It wasn't made clear why they came back and killed John. He'd done what they asked of him, couldn't they just have let him go and live out his life on his farm?

I think they did it so they could use John as bait to lead them to all the folks in his old gang, kill them all and then make John think he was alright just to catch him off guard and then kill him. Boom, their mission was complete. All of them are dead. Thats what I think.

The reason why they killed John is because he was a part of the vanderlyn gang it's because he was wanted and they probably saw he was wanted.
