  • Mr BlueSnowballMic recorded the audio for you this morning for the best quality! This video also features the TRL siren.
They were quite far away but may I say it, the sounds were lovely and helped with my development of this video.
By the way: TRL=Transport Research Laboratory. A secure site in Bracknell.
Both activate at 10am on a Monday. The sirens have been edited with a time off-set so that you can see (and hear) the stages of each siren separately, rather than everything happening at the same time.
There is one fault to report - The TRL siren "low tone" shutter does not open. It's typical that it "had to be the one facing the camera that didn't work" :(
    \/\/\
    • SIRENS - Finding the 1...
(this video features SIREN F and SIREN G)
    /\/\/
    ABOUT THE SIRENS:
Here are two sirens from a system containing 13. They are located in the neighbouring towns surrounding a secure hospital in the UK.
Me and Chay went out to find them all - this is now complete. See all my other videos here:
    • SIRENS - Finding the 1... )
It was a very interesting bank holiday Monday lol! Chay was a bit apprehensive while waiting for the first siren to sound, but loved it afterwards :)
He liked it enough to stay with me whilst tracked them all down.
It was a good day as we did other things like play football in the parks, McDonalds and see the sirens of course!
It was a mixed bag - some viewable from the street, some hidden so much that you'd never know they were there (unless it went off!), some in council depots, compounds, parks and believe it or not - in the middle of housing estates metres from houses! (would scare the living daylights out of residents if they went off at 3am!)
Some are in secure places with no access at all.
The sirens are tested at 10am each Monday.
I have recorded most of them in action (lots of Monday's@10am!) - in this video there are two of them.
    HOW THEY WORK:
    The Klaxon CS8 siren.
A 415volt 3 phase motor spins two rotors on either side. One rotor is for the high tone and the other for the low tone (the one with most holes is the HIGH tone).
During the escape siren, the airflow is cut alternately to each rotor by a shutter on each end producing the distinctive high-low tones. I believe these are known as CODED SHUTTERS - hence the model name Klaxon "CS"8.
Both shutters are opened together for the all clear tone. You can just make out the high and low frequencies being produced together if you listen.

The first siren you went to, you can actually get close to it. You can get to it via a path at top of cambridge road (which is on furze hill) and you can also get to it via cricket field grove. When you walk into it (from cambridge road side) you go south east, and there are many paths which take you that way.
There is also another way at the bottom of chaplains hill, there is a path which goes into that part of the woods (the start of the path is at the junction between chaplains hill and lower broadmoor road. When you walk in, you have to go up a steep hill, then go left and there is a path that goes to it.
I go through this path most days so you are allowed to go through here. The path that goes past the siren takes you to the cricket field.

The last time the Broadmoor Sirens were activated because of an escape was in 1991, although they were activated in 1993 because of an attack at the hospital. Since that time there has been significant investment in improving security at the hospital including the installation of a second perimeter fence and additional alarm and control systems. Despite this, many local residents say that they feel safer with sirens in their area, which is what has prompted them to be kept.
In addition to this, In 2014, the Bracknell siren was activated accidentally when struck by lightning during an electrical storm (fortunately it activated the All Clear tone). It took maintenance crews two and a half hours to switch it off!

I wasn't aware they are still available? But you also have to consider the infrastructure they are connected to. I HAVE A THEORY---
The TRL siren's high tone STATOR is jammed shut, HOWEVER, we are hearing the high tone rotor.
The overall sound of the siren is VERY tinny and quite quiet which leads me to think that the inner rotors have been directly swapped so - 10 port rotor is in the 12 port stator and vice versa.
This makes total sense to me.

      WHY ARE THERE ESCAPE SIRENS?
They were installed in the 1950s/60s with the intention of warning residents in surrounding towns and villages to remain in their homes and keep their children supervised following the escape of a Broadmoor patient (dangerous people that need hospital treatment, but are a risk to others and some of which cannot be kept in a prison).
In those days security at the facility was nothing like it is now and some would say they are no longer needed. But they do a job - "to warn". Escapes can never be "impossible", but "more and more unlikely" as security and procedures improve at the hospital.

mrmattandmrchay ah ok lol, never knew that, i only know of one siren with a range like that and it's the Chrysler Air-raid siren, i think only 3 are left in service and have been converted to electric by now

      @mrmattandmrchay  8 лет назад

+Justin Noker Oh yeah I've seen some videos of that siren - VERY spooky noise! I think it has an engine in it that they have to start first. Massive machine.
I guess 10AM on a Tuesday would mean a break out.

mrmattandmrchay yeah, 1950's Chrysler Hemi V8, i seen some dude make a synth of what they would sound like going off with accurate echo's and mixed well since they wouldn't be sounding at the same time, i can link it if you want

+HawkEyes Moments (Dave) The Crowthorne Station one did the same. I filmed it the other week (coming soon) and the guy working on the platform said it was not working for two week, but it's OK now. Maybe they 'are' being repaired afterall? One I've been to 5 times now (Finchamstead) and nothing (over the space of nearly 2 years, so that's definitely out of commission)

+mrmattandmrchay With better security at Broadmoor and the addition of a second perimeter fence, Sirens that are further away from the hospital no-longer have as much of a requirement. Also, we're just talking 1950's equipment, but we're talking using it outdoors. 60 years of Thunderstorms, Snow, Wind and Rain will have taken their toll to the point that some sirens are probably beyond repair. Changes to the landscape after 60 years will have also affected the accessibility of certain sirens too.

These are all connected to phone lines - this was 1950s/60s technology - the whole thing run from telephone exchange to telephone exchange via copper cables. I have actually done a video of the telephone line from one siren, but never got round to uploading it. Maybe I should! Someone sent me some photos of a siren control box once. If I can find it then I'll include it on the video.

Very difficult to keep up with which ones work and which don't work nowadays. At one time I was convinced that ones that don't work are simply not being fixed. But then I suppose I was wrong. Since filming them all, I've not been back for a while now.

    • @childishtombino1275
      @childishtombino1275 8 лет назад

yea but they would have problems as thunderbolts are run on 60hz so the blower, rotator and chopper would essentially be running slower. I guess you could use VFD's but that would get expensive
