This is why I love Steve Caballero. The guy has great business sense and such a humble character. Loved the Street Cab Days he was ripping. Just got a pair of halfcabs too.
BS! Im old with fat feet, these are the only shoes I used to skate. Now you can't even walk around in them without them falling apart (pros also). Im done with them.
as a sneakerhead when i saw steve cut a full cab and duct taped it, i instantly fell in love with the cab series altho it does suck to hear how vans treated steve tho
I've bought mine back in March. It's been 8 months and they've been holding out performance and quality. It took me about a week to break em and since then they've been good. They don't look new but they look like they been used for what they're meant for and still are in good looking shape. Still going strong as I text this.
My #1 most favorite pair of shoes, even before I started skating I loved them. I still remember the black and purple pair I bought from a vans outlet back in elementary school.
I only had Caballero decks in the 1980s here in NYC area. I even got a pair of Jordan 1's in the 1987 because the Bones Brigade all wore them in the Animal Chin movie. Back then they were considered "retro" and the Jordan 4 was the hot $100 sneaker a crazy amount to pay for a sneaker then ($225 today). All the skaters wore either Jordan 1's, Converse Dr. J, or Adidas Patrick Ewing. Vans were the first skate shoe you got but they were too common for NYC skaters in the late 1980s. And Vision Street wear shoes were considered the shoe worn by 14 year old kids whose mothers bought their skate shoes. And khaki or army green cargo pants were a mandatory. Only weirdos wore tight jeans and low top sneakers to skate. LOL. Looking back now it's sort crazy to see everyone wearing Vans. Hip hop kids, punk rock kids, techno kids, kindergarten kids, hipster Fixie bikers. The back to school line at the Vans store is out the door each year now. Back in 1980's all of these people would never wear a "skater shoe".
Something skateboard related that Rodger doesn't remember? Granted it was a Vans ad from when he was in diapers. The man is a skateboard encyclopedia. Check out the series he did on RUclips for Skateboarder Magazine called Raiders of the Archives, it's great stuff if you're into skate history and skate hoarding.
I could have stole Cabs air Jordan’s in 1987 when they came to Yuma AZ. Kevin Harris took us skating around town and took us to the hotel while Cab and Lance went looking for a ramp. His Jordan’s were right there, no one would have noticed if I slipped them into my bag. I’m 50 now and can honestly say I’ve never took anything that I didn’t work for, but that was the only time I ever contemplated taking something. Seems like yesterday.
First shoes I saw people cutting were Airwalk Enigmas. A few of us got Half Cabs for Christmas when they first came out way back when. Airwalk was on the way out by that point and Etnies were getting traction. I'd still rock any of those to this day.
I got my first Vans in 77 too. I was 6. Just moved to Orange, CA in first grade and the cool kids had the brown high tops and the red and blue low tops. Slip ons were also a thing. I got the red and blue pair on a surprise visit to the Vans store one night. YOu could only buy them at Vans stores and those were scattered around the area. Customs were easy to order at the store as well. It was many years before I saw people in other states wearing Vans and I still wear them. Got the camo bottom high tops right now.
I had a pair of half cabs twice. From what I remember, they were some the best skate shoes ever. Also had the chucalow several times and I held them to be the best shoe ever until I finally decided to try other shoes. Lakai was first, then adidas, Emerica, Fallen and then Nike. Had the Lakai Manchester’s, flared, and this other one I don’t remember. I had the adidas campus. I had some emerica Reynolds 3 I think. Slash fallen’s in red. And then I finally got the pair of shoes I keep going back to. My main, the Nike Janoski in grey, black and university red swoosh. I also got some team edition 2’s. I later also got some adidas adi ease and these are also shoes I go back to. I tried going back to vans when I bought chucalows again but they hurt my pinkie toes. Then I tried chima pros and they were good until the insole died in like 1 month and that was mostly using it as a regular casual shoe not skating it. I like the design it just kinda sucked in terms of the insole and it also got loose so my foot moved around while wearing it. I also got the chima pro 2’s and I like this a lot until I started skating them, they were too heavy. I tried the Gilbert Crockett ones and they too were heavy. I got to accustomed to the lighter more snug feel of adidas and Nike so it’s kinda hard to go back to vans but I am glad I did skate vans in the start. They were good when I started and wasn’t skating down stair sets. I will still buy vans but not to skate and although the insole has improved in their shoes, for my feet, they are not as good as what the Janoski has. I recently bought some Janoski RM’s but I have yet to skate them but I get the feeling they may be the best insole yet.
The 20th anniversary ones were built incredibly… still have a pair of all blue dirty donnies .. I hate the new half cab “skate classic” …love the toungue strap but hate how stiff they have become .. the insoles also hurt my feet … been still rocking the pro classics instead
Half-Cabs are pretty popular in Japan, and I can usually find a pair at any place that sells Vans (everywhere). Just bought a new pair last month, and they feel great.
The first time I skydived I was wearing a pair of 1st Gen Rowleys and when they told me to swing my feet out the plane I tucked back in and cranked the laces down so they wouldn't blow off my feet.

They’ve done everyone dirty that they work with
Steve is such a soft spoken guy. I kinda wanna hear him read books on tape.
