    I've been watching a lot of Z-cam footage recently so i could tell right away which is ZCam. Cinema cameras definitely got its own flavour that can't be match with a DSLR. Dope video.

    Z-Cam has way less sharpening, image looks much smoother and more organic.
    A7sIII looks quite digital in comparison but has better dynamic range.

      I think you mean better roll off ... you can see more of the blue in the sky the coulds and shadows with the Zcam .... Also look at it on a test chart. The Zcam has better DR.

    Both cameras produced beautiful imagery but I definitely agree with your evaluation. If I had directorial control on set and more time to compose each shot I would choose the Z Cam every time. However if it were a run n gun situation like event coverage or anything past sunset I would then select the Sony without question. Unless you’re short on funds keep them both and don’t sell either. Best of luck in 2021

      Same. But I also shoot with an a7iii so can tell immediately what Sony footage looks like vs others. Highlight roll off as well as contrast are key differences. Plus the zcam just got that sauce I been he said it in the video lmao if you do this professionally you'll just be able to tell which is the cinema cam from the first shot. Great video here though!

    Thanks for your comparison. I was thinking the cameras were the opposite because camera B has a little green tint. I was surprised when you said camera B was the Z-cam and the Sony did not have the green tint. Both look nice but I am drawn to the Z-cam footage for the look and feel of the footage. Like you said, I think this could be drawn out of the Sony to some extent. The IBIS and AF useful tools and hard to pass up.

  • @MikeMena

If you love canon "magical" color and canon user, you'll love sony more, cause z cam is more green in this comparison, and we canon shooters hate greenish skin tone. Or green tint.

      @@MacOlink science would disagree. a raw data feed from the sensor is going to be the exact same 1s and 0s regardless of what camera manufacturer puts the chip on a substrate. i'm not talking raw codex, i'm talking uncompressed RAW data. at that point, the only variable is the sensor, which are pretty much all made by sony anyway. There's no processing happening to the data. What exactly do you think a camera is doing to the data stream that gives it this "sauce" you think it has?

      @@homewardboundphotos Hey you're clearly knowledgeable and props to you for that--but curious as to the point you're trying to prove or what you're looking to gain or change via your attitude and input? Your point of uncompressed data = uncompressed data is great, but how does that translate to the real world? Is there a simple shift in workflow I can implement to get a mirrorless camera to achieve the same look out of a camera like the Z-cam if uncompressed data = uncompressed data? Genuinely curious because if you can offer a useful tip that I can implement into my workflow, I'd love to know. Thanks in advance.

  • @VidHeadz
    @VidHeadz 3 года назад +2

    Nice vid, but I see more blue in the Z-Cam footage. I owned a E2 a little ways back and decided to go another way (Loved the E2 though). It is easy to spot @ 4:34. The Sony is more warmer and the Z-cam is more cooler in this instance. Wondering it you just hit the blue a bit in your footage there how would it fair? It seems that it is just a color tweak away. I would like to see how you color corrected and added your grade to both. I'm a predominantly PP user so I know Z-Cam has a Plug-in that basically color corrects in a few clicks. Wondering if this is available in your NLE of choice?

    • @MacOlink
      @MacOlink  3 года назад +1

      I agree, Z footage has a cooler tone to it. I shot the same settings on both cameras, and I noticed the difference while shooting. BUT I wasnt trying to match the cameras. A couple color tweaks like you said and the cameras would match very well imo. But I really wanted to show how the images compare with a normal Rec 709 look applied. I graded the clips manually by adding contrast and saturation back into the images and adjusting some levels here and there. Nothing crazy. I edit in FCP and I used the Z Cam plugin when grading but Ive had a mixed experience with this. I no longer use that Plug in because it does some wonky things to the footage and Ive noticed I can get better results when I grade from scratch.

    • @GeddesKing
      @GeddesKing 2 года назад +1

      exactly, i think the comparison was bias to sell the zcam as the better image. i too loved the zcam footage, however i have the a7siii and may be bias as well to the zcam footage, however the color shift between cameras, looks suspicious and deliberate, the colors are too close, plus too which color profile was the sony, the sony has some of the most color tweeks built in, on every picture profile. I would choose the SONY any day over the ZCAM, plus the image is sharper, even that can be a difference in lens and filter

    Your one of the very few people I’ve subscribed to. Just like your overall approach. I’m finding a lot of the “glam-reviewers” have lost touch with the reality of the hustle. I’m trying to make my dollar stretch as far possible, but also trying to improve my game. Nice to see someone working the same angle. PS - I’m so used to working with IBIS in my A7RIII, I’d like to make moves on the Fx6 (no IBIS) but I’m worried about the jitters when using lenses with no optical stabilization. How did you find the ZCam in terms of working with a camera with no stabilization?

    • @MacOlink
      @MacOlink  3 года назад +1

      Thanks! That means a lot. The best way to deal with no IBIS is to make the camera heavier. You gotta rig it up. That’s why my Z Cam build was so big. The bigger and heavier the rig, the less micro jitter.

    Z-Cam E2-S6: WIN, First of all if we're talking about budget and cinematic, Z CAM in the image is smoother and solid with better focus and more details in the image.
    Z-Cam E2-S6: with a good LUT or Color Grading adding more contrast at the image is enough.
    Z-Cam E2-S6: ABOUT BUDGET, ABOUT IMAGE, ABOUT CINEMATIC LOOK, ABOUT FOCUS.... Z-Cam E2-S6 is better people
    If you can see the Sony Image has a little bit more contrast and that's it.

    Was sharpness all the way down on the Sony? Also, compare the autofocus and low light and I think it would swing toward Sony by a wide margin. Depends on the use I guess. For run and gun, the Sony is hard to beat even if it doesn’t look quite as nice. Good video! I use FCP also and with the slog, I apply the SONY LUT first, then do minimal grading after. The SONY LUT can be applied right under where you would set it for REC 709 in the information panel. Can’t remember if that’s built in or something I downloaded? Saves a ton of time grading though and can be batch applied to all clips in one click.

    Did you shoot 4K Crop or 4K scaled down in camera? That will also have a big difference on the E2-S6. That being said, why not just shoot 6K Prores if you are doing the full project and just deliver 4K. There are fairly large benefits to do doing this as you get a magmatically color lossless image in 4K then.

    • @MacOlink

      On my S6 I shot full sensor 4k. I dont need the 6k resolution and Id rather keep file sizes down. Just personal preference.

    now wack a black promist filter on the a7siii and see the difference, I do agree there is some special sauce about the zcam although I feel the a7siii with a 1/4 promist filter is hitting as similar tasting sauce

      If you watch my “A7siii test footage” video I posted a week or so back, I was using a sigma 50mm with a DreamFX filter. You’re right, it definitley adds a little sauce. I’m shooting a project for one of my clients in the next few days on my a7siii, going to use my Canon FD set and see what these images look like 👀

    Yeah I could tell the Sony right away. The Zcam has better roll off in the highlights and is not as sharp as the Sony. I’d love to pair some of my vintage glass with the Sony to take some of that digital edge off.

    Chose B in all but 2 shots... The midtone contrast is way nicer and the colours don’t seem forced... That being said, I did think the Sony was B because the highlight roll-off wasn’t as smooth as A but that might be a grading thing...
    Btw, that “sauce” is colour science 🤙🏾

    • @MacOlink
      @MacOlink  3 года назад

      Nahh man that sauce is more than color science. The z cam footage just looks so organic, and much less digital. So does footage out of a Red/Arri, even the BMPCC cams have the sauce. These mirrorless bodies just seem too digital. I think it’s a sensor/processing thing. Idk. But you’re right, it could also be the way I graded. I’m not a colorist, just an average schmuck hahaha

      @@MacOlink How come you got rid of your ZCAM if you liked the sauce from it bro? Curious to hear your thoughts on this as I know you're a guy that values image quality big time just based off the various rigs and lenses you've had on here

    • @MacOlink
      @MacOlink  3 года назад +1

      @@dna8269 it was a tough decision for me to get rid of my Z but I did it for a few reasons. 1) the A7siii image is just as good if you use the right lenses and diffusion. I’ve been shooting Sony for years and I’m much more comfortable coloring the footage, so that’s not an issue to me. 2) Rolling shutter. The Z has terrible rolling shutter. That’s it’s biggest flaw I’d say. The A7siii has almost no rolling shutter, making the image look better imo. 3) lenses. I’m a photographer too. I’d say 50% of the work I do is photo based, and I need native Sony glass if I want the best results. I was sick of having 2 different lens mounts and multiple sets of lenses. When Sony released the FX6 it was a no brainer for me to sell the Z. I’ll be picking up and FX6 soon..
