Kody Sat On His Butt As His Children Were Being Raised By Other People

  • Children need as many people in their corner as they can get. In some cases this means that people outside the family have to step up. Unfortunately, for the children of the Brown family the person who's responsibility it was to step up, refused to do so. Kody decided to have 18 children with four women. He also decided to have very little to do with those children as they grew up. During an early episode he made the excuse that he didn't want to have his sparse time with the children polluted by him being a parent. Someone should have told him early on that being present is the job.
TLC's Sister Wives cast members Christine, Janelle, Meri, and Robyn, all find themselves in a very unfortunate situation.

I just realized; Kody almost checked himself into the hospital to be near Robyn with her mild Covid drama. He was so worried about her. He said hospitals were where people go to die. But he was fine letting his daughter have major spinal surgery states away. He cares about who he cares about. It's sad.

I remember someone (maybe Dr. Phil?) telling a story that his kids were being rude and disrespectful and laughing to their mom in the car, and he pulled over and yelled at them to NEVER again speak to HIS WIFE in that manner - and that was powerful. A powerful lesson of a spouse standing up for their partner and letting the kids know that they are a team that will always have each other's back!

Yes they did. Many years ago that happened in our family. My great grandmother had a heart attack having her 13th child. Her oldest daughter, my great aunt, had to take over and raised that baby as her own. She was 10 or 12 years old. I remember talking to my aunt and she resented it even later in life, her 60s and 70s. But she always took care of her brother

James, unfortunately, I had the same experience as Gwen in regards to having an absent dad. His parenting skills mirror Kody's to a tee, including not being a caring father during a major surgery that I had to have. Even though I was an adult at the time, my father never called, visited, or checked on me or my children during this crucial time in my life. Thank God I had a wonderful mother! I understand how Gwen feels, but I know that not all men are absent fathers. James, from listening to you, your children are very fortunate to have an awesome Dad!!

Kody is the type of father who refers to being the parent responsible for his children without a wife present as "babysitting" rather than PARENTING. A realization that makes me sad is he was probably more involved with his kids than he would have been otherwise because of the show.
We also see a snapshot of how Kody is willing to disrespect his own mother in an early episode of the show. I wouldn't be surprised if his sons' picked up their disrespectful behavior towards their mom from watching how Kody mistreated and manipulated his wives.
Those young men never had a healthy example of how a man treats his lady and reacts when someone has disrespected her. Fortunately they seem to have grown into men who respect and love their mother, despite Kody's awful example. Or maybe recognizing how Kody disrespected their mother and Christine played a role in it

So much respect for your parents who were active and present in your young adult and adult life! I think it's shameful to see grown parents treat their teenagers as "the little husband" or "the placeholder caretaker". Your parents seem to have communicated that they have a healthy partnership and that you as their child are your own individual. They didn't treat you like "built-in babysitting" or "disciplinarian to your siblings". I've seen classmates from religious families raise many of their younger brothers and sisters and then agree they don't want children in their adult lives. Let's not forget - the original wives didn't have the luxury of a nanny!! 😂😂😂 Nanny needs to charge for the existing kids PLUS consulting level fees for dealing with Kody!!

I expected a certain behavior. And respect. They are all over 30. If they walked into my home and I snapped my fingers and pointed to the sofa, every one of them would take a seat. The pride I have with my sons is unreal. And we plan a fam vacation and are excited about it.. My boys want thier mama, and I want my boys. Kody said that to help Christine would be giving her too much attention and would be unfair to the other wives. Obviously, Jynelle did not step in to help either. Christine then resorted to tasking poor little Aspyn with getting all of her siblings ready for bed every night. I just thought it was messed up that Kody would not help even though he was THEIR FATHER and literally in the same house. Jynelle also refused to help despite living in the same house. Christine practically raised all of Jynelle’s kids for her, too. Meri didn’t help either. Christine basically struggled alone. Especially as someone who didn't have a dad, my grandpa died when I was 9, my mom was single until I was 11, this sort of lead me to not know how men should act and I didn't know how men should treat me. I married a man who, while I was going to college, pulling a double major while taking care of my disabled mom and raising our son basically by myself, wouldn't "babysit" his own child so I could attend college because he had a job. Mind you he worked at a call center and got to sit down in the AC all day, he couldn't come home and take care of our son so I could do school work. He wasn't "a babysitter" or "you're his mom, you watch him, that's your job, I did my job for the day!" Let's have kody wake up and make breakfast for everyone, and work out the details of his start time at work with an employer. Women have to do this all the time.

I think it would be hard for any child in polygamy to have respect for men. The poor example that Kody has set proves that. Logan was the man of the house when he shouldn’t have had to be!

I only have one thing to say in that is each and every one of those wives decided to have all those children knowing that Kody was the way he was but they still all wanted to please him by having all of these children that didn't have a say so in anything in their lives and I 100% blame their mothers and the reason I say that is because each and every one of those wives have said that they can leave at any time that they want to but each and every one of them picked staying with Kody instead of worrying about their children and how they were being brought up !! When you decide to stay with the man that treats you like a piece of crap but then also treat your children the same way, then I say that is the mother's fault for staying in the horrible situation that they were in and putting their kids last !!!

I 100% agree with you … there are times when kids don’t need both parents coming at them. If one parent has it under control then let them handle it however if that’s just not enough then absolutely the other parent needs to step in and double team them 😂
My husband, who as I’ve said many times is not my son’s bio father but he has been in his life since he was 2 and has helped me raise him since he was almost 3 years old- he’s 15 now, my husband has always disciplined him if he’s needed to. He’s always been his dad and that isn’t just being there for the fun times or to be Austin’s friend. It’s to help raise him to be a grown man who acts like a grown man and can become a functioning member of society. My son god bless him has never been through those typical stages …. Never the terrible 2s or horrible 3s ….. he was sleeping through the night at 2 weeks old! 2 WEEKS OLD!!! Teething not a problem never even knew he was getting new teeth until they were popping through or he’d be chewing on your finger or something …. Potty training was a breeze …. He was 100% potty trained like “big boy underwears” day and night by his 2nd birthday … he hated being wet so learning to use the bathroom at like 18ish months was nothing….. wore pull ups for 2 months at night and really he didn’t need them that long but I figured it wouldn’t hurt just in case plus we had them to use so use them up…. So really by like 21-22 months he was fully potty trained. Now he never went through those typical kid stages … not until he turned 11ish. Once he started hitting puberty did he start having an attitude and talking back, that got nipped in the bud so quick! If it was towards me I’d handle it if it was towards my husband he’d handled it however there was this one time, and one time only, while I was pregnant with my twins, he got so nasty and disrespectful and I immediately started in on him but it was very disrespectful…. I was at his bedroom door upstairs and we have a balcony in the middle of our upstairs hallway that looks over into the living room and the living and kitchen are really all one big room … now my sons room is on the other end of the hallway (other side of the house from the kitchen side of the upstairs if that makes sense) and he was loud and so disrespectful honestly he’s lucky I did punch him … I’ve never wanted to ever lay a hand on any of my kids but that day it took a lot out of me to not… anyway like I said if one of us is taking care od disciplining or at the very least saying something to himrhe other parents stays out of it well this wasn’t one of those times my husband came flying around the corner up the stairs 4 at a time and moved me out of the way and slammed the door and yoked him up and got in his face screaming … I won’t go into what was said aside from it started with “you don’t EVER speak to your mother that way and you definitely do not EVERRRRRR speak to MY WIFE that way!”
And the went on but that’s exactly how it stated but I’ll tell you what that was the one and Only time my son has ever been nasty disrespectful. Now a days if he’s got “moments” it’s usually just how he says things but even that is something he actively is working on … I’ll catch him stopping himself from saying things in a rude way but my point is that god gave us 2 parents for a reason. Raising kids isn’t easy you need a teammate. And my son, after that day never ever ever has need nasty disrespectful again. My husband put the fear of god in him. My husband is not the one to get loud and aggressive so Austin knew right away he fucked up if he got my husband losing his shit like that. Now if you’re a parent who reacts like that all the time and aggressive all the time I feel like that either makes a terrified kid OR you end up having a kid who that does nothing to. I will say that when I or my husband has had to talk to my son about his behavior he’s always made a conscious effort into trying to change the behavior ….now who knows how this baby I’m
Currently pregnant with will be when she grows up but I’m making this known now, my girls my twins, though identical, sienna is the much more relaxed chill twin whereas Miss aria jade is hell on wheels…. She’s going to be my problem child. She’s going to be the one who really tests our patients. She’s also the one who will and has taken the most years off my life 😂😂

I think Ysabel's surgery was season 16. According to Christine's recent interview with People Magazine, Kody not going to Ysabel's surgery was the final nail in the coffin.
Kody not going to Ysabel's surgery was because he couldn't be away from his little kids. He didn't have any problem being away from Truley in Flagstaff. Truley is barely older than Solomon.

I could really relate to your story. I'm quite a bit older than you are and the things in my household would be considered abuse today although some of my friends had to order since some of them had a better but we all knew if you broke the rules I was going to be bad trouble.

Now they are old men .
    And moms gone now.
Today they laugh about what their mom did. You don't mess with momma.

I felt Gwendolyn's pain when she said, "Father's are useless", when watching her video. My bio dad was beyond useless and downright abusive. My stepdad was an awesome man, and we sadly lost him almost a year go. Unfortunately, while Gwendolyn had a great mom and potentially a 1 or more extra growing up, she only had Kody for a father. I don't think Gwendolyn really meant her comment to rip on all fathers.

I really speculate that Kody really never had a real job. He sold one sign they talk about. So ok then what?? He was useless , in their book they talk how immature he and Meri were to quit a job so they could go off to go do something fun. They never really changed and used Jenelle for her work ethic. She was loyal and played by the rules of their cult.Everything is so coy about his work all the time. I don’t know it’s just my take on it. 😗
