Amazing work. Thanks for the video! I am debating a Z Cam vs waiting for the Sony FX6. The FX9 is too big for me but I really want the 4:2:2 10 bit. What would you recommend? I shoot Sony A7iii now.
I liked the image better in the Sony, but I think it's only based on the LUTs you used to Color Grade the footage. Preciate you for the comparison dawg
I think people that doesn't work with camera alot will like the Sony, it is sharp and contrasy , but like you said the creamy look highlight roll off , it's sharp but doesn't feel sharp . When master the color on the zcam it will be a monster .
Great video. It would be great to show the Pros and Cons. I have the A7III and waiting for the Canon R5 to come out. ,but the E2F6 has been on my radar for a while.
Hi my friend. Can I ask you why you didn’t use the s log 3 of the Sony? Being the one that has more dynamic range? And can you share at least 2 secs of your footage at the couch ? I would like to give a try to the color grading and see how both cameras perform Best regards.
I can tell Sony’s footage cuz it has harsh greens and bleeding reds. Most other brands (and even Sony’s own Venice CineAlta camera) have more subtle green tones.
Hey man! Really enjoyed the video! I have like one or two things that I was curious about/would love to see in the future! The first is just a brighter scene, I know that window and those clouds weren’t doing you any favors but i had to check the brightness on my phone cause the scene was so dark! The other is why didn’t you take the money you spent on upgrading the body and buy yourself a line of Cine lenses for your E2 like the Rokinon Cine DS line? And finally if you could let us know which of the like 10000 codecs of the ZCam you are recording with in the future that’d be rad! Overall great vid! I subbed and liked and can’t wait to see more!
Hahaha you’re right, there are SO many codecs on the Z. I shot this in 4k ProRes. It was a. It overcast the day I shot this. I was hoping for a more dynamic scene with harsher highlights. I plan on doing this again soon. Also, I’m not a huge fan of the Rokinon series lenses. They’re built a bit cheap and the optics are okay. I’m a huge fan of shooting on vintage lenses. They just add so much texture and character to and image that is pleasing and unique to me. If I’m not using a vintage lens, I prefer to shoot with Sigma glass. I also am a photographer and about 50% of my income comes from shooting photos. So i have a couple of nice sigma lenses that I use on both systems as well. Hope this answers your question! Thanks for the support!
@@MacOlink I would say shooting in full sunlight and more outdoors, maybe some water shots under the sun. See how it holds with specular flares. Seems like this video was shot on an overcast day.
2 EASY ways to tell the difference: - Skin Tones - Dynamic Range From the very first shot I knew 'A' was sony because of the purple-ing/red-ing of the face. Where Z Cam just absolutely demolishes Sony already. Their color science is already a big difference between DSLRs. And then dynamic range. That's the difference that you're having difficulty explaining. DSLRs just cannot compare to this kind of contrast information. Anyone who wants to take videos seriously, even as a serious hobby, should consider getting a Z Cam. Even BMPCC4K has color issues and it's in the same price range. You most likely won't even have to shoot in Z-Raw because you've already got that range to work with. Absolute killer.
The other dead give away was the handheld footage. Comparing the two, (unless it was due to the grading) the Sony obviously was slightly more crushed in the blacks, but if you notice when he is looking out the window the falloff from the brightest to darkest part of his face is way more dramatic on the Sony, but on the Z cam is so much smoother. That is one of the best things to me about it. With all that said, I don’t think the Sony looks bad at all, the color science is just not quite as good.
I agree. I just switched from a Sony a6000 to an E2 M4. The very first difference I noticed was the noise : the E2 M4 looks like film grain, it's not distracting, and the details are still mostly there. On the Sony, it just looks like crap. Like you said, I think mirrorless cameras are "too digital".

Great video! Also just to let you know, if at all possible you should upload in 4k. RUclips uses a downgraded encoder for smaller channels who upload in 1080, because it is cheaper. So, if you want that really good quality, you need to upload in 4k, as long as your gear can handle it :)
@@TheNefastor I guess the source would be myself. I remember watching a video on it awhile ago, but I did my own testing as well. The 2 main encoders RUclips uses is AVC and VP09. VP09 is the better one. AVC is the worse one. If you right click on a video, and click stats for nerds, it shows the encoder. Take Mac's video here for example. Right clicking it and hitting stats for nerds shows that the encoder used is AVC and his videos max quality is 1080. I suspect the digitalness from mirrorless cameras are due to their higher megapixels. a7s/as7ii have 12mps sensor that's why the image from those two are more organic compare to the a7/a7r lines.
That could be it. But I used to shoot A7Sii before my A7iii and I think the image looks almost identical between those bodies. There’s just something about cinema sensors.

Sweet video dude! Dynamic range definitely gave it away :) How do you feel about not having stills? And also not really being able to take a huge Cinema camera anywhere (for personal use).
Yuval Aloni thanks brotha! I need a stills camera. A lot of my clients actually hire me for shooting stills. I’m about 50/50 stills and video work. The thing about z cam is that it’s so small, if I wanted to I can break it down to be a very small rig.
Nice comparison. I am considering Canon R5 vs Z Cam e2 f6. I love the video quality that the Z Cam has. But I still need a camera for shooting photos. So, do you know, if the video quality come from R5 is too bad compared with Z Cam?

I knew it was B only when you showed the dark wide-shot of you sitting in the chair. That's where you notice the extra stops of dynamic range but for all the other comparisons in even lighting, the difference is so small. Your client would only notice the difference in size of the rig you bring to production. Camera quality is a case of diminishing return, trying to split hairs to notice the difference. Maybe 10-bit 4:2:2 is a noticeable feature for heavy colouring, but I'd prefer to save the money and if it's absolutely essential for the 6k or dynamic range or to just look more professional, hire it out for the day. I was about to buy the Z Cam because of all the amazing reviews, but watching this video has made it very clear that it's not essential. @Mac Olink I owe you $5,000 XD
Lmao! You don’t owe me anything man! I made another video more recently comparing the a7siii to my z cam as well. You should give that one a watch too. But, I agree with you honestly. The difference in quality is barley noticeable. These mirrorless cameras are so good now.
Pricopi Stefan everything was edited and exported on a 4k timeline. I’m not sure why RUclips isn’t uploading in 4k. My last 3-4 videos all look like crap :(.
You should do a workflow video. BMPCC has a smooth process (if using Davinci) but Z Cam needs to. be converted. Bit of a hassle... show us what you did to get it into your NLE
Did you shoot in FF or APSC on the Sony? It almost seems like the Z-Cam has a shallower depth of field. I think the Z-Cam looks better, but shooting full frame on the Sony can help mask the poor codec a little bit and narrow the gap between the cameras.
Don't feel buyer's remorse. If the tool makes your work easier and elevates the quality of work then it's worth it. I started sweating when I placed the order on my MoVI Pro but after getting frustrated with the unreliable Ronin MX (unreliable is an understatement) and I realized how amazing the MoVI Pro was, I stopped stressing. ;)
The A7III footage looks better, the z cam looks too soft. Perhaps you should reupload using 4k. It sounds like what you're really looking for is 10bit video, not necessarily looking to get away from mirrorless.
I did upload this in 4k.. for some reason youtube will not allow 4k playback. It’s weird but I do plan on redoing this test. I don’t think the Z cam image is soft, it more of an organic look. 10 bit is great, but I’ve shot on the GH5 for a while and it’s not the same. Mirrorless sensors just aren’t the same as these sensors in cinema bodies. The highlight roll off is just different. And everything off mirrorless looks too sharp imo. Idk, just my thoughts but I appreciate the feedback!
I'm not a fan of Sony's color science at all. The look feels hella processed and digital. I love the look of the Z Cam series and the BMPCC cameras (including the old one). Congrats on the upgrade! Happy shooting!
great video, very good comparison. I right away knew that A was sony mostly because it was contrastier and the highlights feel DSLR-ish. Also the skintones are magenta/purple in some cases, that really gave away thats its sony. I have A7iii, i like the camera alot, but wishing to get F6. dont want the E2 4k, or S6, because fullframe.. a side note- your video seems too dark to me, but maybe thats my taste. maybe a little more light would help? even some practicals in background?
Hey man, great vid. Looking to upgrade to the Z cam from my Sony A7iii shortly. Just a quick question regarding lenses. I know the Z cam doesn't have a mount for the Sony E lenses. What's your take on lenses? Are you going to invest in Cine Lenses, or just purchase Canon EF lenses. Also, do you know if its possible to get an adapter that will allow me to use my Sony lenses on the E2 F6. Although we're going to keep the Sony's as well, it'll be a shame to not be able to use the Sony glass on the Z cam (especially after investing quite a lot in them). Cheers dude.
Wow! I'm so impressed with the quality of the sony camera. I first thought A was the z cam, but when you revealed which screen was which my thoughts changed on upgrading to z cam f6. I currently own the a7r3 and although the video quality might differ very slightly, the quality would still be better than f6. Thanks for you honest review. It would be awesome if you done a video on how you set up the slog 2 setting step by step so beginners out there can apply the settings too.
Although the Sony was good you could definitely tell the difference in dynamic range. The shadows weren’t as crushed in the zcam. The skin tone colors were more accurate. Also cinema cameras are more tailored for people who need high quality commercials or video productions. For example the z cam has 10 bit 4:2:2 color and the Sony only has 8 bit color. So trying to do any sort of color grading on Sony would be difficult whereas on the zcam you can pretty much do anything you want. For me I could tell right away which camera was which.
Great video dude! Instantly knew B was the Z Cam because of the DR and that softer rollof in the highlights and shadows plus the better color depth. I do think, there were a few shots right at the end where I actually preferred the Sony. Probably because they do really well in lowlight scenarios whereas the Z Cam seemed to lose some of its dynamic range in darker scenes. Keep em coming
I liked it from the moment you wrote 'loser' (in a good way). Thanks for this. RUclips is such a leveller. I bet the image for the z cam has a lot of difference on your monitor. The problem is by the time it gets to 1080 on YT, most of that subtlety tends to get lost.
man i have a A7III too ,i can't achieve such beautiful color ,did you used any luts or just change the settings inside the camera, can you share some tips, thz
Looked pretty much the same IMO other than the skin tones were redder on the Sony. Probably could be corrected out in post tho. But I was watching in 1080p on my phone so there's also that.
Sorry if someone already asked (a lot of comments so far)... what were the exact codec settings you shot at with the E2-F6? Did you shoot ProRes or H.265? It helps to better understand how the cameras compare with each other.
The scene of you standing by the window gave it away. Zcam looked MUCH better during that scene because you could clearly see the better highlight rolloff. Much more cinematic looking.
The ZCam camera depends on the right lenses - I use a full set of Atlas Anna's and it is absolutely fantastic - so much easier to use than the Red cameras I sued to use as well - we might only make ads and music promos but we love it
I mean yeah... The difference is obvious, but I think I like the A7III footage better. I don't know if that's a good or a bad thing, I think it's a good thing, because the A7III can put out great video footage. But great job on the grading by the way.
Before I purchased my Z Cam I went down the road of rigging my A7III and its just not the same. I thought about making a video talking about this. But, using a sony in a cage with a bunch of small rig parts just isnt that practical for me personally. As far as lenses go, I have a pretty good line up. I love vintage glass. But I also have some sigmas, and sony lenses. Vintage lenses are more appealing to me with their flaws and character.
It's pretty hard to do a comparison here. This video has very bad compression artifacts. Would love to see this reposted using a better file at the highest possible quality before RUclips recompresses it again.
A is sony and B is f6, mostly when your sitting on the couch, you can see the dynamic range but on the girls face, I lowkey preferred the skintones when she was leaning on the tree and bench.
Great cam comparison ! But man that Track !! is so incredible! Reminds me of the Sasha Involver days ! Can you please specify the track name :) thanks you so much
Watching from my phone I liked camera A but I knew it was the Sony the dynamic r age gave it away. I’m impressed with how you graded each. Most tests I see with the a7iii doesn’t look nearly as good.
I'm super new to videography/the camera world.a regular person who is not into video wouldn't be able to tell the difference. maybe cuz it's in log settings? (which I'm guessing are the basic settings the camera starts off with?) not sure if the price difference is worth it.. buutttt I could be talking out my ass lol, whaddo I know?
You got to upload in 4k for it to actually be a proper comparison...also the BIT rate is low in this video so you can't tell the details...which as a film maker....its all in the details man. Apart from that...great job dude
Very interesting, I thought the Sony actually looked better. Probably just the edit. Add some more contrast to the zcam and it looks better than sony I'm guessing.
I don't agree. Look at all the details preserved in the shadows & the higlights. The Biggest dealbreaker of the A7III is it's dynamic range. It's horrible & shooting in natural light mid-day is a horrible experience.
i'm a Sony guy, have 2 A7iii's for my job, love them but i knew right away A was the Sony due to the skin tones, the red tint is just meh compared to the Z Cam, really liking all the Z cam stuff i'm seeing recently...maybe time to invest. Great video.
This video has a low bit rate so it's hard to decide, inside I actually liked the Sony more, but outside the z cams colours looked better. But yeah, bit rate on this video was poor so I can't decide too much
hey man, are you absolutely sure that you labelled that last one right? :-D Can you please double-check and confirm that A wasn't Z cam and B wasn't the Sony? Seems to me like all the other ones are quite clear - it's just the last shot I feel like you may have mixed it up or something - but of course, happy to be proven wrong, just please double check :-D
Thank you for the video. Z cam has a somewhat RED feel to it. Before upgrading to RED, I thought A7III was great but only to find out that it's just okay before what the RAW codecs can do. I should seriously look into getting one fo these.
Thanks for this nice video! You are right, it's subtle but noticeable-the Z cam has a more 3d look and there is less blacking out in the shadow areas. Skin tones feel more alive. Overall rich colors compared to the Sony A7iii. However, I wonder about the A7RIV? This is a big camera so not easy to travel with for one person. The Z camera seems to me to be more for those who have a small film crew, including lights, sound, and a dedicated camera operator. For me, even the full frame is too big. I'm going for now with my Sony a6600 and the APSC lenses to shoot while I travel. In the future, if something big really pops, the z cam looks great!
The a7r4 I think would perform the same as the a7iii. Same color science and DR in both of those cameras. The Z cam is def in a league of its own and requires more more work to shoot with. I also have an A6600, I love it!
I did my research on the Z-cam and found out that there is lots of issues & bugs on it. Bad AF, connectors & shuts off or resets while shooting. For me that is a big no no. Mac have you had any issues with it yet?
Mac: good info! Believe in yourself and project your belief in what you're doing. Don't apologize. You're as informed as any and perhaps more than most. Lighten up (the scene). :')

Lmao! You don’t owe me anything man! I made another video more recently comparing the a7siii to my z cam as well. You should give that one a watch too. But, I agree with you honestly. The difference in quality is barley noticeable. These mirrorless cameras are so good now.
Is a cool comparison but i think you should upload in 4k on 4k timeline cause 1080 compression sucks and shifts colors!
i agree, youtube killed this footage.
I'm sure it's much more stunning without the compression of the 1080 and the 16Mb max of youtube.
@@RiseHigh anyway i will kill both footage so the difference still exists
Pricopi Stefan everything was edited and exported on a 4k timeline. I’m not sure why RUclips isn’t uploading in 4k. My last 3-4 videos all look like crap :(.
@@MacOlink damn, that's strange..
In the same scenerio . Feel like getting a cinema camera it's either this or sigma fp right now
wow A cam looks fire, havent watched the whole video which cam is that
Are you happy switching from the e2 to this was the image much different?
Huge difference in dynamic range!
I shot full frame on both cameras!
@@MacOlink my bad, just realised it's the z-cam F6, was thinking of the S6 for some reason!
Better color details in the shadows for z cam, 10 bit really makes a difference. Nice looking shots !
I agree, thanks!
I don't believe is the 10Bit, I believe is the codec
Don't feel buyer's remorse. If the tool makes your work easier and elevates the quality of work then it's worth it. I started sweating when I placed the order on my MoVI Pro but after getting frustrated with the unreliable Ronin MX (unreliable is an understatement) and I realized how amazing the MoVI Pro was, I stopped stressing. ;)
Appreciate this comment man. You’re right. I’ll be making a video about this soon!
Mac Olink cant wait to see it. Keep it up man, I love the content, glad I found your channel.
I’ve had a couple other people say it’s too dark as well. I’ll redo this test in the future!
A third party company is making Sony E mount for the F6. You’ll be able to swap the mount on the camera body and use your Sony glass!
Mac Olink well shit you’ve made my day. Do you have any idea when this will be released? Cheers mate.
I’m not sure but it’s been in the works for months. My guess is soon!
It's interesting, some I was right on, some I wasn't. The A7iii is a good little camera, but the Zcam is something else. E2 user here!
How do you like yours?!
@@MacOlink I love it! I'm just looking at switching into the F6 honestly haha
Great video! Yes I love my F6 as well!!
Its a great camera!
I liked it from the moment you wrote 'loser' (in a good way). Thanks for this. RUclips is such a leveller. I bet the image for the z cam has a lot of difference on your monitor. The problem is by the time it gets to 1080 on YT, most of that subtlety tends to get lost.
Glad you enjoyed it!
man i have a A7III too ,i can't achieve such beautiful color ,did you used any luts or just change the settings inside the camera, can you share some tips, thz
hin to ng video coming soon
Looked pretty much the same IMO other than the skin tones were redder on the Sony. Probably could be corrected out in post tho.
But I was watching in 1080p on my phone so there's also that.
Sorry if someone already asked (a lot of comments so far)... what were the exact codec settings you shot at with the E2-F6? Did you shoot ProRes or H.265? It helps to better understand how the cameras compare with each other.
ProRes 422, full frame 4k
The scene of you standing by the window gave it away. Zcam looked MUCH better during that scene because you could clearly see the better highlight rolloff. Much more cinematic looking.
Dope shoot out, just got an e2 and figuring out zlog. Do youb think shootig in prorehq with a flat profile could achieve the same color as a zlog
Dan Quattro I think flat and z log are pretty close. You can def acheive the same color but the dynamic range is better in log
Thanks
Hey where did you get your FD lens ? Is it modified to canon EF or you use an adaptor ? I have an F6 as well :)
Curious I converted my FDs to EF mounts!
Why not try to bulk up your a7iii into a beast camera with extra lenses instead of the cam?
Before I purchased my Z Cam I went down the road of rigging my A7III and its just not the same. I thought about making a video talking about this. But, using a sony in a cage with a bunch of small rig parts just isnt that practical for me personally. As far as lenses go, I have a pretty good line up. I love vintage glass. But I also have some sigmas, and sony lenses. Vintage lenses are more appealing to me with their flaws and character.
slog noise in shadows. ;(
It's pretty hard to do a comparison here. This video has very bad compression artifacts. Would love to see this reposted using a better file at the highest possible quality before RUclips recompresses it again.
I uploaded this video in 4k. I’m not sure why RUclips decided to poop on this one. I’m most likely going to post another comparison soon
Good eye trainer ;) and yes we can notice the differences between both. Thanks!
I wish you did the test when with the sun out to stress the DR.
raredreamfootage I wanted to, but the sun hasn’t been out in a while over here where I’m from. I’ll most likely do this again anyway.
Both do a great job, but using a dedicated tool for its intended purpose is the way to go. Zcam really impresses me for the money.
Thanks man! I appreciate that!
Ok, which camera is A and which is B camera
Ok, got it at the end of your vid.
F6 looks awesome
You got to upload in 4k for it to actually be a proper comparison...also the BIT rate is low in this video so you can't tell the details...which as a film maker....its all in the details man. Apart from that...great job dude
Very interesting, I thought the Sony actually looked better. Probably just the edit. Add some more contrast to the zcam and it looks better than sony I'm guessing.
I don't agree. Look at all the details preserved in the shadows & the higlights. The Biggest dealbreaker of the A7III is it's dynamic range. It's horrible & shooting in natural light mid-day is a horrible experience.
I knew from the first shot z cam was B it has a more of a film look
i'm a Sony guy, have 2 A7iii's for my job, love them but i knew right away A was the Sony due to the skin tones, the red tint is just meh compared to the Z Cam, really liking all the Z cam stuff i'm seeing recently...maybe time to invest.
Haha they’re all labeled properly!
Thank you for the video. Z cam has a somewhat RED feel to it. Before upgrading to RED, I thought A7III was great but only to find out that it's just okay before what the RAW codecs can do. I should seriously look into getting one fo these.
i was right the DR gives it away the sony looks crushed softly compared to the zcam i like it 5k not that much 2.5k yeah
Let's see that rig, bruh!
Soon man!
@@MacOlink looking forward to it!
AYYEEE RIG CULTURE HOODIE!!!
Gotta represent the fam!
Mac: good info! Believe in yourself and project your belief in what you're doing. Don't apologize. You're as informed as any and perhaps more than most. Lighten up (the scene). :')
Thanks Ken!
lighting is pretty dark. feels under exposed
my zcam flagship is incredible the images are like my nikon d800 still images..
very nice man!!! indeed! I'm a subs now
Definitely prefer the Sony A7iii look
Really? How come?
@@MacOlink Actually probably because I'm still not a full fledged cinematographer yet, and still like that contrasty saturated look 😄
