I’ve a 10 year old Hymer Exis that I bought from new and today the warning light came on as well as a warning stating the air bag fault. It looks like I’ll be going down the same road as you so thanks for the heads up! Interesting there another blog by a chap who’s had the same problem but in his case the repair was over £200 and a new unit £300 so I’m glad I found your post. Thanks again.

Hi Bob, I spoke to you briefly at Poolsbrook country park recently. Yes I had this same issue with my Fiat Ducato. Just did exactly as you have. Removed ECU sent to crashdata & refitted after reset. I also fitted a new battery before I turned the key again to prevent the low cranking voltage issue that causes it. I also believe manufacturer should replace or repair these as a warranty claim as they are clearly not stable. I know of no other vehicles that suffer airbag ECU faults due to low battery voltage. Thank heavens for crashdata. A great company. All the best Bob. Enjoy your uploads.

thanks Bob. Just to share an issue i had with you and your viewers, I had a glow plug warning issue on my van, not visible in the engine bay , which is same age as yours 69 plate. Relay is a nightmare to find. but it is there. Located on the passenger side of the van between chassie rail and outer wing (rhd) easiest way to get to it is , steering full lock to the right, remove enough bolts from the wheel arch liner to allow your arm through with a ratchet and 10mm socket. relay is located high up toward the headlight area, it is a bit awkward. Slide back the RED part of the multi pin connector. the plug will disengage from the loom. then the single nut can be undone. the relay will then be free. it is a sod to get to , but worth the effort. i had to fit a new relay to my van and the message dis appeared after start ups. From cold , there was no message , but once the engine was fully up to temp ,next restarts of the engine the message would appear after about 40 secs of engine running / restart and glow plug symbol would flash for about 20 secs. Relay is about £50 on ebay. I can offer part number if someone needs it , but the old relay is not to hand at the moment. I was just out of warranty as well. Prior to this , i had checked the fuses and they were good. Last thing i wanted to do was change a glow plug, as access is a pain, the relay was the next cost effective option.

Same thing happened on ours, it’s a known issue by fiat but they won’t acknowledge it needs a recall. We used northern auto tech to reset ours and they gave a full printout showing at the time the ecu failed the battery dropped to 11.2 voltage, the battery had been tested and it’s 98% efficient so dont rush out to change your batteries. We found the Votronic standby (trickle) charger had blown a fuse so whether this was in fact a voltage drop or a surge is debatable. Trickle charger working fine now, battery good and ecu still ok 🤞. Be interested to know if those with failed ecu also have alarm/trackers fitted, just a theory I have atm. Nice video Bob, that space is not meant for us chaps!

Not same issue but we had a persistent airbag warning light after an incident with a USB cable that became tangled in the steering column when we were going round a roundabout. Slight panic and an over zealous tug and turned out we had wrecked the steering module. It was safe to drive but It was a costly fix and we are super careful to route charging cables well away from the steering column now.

Excellent video Bob. I had the Airbag light and followed your instructions to the letter. The module was turned round by Crash data in 3 days, fitted and error gone. They gave me an error code which was high voltage from the battery which made me think when plugged into mains don't, like I did, switch on the ignition to setup your Sat Nav etc ready for next day. If your battery charger happens to click in at 14.5 volts it will trigger and error. Low battery does same.

Hi Bob, I had a low battery warning on my Land Rover. Turned out it was just my battery, although it was only 3 years old. Since then I’ve purchased a 12v digital read out. It plugs into a cigarette lighter socket, gives you 2 usb sockets and a constant read out of your battery voltage. Usually about 12.4 prior to start up and 13.9 during charging. Only a few pounds from Amazon but gives great piece of mind.

I’d come across the module when fitting some things but hadn’t realised it was the airbag one - the modules do seem very susceptible to voltage drops (which of course is expected) - I thought it seemed an odd place to locate it as if you split something could easily get in there.

Hello Bob, I was viewing the comments on Travel Trolls video about the same issue you had with the airbag modular and saw your comment about the airbag light coming on again after crash data had reprogrammed the modular, I ask this because mine also came on at the weekend at it’s booked in with my mechanic on Thursday, luckily for me we purchased the van last year and took out a four year gold warranty so hopefully the cost for new and fitting will be covered 🤞🏻
This is annoying given that Fiat must surely be aware of this especially when it’s classed as an MOT failure and a serious safety issue if ignored if driven and the amount of people having the same problem. Look forward to your thoughts on this. Thanks, Mark.

Advice from them was: Take your vehicle to an approved Fiat Professional garage to plug into diagnostics which will be chargeable. Depending on the code there may be some goodwill on their part. And then, only if you have had your vehicle serviced by an approved dealer from new will they consider not charging for repair or replacement. In the end you need to have paid Fiat extortionate prices for servicing to be considered for any goodwill.

Eventually persuaded Fiat to give me a new module even though it was out of warranty and was fitted by Fiat Professional main dealer but I had to pay labour charges.
A very common fault and a good tip is let the module warm up before starting the engine.

Hello Bob, very interesting video. I have an identical issue. I have a 2015 Peugeot Boxer based motorhome, I had the same airbag warning as you described and had the nearest dealership to me, look at it. Robins And Day in Sale. They carried out the repair back in Feb 2023 at a cost of 169.00, today 20+ months later the fault has returned. I,m convinced it's due to the recent very cold snap and resulting battery voltage drop. I think like you I will return it to the same dealership, but this time request a brand new unit, for the sake of having a warranty. I have not contacted them yet for a quotation because it isn't going on any trips right now, so I can wait until it is milder weather. Regards Ian

The earliest they can see me with a curtesy vehicle available is early Jan 25. A fee of 150.00 for diagnostics + 19.99 ins for hire vehicle, then whatever they choose to charge me ontop. I expect similar to your bill plus a little for inflation.

Hi Bob having seen a few Vlogs on this issue I did some research and found 9 companies in the uk that do the module resets, I called 6 of them and on average they do 15 units a week and in winter that can go up to 45, it’s not just batteries that cos it, putting jump pack on with the ignition turned on can spike the system. Should we think about getting the Motorhome manufacture’s to make representations to VOSA under safety recall as it is a safety issue.

@@BobEarnshawMoHo OK so I spoke to Fiat Customer Service UK today. They said I had to take the vehicle to an Authorised dealer for diagnosis and repair. A cost reimbursement request could then be submitted. So I spoke to the nearest authorised Fiat dealer who tells me I can take it down for a diagnosis at a cost of £125 plus VAT. The next available appointment is on the 26th June (6 weeks from now). They also warned that sourcing the parts from Fiat could involve a long wait as parts supply is terrible at present. And they said I would have to pay for the repair in full and take the reimbursement request up with Fiat myself.
