Thats a killer preset Ritchie. I wish I had a Variax. I will still get this and use it with my real acoustic guitar and just change the input block from Variax to regular guitar and have it as a template. keep it up

I’m in an acoustic trio. I’m looking at introducing some electric guitar for some music expansion (more Eagles, Tom Petty, etc.). I was gonna do a Tele and mic a 5 watt amp that sounds great. Last week I started looking at the Helix because the guy at my church was playing one this past Sunday. It sounded awesome! A few days ago, I started investigating the Variax guitars. This opens up MILLIONS of possibilities! One guitar, straight to the PA, total control, no feedback. Just gotta figure out financing everything... wait. First, I gotta find a Guitar Center or drive to Ft. Wayne (Sweetwater) and hear it, firsthand! Technology doesn’t always work, but I think I could do just about anything with this rig. I’m unsure which model I like best, but I’m liking the 69S just ahead of the 59. I can deal with a chunkier neck, but I’ll try both. Thanks for the work in both your setup and the video, Richie. It sounds great!
just get it you wont be dissapointed. If you get the Variax be sure to check out Chad Huskey's youtue channel he is a Variax genius.
Hi from Australia, Richie :) New subscriber here - LOVE your videos (and your playing, by the way). I just got the Helix Rack and the Helix Control floor unit yesterday. Together, they seem basically the same as the big floor unit - but with one exception: no expression pedal. So my question: if I add an external expression pedal into one of the expression pedal sockets on the back of the floor control unit, will that be recognized the same as the built-in expression pedal on the big brother floor unit? And which of the 4 expression pedal sockets do I use - does that make a difference? Keep these videos coming - they are an invaluable source of learning and inspiration for all Helix users, especially new ones like me. Thank you :)

What gauge strings are you using and have you messed with physically detuning? I usually use 9's tuned Eb, but I've had several people say that will make the tracking a bit wonky, especially the 12 strings.

Thanks for the video. I downloaded the patch and imported it to the software . but there is no sound when I play. I don't know when did I go wrong . I can see all the blocks. just no sound. I am a new helix user.

Richie, Thank you so much for your videos which inspired me to purchase a Helix LT! I am loving it!!! I downloaded this preset and am not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I do not get an automatic switching to the 12 string model with my JTV-69 when clicking the footswitch marked as such? Is it a global setting or do I have to assign the footswitch after i get presets like this. I know you are extremely busy so if anyone else can assist this noob, I'd be in your debt! I have downloaded many presets which are snapshots and need to know what I'm missing?? Thanks Richie and anyone else willing to assist !!!
Problem: Cannot download the patches, when trying to download, the Gearbox comes up.
Richie have a real cool trick. Buy the acoustic impulses from 3sigma..I run the helix chain as follows compressor a tad eq the ir and a bit of verb. Sounds phenomenal!
I think I have those! Those are sweet, although I prefer the way they sound on a regular piezo. It's night and day!
Richie Castellano I use it on piezo as well thru the helix. As an experiment I tried the 3sigmas on the helix and even the 12 string settings on the variax, and it made a noticeable difference especially with some of the boominess on the acoustic low end

Ok. I've downloaded this preset and it does NOT switch between the 6 and 12 string Variax models on my JTV69 by changing snapshots. Can someone please tell me what to change in Global settings to get this to work correctly!! I'm about to lose my ever loving mind! I know I'm doing something stupid so please forgive, but PLEASE HELP ME! I currently have the footswitches set to 8 snapshot mode. What can I be missing or doing wrong? I know Richie is busy, but has he ever shared his globals?
Hi Richie, New subscriber and already a massive fan of your videos. I recently purchased the Variax standard and was planning to do some upgrades to the magnetic pickups as well as installing some locking tuners. I see that you have also upgraded your magnetic pickups. I would be curious to learn more about what pickups you selected and how easy it was to perform the upgrades. Thanks in advance!
I just changed them to all DiMarzio. Tone Zone S in the bridge, Heavy Blues 2 in the middle, Injector in the neck.

Hi Richie, I'm a new Variax Standard owner and I so appreciate your sharing your knowledge about and experience with the guitar. I'm considering buying the Helix but I notice that it there aren't any acoustic guitar amps or cabs in the Helix yet your acoustic reproduction sounds great. Could you please advise which amp and cab in the Helix you use when playing acoustic guitar and which amp/cab you play it through. Thanks so much. Carey
any of the clean ones should work. the Jazz Rivet 120 is the best most likely as its based on the Roland JC-120 amp. Check out the helixhelp website for all the info on all the amps/cabs/efx info

buddy great sounds .. Just wanted to ask you a few questions..
1- when i am using an acoustic model on the variax and have the compressor on ... if I do a harmonic the guitar seems to loose its mind and make strange sounds .. is that something common? How do i get rid of that?
2- I have a dt25 as an amp, and when i use it with acoustic modeling it doesnt give me a flat sound no matter what i do .. I want helix to bypass the pre on the amp and send the signal direct to the power amp of the dt25. is it possible?
The DT25 doesn't have a high frequency driver, so the acoustic guitars sound like they have been plugged into an electric guitar amp. I think Richie uses a Line6 PA cabinet for a FRFR (Full Range Flat Response) speaker.
Richie - I'm learning a ton from your videos, man! Thank you!! Quick question: I have the Helix LT model and am trying to control my Variax JTV69 to switch from Acoustic to Banjo using your preset as a starting point. I'm trying to edit the controller settings the way you describe at 4:40 in your video, but when I change the min and max values to the settings I want, the sound isn't changing on my guitar. Do you know whether this functionality exists on the LT model. I should say that your patch works just fine on my HxLT, and the sound changes from 6 to 12 string as expected when i press FS2. But when I change the min and max values on my unit, it's not changing. Thoughts?
Also, I noticed the Capo 7 button you created doesn't work on my setup. Again, wondering if the HxLT has something to do with it...

Hi Richie, awesome patches! it makes the acoustic models sound much better. I'm having a problem though, when I step on the capo (footswitch3), nothing happens! and it's the same issue with the capo preset, when I move the expression (exp 2) pedal nothing happens. What could the problem be? am I missing something or could there be something wrong with the hardware (variax or helix)?
Yeah, that's a glitch. All of the pitch controller parameters I programmed don't save properly. I think it's fixed in the new update. Basically you have to re-program it. Go to the input block -> controllers section and re assign the string tuning to the appropriate pedal.

Richie - would you get that same warble using the exp pedal to do a "B-bender" effect on the B string?
Yeah, I tried it. The problem is that we're manipulating the variax tuning feature to create an effect, so I wasn't expecting the smooth pitch slide.
Was revisiting this video and just saw the response - thanks Richie. I guess I'm not getting alerts for responses. Makes it tough to keep up. Also - is it not as easy to deal with the capo effect via one of the Variax controls (possibly TONE control knob)?
Hey man, I saw a video once about how to get rid of all the transients that make the variax 12 string sound so quacky and all over the place. They dampen the strings right after the neck nut by the tuners by placing a foam pad or other under the strings. Again after the nut so it doesn't dampen the actual strings on the fretboard itself. It seems like the tiny high frequencies that resonate mess with the 12 string model. Have you tried this? Also, have you tried putting in an acoustic IR (say a Taylor acoustic) in the signal path to try and make the variax sound more like an acoustic? Or tried using another electric guitar with a nice piezo with a 3rd party acoustic IR to see how that sounds compared to the variax models?
Bas Moza I was telling Richie the same thing. 3sigma audios acoustic irs are great. I've used them with piezo acoustics and also with my variax in helix. They work great
Yeah man. I'm surprised I havent seen more about that. I mean theres all sorts of people trying to simulate their electric pickups or an actual piezo on an acoustic guitar but not a lot trying to do acoustic with the piezo on an electric. I mean I played the variax and really really wanted to love it but I was kinda underwhelmed. I was playing through a PA and A/B it to the piezo on an acoustic guitar and it just didnt have the same brilliance and chime. So Im still hunting for a good option for a piezo on an electric to acoustic stimulation option. Do have any vids youve done or come across doing this with variax + IR or another piezo + IR. Its too bad Richie didnt join us on this topic in discussion

Not many that makes snapshots with both acoustic and distortion electric in the same patch.. Like Acoustic - 12 String Acoustic - Electric Drive - Electric Crunch - Electric Lead etc

Hey Richie , I also had to change the ext to .hlx , but I can not get the "capo" to work ?? Everything seems to work including the looper
You might have to change your settings to "Force Tunings"

This is a glitch with the software that resets the controller changes for variax tunings. Should be fixed by now.

Soundwise they are identical. You only get 2 Sends and 2 Returns (instead of 4 Sends, 4 Returns), but you can still use them as a stereo-pair.
You can only connect 1 Exp Pedal (instead of, i guess, 4).
You have no scribble strips, but the information shows up in the display.
No extra headphones-volume knob and 1 missing digital out.
I´ll be going for the LT. I don´t need all that extra stuff.

Great sounding but why are the files in l6t format? My Helix doesn't recognize them.
Well, in case anyone needs to know, I changed the extension to .hlx and they seem to work fine.
Weird. I'm just exporting them from the helix software and then uploading them to the site.
Same with my Helix, but my Helix won't import them. Just says loading until you turn it off and back on. And I updating the firmware too.
Sorry the only patch that didn't come in was the Rain Song.
Bill Komninos someone else mentioned that you need to change the file extension to .hlx for it to work.
