Casey Neistat is a RUclipsr with nearly 12 million subscribers. He’s best known for his daily vlog series which lasted over 800 days straight until he finally called it quits. Daily vlogging existed before Neistat started doing it, but he gave the genre something it desperately needed: quality. Casey brought 10 years of professional video experience to a subgenre that rewarded amateurism. And in doing so, he helped popularize the vlog format and elevate it to a real art form.

amazing video man -- stuck around all the way to the end, really loved the storytelling :)
Hey Elliot!! I love your videos!!
Wow look who showed up here lol :o
Elliot!!!
Great breakdown of Casey Neistat's reign on RUclips 👍
Ok time out... Creating his own genre? Nah can't say that. But he did seize the opportunity, I will say that 😉
Man you are an incredibly talented storyteller. I'm so glad I stumbled onto your videos and I can't wait until you become just as big as some of these people that one day another person coming along can maybe tell your story. Love your videos. Keep up the amazing work :)
Dude I felt the same lol, I loved his video on frank ocean that's how I found him
It's kinda of inspiring that he gave so much of himself and in a way didn't it work out for Casey. He's legendary. What I took away from this is that anything is possible if you put the work in but there is a cost. I think that cost is totally worth it. I grew up in poverty as well and I think in part he was driven to get away from that as am I. I'm sure a lot of us can relate to that.
I love that he was honest enough to talk about all this in public. In this current culture of entrepreneurship where people like Gary V tell us that if we arnt working from the time we wake up to the time we go to sleep then were failures, we end up wasting our entire lives chasing this arbitrary concept of success.
I think that's a very silly mindset from Gary. The goal should be to be efficient as possible, create a plan and constantly revise that plan in order to get more work done in less time.
GaryVee is so off-puttin
Thats not what Gary believes. He only believes that idea for people complaining they aren't successful or are unhappy with their current position and not doing anything to better it. He's talking to the complainers when he says those things, he has gone over this in quite a few videos recently. Gary talks frequently about how your happiness in the ultimate success, "if you're happy, you've won". He knows many people are happier making less or working something simpler rather than making more and working to the extreme, he has said this in many videos. I don't mean any negativity towards you, I just thought I'd highlight what I think about Gary. Your point is definitely valid for a lot of the culture, I just don't think it lines up like that with Gary.
@@ConorEiffe After reading this and looking a little more closely into him, your right, I made a bit of a snap judgement. I'd only seen a few of his videos, back when the whole self-improvement genre started to take off (I.E right after the Ty Lopez here in my garage video) so I hadnt seen pretty much any of his newer videos.
@@wesleypatterson2267 Its all good man, there definitely was a point where it wasn't as clear with him when that self-improvement stuff was getting big. I think he emphasises it a lot more now which is good because it can be so damaging.
Loved loved loved this
Casey never invented chill hop, he used it to provide a chill atmosphere but the genre has existed for a long time
It's only new to America. I remember listening to a group called Fanso.
They're from Spain or something and the beats the use from Made in M and Juan Rios was so damn dope
Thank u
MultiTwiglet I’m all about some Dilla. Also Madlib and Alchemist are dope as well
Came here to say this.
@@herbalmaharaj8790 W, Nujabes too
Selling a start-up for $25 million, and becoming a household name, doesn't really qualify as destruction. The man now has the expertise, resources, and creative freedom to pretty much do what he wants. Many have gone through this kind of journey with little or nothing to show for it. Casey appears to be in a very good place now with a promising future; and can be very proud of his accomplishments.
It was a destruction for him because it took so much time he couldn't be with his family. It is more than money buddy
fully agree
He didn't sell a start-up... he sold pure HYPE and it failed, and he got a nice amount in the spoils and CNN took the hit to avoid bad press.
@@tabba1376 Yup. Beme wasn't anything but a dream
I'm glad his hipe is gone
I must be the only one who find's his vlogs boring. They're never about anything that important or interesting.
finally someone like me
They are awful. I think the only purpose they serve is as an example of good filming/editing for other people who have actual content to film.
imo vlogs inherently are boring. theres a limit to how interesting a youtubers life can get. even if they seem really interesting repetition is gonna kill it. i used to watch a bit of neistats vids cuz his edits are really cool.
@@gapehorn2917 I think he created a genre of editing that appealed and was copied by others. But the actual content was really boring.
Agreed vlogs are boring...i'm sick of the "Hi, welcome back to my channel..."
Totally agree - the ones I've seen are just "look at me, I'm a cool guy with a cool lifestyle, now I'm going to ride my cool electric skateboard and drink something cool and fashionable, it's cool being me, cool." That's it, just like a vapid advertisement for his cool lifestyle - like chewing gum, no substance just flavour.
. . . Casey has been an inspiration, being original, and unique. He has helped RUclips to grow up and come of age !
Enjoy'd the vid while eating pizza + drinking portugees vine. Off to my grandmas now.
Ole Ole sounds good dude
See ya
Hope you had a nice visit @grandmas! Happy holidays XD
Ole Ole How is she anyway
Ole Ole you should rap on some Alchemist beats.
Claiming Casey invented any music genre is such an absurd statement to me. Especially when that genre has existed for a long time through artists like DJ Shadow
bangersareforever I agree, rather than inventing, popularising would have been an appropriate description
I was just thinking about this recently. I think he certainly popularized that style of electronic music with manipulated, old soul tracks as hooks. So much so that when I watch a youtube video with that style of music in it, I know where the creator perhaps indirectly got the idea to use it. I know youtube opened their own library of royalty-free tracks and Casey keyed in a particular type of track. I think you could say he didn't invent/create/discover any of that music but he knew where to put it to good use.
exactly! Nothing original, he popularised to an audience who may never of seen or heard of it before. Like most "pros" on youtube they do nothing original.
But it worked and at times was definitely my favorite because it sucked you write into the Story.Deb👍✌
Yep, this style of hip-hop/soul/electro fusion was happening in Japan when I was living in Tokyo the late 1990's
I hope Casey watches this.
I hope so too
nah he won't waste time on this nonsense. he has better things to do than sit on youtube all day.
@@9hundred67 its just 23 mins
"he's created his own music genre' ...no, he's simply consistently borrowing music from that genre.
very well done!
This guy sounds like a person trying to do an impression of someone with a deep voice.
*he did not make 800 straight episodes, he vlogged for a year and a half. Although he did come back in season 3, 368, and the New Vlog, so maybe if you add it up then ya
No a chance he created "chill-hop" lmao wtf
He popularized
As someone who leads a pretty uneventful life, I very much enjoyed and looked forward to Casey's vlogs.
Ah well come on, now's not too late to make it more eventful!
Dude I can't even imagine how much time this must've taken to put together. Incredible work
when he said he was ending vlogs it was a sad day
Ye
I was actually happy for him. I thought his content had started to get stale before he did the cnn deal, and he never really recovered. The production quality never dropped off, in fact it increased when Dan Mace came on board, but he'd lost the spark a long time before he stopped.
Is this the guy from Silence of the Lambs?
He puts that lotion on that skin.
He is Jody Fosters older brother.
As an early 2010 Casey adopter it hurt to see him have so much success, have his entire brand stolen by every other daily vlogger, and then slowly get burnt out on the entire concept but keep forcing himself to do it.
lol didnt know casey made the word "viral" exist
Am I the only one who liked Casey’s videos more before he started daily vlogging?
ok
so much more
Nope
possibly not, if he had many fans?
I’m very impressed on this video! You did a great job portraying Casey and his legacy.
when you realize you're the 368th like
This is fascinating, I had no clue this was the case
the way casey talks about the vlog now crushes my soul. i wanted to have the hustle like he did. realizing that this type of work ethic can kill your life, just kinda kills me.
Such a lovely message! Thanks for the detailed look into his career and life.
It rubbed me the wrong way when he said, that being nice is a lot of work. I don't know where to leave this, but some people are just nice by default and have a hard time being mean. And some people need mean treatment in order to become nice.
I like him and his ethic, but those are the small details that kinda get me vaulted. Not to say, that his schedule is not even close to being healthy on a day to day basis, especially not for 800 Days straight.
My default is being nice, I enjoy it, but sometimes it is really hard! You cant be nice all the time but you need to!
@@AMalas I concurr, that some people need meaning. And sometimes giving meaning means being mean in order to strike their issues down. I get where you come from, but always being nice simply is no need. That's a neurological issue, cause being nice is not always what is due or appreciated. That's a cop out of confrontation that is simply needed to build a character. It's no wonder that #positivevibesonly made women's psyche a dumpsterfire to begin with. How do you win a fight that naturally occurs, by being nice? Set that in terms of RUclips Policies, being nice made you already lose, cause they took on bit of room from, then they take the next and the next, until you're cramped up and used up in a corner where they can control your or your "narrative". So in forms of school of life, you sometimes need to be a gaping dick or cunt in order to achieve justice, as other people are dicks and cunts all the time. Putting someone in it's place should not be nice. It's to make sure they dont cross the boundaries, when someone who really has no chill turns up and gives them the last hardship of their life. Other than that, I agree. Being nice should be default, cause being a dick is just raising to insult yourself and others, if not used as mentioned.
@@Chrisisplays then you should understand where Casey is coming from! When you lose your privacy and everyone starts demanding things from you, as basic as just a greeting to something like a selfie all the time, it would be hard to stay nice.
I don't get how it would rub you the wrong way, to be honest
@@AMalas that's the thing I don't get. You are still a human. And human's will walk over you. Giving an autograph is not even up in my list of confrontation. I am talking about obvious bullshit, people throw your way.
I know where he's coming from, but that ultimately isn't healthy to do, as we need a catalyst, or we end up taking all that harm on our relationships, cause we wanted to be nice to these random people who didn't gave two shits about you, but rather saw you as an "accomplishment".
I don't understand how you jumped to autographs, tho.
Casey is very strange to me. An OG film maker turned into RUclipsr, who was used as a CNN puppet for a while but then manipulated the system into become his own brand and enterprise . Like he double crossed everyone and rode away on a speed boat into the sunset with millions of dollars . Love him or hate him , Casey is one of the most inspirational people to exist .
This Video was quite a treat
Great video,
Learned things I didn’t know about Casey, I remember my son telling me about him in 2010 and I was thinking who is this guy and what’s this utube thing, ironically nine years later my wife & I started a art channel and are grinding out our own success.
It’s all about the timing!
Thanks
~Chuck
You actually called manhattan a character, unironically.
Friendly incest enthusiast and fellow New Yorker Woody Allen would be nodding at that.
Jeremy I believe Casey himself called NYC a character in his stories.
Mayor of the Galaxy
You're forgetting statitory ra pist
Had to stop watching when u said Casey Neistat invented chill hop... how can he do that when he never made a chill hop beat in his life
what i never understood was casey would spend all day working, and then do the vlog at night which is what made his day so grueling, but as the vlog developed it slowly became his job. Apart from meetings and other side projects what did he spend his day doing? and how did someone so good at maximising his time not find ways to do more at day? I know hes all about doing more so probably tried doing the most he could, but still?
What the fuck do you mean? "How did someone so good at maximising his time didn't do it more on the day?" Even though his vlog became a big part of his job, he still had side things to do. With that in mind, do you have ANY idea whatsoever how much time it takes to shoot and edit a video like that (usually 10 min long)?? It's a miracle that he had done it 800 times, I just can't even picture myself doing it. The only way to achieve this is how he said it went. He lost all connection to anything non work related. All he did was making videos and thinking about making videos.
He said in one video that he would usually be in business meetings non stop from 10am to 6pm.
Great video! I am a big fan of Casey and he is a big reason I am on RUclips today. He introduced me to the vlog style of filming and though I do it from time to time, those videos never gain traction for me. So I started making a video that performs and put attention to that. But if it wasn't for Casey giving me that belief that I could create content on this platform, I wouldn't be here. Thanks again for such a great in-depth video on this man that many of us look up to.
I just had a peek at your channel, and you've got some super helpful videos over there!! Glad Casey inspired you to get really stuck into it, because you are doing an awesome job!
@@theadventuresofzoomandbettie Thanks for the compliment. I am a new subscriber to your channel. Looking forward to learning more from you.
Soulful by L'indécis was a great song choice!
I can't believe I almost avoided watching all of these amazing videos because of that horrible profile Pic thing. Seriously dude, make that look on par with your content.
I agree with this man. Level up your pfp. Let it match the great content.
Juan Andres Osorio very true
Your right he needs to change it
That is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard
Can't believe he actually changed it too xD
I normally don't watch 23 minute RUclips videos from people I have never heard of. I did in this case. Keep doing your thing.
He could have been the first content house but hes too busy to maintain a quality idea.
Yea that’s why I never got into him. Just felt very superficial to me anytime I watched his videos, which wasn’t often
I think it’s funny that RUclipsrs have lied to us so much about important things they’re “announcing “, so now you have to make a point to say something is not clickbait.
I never have seen such a sexy piece of RUclips history.
I'm glad he stopped...your work, no matter how much you love it, should never absorb all aspects of your life, particularly when you have a family that loves you.
Jake, you’re alright. Thanks for the video on Casey - well done. Casey would be proud.
I have to say Casey Neistat has influenced me in a huge way. He caused me to study his film and editing techniques. Unquestionably Casey is an athlete. As I approach my 72nd birthday he’s got me thinking like a kid. I have to have the latest camera gear and I am out using it in my private investigation business and for vlogging. I also have a background in television news as an investigative producer. I Cannot imagine living his life at breakneck speed. Casey is lucky in that when he is young and the technology is available to allow him to make films like never before. I am so grateful to Casey and other vloggers help me learn filmmaking. I find filmmaking empowering. On the other hand I just despise the censoring that the social media has embraced. I just wish I was beginning my career instead of being at the sunset. But I certainly intend on going out having fun with my equipment and the crap I post.
Narrator sounds like he’s been inhaling sulphur hexafluoride
I only have like 9 subs but man I started all of this because of this man. He really inspired me to give it a go no matter what. Great vid man. I don’t think I’ve ever watched a vid without skipping through in a while.
Lonely Champions I only have 38 subs and Casey inspired me to start doing videos too... sub I’ll sub back
Just ran into this video on RUclips. As soon as I heard that voice I knew exactly who this was. Keep grinding out the channel brother!

I didn’t want to like this for whatever reason but it was awesome. Well done man!
my god that intro = legendary
The beginning seems almost a copy paste word for word of what he said in his life story. I know its different, but i watched his vid right before this one and it is so similar.
Absolutely love everything I’ve seen on your channel. Your curation is at level “youtube professor of cool” - quite the high honors!
Only vlog I’ve ever watched. No one is nearly as good
Ben Brown was great back in the days, that wa until he broke up with Nicole and got into psychodelic drugs, and spiritualism with his new girl.
Love the video but chill-hop or Lo-Fi has been big since before Casey.
You skipped his whole time with Tom Sachs.
#ClintonCashCasey
Yeah I was furious and stopped watching him for that reason. :( Nice video and tribute here though.
"overthinking the process will kill any carrier in the creative space"
opening line was hilarious, instantly made me like the video, like actually gave u a like hhhhahaha
So happy I found this channel. Started with the Rick Rubin and hip hop artists, but the deeper stuff about Burnham and Casey Neistat, damn. This is great content.
Great storytelling....Sundaymorning viewing approved....
Hey good video what underwear brand do you wear when you run?
You earned that subscribe, I watched down to the last minute.
you forgot about georgie
Really really good video. This must have taken a ton of work. Excellent choice of material and moments to build the story. I'm a big fan of Casey, and your take on him and his channel ring absolutely true to me. I don't think there's any higher praise to give a documentary.
love your vids bro, watched casey too for a long time great to see him appreciated
Bro your editing has gotten so much better with every video
I like his work He's just hard to watch.
be happy is the most importand - not get more viewers.
Amazing vid Jake! The amount of time it must have taken to put this together ... I can really appreciate. Casey’s been great to follow and glad he’s prioritizing his fam. Was thrilled to get to see him earlier this year
Did you look into his family history to look for inbreeding which should explain his facial and body deformations? He has all classic morphological facial features of in bred European and English royalty. I believe one is called "the Hapsburg lip or jaw)
I think a lot (ALOT) of people pretend spending time with their children!

How you haven’t blown up yet? Amazing videos, looking forward for new ones as always.
How he could come up every day with a new idea?
I mean what was the content of each video?
I thought Casey made this since so many basic drone regulations were violated in the opening scene. Not good.
Great video! You say you have a small channel but I have 2,500 subs so seems like you are huge LOL. Seriously great vid!
Jake zeeman really knows how to make videos enjoyable to watch all the way through.
Casey: "I work so hard I only sleep four hours a day". Doctors and sleep researchers across the world: "Bullshit"
Man.. You just..... You just dont understand. I worked 120 hours in a week several times in my early days in printing... This isnt made up. If anything its understated.. (20 hours a day for 6 days.)
I always thought it was his surly wife that destroyed his spirit and want to work at vlogging...Hmmm....
I also felt his wife was not supportive. She is the opposite. He just needs to find balance like any hard working individual.
Aside from the "Casey invented Chill Hop" instead of saying that he applied it in a unique way this was a inspirational video. Subbed.
Well put together!
But at the end of the day you missed out on him being rich - which led to him being able to live in Manhattan and shoot videos every day.
If the average Joe clubs daily in a poor area it wouldn't be that visually appealing or interesting to the masses.
Nice piece of work
No, he definitely mentioned him selling a doc for 2 million.
grossly understated Tom Sachs studio, and the exposure/networking that go with working in one of the most successful contemporary art studios.

i’ll never forgot when i was 10 years old on casey’s 800 vlog run i would watch him everyday right after school when i my grandpa picked me up. my grandpa started watching the vlogs with me and to this day he watches every video he drops.

This video was extremely engaging and I learned a lot about how Casey accomplished so much.
You've really studied up on Casey-- a story well told. Casey jumped on a train, and embraced every adventure along the way. His only focus was on DOING. His channel is addicting which is why I only watch on occasion, and even had to unsub from his channel. He's one to be admired, that's for sure.
Thanks Casey, now every douchebag walks around filming themselves doing random tasks all day thinking the whole world needs to see it & uses the word “influencer” nonstop.
20:16 lol, did he forget he has another child? That tracking shot, in the beginning, is amazing tho.
JZ BACK AGAIN! This was siiiick
Casey created chillhop ummm 🧐 no he didn’t. And he wasn’t the 1st to vlog in that nostalgic style. Fun for Louie used the same technique and he did daily vlogs way before Casey.

“The term viral movie was coined talking about that video” ....yeah, sure.
