That's because RUclips erased all previous comments, I saw this documentary 9 or 10 years ago and my original comment is no longer available. Did anyone else notice that the so called EOS SAPIENS starting after 1:24 & 1:25:19 mark looks exactly like the " Jelly alien ?"
Too bad the overall design of everything is cheap and undersized. The ship is too small, the hydrogen bag is too small, and trying to show holograms to a race of beings who are BLIND was just stupid. The planet looks like a desert, and no oceans means no ozone layer, so the surface is bathed in ultraviolet light. So, while an interesting concept, I think it was poorly executed.
Does anyone else remember the INCREDIBLY detailed tie-in interactive that Discovery used to have on its website, where you could actually guide Ike through his journey on Darwin IV? It's too bad that it was lost around the time that Adobe pulled the plug on Flash, it had so much information that explained a lot of the lore in this documentary.

They make the Eosapiens out to be really creepy in this documentary. Anyhow, the alien lifeforms on Darwin IV are quite alien looking, different enough from Earth life to be aliens but exhibit familiar behaviour. At the start when the narrator said that we are the invaders, I imagined myself sounding like a stereotypical Martian.
Ive seen this se eral times. Never gets boring and a bit to my embarrassment...the writing, direction, pick one was brilliant in one aspect, in particular, that I only recently noticed....Ike and Leo 'look' and, certainly, have physical qualities like the only sentient life on Darwin 4.....they share great sensory equipment, and they both 'float'. Cool juxtaposition.
I know this is an older video, but I'm glad to see alien life depicted as it most likely would be. When I see aliens depicted as humanoids, I just think "sheesh, no way" 😒👽
I believe life is abundant throughout our galaxy, statistically. But, the distances between living worlds is probably astronomical. Out of thousands, maybe tens of thousands of alien worlds, only a precious few support life. Intelligent life is probably rarer still. Technically advanced species the rarest of all.
A lot of organisms emit radiation and discard material that they themselves can't perceive. There are plants that are bioluminescent and they can neither hear nor see each other.
10:47 the scientist he's saying that life on earth is a rarity is absolutely correct. Our existence is so miraculous as to almost impossible. I believe life exists out there, but it will also be just as miraculous.
I have seen this clip some years ago. (about 5 to 7). And since then I searched for it. But I didn't remember the name. And I never found it. I am so happy to see it again.
The odds of a species looking exactly like us are pretty freaking small. Consider for instance convergent evolution on Earth. The forms of spiderlike beings, and various other insects, have appeared multiple times. Fishlike structures have appeared multiple times. Flight has appeared multiple times. Handlike appendages have also appeared, but mainly in related mammals. Eyes and venom have appeared over and over again. Point being that, yes, there are likely to be a whole bunch of similar animals if the same parameters exist, atmosphere, bodies of liquid etc. Life can theoretically appear where there is not water or is using our own types of chemistry. It also doesn't necessarily need to be like Earth to be life bearing. We're simply going off of what we have here. An important factor for consideration, is the fact that the Earth's oxygen is not natural, that is to say, it's not abiogenic, oxygen is a highly reactive and toxic element that as the theory goes, originally was produced in vast amounts by microbes. In fact early earth's atmosphere was being saturated in methane, it would've smelled like rotting eggs and rotting garbage and sewage from the bacterial mats in the ocean. But eventually microbes evolved to produce oxygen as a byproduct, eventually over millions of years farting out enough to saturate the earth's oceans beyond what any surface iron could absorb and killing most of the other microbes. This is a big thing nobody ever seems to address in science fiction, it's entirely plausible that alien worlds would be bereft of oxygen beyond the most minimal trace amounts. Had those microbes not evolved to expel oxygen as a byproduct, we'd have no O2 in our atmosphere beyond the traces usually from breakdown of H20 but notice earth's atmosphere isn't filled with hydrogen either.
When you think about how absurdly huge the universe is, and how many billions upon trillions of stars are out there, odds are good that there has to be at least a handful of planets out there capable of supporting life. Whether that life is sapient is another matter entirely.
Why don't they start looking on this planet for the unknown highly advanced civilization, underground/water, its much easier and far more likely than in a dangerous lifeless place called space...
For some reason the clicky thruster adjustment sounds of the robot probe blimps (like at 13:02) lives rent free in my head and I think about them without even registering where they came from
"If you're not interested interested in discovering aliens but are instead more interested in self-preservation as a human being, then you're not human" That has to be single-handedly most idiotic thing anyone can say that it should be only considered as clinical idiocy
No. Any species that over-specialises almost inevitably becomes an evolutionary dead end. We need to be exploring in as broad a manner as possible, in every field. The number of times seemingly inconsequential data from one field have meant important breakthroughs have happened in another are too numerous to list. Inquisitive is good.

Other alien life, that's alien to us, don't forget, were aliens to all others, we're weird looking to them, I think we'll find the reality is, most alien life will look very similar, the animals, the intelligent beings, bipedal, a torso, 2 legs 2 arms and a head, granted, the head design will vary, but generally the planets will be similar and the creatures that live there will be recognizable.
Absurdly badly designed robots lacking all-around (4π stereoradians) vision and intelligence enough for such an important mission. Also absurd that they try to interact directly and not by using a proxy slave robot extension instead.
