    This is super helpful if you’re like me and are looking for a way to use a secondary m.2 NVMe SSD on a board that has an m.2 slot that you can’t use because it’s PCIe 4 and you have a 10th Gen CPU. Great workaround, thanks!

    • @mikesunboxing
      @mikesunboxing  2 года назад

      it doesn't make a gen 3 slot or drive into a gen 4, think of it more as a pass though so it will use the highest gen it can depending on the slot it is attached to

    • @prqphet
      @prqphet 2 года назад

      @@mikesunboxing exactly, my board has 2 m.2 slots but only one is PCIe 4. Since I have a 10th Gen CPU that slot is disabled altogether, so I only have one working m.2 slot, the PCIe 3 one. But my board has 2 PCIex16 slots, so I can use the second one to install this m.2 drive slot and have a functioning NVMe drive for secondary storage. Much cheaper than upgrading to 11th Gen solely for the purpose of getting my other on board m.2 slot to work.

    I have the ezdiy pcie gen 3 x4 board with a Sabrent Rocket4 500GB on it. Works very good, not as fast as if it was directly on my board, but still good. my read numbers are: 4773, 3008, 503, 55 and the write's: 2490, 2426, 350 and 123. Remember, these drives are Gen4 and are rated for 5000 and 2500. Maybe my board just works at PCIe gen4 even if listed as a Gen 3. The board is plugged in the second x16 slot on my motherboard (Msi x570 Tomahawk) so the bandwidth is there. Really useful for cloning drives, as onboard slots are a PITA to access when the computer is fully assembled. Now, if one of these cards could use tool less fixture...

      @@mikesunboxing And I have a WD sn850 1TB as a boot drive on the top m.2 slot on my motherboard. The read speed are: 6719, 4072 498, 74. The write goes: 5026, 5006,303,205. The revised version of the Sabrent, the Rocket 4Plus on the second m.2 slot goes for the reads: 5788, 2529, 466, 36 and the writes are 4959, 4750,309, 197. So, if you ever want a gen 4 ssd, go for the WD. I did not test the Samsung 980 serie as I don't have one for now, but I'm watching the deal! yes for MATX boards there is a limitation of having a second PCie 16x sized slot to use, and to be fair a lot of them do have that especially boards like the mortar etc.

    Great idea! I've just received a couple Akasa card's, PCIe 3.0 X 4, for the 3 x16 slots jn my A520M DS3H/ 5600G and the Son's ' A320 / 3200G, both using integrated graphics. Pretty sure the son may wish to upgrade sometime in the future, but that will be another Mobo...
    Will go for crucial P5plus drives PCI 4.0 NVME M.2's, as the one I have on the A520 already, has shown up in BIOS without issue (BIOS is as far as I've got). Also the write performance of the P5plus should match or slightly exceed PCIe 3 X 4, 4GB/s bandwidth ( not that I'm likely to stress it)

    The real question is, how many drives can one of these handle?
    I have two 1tb NVME drives on my mobo already, and I've got all my SATA drive slots filled with 512/1tb SSD's and a 4TB HDD.
    I'd like to have the option later on of adding more NVME M.2 slots via a PCIe slot, though because I have a triple-slot GPU my PCIe 4x is super close to my GPU, so I'd like to use a flex cable. For these drives speed is less of an issue.
