• SIRENS - Finding the 1...
(this video is SIREN B and SIREN C)
/\/\/
On the 2nd siren - I filmed the control boxes at 10:00am. I was expecting to hear a contactor (relay) switching on-off-on-off at 1.5 second intervals to control the shutters for the "high-low-high-low" sound.
I filmed the control box @10am as well as the siren in this video. You can hear the main contactor come on at 2:48, but no noise after that. I was expecting to hear a relay going on/off/on/off to control the shutter opening and closing, but I didn't hear anything after the initial power up. So not sure where the shutters are controlled from. I suspect they are from the control box, but without a powerful relay to switch the current?
Very fast running down time on these two. Some sirens I filmed took nearly 10 minutes from sounding to slow down and stop. But there was something different about this one but wasn't picked up on the microphone. There is kind of a scraping noise that's easier to hear the slower the rotors became (like a 'whispy' type of noise on every rotation, but only when they slowed down). Perhaps this is why they stop so quickly compared to the rest.
The mrmattandmrchay siren hunt! We tracked down ALL 13 of these sirens by driving to all locations - see playlist link above.
ABOUT THE SIRENS:
Here are two sirens from a system containing 13. They are located in the neighbouring towns surrounding a secure hospital in the UK.
Me and Chay went out to find them all, which I may upload soon. It was a very interesting bank holiday Monday lol! Chay was a bit apprehensive while waiting for the first siren to sound, but loved it afterwards :)
He liked it enough to stay with me whilst tracked them all down.
It was a good day as we did other things like play football in the parks, McDonalds and see the sirens of course!
It was a mixed bag - some viewable from the street, some hidden so much that you'd never know they were there (unless it went off!), some in council depots, compounds, parks and believe it or not - in the middle of housing estates metres from houses! (would scare the living daylights out of residents if they went off at 3am!)
Some are in secure places with no access at all.
The sirens are tested at 10am each Monday.
I have recorded 6 of them in action (6x Monday@10am!) - in this video there are two of them (probably the best ones, as both shutters were working perfectly).
BY THE WAY - In reality all 13 sirens are tested together, but so that you can see each stage (start-up, running, running-down) of each siren, I have offset the sirens by two minutes (see the times in the bottom left and right in the video).
HOW THEY WORK:
The Klaxon CS8 siren.
A 415volt 3 phase motor spins two rotors on either side. One rotor is for the high tone and the other for the low tone (the one with most holes is the HIGH tone).
During the escape siren, the airflow is cut alternately to each rotor by a shutter on each end producing the distinctive high-low tones. I believe these are known as CODED SHUTTERS - hence the model name Klaxon "CS"8.
Both shutters are opened together for the all clear tone. You can just make out the high and low frequencies being produced together if you listen.
WHY ARE THERE ESCAPE SIRENS?
They were installed in the 1950s/60s with the intention of warning residents in surrounding towns and villages to remain in their homes and keep their children supervised following the escape of a Broadmoor patient.
In those days security at the facility was nothing like it is now and some would say they are no longer needed. But they do a job - "to warn". Escapes can never be "impossible", but "more and more unlikely" as security and procedures improve at the hospital.

2:48 I loved the relay click sound at initial startup :D
lmao thats my favorite siren runup
I HEAR SHUTTTTTTTTERSSSSSSSSSSSS
You should hear loud Carstairs's clicks are lol
Shutters are loud cause! The spring mech is pulled down instantly!
@@Engineer_Anton that’s not the dampers that’s the timer
Damn. I live near Broadmoor. These things can be heard from my house if you listen closely. At my old school every Monday at 10am on the dot the alarms interrupted our lessons. Back in the 80s or 90s somebody escaped from Broadmoor and my dad, who lived in the neighbouring town of Sandhurst at the time, said that the teachers had to lock the doors to prevent somebody getting in.
+Matt Sharman great to hear stories from many people about these sirens. Thanks for the comment
nice story!
@@alvynoputrabimantara7525 It's a very nice story of the people and the sirens of that area!
I’ve never understood these escape sirens
@@Mopsspoof They only really mean one thing, besides the testing.
In 1952, John Straffen, already convicted of 2 child murders, escaped from Broadmoor asylum and murdered a child living in the local area while she was riding her bike round the village..... For anyone who says these alarms would be irritating or prevent a lie in on a Monday should read up on this and other residents at the hospital. It is actually the residents around there that demanded the warning system. If the sirens irritate you, imagine living on myrtle avenue in Heathrow lol !!
GB UK I was 7 in 1957 the sirens went off when Mitchell ( the mad axeman?) escaped, we were held in school and escorted home on a coach with a policeman with a rifle.
That's a really scary thing to have happen. I hope that they have better security controls and barriers in place nowadays to prevent any escapes.
The Killer Clown go to hell you stupid BITCH
GB, what's a "lie[-]in"?
Sleeping in late in the morning rather than getting up out of bed.
Literally grew up at the bottom of the path of the woods where the biggest siren was.
And went to school at Broadmoor juniors.
Didn’t wake us up in holidays , just got used to it.
The dampers (that's what we call them in the states) are solenoid activated. The solenoids are in those boxes on the intakes. (Inlets)
You are incorrect and he is correct. The solenoids are essentially electromagnets which when activated pull down a plunger connected to a series of leavers. These are connected to the handle on the shaft of the damper and thus is opens. The damper mechanism and handle all reside in those boxes on the intakes.
I've never heard these do hi lo before. Nice video!
Bagshot is my favourite as well, and I've never realised how slow its run up stage is compared to the others.
Really nice sounding run up this one. Sadly it's no more
@@mrmattandmrchay the bashot was underpowered. Then it faild and got removed
So there's four sirens remaining
@@mrmattandmrchay how would you feel if they let you have one what would you do with one would you try and get in working or just make a stand for it
SD8
I'm pretty sure the sirens were activated with something like a old wb1400. Here in the states, ringing voltage would close the main siren contactor, but in britain, the old air raid sirens were controlled via a wb1400. Because of the size of the siren telephone box, and the fact the siren has special signals, its more likely to be something similar to a wb1400 that would have activated the system
Thank you for these videos! I grew up in Wokingham and went to The Holt School so obviously am most familiar with Siren C. Even before I looked up where Siren C was located I KNEW it was the one in Joel Park just by the sound. The slightly "gritty" high tone compared to the much clearer low tone, the distinctive sudden shut-off just leaving an echoing whine for the run-down... At St Paul's Junior there was a music teacher called Mr. Herridge who wrote compositions incorporating local sounds and he included that echoing run-down in one of his songs.
I remember the 1991 and 1993 alarms going off for real. I was in Brownies for the first one, and at school in year 6 for the second one. I remember one girl crying at school because she was so scared and one of the boys kept pretending to be a murderer which made her cry more, and the teacher just kept scolding him every time she saw him do it!
Thanks for your comment, sorry for delay in responding. About the boy pretending to be a murderer, I can just imagine that! The sirens, from a kid's perspective must have been frightening - it's not exactly a 'nice' sound I suppose. I remember the sirens from when I used to stay at my nan's house as a kid. She lived in Bracknell, and was about 1 mile from the Bracknell station siren. This was long before the internet, so finding it would have been difficult unless you were 'in the know'. If she'd taken me there, that would have frightened the hell out of me!
Was filling up here today so thought I would wait to here the siren. Sad to say this one no longer works either. Infact I couldn't hear any. Not evening faintly in the distance so I think they may have stopped using them now.
I like it when the high low intervals are offset
I like how the sirens in this video have had their flashers adjusted to where the duration of the high and low tones is equal- 2 seconds, where as on the others its 2 secs low 3 seconds high
You gotta love the old days
1:19 first Siren. 2:49 Second siren.
Fascinating story here,
So glad I've found your excellent page,
May I ask, the 2nd siren...was that a solenoid, the click??
Just before the 2nd tower footage please?
Many thanks & extremely interesting channel you have. 👌👌👌👍👍👍👍👍👍
thanks for the compliment! This is an older video this one. The bit you mean, I think this is actually the shutters at the siren opening. I was trying to film any contactor/relay sounds coming from the control boxes, but in this video ruclips.net/video/JWHd1ewfx48/видео.html you'll see that the relays are actually really small and wouldn't have produced much noise!
@@mrmattandmrchay Thanks mate 👍 that would explain.....
When you pause the video and the sound is still going
which part is this? :)
Haha lol wow
Holy crap
Siren c sounds like the hi damper was not opening all the way

Do they also use these sirens for national emergencies? Air raid weather issues?
+fireguy1000000
Bit late for a response, but oh well.
I guess you could say an Emergency....
Those sirens are located around a Maximum Security Psychiatric Hospital, famously known as Broadmoor.
If a "Patient" escapes, the sirens would go off, alerting near-by residents.
If you Google "Broadmoor Sirens" you'll get a list as long as your arm.
The m-5 siren made by Edward signaling has the klaxon symbol on the back of it
Correct me if I'm wrong but-- This was meant for that one murders escape right?
xKittyKylo Studios They were based on warning for the high security prisons and stuff. So yes your correct
Broadmoor right? I have a friend who went to primary school in around there and he told me about them testing it every monday at 10am, and if it were to go off at any other time basically the school would go into a lock down state (luckily it never did) but one of his relatives worked there and they said they experienced some interesting happenings...
Hey!!! Hiya Will! Long time no speak :) Hope you're ok. Yeah you're right about "all" of that :)
Luckily I've been working in an office near this area so had plenty of "Monday@10am" to get out and film these.
***** In 1957 they went off for real, first time i saw a policeman with a gun.
I think the scraping sound you described might be related to the strange sound on the high tone
That could also be the cover of the intake. It seems to be vibrating something serious😂😂
I live in Crowthorne and think it is a mistake to stop the sirens. A once a week test at 10:00am is a reassuring sound that if the unthinkable happens (a deranged murderer escapes) then I will be warned. I seem to recall the last escape was in 1992 or 1993?
to much money🤦♂️
Nice siren, seems loud... BUT EXTREMELY SLOW TO TURN OFF!!! (Winding down)
Good quality motors with decent bearings
The only time I remember the Broadmoor Siren 🚨 sounding to warn that somebody escaped was in the early 1990’s. This was when James Saunders escaped.
Well, the 1990s, anyway....
@@HelloKittyFanMan. Ah yes
@@katzenwagen.6799.o: The version that's not possessive.
They look like castle castings with dampers attached but I know there cs8a
i like the offset sound. :) & what does that mean when its offseting like that? what do u mean by its the Last video? r they takeing this old girl down or something?
+MRJOHNDEERE3720. :) What you mean by offset?
dankerthanclanker
theres 2 sounds & there going off at different times. one has a high sound & the other one has a low sound.
Probably just a 2 tone.
dankerthanclanker
more less ya its a 2 tone siren.. sounds cool tho. lol
Blah. Blah Blah Blah Blah Somegjgghfglthing 😠😳😵😊☺:) :D Their not takeing this old girl down! :D
Sounds like the french CCFM Siren
We've met again!
I really like the music at the beginning, what is the artist and title?
+vktrtech when I get home I will look it up for you
thank you
are they 8/16 port?
10/12
I wish they sounded like the world war ones, where they go all the way up then all the way down, i love that sound idk why
These do go all the way up and down.
CJ • Gaming & More That sound is typically reserved for air raid or attack alerts so for them to use that could get a bit confusing. On theory though they should be capable of the sound by just using the All Clear but cutting and reactivating the power every 5 seconds or so.
That was more like a 1minute 30 second offset
Sounds like a FEDERAL SIGNAL 500DH-TT witch is an American version of this model by KLAXON.
MIKE CHIESA the 3t22 was basically a rip off of these sirens. If you remove the horns and rotate it they look very similar. Both 10/12 and both have solenoids
These are not oar raid sirens they are to alert the surrounding villages of an escaped prisoner from the hospital last time someone escaped he was an axe murderer and the first man to escape strangled a little girl in the woods hence the sirens
What could an "oar raid" siren be, anyway?
Oar raid sounds scarier than an air raid, imagine loads of fishermen charging into your town and attacking people with oars
Tobberz Lol wow that would be scary
it is not a prison, it is a very high security psychiatric hospital for extremely mentally ill men. and the sirens aren't always when a patient escapes but tat is what they are designed for. they have to be tested from time to time also.
is this a sterling or a klaxton
+Avery Gustafson Klaxon CS8 - all 13 are.
all 13 are klaxon's
They should keep these. The new modern stuff is likely to fail. Plus the person who escapes could hack the modern one or they could be hacked. Unlike the old ones based on relays and simple controls they are less likely to fail and will likely outlive the new system
Problem is, the sirens and infrastructure was installed in the 1950s! Obsolete and was desperately in need of modernising or replacing. Decision was made - remove them all and leave just one on the hospital itself. I have a brand new siren hunt coming soon, same sirens (+ a few different ones) but in a different part of the UK :)
mrmattandmrchay that’s true! Like the siren can’t remember if it was A or C that had the stuck tone shutter
mrmattandmrchay I’ll be watching for that video!
Siren C sounds a bit rough
Wow siren a look like mine cool
are these gone or still there?
All but one so I hear, but you'd be lucky to hear them running anymore. Carstairs sirens are very similar and still working.
@@mrmattandmrchay Nowdays Carstairs siren H getting sicker, and Siren G s motor no longer works, only the shutter opens and closes, also Siren A got jammed open low tone shutter.. And even Siren F in carstairs get s more sicker.
UK siren nice

Question 41! :)
Thanks X-D
Why are they removing these?
they find no need any more
Pepsiboy Technostyle i dont think so they r planning to remove the outer lot exsept the main siren ''G''
Pepsiboy Technostyle well when i saw a video they had up the felle inchrarge saild all outer sirens r going as suposedly copper is stolen form the sirens
there being removed as broadmoor is having some new building added so they have an option of anther siren G or a klaxon GP range & look for the video as it explains why & lol i hope to sooner or later take more interest in em
if your planning to go to see one & hear it your best to be around at monday 10 AM lol
Siren B sounds shakey when escape tone
I'm just curious about the noisy brushes comment, surely it's not applicable to a 3 phase induction motor? Any idea what speed those run?
I was hoping the noise would come out on the video, but it didn't. Yes I know what you mean, but I could hear it quite clearly when I was there. Hard to describe but it was like a "whispy" noise on every rotation of the rotors. It sounded very much like the rotors were touching something as they were rotating which brought them to a stop (much earlier than the other sirens that I filmed).
I think it’s the dampers and solenoid mechanisms vibrating from the sound.
not fine when a shuter not works
I will build an custom siren(10/9 ratio) with 2 dampers
they are 10/12 ratio which creates the haunting sound not 10/9
Speed up the video and it sounds just like a Thunderbolt 1003A from America!
i thought it would sound more like a 3t22 as they are both 10/12 port. The reason CS8s are lower pitched is because they run on a 50z supply
@@BritishRailwaysandSirens *50hz
He 2nd sounds a bit unstable
Wow alternate wail
No
Alternate wail is where a siren is doing the attack signal with Hi Lo these sirens are not capable of doing attack as it would sound a grey warning. The sirens do escape (alternate steady if you wish) and all-clear
Oh how much that would Eco in a empty town with no one in it oh how much flipping eco
The sirens are used for wars
Nope, the ones you mean have much larger rotors like this: www.michaelsbookshop.com/sirens/ (see moaning minnie!)
Cs8s are just carters with shutters
Bloody klaxon cs8
World's slowest hi lo...
The wind down sounds terrible
Am I the only one who thinks this sounds like music?
Uhm would possibly be annoying for the neighbours lol

God, it must be annoying living in that area. You'll never be able to lie in past 10:00!
***** Yeah I didn't think of that - but what are you doing in bed at 10am on a Monday morning?? :D (unless it's someone who is working nightshift I suppose)
I thought it was everyday they tested the alarms
***** Just every Monday :)
Well, i suppose it isn't that bad then. Unless it's a bank holiday.
I'd prefer to be awoken by a siren test rather than a murderer above my bed that I didn't know was there because the sirens failed.
