. Make sure you use a bright pickup setting too. Middle single coil if you have one, but it works well with my Les Paul too on middle setting with both pickups coil tapped.

    For what it is... I don't think I'll ever be in the market for a Variax again. I think the Ibanez sounds great, and I know when it comes to high gain traditional guitar sounds it will be better than the Variax, from my experience running them. Thanks for posting!

    • @surfdigby

      You could use the magnetics from the Variax through the acoustic simulator, and mix it with the Variax digital output and have a six string acoustic in one channel and a 12 string in the other.
      And then set up a second magnetic path going into a Vox or something for a wall of sound.

    • @davidupton8100
      @davidupton8100  3 года назад

      I have 3 Variax guitars, they are brilliant, don’t let this put you off. This test was probably a little unfair on the Variax because I could have tweaked the EQ to bring it closer. Also you can do individual string tuning and switch mid song on the Variax and if you have a Helix you can control all guitar control changes with snapshots which is brilliant when playing live.

    • @surfdigby
      @surfdigby 3 года назад +1

      Yeah, the Variax is so much more than just "can sound like a bunch of different guitar", especially now that they have magnetic pickups of their own.
      Being able to swap tuning in the middle of a solo so that you can play open string licks that would otherwise be impossible is a great way to confuse the guitarists in the audience.

    I don’t understand why the variax doesn’t get more love from the guitar community. It’s amazing for live use and recording to. It’s the most versatile guitar in the world. It’s the best guitar I’ve ever owned. Variax Standard! Fantastic value.

      The Variax has some fundamental sound issues. Mainly in the way that the piezo pickups work. They have this really hard, super compressed sound to them, with a pop on the pick attack that you just cannot get away from, no matter what you do. Rolands GK system worked so much better for doing this than the Variax. I honestly am not sure what Line 6 doesn't come out with a revision to it that eliminates the issues. Was great in concept, but again I sold the two that I had for that reason. I have seen a video, of this Korean kid on YT that told me that he puts tape around the balls of his strings in the Variax and it eliminates a lot of that pop on the pick attack. But for now I will just stick to my Roland VG if I need stuff like that, or just use the tools in Helix or TH-U to do the same. Also, BlueCat Re-Guitar, is amazing. It will nail just about any sound from any sound of pickup.

    Can I "cheat" with this with my acoustic 6 string guitar and let it sound like a 12 string? I created a nice preset for my acoustic but when I use the 12 string block it doesn't sound like a 12 string. Your electric guitar simulates it better. What am I doing wrong?

    • @davidupton8100

      I have a preset for my acoustic 6 string to sound like a 12 string. 2 things, does the 6 string sound ok without the 12 string block? Many people try and use and amp and cab which tunings the acoustic tone. Secondly, it only sounds good i'd it's turned up loud enough to drown out the real acoustic or through headphones.

    • @SjaakShirly6559
      @SjaakShirly6559 3 года назад +1

      @@davidupton8100 thanks. If I try to understand what you are saying is: use no (pre)amp and cab in the preset. You have to turn up the level/output of the 12-string block to match with the normal acoustic sound. Am I correct?

      @davidupton8100  3 года назад +1

    Listening on my iPhone, the Helix sounded a lot better. I think the Helix sounds more piezo-y, which for some might be a bad thing. For me, playing live in a cover band I'm usually trying to reproduce a particular tone, and everyone's already used to hearing that piezo sound on the live versions of a thousand classic rock staples, so I like it. The Variax sounds more microphonic, but not in a good way. It reminds me of a 2006 Taylor 314ce that I used to have. 06 was the first year for Taylor's Expression System, and I absolutely hated it. Real thin and metallic. They've improved the ES immensely since, but that first iteration was garbage to my ears in a live mix, for what I was doing at the time anyway. I traded it for an 02' 514 that has a Fishman piezo pickup, and it's way better in a full band mix. The Helix in this video reminded me of that guitar through my Zoom 504's 12-string simulator.

    • @davidupton8100
      @davidupton8100  3 года назад

      Yes, the pickups on the Ibanez have a great warm full bodied sound in all situations, there are a few reviews of these on my channel. The Variax is a brilliant guitar (I have 3) but the Shuriken seems to have a thinner sound from the same models than my JTV59 but you can EQ this of course so in reality I could have got this sounding better and you might then argue it sounds a bit more authentic.
