As someone who watched the reruns growing up, this was an awesome adaptation! And I realized much later that Morticia and Gomez were actually the best example of a loving couple and family I've ever seen on screen. So glad you saw this one! And yes, watch the second one. I didn't enjoy it as much except for the camp scenes, those were hilarious!

When the sitcom first came out on tv Mortica and Gomez were the very first couple to be as affection as they are but also a couple that actually slept in the same bed because at the time married couples were shown in separate beds also in some cases seperate bedrooms. They are classed as the perfect marriage by therapists because they love each other implicitly no matter their faults etc.

The Addams' Family are such family goals. Morticia and Gomez are truly in love, they support and love their children, and every stranger is a potential friend. They're never cruel or rejecting of anyone, no matter how strange the person may seem to them. Unless, of course, the other person starts something. An Addams will always fight back.

The origin of the Addams Family was a cartoon drawn by Charles Addams in 1938, published in New Yorker magazine. It soon became very popular with its dark humor and macabre characters. Addams published books of his cartoon and later the TV series. Addams died in 1988.

Something just registered for me after watching this film at least 50 times.....
Morticia says "Wednesday's great aunt Calpurnia, burned as a witch in 1706...."
Great aunt being the sister of one of her 4 grandparents.
The generation before Morticia, Gomez and Fester were alive nearly 300 years ago 😅
Exactly how long do the Addams's live?

Just reiterated what a few people have already said, Addams Family Values is absolutely a must watch. Mainly due to the fact that they were able to get a great new screenwriter for the movie named Paul Rudnick, who had just done his first independent film called “Jeffery”, a fantastic queer romantic comedy. Needless to say, Addams Family Values amped up the camp value and showed exactly how strong the female characters in the series are, including the new additions. Trust me, it’s worth every second.

Such great movies both are so good . Sadly we never got to see the third film due to the death of Raul Julia sadly taken from us way too soon but the third one was going to be called Addams Family reunion where we meet family from the old country where one his fester and Gomez’s cousin who is like another brother to them . But they all felt is wasn’t right to replace him so they ended the movie with just two . But yeah these are awesome movie and u should react to Addams family values . U will love it

The 2nd film is good as well, mostly because they enhanced Christina Ricci's part as Wednesday and as good as everyone else is, she's the star of both movies. Her line delivery is spot on. I don't hate Jenna Ortega, but her performance can't match this. And there's something really funny to me about a 90s Addams Family movie that I grew up with featuring the music of MC Hammer. I wasn't a fan of Hammer at this time, but there's something about it that just worked for me. I think with a lesser cast, it wouldn't have done as well. This film is more about atmosphere, and the sequel is more about character development. Both have their positives and negatives. I probably like the 2nd one more, just for that iconic line delivery that I won't spoil from Christina Ricci. I've seen all the adaptations going back to the 60s, and oddly enough, these are my favourites because it was the 90s and they were allowed to be a big "edgier." I think it strikes a good balance of being funny and creepy without traumatizing kids. I believe Tim Burton was slated to direct this, but it ended up going to Barry Sonnenfeld, who basically did a good impression of late 80s, early 90s Burton. These guys enjoy creepy, macabre things but they're still a family that cares about each other and if you mess with one of them, you mess with all of them. I guess if you've ever been that weird kid who meant well with the weird family, that would resonate with you. It did with me. These guys all embrace not fitting in so well. They don't want to be like everyone else. They're most happen finding joy in things a lot of people wouldn't, but they never go too far. Nobody actually dies.

Several years back, there was a pilot made for a modern version of The Munsters. It had big names attached, in front of the camera and behind. It starred the likes of Jerry O'Connell, Portia di Rossi, and Eddie Izzard. But it was never picked up to series. However, a year or two later, the network (Fox television, NOT Fox News 😂) needed to feel a time slot one night, and they aired as TV Movie of the Week. It was really good. It's on YT if you're interested, it's called Mockingbird Lane.

Every fandom should get such a movie. They didn't just mine the original TV series, many of the gags are straight from the original New Yorker cartoons. The very first gag, pouring boiling oil on carolers; carrying the children to summer camp in cages; "are you miserable darling?" "yes, completely!"
The cartoons were single panel gags, so the TV series expanded on their characters quite a bit. The dashing, impulsive Gomez was largely the creation of actor John Astin (Sean Astin's step-dad). Lurch was put to better use because of actor Ted Cassidy. His delivery as Lurch was so funny that entire episodes were written around him, including dance lessons from Wednesday to prepare for a butler's ball.
Thing was a creation of the TV series. He was an economical monster, just a hand that occasionally popped out of a box, usually Ted Cassidy's hand. The movie spent a lot more money on special effects, but in his big scene warning Gomez, they got away with just cutting a hole in the table. You can even see the seam of the table where it was pushed back together. I respect that they did that so cheaply and nobody ever catches it.

Yes, you should definitely see the sequel and, if you can, watch the original tv show. Nothing against Angelica Houston but, to me, Carolyn Jones will always be Morticia Addams. You should also check out the original cartoon the show was based on, which ran in the New Yorker for decades starting in the 1930s.

Nick and Jen, I don't know if your familiar with the Addams Family single panel cartoons that were created by Charles Addams and appeared in the New Yorker magazine since the 1930's but Gomez was drawn about 5-6 inches shorter than Morticia but I think Raul and Angelica absolutely embodied and captured the spirit and vision of Charles Addams' creations in this movie and the sequel. You must follow-up by watching Addams Family Values (1993) if for no other reason than the dialog between Gomez and Morticia while admiring the new arrival to the family! I'd say more but the cat's got my tongue..egh..ahhhth..ehth.
