Sosa puts on a show at Derby
By Carrie Muskat / MLB.com
MILWAUKEE -- Sammy Sosa went where no one thought to hit balls at Miller Park before.
Sosa launched homers up, in and out of Miller Park in Monday night's Home Run Derby but ran out of swings in the final round, losing to New York Yankees slugger Jason Giambi, 7-1.
"It was a great show today," Sosa said. "I really enjoyed everything."
What a show.
"Nobody's ever thought about hitting something above the windows," Milwaukee's Richie Sexson said of Sosa, who hit several above them and at least one ball out of the ballpark. It was just like home for Sosa, who routinely belts home runs onto Waveland Avenue over the left-field bleachers for the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.
"The guy who caught that ball was from Wrigley Field," Sosa said of the lucky fan who snared the souvenir. "It's something that just came out."
Sosa hit five home runs over 500 feet in the first round alone.
"I think the measurements were a little short," Sexson said.
The Cubs right fielder really wanted to win this one. He brought Cubs bullpen catcher Benny Cadahia to throw for him. Cadahia lives in Miami in the offseason and throws batting practice for Sosa, starting in January.
Cadahia's brother threw to Sosa in 2000 when Sosa won the Home Run Derby. Last year, no Cadahia was present and Sosa finished second to Arizona's Luis Gonzalez. Good luck charm? Sure.
In the first round, Sosa took the first two pitches, then launched the third 447 feet into the left-center seats.
"That's an appetizer," said New York Mets catcher Mike Piazza, who was doing the play by play on ESPN.
Eight pitches later, Sosa cranked one 496 feet into the upper deck in left near the TGIFriday's restaurant at Miller Park. Sosa's fourth homer sailed 502 feet to center. His fifth was an incredible 520 feet into the upper deck.
"I just want to know what it feels like once," said Arizona pitcher Curt Schilling.
Sosa's seventh soared 482 feet.
"Let's just stop this and go out for dinner," Piazza said. "I'm getting whiplash."
Sosa's 12th struck the scoreboard in straightaway center field.
"After the first round, I was like, 'Oh my gosh,'" Giambi said. "He started out like a house on fire, hitting them almost out of the stadium. It was ridiculous. It was unbelievable."
Sosa's dozen were the third-largest first-round total in Derby competition. Giambi hit 14 in 2001 and Mark McGwire had 13 in 1999.
"I'm just starting to get warmed up," Sosa said.
Sosa advanced to the final by hitting five homers in the second round and topping Sexson by one. On his fifth, Sosa flipped the bat toward home. That was all he needed.
"He's intimidating," Sexson said.
The ball that traveled 518 feet into the steel support probably will still be lodged somewhere in Miller Park's rafters after the season is over.
But Sosa ran out of gas in the final round, hitting only one while Giambi finished with seven.
"The last round I came up a little short," Sosa said. "[Giambi] deserved to win. I realized it's not how far you hit it, it's how many you hit."
Sosa stuck to his "hit one, take one" pitch approach style.
"He swings at one and then takes one so he doesn't get too tired," Cadahia said. "I think he hit too many in the first round."
How serious is Sosa about hitting? He and Cadahia were analyzing his swing in the hallway to the showers in the clubhouse after the event was over.
"He's got tremendous raw strength," said Houston's Lance Berkman, who leads the Major Leagues with 29 home runs at the break, yet hit only one in the first round of the competition.
"He hits balls further than anybody," Berkman said of Sosa. "It's unbelievable. Especially off a batting-practice pitcher who's not generating a lot of power for you. You've got to generate a lot of power yourself."
"I put on a great show for the fans," Sosa said, "and that's what it's all about."

These HR derbys are so nostalgic. The sound of the bat. The sound of the players’ chains moving when they swing. Everything about it is perfect.
Played D1 baseball as a 3B/1B and can look myself in the mirror knowing I never cheated but DAMN... the "steroid era" was entertaining.
Sammy was in a groove that day 😂
They were juiced up!!!
@@slingitandflingitdiscgolf8340 And yet in today's era everyone cries about sign stealing!
@@eddyhernandez8872 he choked in the last round and lost to Giambi.
They need to go back to this format. You can appreciate every homerun better that way
I agree
@@griffeywager2652 you got that sweet camera angle that makes the ball look like it’s going to space. Then to see how far it goes… you can’t do that with this new one
They need to go back to taking roids.Itd be way more fun
@@jcinfan Hahaha Yeah
what the steroids?
Sammy and Mark saved baseball after the strike. This stuff was legendary
Yeah they're the whole reason people watch baseball all the time now. In no way did they tarnish the sport 🤦🏻♂️
STÉROÏDES SAVED BASEBALL
That's was a great year. I'm a sammy fan.
Go Cub's Go
Nope the roids saved baseball
@alien observer stfu puppet.
God take us back to this era. What a great time in baseball
Bro he's hitting balls to this day haven't been hit at Miller Park 😳
steroids can take us back
Sammy drinking jet fuel before hitting that plate
Nowadays ball players are wearing jewelry like wannabe reggeatón artists. Bunch of kens is all I see.
JZ. Go drink a Bud Light
I remember watching this live as a senior in high school. Those were some absolutely beautiful hit baseballs, steroids or not you still have to have great eye and hand coordination. Some were Majestic shots
Exactly
Your reaction time faster tho be honest. Soon as they see it they're able to get the bat around faster cause of juice
@@mical2great I always thought steroids make you stronger. Even if it gets the bat around faster does it help you see the ball better? But your luck and natural skill game gets better
They are throwing the balls right down the plate lol
Nope Roids are magic drugs
524 ft home run is still the longest HR hit in home run derby history
Incorrect. Frank Thomas hit one 525 feet a decade earlier.

Am I the only one that found home run derby more entertaining when they weren't up against a clock? I'd rather see less Homer's while the players can have fun in between swings, but also have the challenge of being very selective with their swings.
I liked this way a lot better. Felt like every pitch they really went for it
What a throwback. Sosa is a legend for this. It was an exhilarating experience watching this live.

Some of the longest, and loudest, home runs you’ll ever see. Amazing
Five home runs over 500 feet in one round. Holy crap.

@@TeddyMusic.Sosa could have hit a ball 400 feet with a fungo or a whiffle ball bat. Who cares? Corking doesn’t help anything anyway. This guys could hit bombs. Period.
@@JohnMegaton2062lol there’s a reason they use cork bats if it didn’t do anything then there is no purpose in using them.. but yea they could hit bombs regardless

@@Parmesan300 haha that's right, you know what it is!
Same. WGN afternoon games were must see TV my entire childhood. Then flipping back and forth during commercials to TBS to watch those great Bobby Cox teams.
besides the original air date watching live, this is the first time I've gotten to watch this where the video doesn't look like it was recorded on an Etch-a-Sketch. This quality is fantastic. Thank you so much for uploading This was probably my favorite for a long time. I loved 1999but watching Sosa hit the ball where he hid it in this video, was just amazing. I remember I would hang up with my buddy that I called to talk about one of the home runs and then I would call him right back to talk about it and then hang up and then call him right back hahaha this was probably one of my favorite performances of all time along with Josh Hamilton in 2008. I believe that if we had statcast back then a lot of these homeruns would be shorter than they are being estimated.when people hit the upper deck or they hit stuff that's high in the air people assume that it has to be like 500 ft but in reality it's only 20 ft past the fence.you don't know if it's coming down from the fly or if it's still on a trajectory where it's got more space to fly.so I think that 520 foot home run would have been quite a bit shorter if we had statcast but none-the-less this was one of the most impressive things I have ever seen. I don't give a shit if he was on steroids.this was entertaining. And steroids made baseball better whether you agree with them or not baseball was saved by steroids.
Bring injectables back and let's make baseball great again
I will bet whatever amount for someone to inject steroid and hit only two homerun the way Sammy used to hit..just two. and I bet you no one will. Sammy was born with that talent and steroid do not make the player talent. so stop the hate.
drboy22 dude the guys clearly juiced lmao that’s not hate
@@a167474 you are right and I agree with you, but my point is that people assume that by injecting it, you can hit pitched ball at 100mph and just hit homerun after homerun. that's the part I don't agree with anybody. juiced do give you more power but do not give you the talent to hit pitched ball at 98 to 100 mph and hit homerun..dud to hit a homerun you need to learn how to swing the bat in a position that only player with experience will know. it is not easy bro..i have play for years and have hit pitched ball at around 94mph..but I have never hit a ball going at more then 100mph. dud is hard to hit it trust me. so juice do not give you the talent, you need to born with it and master it with a lot of practice.
drboy22 yeah true that ! The muscles probably even get in the way of the natural swing
@@a167474 exactly..you got my point.
The good old days. No social media, baseball was lit, sammy was Black, everyone was blasting balls out the park, I miss these times. Ngl
yeah, nowadays every event is filled with hashtags and selfies and all sorts of dumb shit that takes away from the game. Back then everyone was there for the event and everyone was into it. Today half the fans would have their backs turned to take selfies and post them to their instagram that they think anyone gives a shit about.

I remember this HR derby like yesterday. I was 8 years old at the Disney World Sports resort watching it Sosa was my favorite player.
I was 38 and I don't remember jack shit
I remember years back playing MLB The Show and hitting a homerun at Miller Park with Matt Holiday. It ricocheted off the green roof facade just below the upper deck in left, and I thought that was far. Sammy is hitting bombs another 15-30 ft. past that!
Look how people used to enjoy live events - not behind their phones.
"That's in *fond du lac* !!

I'll never forget this, I was 12. Tom Petty "Running down a dream" was the promo song. I know there has been "more impressive" HR derby performances, but this in my favorite.

Yep haha I always thought they said right down the drain. that was the braves theme song for 1 year as well when Sheffield was playing with them and I was watching every day. The 1999 was the first one I ever watched and this one was my favorite for a long time. the only performances that I like anywhere near as much as this one are Josh Hamilton in 2008 and maybe Stanton and judge but this one and Hamilton are definitely my two favorites
@@thickerconstrictor9037 McGwire at Fenway was pretty great also. But yeah Hamilton was an all time performance. A name that will get lost over time, but he was Barry Bonds level good when he was good.
More impressive? No. I’ll take this over Josh Hamilton or Bobby Abreau any day. Those guys may have hit more, but Sosa’s average distance is 478 ft…that’s absolutely ludicrous
Alfonso Soriano’s reaction is the best 😂😂😂😂
Jimmy Rollins too...😁

Steroid era the funnest era in baseball history. Beats Astros cheating ERA.
Joaquin Vierra What the Astros did was bad, but it doesn’t compare with what those guys were doing. They were taking records away from legitimate HOF players, like Hank Aaron. Players that didn’t deserve to have there greatness tarnished by drug users. Cheating is one thing, but standing up and saying I’m better than Hank freakin Aaron, when you’re not, is worse.
@@chrisledbetter9278 The Astros took away single seasons records from players within these last 3 seasons.
What makes you think greats from back in the day weren’t on steroids? There was no testing back in the day so how are we sure they never did it?
You mean the Yankees, Redsox and Astros cheating ERA. Plus whomever else did it.

Steroids or not still one of my favorite players during this time of MLB
I guess you like fake players with no real talent.

Ryan Braun in 2015 against the Giants is the only one I could think of that left AmFam Field on the fly.

I remember thinking as I watched this, that his PACING was BRILLIANT !
No one else paced themselves that way at that time.

I'm grateful to be in that Cubs Era. Sosa and Kerry Woods are a breath of fresh air rewatching them. 115% enjoyable
I wish they would go back to the old format. The best part is watching the players and fans react to absolute nukes which there just isn't time now with how quick the pitches come.
Damn JuJu Smith-Schuster been on the juice.

Such a better format
I say it because of Bonds, Sosa, and McGwire: They used steroids; they were very talented, though; so I think they could have done great things even without roids
Bonds *did* do great things without roids. He didn't start until 1999 and before that, he was the best all around player of the decade and certainly the best hitter.

It's saved baseball and made it better than it ever was
@El Comedy Rogue they are adults. They can choose to smoke and drink both of which are FAR worse than steroids. Ive done steroids on and off for 12 years. I get in depth exams every year on my heart and entire body. The worst shape and health ive ever been in was when I wasnt working out not juicing and eating pizza and fast food. When im on juice I work out 6 days a week I drink over a gallon of water a day I have an average blood pressure of 108 over 62 and a resting heart rate of 70 There is absolutely nothing wrong with my heart. I've gotten an EKG, stress test EKG, I checked for plaque buildup in my arteries, and I'm as healthy as a horse. But if I decide to take steroids and it ends up killing me, then that's my decision. Just like if I want to smoke cigarettes and get cancer it's my decision if I want to drink and Get liver disease it's my decision. And as far as the guy saying shit about the youth of America, that's totally up to them. It's no different than drinking smoking or eating McDonald's everyday. But people don't actually research steroids and don't know shit about them. They just buy into the bullshit they see on TV. There are dozens of things that are completely legal that are far worse for you than steroids. As soon as someone says oh my God it shrink your penis I know right away that they know absolutely nothing about steroids. They assume that he take steroids or just going to drop dead of a heart attack. And these are the people that are stuffing their face with fucking McDonald's and are probably going to die of a heart attack at 45 because they're fat pieces of shit. Yet I will juice for 40 years and be healthier than they ever are
