Epic WW2 Reenactment [Snow Battle for the Bridge] -- South Elgin 2019

- Опубликовано: 9 фев 2025
- German and American soldiers fight each other for keep of the Nijmegen Bridge. Filmed at the 2019 annual Rails to Victory reenactment at the Fox River Trolley Museum in South Elgin, IL. With a sudden late April snowfall, things quickly turned very cold and very wet, but I was happy to finally film a reenactment in the snow. It was well worth the frigid temperature.

All reenactments are done with blank rounds, which means the shells have gunpowder but no projectile. If you are interested in reenacting, just keyword it and look for a unit near you.
Reenactors did their best, this is really good.
Ain't gonna lie, felt like I was watching Band of Brothers.

Do I see GIs actually taking hits! Thats nice to see for once
What’s a gi?
@@maddieplaysroblox1525 GI stands for Government Issue or General Issue. Soldiers started calling themselves this sarcastically and as a joke but it caught on as a nickname for US troops.
its a name for us soldiers which stands for General Issue. meaning basically the average soldier. so hes saying US Soldiers taking hits.
‘Ground Infantry’ also
Ja
My cousin was the German medic. You made him look so cool!
Ethan Weber cool he did a great job on pretending that German soldier was actually shot
Really outstanding acting, almost seemed real
I was a German reenacter here and I must say you made the event look 1,000x better and I was even in it thanks bro.
@Kade Daivis I was one of the guys with the zelt on running over the train track's, my advice is watch a lot of real footage of German soldier and pay attention to the equipment they had and what there uniforms looked like.
@NURI I'm pretty sure it's if you see the muzzle flash. Could be wrong though
When it comes to shooting innthis is it like airsoft pelits or something
@@rykerlaybourne7772 nope there are no projectiles coming out the weapons, just blanks
Im new to this, and Im in love with this.
Do you have to buy the equipment yourself, or can you like "rent" it upon registering for another event?
That SS soldier beating up a pow hahaha. Some of these guys are realy in their role.
SS or not, it does add something especially if one of the "dead" was a close friend.
Matthew Boeding OH NO
As a history buff, I realize it may have been a pretty nice day during the actual battle, as it was on the first day of the Bulge.
The late snow, however, adds something cinematic; between the noise, the camerawork, and the reenactors giving it all they could, it already looked like quite a nasty slog.
6:05 wow that headshot looks real
yeah XD
i was one of the Reenactors here! I was the American with the M1903 Springfield!!! :D (i was soaking wet at 0:57)
You look pretty soaked too lol
NP16 NP16 please contact me i am Even an reeanactor and warnt to Joyn your Group next time ,German wss scharführer!
Why do they have to Cock/Prime a semi auto M1, is it from some sort of law?
Skeletor that’s not an m1, it is a bolt action rifle.
NP16 NP16 do reenactors use real guns
I was one of the fallschirmjagers at this event and it was awesome so see myself in one of your videos, you made the event look so awsome
@NURI nope rubber bullets would hurt way to much, in truth we really don't know when we are hit, we only fire blanks out of out guns, but when it comes to getting "hit" it's more of honor system. At events like these there are usually organizers who oversee and tell all the reenactors what's gonna take place they would uselly say that Americans should take some hits and not the Germans or vice versa but in reality it's mostly what looks best for the crowd.
@NURI watch this video if wanna get a better understanding of it and thanks for asking ruclips.net/video/H6yaGyWcvME/видео.html
Hey ehh what is the age for joining a re-enactment group because for my 13th birthday I’m getting an mp40 and karabiner 98 airsoft rifle so I wanted to know when I would be able to use them in a re-enactment group
@@jakeflfirelegend5377 Depends. For the reenactments that my friends join (they're 17-19) the minimum age requirement is 16y/o. Also you cant use airsoft rifles in the event, it has to be real equipment loaded with blank ammo.
Plot twist: A time traveler went back in time in order to film the battle in colourised footage.
but i see no blood
@@RyuRyo4224 there still wouldnt be alot of blood
This looks like straight from a movie. And the camera moves like if someone was filming on a battlefield during that time just colorized
Looks goods
Man those Germans wouldn't let up on those grenades.
CoD WAW in a nutshell lmao
@@kylesnake7297
Damn! You beat me to it.
@@kylesnake7297
Though I will say, Call of duty 2 is arguably worse about this, if for no other reason than not being able to throw back grenades.
just like the simulations
This was filmed so well!!!
The sound though 👌👌👌👌
I think it's because under bridges it tends to Echo and the sound bounces around
Like Michael Mann did in Heat.
The part where the medic was helping the shot soldier was perfect
im english but speak german. i really want germans to be portrayed fairly in movies and reenactments because not all of them are evil so planners think of the german perspective. not saying this was unfair but just in the future.
Great work, its allways a blast to watch your videos

@@nikoandroman Shit
A battle that the Germans actually won?! That’s rare! But really these guys did a great job in re-enacting, I am currently on a spree of watching these videos because I am trying to to join a unit, wish me luck!
Luck is wished! :)
The gun noise and the ambience make it look like an actual ww2 firefight! Great job!
That camera work made me feel like I was watching a movie!
When I saw “2019” I honestly got excited & thought “oh, that’s recent!” but it then I read “posted 4 yrs ago” & went into shock.
The German soldier of World War II deserves more respect and honor. The vast majority of them were humans like you and me victims of a criminal system that sent them into combat. Like any army, the punishment for not fighting in a time of war was death. A shitty situation for the German soldier who may have not agreed with Hitler but still held by law to do his duty. In fact they fought for their families, for their home country and most notably for their comrades next to them! i'm inspired and fascinated by this great and mighty army. And I think it's terrible that they get so little respect!
Cho that is true but you might wanna read up on Wehrmacht war crimes. But yeah lots of them normal people especially later war when everyone got drafted. Early war in Russia yah not so much. They were on terms with the Slavs being sub human
Agree with you
@@kstreet7438 i did say the vast majority of them. not all of them
That's why I'll tell my son/daughter the truth about the two sides. He will be both axis And Allies.
Waffenssdeutschland, you realize that the Germans killed 6 million Jews and many other innocent civilians too right? And I do agree that both the Soviets and the Americans did horrible things (especially the Soviets) the Germans did the same exact thing and the Allies were trying to save themselves and millions of innocent people from a corrupt Germany. While I do agree that not all of the soldiers in the German military were bad people, their leaders were corrupt and were as bad as the Soviets and way worse than the other allies.
Throwing grenades but they didn't explode, sad :( would be cool though but nice video!
Must be faulty fuses. Someone must have gotten shot for that
New subscriber! Awesome vid man👏🏻
Now this is History!
Damn, they did a pretty good job when they first realized the Americans were there at the bridge. The yelling was pretty damn real. Loved it. Would love to go to this event some day
3:16 oooo is that an m48 I see? ;)
Best colorized footage I’ve ever seen.
I think out of all videos
This one has the best battle audio
Your videos are all amazing and you have got me into re-enactments
Some parts could’ve been better however this the best reenactment I’ve seen so many others look like a fashion show instead of realism
This vid is very good. Nice job filming it!
Wish I was in that. Looks fun.
How do you determine if you are “killed” in a fire fight during re-enactments
ruclips.net/video/H6yaGyWcvME/видео.html
The blanks hit you and when they do you can feel it hit so you know your hit
@@muz2864 No you can't. They're blanks, you can't feel them
@@muz2864 umm... No.
Blanks do in fact shoot something out. But you can only really feel if it’s really up close. For example an actor died while playing Russian roulette with a blank.
Don’t get me wrong, Airborne is really over used and you see a lot of bad impressions
*HOWEVER*
I genuinely like this re-enactment and really great job on both sides. 👌
6:02 helmet for helmet
i think it's padding to make the metal helmet more comfortable to wear
RedTheRed no the American loses his helmet then the German loses his helmet, Helmet for Helmet.
JKhyway ah whoops- my bad
RedTheRed padding? are you talking about the jeep cap? that was worn to keep your ears and the rest of your head warm.
RedTheRed it was made to fit under the M1
Just in case anyone was wondering. The Guns are very much real, and the "ammunition" that they are using is blanks. Basically, bass, and Gunpowder. No actual bullets, or live grenades.
Ecxellent job dudes, congrats from Lima-PERÚ!!!!
This was actually really 👍

Awesome video!
Rare footage of Battle of the Bulge, 1944 colorised.
It'd be cool if they sinced the blanks with some sort of heavy duty Lazer tag system, so you knew if you took a hit.
Very well done!
Wow Very good 😁
Nice no Music.
The atmosphere of the video is fine with out it.
I love these reenactments although I don't believe I'm old enough to get in one yet, but I was curious as to how I could possibly join one whenever I'm of age? Also! I liked how at the end the German punched the American as if he saw them kill his best friend
Many reenactment groups have websites, Facebook pages, etc. Start keywording for groups nearby or in your state and they will have the means of contact available to reach them. I'm not a reenactor myself, but having been in their midst for so long, I know there's a lot that goes into it, and they will be happy to let you know what it takes and what would be required. Best of luck to you! 🤙
@@thetruekingofnorway okay thank you! I was also curious as to what are the age limits? As currently I'm 14 so is it maybe whenever you're 16 and up or maybe older?
@@calmernow I cannot say. My assumption is eighteen for many, but I'm sure I've seen younger, especially if reenacting is a hobby within the family. You'll have to ask with the groups you touch base with.

Where can I found out the event times and places?
Google them in your area
Me and the boys playing nerf:
Idk if i sound stupid saying this but what guns are they using, paintball? Airsoft? I rly wanna know cus it looks real
Blanks. They use blanks in reenactments. If they were shooting any type of projectile they would need eye-protection, which none of them have on.
They are real guns. But they’re using blanks.
good job guys
Saw this was in South Elgin, I live in Illinois right next to a town called south Elgin, I don’t know if it’s the same town but if so, did you do it by the trolley museum
@Sco77y152 Yep, you nailed it! This was at that very trolley museum along the section of their rail line just beneath the Stearns Road bridge.
Nice Video !
What kind of weapons are they using, they sound very real but I know they probably aren’t.
Funny thing is, all those guns are actually real! Their just using blank rounds.
Pretty good. I wonder who the Fallschirmjaeger were...?
lol I was one of them
How do you know when your hit with a blank or when to die at these things? Do blanks fire small harmless projectiles of paper or do these guys just fake die at random
Juan Alvarez nothing comes out.
The point of the re-enactments we do is to present what it would be like back then to the public, not a competition for who is best. All though it can be very fun.
When you see a muzzle flash or there is videos anyway works
People need to start learning that reenactors are not nazis, just reenactors
Reenactors are just there to have fun, and teach.
Actual Nazis shut down things that don't agree with there ideology.
Found myself standing to the right of our medic at the 35 sec mark. Did you take photos as well and did you know the other gentleman that was taking pictures too? If so, does he have a site? Thanks and good work!

Is it decided beforehand who are supposed to “die” or get “wounded “? How does that work?
No I don’t think so I think it depends
I don't actually get how these work. With the bullets, grenades ect. Could someone please explain?
In a reenactment you shoot with blank these are casing with no bullet but only powder. And it is just fair play so if someone aims at you and shoot you just be fair and die. So here you go

What are they using? Blanks or bbs? What are they using for like explosives
They're using blanks. If they were shooting projectiles at each other they would need eye protection. Explosives are detonated at a safe distance and are most likely some mild pyrotechnics. Nothing too big enough.
Ozzy Wozzy got it
How do you get into this kind of thing? Looks really fun.
