- In Cadiz, Kentucky, lived the Champion Family, well known in the community. One day, a neighbour of the Champions heard a shout, it was son Ryan Champion, telling them he was the sole survivor of a brutal massacre, and managed to turn the tables on the intruder. But what was true?

"grow in learning empathy and compassion"
He shot his parents and his sister in the head, that ship has sailed.
But he's just soldiering on. What a hero !
Thank you! Clearly it has…
That bizarre speech really made me lol, trying to put a productive, healing spin on four brutal murders.
'Maybe, sometime in the future, when you've all got over it, we can have a group hug and forget all this nastiness?'
I thought the same thing. You can’t really learn it but you can practice it. He did the exact opposite of practicing empathy. He showed apathy and killed his family.
I also was confused by that ridiculous speech
They adopted him as a baby. Treated him like he was their own child and he killed them all. So sad.
What has adoption has to with it. He should be more thankfull?
@@MrRisingapple Just pointing out a fact
@@Avalonsarrt True. I guess he could have been treated badly. Who knows.

Yep no good deed goes unpunished stop being the hero
Ryan’s upset that police deprived him of spending time with his family at their funeral when he literally deprived them of their life. Sure buddy… RIP to the family & Vito.
I'm sure, in hindsight, the family is so grateful they don't have to live with the memory of his phony and false grief at the funeral.
I DONT KNOW HOW HE PASSED ALL THE ENTRY REQUIRMENTS FOR THE MILITARY .......HE MUST HAVE HAD MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES AT SOME STAGE.
Yeah Vitto kind of got forgotten in all this.
Yes that made me angry.I thought well what did you kill them for
@@peteywheatstraws4909 yes, he did. Ryan was really cunning. To come up with a plan, commit to it, and not break character.
The way these people think they can be the only survivor and NOT be a suspect is beyond me.
Purely spared by the Good Lord cuz obviously you're way too special to be taken away for everyone else to be the losers missing out on your awesomeness!!!!! Life's cruel but God wouldn't be to all the rest of His Children in the fashion of an early untimely death!!!

They adopted Ryan and gave him a loving home. He rewarded that kindness by taking their lives and the life of his sister. Selfish, evil bastard.
Wow had forgotten he was adopted
Wtf has adoption got to do with it. He should be thankful he got adopted as a baby?

@@MrRisingapple yes, of course. He could of grown up in the streets struggling to survive, or bounced around foster care feeling unwanted, but no he was lucky, he was adopted to a loving family.

Seriously, what the hell was that speech about Ryan "growing as a person" while he serves his life sentence? She was so inconsiderate of the victims and seemed to mention Vito as an afterthought.
Same though here. She wished that Vito was murderer not Ryan
It seemed like she was reading a statement he might have prepared
she is a blood-sucking flesh-eating lawyer right?

When you're the ONLY survivor, get ready to be the ONLY suspect.
HANDS DOWN
Learned that from 'Scream' years ago.
lol. True, I was onto him straightaway.
Words that are their weight in gold
Well said 👌
"He was awkward at best when he talked to people," Ryan said, awkwardly.
Exactly!
I literally thought he was talking about himself
Alena Barosa, he undoubtedly WAS!
Awkward is as awkward does.....in Ryan's case anyway.
He is as awkward as it gets imo.
Not only that, but if they only met twice, how would Ryan know this? Ryan claims the victim was awkward but also claims he made inappropriate remarks to the sister. That sounds pretty bold. I’ve met a ton of awkward people and they never said anything inappropriate enough to someone they just met to get such a visceral reaction as to fire them immediately.
'And then that Queen song played".. Mike you can't do that. You can't drop a line like that right before a serious news report talking to the police. I laughed for 5 minutes all the way through, and these sad people were on, and I was laughing and missed everything being said, and I felt great shame cause I couldn't stop. Nice job lad.
I graduated with Emily, that girl had a dream since she was in kindergarten and she lived it. Ryan was 5 years ahead of me, but we ended up in a pretty vast and eclectic group of friends. Our interests included Wrestling PPV parties and a game we called "Manhunt" which was essentially hide-n-seek in the dark with kendo swords. Ryan was always weird, but our group of friends was littered with weirdos from all socioeconomic backgrounds. He never had much run-in with the law aside from speeding tickets and reckless driving. I know he liked to shoplift occasionally but he never was caught. He used to have a green Ford Ranger that can't believe lasted as long as it did, I remember seeing my life flash before my eyes a few times riding with him. Ryan and a roommate rented the place across the road from his parents farm. I remember you couldn't see the floor in his room. It was covered with pizza boxes, pornography, and empty Harley Davidson brand cigarette packs. Soda cans were thrown into the driveway, then ran over for recycling. We used to spend days watching Kung-Fu movies, playing Final Fantasy 7. He was a compulsive liar, but you had to be on your toes because occasionally he would tell some sensational yarn that turned out to be true. I had a falling out with that group of friends and didn't see Ryan for over a decade until all of this had happened. I don't know why he did this. I've heard that he had been using meth, and that coupled with his personality disorders could've put him into a state where he thought he could get away with it. But the Ryan I knew never was a drug user. Emily had dreamed of being a equine veterinarian her entire life. She put in the work, sacrificed her social life, and in the end achieved her dream. It was destroyed in the most horrible way possible.
You must have been so shocked someone you know is a mass murderer. It's hard to believe. I'm so sorry this happened. Poor Emily. So many animals would have benefited from her care as a veterinarian and Vito's child was left w/o a father. (I think Ann looked like a meth addict).
@@isabellind1292 I couldn’t tell if he was but his friend, you could definitely tell she was on drugs. She had meth mouth and had a withered look that’s usually from meth. It sucks because it seems like when living in these areas a lot more people get bored or are unsatisfied with life and drugs are a way to get that excitement they never had which leads to situations like this
@@stansmith2188 Yeah, meth/fentanyl...it's bad all over the place and they're illegal but when you're providing "safe injection sites" like they do in my city and not forcing addicts into facilities to give them a chance to clean up, how compassionate a society are we really?

I think Vito may have decided to not go through with doing the killing and then Ryan decided to use him as bait so it would look like he did it. I feel for his family as well, he had a small child!
Vito also knew way too much about the situation for Ryan to let him live.
I agree with @Ismael
Vito was never actually going to be the shooter, he was always going to be a dead patsy. If the evidence was on the phones it would be in the trial transcript, which is public record.
If he knew about it,he should have told the police.
I do feel sorry for Vito's child. Vito himself don't deserve sympathy for he had chosen to help commit murders of innocent family instead of going to police to stop the murders. He had made wrong deadly decision to be co-murderer to one who has only loyalty towards himself in the end. Vito had 💯 put himself and his own child in this exact situation of losing his own life instead of going to police to prevent these murders as Dad himself and to do right actions in life by his own child. Vito was either going be murdered or face lifetime prison time or execution as co-murderer of crimes committed that would 💯 resulted in his child losing Dad anyways. Vito's child was always going to lose no matter Vito's endings in these murders as co-murderer of murders crime because he had chosen to help in the murders instead of going to police to prevent the murders. Vito didn't have zero concerns nor sympathy towards his own murder victims nor his own child in deliberately choosing be party to murdering crimes. So , Vito doesn't deserve any sympathy for himself since he didn't even considered to give it towards murdered victims nor his own child before murders committed and he did not tried to prevent these murders at any time himself. Vito was no more better than his own co-murderer partner when comes to their murdered victims and to his own child who was going to lose Dad no matter the outcome from being murdered by his co-murderer or by going to lifetime prison time/execution for his co-murderer's premeditated murder crimes even if he had cold feet where innocent family was murdered and he didn't even attempt to stop their murders. Their murdered deaths and his own murdered are 💯 equally as much as responsible, blame and faulted onto Vito too along side Ryan.
I live in this town. Saw Joy, Emily & Lindsey the night before it happened at my daughters grandmothers birthday party, as they were very close to them. We were shocked. It has been really hard.
Just curious, but if it's your daughters grandmother, wouldn't it be your mother or your MIL? I just thought it would make more sense to state that, unless you are estranged from that person so just wanted to acknowledged it was your daughters grandmother.😊

The minute you said he had duct tape on his wrists when he went across the street I knew it was him. It would take 2 seconds to get it off if you were in fact a victim, and with the horror you just experienced the thought "I need to preserve the tape on my wrists to prove to the cops I was restrained" probably wouldn't cross your mind. He wanted it to be present when his aunt/the cops arrived because his victimization was a crucial component of his claim to innocence.

Poor Vito's fate was sealed the moment Ryan asked him to help commit murder. He needed him there to die and take the sole blame, as well as make sure the sole person he'd told his intentions to was also silenced. Vito would die whether he agreed to help or not.
And be said nasty things about him after his death is horrible
Lol wait what? Poor Vito? The dude showed up to kill some innocent people, for money. Why do so many people in the comments section feel bad for him? He might have killed all 3 of them for all we know, before Ryan silenced him.
@@reignman30 Your version of events is not impossible, but very unlikely, and there is zero evidence to support it. He was clearly chosen because he was easy going which made him easy to manipulated and pin the blame on, and also probably a little scared of the guy. We don't know exactly what he told him to get him in that house. I'm guessing it had nothing to do with helping commit a murder otherwise it would risk Vito refusing. That would be to risky, so it's more likely he'd have just told him he needed his help with moving some items of property or something similar. That's a typical request most men will not refuse or think suspicious. Vito was always meant to be the victim who he could pin the blame on.
@@reignman30 It's easy to ask someone to come over to your house and then shoot everyone and blame the random person for the killings because dead people cannot speak. To all Veterans, I'm sending my love. Thanks Mike for the reprieve.
Did anyone catch when Mike said, "then Ryan moved to Cadiz nuts???" HA 😂😂😂😂😂
Nice beginning information about “Trig” county and where the name came from. You always add interesting details. Your coverage is always interesting, non repetitive, and easy to follow. I wish other’s (Investigation Discovery, Dateline, I’m looking at you) would also learn to do this. Maybe you could give them a MASTER CLASS on it, Especially the being non repetitive or redundant in each story?
🌟👍🏻👑⭐️🥇
yes!! I could scream when some crime shows are dragging it out just to keep the suspense. Mike always gets to the point and the throws in some adorable jokes even when talking about such terrible murders. He's the best
That defence attorney speech at the end was pure comedy gold- I could imagine someone like Rowan Atkinson reading out those exact words on stage....
“A vibe that would make old people feel uneasy”
What a weird thing to say.
I thought the same. Why special "old people ". That could be taken as he was to hip and energetic for out of touch elderly
Agree. Odd statements indeed.
How interesting. I found that odd as well, but in retrospect it makes sense.
Yeah… kinda sounded like he wanted to say “not white,” but in a way that’d make everyone ELSE sound racist. Unless Vito skateboarded everywhere while using a smart phone and challenging gender norms, I can't imagine what other “vibe” would make old people “uncomfortable.”
@@Whatlander Well said (& well spotted)! 👏 😂
I have no words to describe a man who takes the life of the very family that took him in, made him one of their own and basically gave him everything he could have wanted. It's beyond horrible, beyond tragic.
uuuuuughhh. theyre parents. he doesnt owe them anything just because they chose to have a child. quit it with that shit
@@bm-ww8kb he was adopted...he owes them everything. He could have been raised in the system, a lot are. Yes, he is lucky to have had 2 people that loved him enuf to make him their own. He owes them.
The fact that they adopted him giving him a second chance in life… And this is who he grew up to be.
My heart absolutely breaks for all the victims, especially Vito's infant son. To have your father taken away from you, and then have the suspect tarnish your father's reputation... that is just pure evil.
True, but if someone tries to hire you for murder, don't just tell your roommate about it and continue to hang out with that person. Turn them in.
But wait..everyone is feeling bad for Vito. Wasn’t he THERE to murder the family for money and just got okey doked by Ryan??
1yr old babies take it really hardvwhen their father's reputation is tarnished
My neighbor locked herself out of her home. So, like a good neighbor I introduced her to our That Chapter family movies. She watched about 4 episodes until this episode dropped. Just like the rest of us That Chaptarians, she just loved our family Patriarch, Mike.
Welcome to our family tell her pls 👋,mikes great 😍,enjoy hun😘😍
Welcome neighbor!!
Your message is first. So it's cut off and it says, like a good neighbor then stops .. I'm thinking, STATE FARM IS THERE!! 🤣🤣🤣
“Here neighbor watch these videos abt serial killers” headass
There are two kinds of neighbors in this world. Those who watch that chapter and those who don't know how to find humor in our existence and end up in one of Mike's little " how not to human" weekly stories. Maybe the locksmith will be hot or at least not a stalker. Cheers! (Or jingle?)
I like the background music & sound effects as you described Ryan's version of events. You dramatic re-enactments are always amazing.
That chapter got me through some rough times. Thank u Mike. And keep up the great storytelling.. makes my day hearing "let's give it a gooooo!"
My names Chris and I’m addicted to your videos more than tacos and I really like tacos.
Damn tacos are pretty good
Nice!
Mmmmmm tacos
What are tacos

Mike.. you have no idea how many Friday nights we've spend together. Thank you for your quality content.

I have seen a number of these stories told on other true crime channels, but I’ll always watch Mike’s presentation because it’s always well researched and produced and Mike is funny and honest.
This one was honestly so heartbreaking. I’ve seen so many of these and this one just seems so senseless beyond any comprehension. Like literally no reasoning at all. Wild.
Ryan’s character assassination of the victim made him look guilty as h3ll.
They always do that don't they lol
Omg, the rush to judgement!!! How dare investigators go in front of the cameras and blame one of the victims before a thorough investigation.
25 minutes away from the absolute horror show outside my house. Everything is either flooding, on fire, or viral. Learning about new crimes with Mike is the best afternoon break activity. Stay safe all of you.
Stay safe you too
25 mins away? But it's right outside your house?
Don't y'all say "y'all" down there? Hooray for proper grammar!

Mike there is no one like you! The information, the delivery and the subtle comedy is genius and we enjoy giving every case a goo with you! Thanks Mike! You rock 🤟👏 👏 👏
I like how Mike stopped talking around it and just gave it a goo.
I read this as he said it. Happens a lot I wonder why.

Mike is a LEGEND... Let's give it a goo!
This is a tragic case, but I couldn’t help but chuckle with the “Excuse Me” bit at 8:18.
And then at 8:28 Ryan said “Not today”
So how are you feeling and making it through all this?
Him: Well, I'm a psychopath and don't have any empathy at all, so I'm doing great!
Well doesn’t take a genius to figure out it was Ryan.
I live close to Cadiz-and there’s plenty to do sober...fishing, hunting, murder apparently

@@vellonteenbilby Where did he say he'd never heard that idiom before? You on the other hand need reading comprehension classes as well as a class on learning how to avoid writing run-on sentences. Try not to look so dumb next time, old timer.
@Danish Viking what does that mean?
@@coryCuc did I mention "never having heard the expression before?" No. You are obviously in dire need of reading, comprehension & spelling classes...🤡
I know his attorney was just doing her job but it really annoyed me when she was speaking on his behalf at his sentencing. There really isn't anything positive or endearing you can say on behalf of someone who murders their whole family 🤦🏾♀️
Being a defense attorney has got to be the worst job on the planet. They have to hear the real truth - every grisly detail - and then try to find either a loophole or sugarcoat it and say trash like this in front of a judge and jury. Gross.
Especially after they've pled guilty. What's to gain?
Oh lord, this is so sad. I cried watching this & i don’t even know the champion family. RIP. God bless those poor souls.
In my family I was the worst kid.
High school drop out.
Homeless for 8yrs.
I never once wanted to hurt my family.
