    Here is a Dialing In... video that I have had many requests for, using the Helix and Variax to create usable acoustic guitar tones. So, in this video I do just that and show how we can create great acoustic guitar tones for studio and live with just the Helix and Variax. If you would like to hear how this preset sounds in the mix, you can do so here:

    It's deceptively good sounding because Im pretty sure your lapel mic is picking up your pick scratches - making it sound like a properly mic'd acoustic.

    • @JasonSadites
      @JasonSadites  2 года назад +20

      That is completely incorrect. I take great care to edit out any bleed from the mic in all my videos, otherwise the tone demo is useless. It is is the part of my video editing that takes the longest time but is most important. Nothing deceptive about what is being heard in this video. Please refrain from making assumptions that are not beneficial in anyway.

    • @CFox.7
      @CFox.7 2 года назад +2

      @@JasonSadites Calm down. Even my wording lets the reader know I was speculating. You telling me what I can and can not speculate about because it doesn't support your publicly broadcast video ? Are you kidding me? Lol.
      Anyway. Tell me how you painstakingly remove all the ambient percussive strikes from your lapel mic recording. I got Izo RX... all audio surgery tools create artefacts.

    • @MattLGreer
      @MattLGreer 2 года назад +10

      @@CFox.7 Considering the Variax sound is not acoustic (i.e. it's not mic'd), all he has to do is mute his mic. Quite simple if you think about it for a moment or two. ;)

    • @CFox.7
      @CFox.7 2 года назад

      @@MattLGreer ofc and I wish I could get my jtv59 sounding that good. I do hear him talk and play at same time in some places.

    • @JasonSadites
      @JasonSadites  2 года назад +22

      And this here is everything wrong with the internet wrapped in one dysfunctional commenter.
      "Your wording lets the reader know you were speculating"? If you were, in fact speculating, why did you not just ask me politely if my mic was picking up the guitar strings? Would have been simple to do. Instead you start your comment off with a definitive statement ("It's deceptively good sounding because...) to try and mislead readers to believe that what I demonstrated in the video is not accurate, when in fact you are wrong in your assumption.
      To answer your question, you are more than within your rights to speculate, but I am also well within my rights to respond to set the record straight so my viewers are not misled by a commenter who is completely an utterly incorrect in their assumptions, in this case that would be you.
      Where it really goes off the rails for you and you expose yourself as a complete amateur who does not know what he is talking about, is when you question how I remove the "percussive strikes" from the recording and then assume I would use Izotope RX. Why would I use such an inappropriate tool such as RX for this? That makes no sense. I simply record my lapel mic for my voice on one track and the direct Variax track on it's on isolated track. When I edit the video I simply cut all the lapel mic track out everywhere where the guitar is playing without me talking. It really is that simple but slightly time consuming but well worth it so the listener can hear the guitar by itself. The fact you don't realize it can be done this way shows you know absolutely nothing about what you are talking about and you should likely stay out of conversations of this sort to avoid making yourself look even sillier in the future.
      I see you admit you wish you could get your JTV59 sounding this good. Might I suggest instead of spending your time going online and making false assumptions about others workflow in making videos (which you obviously know nothing about), you should maybe practice more so that when you do play it actually sounds good? Thanks.

    This is one of the reasons i bought the Helix. It will be here this week. Can. Not. Wait. Thank you for the video. In my anticipation, i thought the EQ would give me the answer i needed for my Variax on the acoustic models. You have pretty much laid out what i am wanting to do.

    When I initially set this up, I wasn't 100% sold on it, but I wasn't happy with what I had and figured, I'd give it a shot at a gig before totally passing judgement on it. I am pleased to say, it worked REALLY well, live. I have a JTV69s. It even made the 12 string useable which I have also been struggling with. Thanks, Jason. Keep up the good work.

    Excellent suggestions! I'm brand new to the Variax/Helix combo, just acquired then to use for an acoustic duo. Didn't want to beat my hands up every night with heavy acoustic strings, plus the ability to instantly change tunings and instruments gives me so many more options.

    That is cool. I had a similar setup for my own JTV59 / Helix combination but it hadn't occurred to me to stack the two EQs like that. What did work for me though is adding the ADT with a judicious amount of slop.

    Just purchased a jtv59 and came straight here to build an acoustic patch. The factory acoustic setting feels so lifeless, and not a whole lot better than a semi acoustic model, although I did was factory reset the variax and update the firmware.
    Sounds so much better after this, all I did was lift the low shelf gain a bit for my speakers.
    Thanks Jason for your work, saved me a lot of messing around!

    Hi Jason, nice video!. It is a different approach to other videos were they used mic preamps and other effects, I find your approach more natural sounding. Thanks for the patch!.
    As a thank you I'll give you a tip that will make your videos easier: to switch on and off an effect in HX edit that it is already selected (has the white frame) just press the Space bar on your keyboard, and to move to the effect next to it just use the right & left arrows, this saves you from having to point and click with the mouse and you can A-B much easier.

    Jason, I recently replaced most of my gear with the purchase of both a Variax and a Helix and your videos have been a godsend in learning how to get a usable tone out of them. One thing you did not touch on in this video was the use of the tone control for mic placement. Wondering about your thoughts on that.

      Brad Tapolcsanyi no doubt, as the Variax models are emulating a miked up acoustic, rather than an acoustic electric piezo direct output. 😉👍

    I love the choice of vinyl!!! 🤘😜
    You’ve been missing out brother!! But yeah, the Silent Guitar have their own magical sound as well. Between a Variax, Silent Guitar, and TransAcoustic, I don’t really need anything else! (Though we all know I can’t stop buying guitars. I have a problem, but you knew that.) 😉👍 LA Studio Comp and some Reverb are my staple blocks for Variax acoustic models. Good choice. Sounds great, bro! 👊

    Great video mate 2 things though. I use the Mic Preamp with my acoustic presets that gives me a good boost on the acoustic patches with my variax. Also i have noticed if i have a compressor on 12 string patch on my variax, if i play any harmonics on any string the variax just looses it. Any thoughts on these 2 comments? I'd be interested to know your opinion.

    I've seen vids on youtube regarding the 12 string models and to get rid of the warble sound. They say to mute the transients from the strings after the neck nut before the tuners. Have you tried that. I find the warble makes the 12 string models sound like garbage. some people use velcro after the nut and some a piece of fabric. I don't own a variax but would be interested to see if this works for you. Also what would be interesting is to see if you have had any problems and any workarounds for the palm muting problem with distorted sounds. some say you have to palm mute right over the piezo rather than behind the mag pickups that were all used to.

    Is it possible to make this kinda setup in one preset with snapshots?

    Gain Lead
    Etc? Like a full preset with all possibilites.

    Just want to mention a point that a lot of people miss in the manual. For the Acoustic guitars, the tone knob controls the distance the mic would be from the guitar, rather than being a traditional tone knob. Remembering that the acoustic models are meant to sound like their mic'd counterparts, not the piezo-electric pickups.
