Episode 1: The Full Cab takes us back to 1989 when Vans and skateboarding legend Steve Caballero introduced the first Vans signature skate shoe, the Caballero. In true DIY spirit, skateboarders saw a chance to reimagine the silhouette by cutting down the high-top padding to better meet their needs, pushing the boundaries of progression and creative expression. The Half Cab™ was born.
This year, Vans celebrates skateboarding’s creative spirit and three decades of an icon that’s influenced culture both within skateboarding and beyond, with Half Cab™ product drops and many exciting collaborations throughout the year.

I hope Cab starts seeing royalties from these shoes again, I remember him talking on the Nine Club about how he has been shafted over the last few years.

How is it timeless when the modern half cab is about as far away as you can get from the original? The new half cabs suck.
@[Mantis.cyber] xvs1[UNIT] They do come in red, they're just out of stock since the entire world's production of materials is still finding it's footing. Basically every Vans shoe right now only comes in black, blue or tan. Also the other guy saying they suck, nah bro, they're pretty solid.

@@crazycarlsadventures5983 They're not terrible, I won't buy another pair though. Way too much padding, the soles are too thick and they take forever to break in and even then they're super stiff.

I love Half-Cabs, an undeniable classic, but I wish they would’ve kept producing the original (“Full”) Caballero as well. Imagine them in an olive/grey color-way. 😅
Me too. As much as I like my Half-Cabs, I prefer a legit high top. Are Full Cabs not available at all?
@@leofriedwald9901 You can find limited edition/anniversary editions fairly easily on eBay and whatnot, but they aren't widely available in the standard lineup like the Half-Cabs are. These reissue versions don't have the same black/grey colorway though, they're black with white laces/sidewalls/stiching/etc. I think I've seen the maroon/grey ones reissued though.
@@leofriedwald9901 Over the years, Vans has produced Full Cabs and even Low Cabs (aka Cab Lows), but the only shoe they consistently produce is the mid top.
This is super cool, my wife works with his brother, Robert Caballero and whenever I go volunteer he has all these cool stories about Steven. Is crazy how long he has been skating!

I bought my first Half Cab a months ago. It's like my dream shoes. For a non-skater, Half Cab is a comfortable shoes. It feels like my ankles been supported.

Love these history lessons. This all happened when I was just a kid. There wasn’t even skate shops near me at the time. Antique stores had, “new school”, boards for sale. I think the only shoes we knew about were airwalk ones at the time. But then in comes the HalfCab. It was so iconic. Every kid who skated wanted a pair. I think Mike Carroll in his white ones with black soles sold us all. I recall that exact mag ad you showed in the video. It was like a style, little wheels, baggie dockers, HalfCabs, and a sweatshirt. It was like this transition from grunge to hip hop that was happening. The HalfCab bridged that gap. You had Fred Gall with a Kirk Cobain haircut with baggie cutoff jeans in HalfCabs. MC doing the dockers/chinos. I’d love to see Vans reissue some of the more obscure ones that came out, why not? All they did was a 92 tan and blue. Boring. Reissue that classic white with black sole or the purple with black sole, or the Turquoise ones. That’s all in right now anyways, don’t miss the opportunity to do it!

I still have some old US made Full Cabs somewhere and they are not thrashed! Gotta show them to Cab.....
I skated back then and still today, but the first shoe was the airwalk enigma, everyone cut that shoe down. I also cut down vans old school highs because there was no old school low back then. I did have a pair of full cabs in 92 that I cut down, those were the best skate shoes. I still skate in half cabs now, I really like the new redesign.
I hate the new redesign. The "pop cush" insoles suck, they're stiff, they're uncomfortable. There's WAY too much "support". I've been skating for 36 years and the new Half Cabs are the worst shoes I've ever skated. Half Cabs used to be great shoes, the new ones are nothing like the original. It's an entirely different shoe. I wish I could get my 75 bucks back and buy better shoes.

Cab is the man and the Haf Cab is the best skate shoe of all time and is only rivaled by the Jordan. Not even Jordan had the same model his whole career. It's pretty incredible what Cab has accomplished.
Cool video. I remember cutting my airwalk disaster just to imitate these guys, imagine this was in venezuela around 93. I always dreamed having a pair of vans caballero, and still they looked awesome.
I seem to recall that by the timne Cab & Vans got te half cab to market the street scene had moved on from Vans. No matter, I had em, cut em down like everyone else and went on to ride half cabs to this day. Cab is a ruler, style & power. Vans fam forever, RIp Grosso XXX

I got my first pair in like 2012 , they have changed so much since then … the pair I had the insoles were glued to the shoe . Prob one of the best pairs I had but it did get soggy after a good month of skating …. The pro classics I did like just not as good as board feel with the new insoles … but the new “skate classics” are just to slim compared to the older models .. the tounges are less puffy , the backing of the shoe is too stiff and the new insoles hurt my feet .. I did just get the new 92 classics Natas/ ray barbee too and they are built different as well

Did they change something with the latest version of the half cab? I bought one in my normal size and it was soooo f'ing narrow it was uncomfortably tight on the sides and top of my feet - but the toe length was fine. Also my heel kept slipping up and down on the rear of the shoe, so despite how tight it was in the other dimension it was super loose around the heel. Very strange, and big disappointment.

How you gonna be a Vans historian and use terminology “they beat us by a minute” when describing when etnies beat them for the first pro shoe. I feel like a historian should have the actuate dates for history purposes.
The new Half Cabs are hot garbage. They're stiff, tight, uncomfortable and restrictive, the "pop cush" insole fucking sucks and they have way too much padding. The padding is my main gripe. There's so much padding they're uncomfortable. They're nothing like they used to be. If they came out with an original half cab without all the gimmicky shit I'd buy it. Loved them back in the day...but it's not the same shoe anymore.
