I thought that their new album was their best since A Dramatic Turn of Events. Aside from the bottom two in my ranking, I think every other album ranges from okay to amazing:
    15. The Astonishing
    14. When Dream and Day Unite
    13. Falling into Infinity
    12. Dream Theater
    11. Distance Over Time
    10. A View from the Top of the World
    9. A Dramatic Turn of Events
    8. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
    7. Black Clouds & Silver Linings
    6. Train of Thought
    5. Octavarium
    4. Systematic Chaos
    3. Metropolis Pt. 2, Scenes from a Memory
    2. Awake
    1. Images and Words

Damn buddy, you pushed all my albums to the very end) train of thought! Dream theater, imagine and words! I think it's on purpose) but also Awake which I don't like at the end too😄

Wow! That's some shocking ranking. Personally, I absolutely love Awake. "Voices" might be my favorite DT song. But also, "Scarred", "Lifting Shadows Off A Dream","Space Dye Vest", etc. I adore that album.
Not a big fan of the stuff the band released after Portnoy left though (with the exception of "A Dramatic Turn Of Events"). I still need to listen to their new album

Probably in the minority here but The Astonishing is actually one of my favorites from them lol. It's the outlier in their discography and I understand a lot of its criticisms (too long, too many ballads, the fact it's almost two hours in length) but idk, it just resonated with me I guess haha. I love how ambitious and musically rich it is (Rudess' piano playing here is beautiful), which makes the ballads more digestible IMO. And the best songs are some of my favorite songs from the band, like The Path That Divides, The Gift of Music, A New Beginning, Three Days, etc. And LaBrie kills it here, he really pushed himself with his vocals. Then again I love literally all of their albums (except the debut probably). Anyways, your ranking is really cool.
    15. When Dream And Day Unite
    14. Falling Into Infinity
    13. Self Titled
    12. Distance Over Time
    11. A Dramatic Turn of Events (love the songs here, but the mixing holds it back)
    10. A View From The Top Of The World
    9. Awake
    8. Train Of Thought
    7. Black Clouds And Silver Linings
    6. Systematic Chaos
    5. The Astonishing
    4. Images And Words
    3. Octavarium
    2. Scenes From a Memory
    1. Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence

    13. Self-titled
    12. A View from the Top of the World (need to listen to it more though)
    11. Black Clouds and Silver Linings
    10. Falling into Infinity
    9. Distance over Time
    8. Systematic Chaos
    7. Octavarium
    6. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
    5. A Dramatic Turn of Events
    4. Train of Thought
    3. Awake (almost put this 2nd....)
    2. Metropolis Pt. 2

But if I could put A Change of Seasons as #1, I would

I got done listening to "When Dream And Day Unite" earlier, and I thought it was a pretty strong record. That was actually the first album by dream theater that I listened to in full just because I wanted to see whether it was good or not. I understand that some fans might not like it, and who knows? Maybe by the time I listen to their whole discography it might rank somewhere in the bottom few for me.

the new album really envigorated my love for dream theater. its my favorite from the mangini era. no songs stand out beyond the rest, yet no songs are skippable. it all flows together nicely. the production is excellent. myung is mixed loudly, and labrie sounds decent too. i love those heavy verse riffs and the keybords are strong in this album too

I wonder if the change in the mix has been a consequence of changing into InsideOut record label. There is now a similar sound to Haken for example which is under the same label. I like the new sound more than in the previous present albums.

Here’s my ranking: (Very tough obviously)
    1. Metropolis Part 2: in my top 5 fav albums of all time, perfection. Fav track is Dance of Eternity. No least fav track.
    2. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence: perfect album, I just like metropolis slightly more. Fav track is either Disappear or Test That Stumped Them All. Least fav is Great Debate.
    3. Awake: near perfect album, probably my least fav song is Voices. Everything else is fantastic. Fav song is either The Mirror or Erotamania.
    4. Train of Thought: really great album, but not a lot of variety, and I do think In The Name of God is slightly overrated and slightly too long. Fav song is As I Am.
    5. Images and Words: this album has really grown on me, it has a top 10 DT song for me, Under A Glass Moon. Least fav song Pull Me Under, even though it’s awesome, I’ve heard it too much at this point.
    6. Distance Over Time: definitely my favorite Mangini era DT album, this one really surprised me. Fav track is Room 137, least fav is Out for Reach.
    7. Black Clouds and Silver Linings: this one is hard to rank, it has a top 5 DT song, Count of Tuscany, but I also think Nightmare to Remember is slightly overrated, and it has my least favorite of the 5 step suite songs.
    8. Dramatic Turn of Events: maybe their most underrated album? It’s just a solid album, no bad songs, no all time favorite songs, just a solid listening experience. Fav song, Lost Not Forgotten, least fav would be This is the life, even though it’s a good song.
    9. A View From The Top Of The World: I’ve listened to this one a few times, it’s growing on me, lyrically it’s not great, musically it’s derivative of past DT, but what makes this album for me is the 20 minute closing track, one of their bests. It’s a fun album though. Least fav song might be Invisible Monster.
    10. Octavarium: Possibly their most overrated album? Obviously some killer songs, but also I can’t stand I Walk Beside You (lol). Answer Lies Within I have to be in the right mood for. Fav song would be Panic Attack.
    11. Falling Into Infinity: this one is a mixed bag, some awesome songs, but also a handful of my least favorite DT songs ever, (You Not Me, Anna Lee, Take Away My Pain). Fav song would either be Hell’s Kitchen or Peruvian Skies.
    12. Systematic Chaos: ITPOE is an amazing song, everything else is just fine IMO, nothing too stellar for me. I also think Ministry of Lost Souls is very overrated. I’m also not a fan of the verses in Dark Eternal Night. Portnoy should stick with drumming lol. I also don’t love prophets of war.
    13. Dream Theater: mixed bag, some great songs like Looking Glass and Enigma Machine, but also forgettable songs like Bigger Picture and Along for the Ride.
    14. The Astonishing: this honestly isn’t a bad album, it just suffers from being too damn long, and none of the songs stand on their own, in order for it to be good, you have to listen to it front to back, which nobody has time for haha
    15. When Day and Dream Unite: I don’t like the vocal performance, production is bad, easily my least favorite DT album. I do like the instrumental track though.

Here’s my ranking for Dream Theater albums:
S: Images and Words, Awake, Scenes From a Memory, Train of Thought
A: A View From the Top of the World, Octavarium, Systematic Chaos, Black Clouds and Silver Linings
B: Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, A Dramatic Turn of Events, Self-Titled
C: Distance Over Time, The Astonishing
    D: Falling Into Infinity
F: When Dream And Day Unite
And if I were to include A Change of Seasons, I would put that next to Images and Words since they originally intended it to be in that album and it is one of the greatest prog metal songs ever written.
Also, I think absolutely none of Dream Theater’s albums is actually bad in any way, with the exception of When Dream and Day Unite and Falling into Infinity.

Ok, since writing this comment I actually thought really long and hard about it and this is my honest ranking of Dream Theater’s albums:
      1. Train of Thought
      2. Awake
      3. Images and Words
      4. Scenes From a Memory
      5. Black Clouds and Silver Linings
      6. Systematic Chaos
      7. A View From the Top of The World
      8. Octavarium
      9. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
      10. Distance Over Time
      11. A Dramatic Turn of Events
      12. Self-Titled
      13. The Astonishing
      14. Falling Into Infinity
      15. When Dream and Day Unite
Also, looking at Scenes from a Memory just as a piece of art and a concept album, I think it’s actually one of the best concept albums ever written. I would rank it even higher than Pink Floyd’s The Wall or anything like that. But just personally for me, I don’t like listening to concept albums all the time.

I can’t rank all 15 albums, but I know that the most listened album for me is Black Clouds And Silver Linings.
IMO their absolutely best blend of accessability and their progressive madness!

I always love it when people have very different tastes and opinions from my own. It challenges my views and makes me go back and relisten to these albums. Awake has always been my favorite album of theirs, and I was never a fan of Images and Words or Metropolis Part 2, which are fan favorites.

@@pairofjeansreviews2034 But I do share your bottom 4. The Astonishing has so much potential. Some great melodies and riffing going on, but as you say, the rock opera thing really destroys anything good on this album. I even saw two shows on that tour which were performed in a small concert house. Everything was perfect, except the stupid story of "the music tyranny".

Awake has always been my #1. But my fandom started in 1995 so I am probably partial to that era. Hearing that Kevin was leaving the group was devastating to me.
I still love most of Falling into Infinity. Some of the demos are better than what ended up on the album. Look for You or Me and the demo of Take Away My Pain is amazing.
But I really enjoy most of their discography. So it isn't just Awake for me, but it is the most complete album for me. Just perfect from start to finish.

For me A View From The Top Of The World is the second weakest other than the self titled, didn’t enjoy it too much

@@pairofjeansreviews2034 Yeah, I just dislike everything they've made after Octavarium. Prefer Moore over Rudess on keyboards, so the fact that those classic albums where so low made me faceplam lol.
