From what I've read, the song is about his deceased sister who died of an OD so he wrote a song about her. The chocolate is heroin/ other drugs. The song may be aesthetically upbeat but the lyrics are euphemisms for darker things, namely addiction. So it's a neat juxtaposition of light and heavy. Idk, I'm not saying the song is a philosophical masterclass or anything, but It's most definitely not just a superficial song trying to obtusely glorify street violence or swag. At least not unironically.

The first time I heard this on the radio I was 16 years old. I thought it was a good song. I was a singer and loved the voice of the lead singer. I then met a beautiful blond girl who I would fall madly in love with. I was very skeptical of modern music, and grew up listening to classic rock and PinkFloyd. I hated most modern music.
That blond girl and I had a very passionate relationship, love that I never felt before due to the disfunction I dealt with growing up at home. That blond girl formally introduced me to The 1975 and Indi rock. I was hooked. My favorite song On the self titled album was and still is to this day Pressure. I was searching. I became obsessed. We got into a bit of trouble together and frequently smoked chocolate. She was also my first and man was she something.
After a year of dating and walking together through some of the most truly traumatic experiences of our lives via a mutual friend of ours a young girl with a triangle tattoo on her arm killing her self. My girlfriend was devastated and was never really the same after that. I saw her start to really drink and do crazy shit. She ended up knocking about with another bloke, and eventually to my best friend and high school bully.
That was one of the most emotionally traumatic experiences of my life the betrayal when I was so in love. I ended up changing schools because I couldn’t handle seeing her with my best friend who knew I was devastated Over what happened. I saw The 1975 as my last connection to her and I became infatuated with this band. But I also really loved the raw honesty of the lyrics which was so hard for me to find.
I’m some of my most painful depressive states this music was there for me. Every one has a life album that speaks to them on a level that transcends who they are. I felt that I was being directly spoken to, and that the lyrics matched my feelings exactly and reveled things in me that I still don’t always understand. Ive see you guys live twice at Red Rocks and the Fillmore I love this band, and all the incredible guitar licks that elated me as a rock fan in a pop world.
Listening to this album is bitter sweet. I still love it but it comes with a sting that never fully healed. I’m 24 years old now and some late rainy nights I drive the streets or walk the side walks listening to this album (deluxe version naturally) and think about that blond girl and how I never really loved any one quite like that. I don’t think it ever will, but I hope you read this Matty because your music has had a profound impact on me. If you ever want to recruit a decent looking singer to perform Pressure with you (a song I never got to see live) look me up. It feels good to get this out. Never shared this story quite like this.
This song has a special place in my head it reminds me of happy times past, spending nights at my Dad's with my girlfriend, A. we went to Bournemouth from Edinburgh for a holiday- a good four and a half hour road trip. Dad always had the best playlists, the best wingman I could have asked for. Love ya Dad!
