The first jazz concert I ever went to was when my mum took me to see the Mingus Big Band when they came to New Zealand. They opened with Moanin' and Jason here absolutely blew my entire mind so much that the very next day I went to the music teacher at my school and volunteered to play bari sax in my school's jazz band. It ended up being the best thing I ever did. Thanks Jason.
radical
do you know whether chris potter was in the band then?
@@ijfcave Not at that concert but I think they cycle the roster quite a bit. The other members who I recall were Alex Sipiagin and Boris Koslov.
@@dahalofreeek they do seem like the kind of band that wouldnt have a consistent line up
Thanks Jason??? Thanks Mum!!!!
wow. when he comes back in and plays it as a ballad. so beautiful, and the control he has over the baritone is unbelievable!
What a great evening it was
Very entertaining and informative evening.
Beautiful playing. Thank you, Mr Marshall!
Jaaaaysus a size ten mouthpiece with a 4 reed??? That's insane.
AGREED.....CRAAAAAZY. I struggle with a 7* and 2 1/2 reed. lololololol.
no kidding . . Ouch - Ricos are not a 'soft' #4 !
I heard him say in an interview that you have to put enough air through the Sax. Blowing on a 4 Reed is like using a surf board on a mouthpiece bound by a fan belt... lol
it's how he gets his huge faaat sound
It’s for maximum SLAP
Great sound!!! Great playing.... Brilliant performance!!!
Yes, the sound is very good. I like this.
Amazing!!!
Love bari ♥
Wonderful , baritone A low.😊 love it
Amazing
Yes, yes, Jason i outstanding
I play on a bigger tip opening with about the same strength reed. Different manufacturers for both mouthpiece and reed, but the results are the same. I have been playing my set up for years now.
How the hell does he play on a 10 mouthpiece with no. 4 REEDS?
To play with an opening that big you need thick reeds, i use no. 4 on a 5 mouthpiece
steroids!
@@korkfett It's the opposite, actually; the bigger the tip opening the more difficult it is to play stiff reeds.
@@lukasalihein a year later, yes I know this now. do not know why I thought that then hahah
Not sure if you've seen it but in an interview with jay metcalf, he says that "Baritone Sax Players dont use enough air" so he uses a harder setup and to compensate, he uses more air
real nice solo.
increíble debió ser bueno tener una leyenda en su tienda saludos
Bari sax = best sax
Jason has a great singing sound, great ideas and he swings. What more can you ask for?
More videos please!
Bari Stonks 📈📈📈
Super!
Sehr geil ....
I play a Jody Jazz DV Bass 8 on my bari. It gives it something extra
Jason, please post some more vids already.
Yamaha 62 " Lo supera ampliamente !!!
Some guys must just have the lip to support a reed like that without sounding pinched. The great baritonist Pepper Adams was known to use a Rico 5 on his medium-close tip Berg Larsen. Although I myself have never been able to get even close to that kind of strength, personally sitting at more of a 2.5, it just works for some cats. Crazy!
The young North Texas graduate Frank Basile also uses a Rico 4, like Mr. Marshall....
the size of your reed has a lot to do with the size of your mouthpiece too.
I'm pretty sure he uses a fairly wide tip opening
I play 3.5 vandorens sometime 4s depends on the gig b
Can u tell me what I need impove with my audition its in my channel
I was wondering if you guys still have the contrabass and if yes then I might buy it so I was wondering if the sax came with a mouthpiece and reed? Thanks!
Jaden Bubba Indeed we do- James Carter was playing it only last week. Yes it comes with a mouthpiece and we couple certainly add in a handful of reeds to get you going. There's full detials of it on our website...
So I was wondering if there is something like a microphone that i can attach to my alto sax to make it so that when i play a pitch it will come out of some speaker 1 octave lower. that way if i play really quietly so that only the speaker could be heard and not my sax it would sound kinda like a bari. the reason for this is I imagine that this could just be a cheep and interesting substitute for a bari saxophone. Does stuff like this even exist?
ThatGuyYouKnow23 have a look at the "Mooer Vembox" on our site... there's a video of axactly what you're talking about. By the way- it's not done with a mic, its done with a foot operated effects pedal- of the sort guitarists use.....
Sax .co.uk thanks that is pretty much exactly what i was looking for. i watched the video and it was cool. but was the thing he had clipped on to the bell of his saxophone part of the Mooer Vembox or would i need to purchase that separately? also is there a way to drown out the sound of the actual saxophone so you can only here the lower octive part?
ThatGuyYouKnow23 the thing on the bell is a standard clip on microphone, its separate from the effects pedla (you'd need to run that on a loop from your PA or sound desk)... there's a dial which controls how much 'raw' sound of the sax vs how much effected signal is in the sound- roll off to 100% signal and the original acoustic sound of your sax won't come out- though, obvisouly, you'd stil lbe hearing the real sax unamplified...
Which mic and transmitter does he use?
This cat probably practices 30 hrs a day. lololololol. AMAZING!
Organ sounds like a standard Hammond B3 but seems to be only the top half of one!
Just curious, what were his setups on alto and tenor?
Will Brock
Jody Jazz Jet on Alto
Jody Jazz Chicago DV Tenor
Rico Orange Box 4’s across the board.
Thanks!
Sax .co.uk RICO Orange box?! Wow, seems like a pro can make the most unlikely set up work to their advantage!
Alex if I’m correct even Ronnie cuber used orange box
What was the name of the song
Thomas Tovar stablemates
Give the drummer a suit pls
Dan looks as if he's going to cry during his solo.
NOT a 300 UL. can't really tell but appears to be 500 PBX
I wish he tried out the alto and the tenor just chilling on his stand...
Nick Muir Jason put the alto and tenor through their paces on two other songs on the night
Sax .co.uk Did you record those songs:0
I can’t play my bari without a harness. That sling must put awful pressure on the back of his neck.
Not really. After a while, a bari with a neck strap is nothing
