One of the reasons I pick the video over the sound every time.
Just to make it clear, Matty said that the video was supposed to be a mockery of pop videos in general. When some people heard girls for the first time it was heavily criticized as people started accusing The 1975 to conforming to what music society listened to and how the label was forcing them to change the way they played music, so they made the video as 'pop' as it could be, and at the beginning the colours flicker and Matty says 'we're not a pop band' to mimic what some people were saying.
Did people really not get this? God help us all.
And after all that, they now make pop music

@@hhhilde_ No its not really bad but I fell in love with their classic sound. That jazzy, snappy guitar is so sublime and raw. I dont have anything against pop at all but ive never been a big fan of a band that sounds one way then just makes a complete 180. They havent yet and I hope they dont. Thats why I stopped listening to linkin park amd maroon 5.

the oddest thing about matty healy's accent is that his talking accent is nowhere near as strong as his singing accent, like he sounds fairly normal and understandable but as soon as he sings he's almost incomprehensible. this is coming from a brit too, like literally even i don't know where the thickness of the accent comes from
i think he just exaggerates it a bit, more of a style choice.

@@VideoGuy232 Thing is, this song isn't just some "stupid" pop song. It critiques both the way young, idealistic romantic people view relationships versus the way older, more cynical people do. At the same time, the story of the relationship in the song parallels the lead singer's drug addiction. The song is deep on multiple levels, but it also has a catchy melody and very danceable, uptempo rhythm. So yeah, there is some irony there. And the band is comfortable joking about that because they dont take themselves too seriously.
Also, their names are on the songwriting credits so there isn't any reason to believe they didn't write the song themselves.
I hope that helps you see this song in a different light.

They are not the same thing. No matter what the song is about, it is Pop music. Semi-charmed Life is about meth, but no one would argue, that it is not a pop-song. At no point in this video are they doing any hyperbole to show that it is meant to be ironic. This isn't like One Direction saying "we are not a pop band" and then wearing matching outfits and singing to 11 year old girls while playing with puppies. That would be ironic. They are just making a pop-video with hot chicks and saying "well, we don't really want this" but then doing it anyway. It's dumb. The quality of the song is subjective and everyone likes different stuff, so that has nothing to do with it, but it is definitely pop and definitely not ironic.

the 1975's discography played a significant roles in my peak teen years (specifically 17, 18 and 19) i was so obsessed with their songs coming back to it now (im 22) it's a bittersweet memory because i wasn't doing well mentally but now ive grown out of that learned and healed so to the teens who're having a hard time just know it does get better !! don't give up !!
