Glyders Via Devil's Kitchen: Mountain Hike - Glyder Fawr, Glyder Fach, Snowdonia

- This hike, following the Devil's Kitchen route up Glyder Fawr and Glyder Fach, starts from a free parking area, one of a fair few, along the A5 (LL57 3LZ). The formal path begins at the Ogwen National Trust building, toilets and information can be found here, you can also pay to park if you wish to.
The path is pretty clear, leading over a bridge and bending West to the incredibly tranquil Llyn Idwal. A truly beautiful lake, named after a welsh prince. The Devil's Kitchen route can be seen from the lake, winding its' way up between Glyder Fawr and Y Garn. The Devil's Kitchen itself is a deep crack within the dark rock face, water pours over it, giving the affect of steam. There are places on this route, that require hands as well as feet, but they are not too often and it is very simple scrambling. The path is not difficult to follow but feels fun and wild.
We eventually came to a stile and wall, which we decided to stop at to have something to eat, the wind had picked up and we presumed we wouldn't want to stop on top for long. We also made a friend at this point, a lad from Berlin, who had been exploring the UK. We all headed off up to the lovely little Llyn y Cwn, a lake favoured by wild campers. Here you have to ascend up the scree slope, heading South and then South-east, it is relentless but you will soon see the moonscape like boulder field of Glyder Fawr. At 1001 meters, the mountain is the 5th highest in Snowdonia, and so rugged. Please do take some form of navigation with you if the weather is not fine because it can be difficult to pick out the correct route through the rocks and boulders.
In the distance we could see the strange, jagged rock affectionally called the 'Castell y Gwynt' - Castle of the winds. And yeah.....it was windy! Without loosing or gaining much height, we soon found ourselves on the Glyder Fach (994m), and the precarious looking Cantilever Stone. It had started snowing at this point and our travel buddy had got a bit cold so he made his way down back to his lodgings, we hope he made many more memories before heading home to Germany.
After showing off on the Cantilever Stone and drink tea, we decided to head off the mountain following the easier (ish) eastern decent. You still have to watch your footing, you can see where feet have worn the rock but I do feel this is a difficult path if the cloud came in.
After a sharp decent we turned North-west, facing the sleeping dragons spine of Tryfan, and made or way to the wall that connects the mountains. Here a quick snack and a change of coats was required as now there was driving rain and wind. We quickly followed the path down to Llyn Bochlwyd, hugging its' East shore before following the river very closely, and steeply, to the valley and path leading to the Ogwen NT, we had started the day on.
Ah, what a fantastic day, we were knackered and soaked by the end but we didn't regret a thing!

Wow how epic is this video Ceri and Kat 😍 Some fantastic transitions, and an absolutely stunning walk, with jaw dropping views 😍❤️ Definitely the wet weather gear was needed for this one at the end. The cantilever stone was out of my comfort zone, so I felt the vertigo with you Ceri. I don’t think people that haven’t had vertigo understand how it can consume you…Derren just clambers and scrambles..whereas me…I am far happier to watch you guys exploring this epicness for me. Hey both, I've only been to Wales a handful of times, but each time has been epic, it's such a beautiful part of the country. The devil's kitchen is definitely on my to camp list 😍 very similar to the lakes with awesome mountains and tarns etc. see what you mean about it getting dark at devils kitchen, ooooh feral goats too 🤣 I notice you both have osprey packs on, I too have just joined the osprey clan, and wow what a difference the Atmos ag65 has made, sooooooo comfortable ❤️ looks a good scramble to the top, dare say I would have needed a "tactical 🦆" breather too 🤣 awwww you adopted Emilio, sounds like he's had some cool adventures here 👌 that last bit to the top reminds me of red pike, such hard going 🥵 but well worth it for the awesome views from the top 😍 love the castle of the winds, very game of thrones 👌 and a nice little bit of snow too, love it ❄️ the cantilever stone is huuuuge, but nice shots from it 😍 that wall sure did you proud to grab a sheltered break 👌 for cold wet weather have a look at Paramo jackets 👍 Awesome video as always guys, catch you soon, atb Paul 🙏🏕️🏕️🏕️😁

P.s yes team Osprey here too, have tried various packs over the years, starting with Vango and Bergaus, then an Osprey Kestrel never looked back! So comfy and well made, they will last an age in the right hands. And the AG packs are a game changer for camping and distance walking, brillaint kit! 🎒 ❤ 😍

Fantastic video guys. You did very well in that weather. That is such a hard slog going up the Devils Kitchen cliffs. And then you have to get up that scree slope to the summits. Nice to see a bit of snow. I think I prefer the Glyders to Snowdon as its like you are on another planet at the top with all those piles of rocks everywhere. When you come down to Bwlch Tryfan there is always the temptation to climb up to Tryfan. After Glyder Fach the path down is very steep but I don't think there is any easier path. It's lucky you come down the mountain when you did as the weather had deteriated quite badly. Take care . Martin & Michelle 🙂 🙂

We always have so much stuff in our day packs sometimes people ask if we are camping😆 🏕. But you never can be too careful in the mountains. Absolutely loved this landscape. Rugged and remote AF!🤩. So pretty when it snowed when the two of you were at the top, that is straight out of a Christmas card😊🤗☃️. Well done Ceri for getting out on that ledge, a huge achievement for anyone with vertigo😊👍. Cheers - do you not feel happy and thrilled when you come home from such a hike in the wild? Days like this does wonders to the soul and mind and the rain, wind and tired moments are forgotten as you bask in the glory of having been there! The landscape you went through is magical and wanderlust kept growing inside me as I watched your movie! As always you are the most delightful companions in the wild and the cantilever stone was quite a moment. Incidentally there is a similar stone in Norway called The Trolls tongue (Trolltunga) which I think you would enjoy if you ever get there! Anyway - my question to you is when you will try to do some wild camping? Have you thought about doing it this season; or do you prefer to get home to warm tea and cakes at the end of the day? We do like the occasional wild camp, we only manage about 2 or 3 a year, more often than not favoring longer day hikes. Kats work can involve weekend work and early/late starts 🦇
But yes we do move a camp when we can 🏕 ❤

Wow 🥰😍 well you guys 1000% definitely deserve to be watched on big screen! Cannot begin to tell you how much we enjoyed this amazing walk/mountain climb and this is on our list if ever we are back in this area! Loved all the references to the landscape, we are forever doing this and mention numerous sci-fi films/programs we refer them too……it’s funny Lord of the Rings always comes up 😂 your weather started off great, meeting Emilio from Berlin was lovely and liked he got involved with your filming! Love your summit shout outs with the heights this is a great idea! You are so both well prepared with all your layers, Kat more so this time Ceri 😜. You were still both in such high spirits at the end although completely wet through and we know what that feels like! You are such an adorable couple, Kat’s concern for you height worries Ceri, (which I’ve only just picked up on, well done on the crab along that overhanging slate, balancing ledge) and Ceri you helping Kat across the rocky, slippy stream while filming and getting yourself across with out slipping, just lovely guys! Nice to see all the frog spawn! Loved the snow in the beard 🤭 This was right up our street guys and enjoyed every second! Thank you so much for sharing these memories you made together with us! Yes my height issues are on going, and I want to say improving, Kat was right I wouldn't have even contemplated this walk a few years ago, my jelly legs do hinder at certain times they can help at others 😀

Snowdonia National Park is so fascinating. The mountains and valley views is so epic. The mountain ridges indeed looks fantastic. Oh my adventure soul is triggered by this place. Lovely landscape at 14:00 looks like in a sci Fi movie. Those rock spikes are superb. Glyder Fawr is epic. Love the iconic castle of the wind. Great hike Ceri and Kat. Sending lots of love 💕

Oh my goodness! It looks like a challenging hike. That’s a big mountain! The terrain was tough in some parts. The wet boulders looked a bit scary!

Love the sound of a free park and only you there, great weather (to start with) and a stunning backdrop, what could possibly go wrong. Sound advice before the hard work but poor Granny Smith 😳. It did look a fantastic route up, real exciting and a great sense of achievement after completing it. Looked tough going mind and 'Babs' did really well and Amelio did well packing all that in on holiday too. The scree assent reminded my of the Mickledore route up to Scafell Pike and I bet you were happy to hit Glyder Fawr summit. After the forecast of great weather don't know where that snow came from and that was a real boulderey (is that even a word) way up to the summit and nothing wrong with crabbing on a bolder like that. After that slog I must admit I did think you were finished but a canny bit of pineapple (I start every morning with half a pint of it) must have recharged the batteries but that wet rock down must have been a challenge mind, especially that river crossing. Real pleased you both got back down safe and well, without incident and never trust the weather forecast - pizza (no spice for me) and chocolate pudding sounded real nice and very well deserved! Was great to meet a new friend and help guide him over the tricky route, loved sharing tales and putting the world to right, he was a darn sight quicker than us and wondered what the heck I was doing with all the fetch cams...Kat quickly told him to ignore me 😆
Yes the likeness to Scafell Pike and the Mickledore is uncanny, both of us commented on that during the hike! Unforgiving is what we settled on 🗻🧐
The Gopro didn't capture the wind noise, it was brutal come the final summit and route down, so glad to for the pineapple 😀
