    It is the drive that holds the "Gen 3 or Gen 4" ability. The PCIe cards are just links to the computer. You may see the "tracers" on the PCIe cards that will lead from the NVMe to the PCIe slot, and they will give you how many "Lanes" are available. The boards themselves do not determine speed.

    • @herrjohnssen
      @herrjohnssen 11 месяцев назад +5

      Well yes, but this is only partially true. If I put a gen 4 nvme in a gen 3 slot, it will run at gen 3 speeds

    Looking at dual M.2 expansion cards (due to my situation the $80+ dual vs single card saves me $125+) and all I’m finding is lower end Kingston cards. Trying to learn so I’m not missing anything. Got an original M.2 on release (256GB and paid $270ish for it) and I need a LOT more and the port on my motherboard is horribly placed and the drive gets loose and crashes the PC - hence an expansion card. Great video, shocked at low subs - so I’m subbing.

    • @NikosRentas
      @NikosRentas  3 года назад

      Thanks for the sub! Yeah, unfortunately you have to test out different products. I found this one to be the best out of the lot for gen 4. If the price is over 60 or so it is worth to jump up to a 4 bay by asus or gigabit.

    Crystal disk test could bring more real to life results if you stress it by bumping the option on size and amount X times test, would be nice seen if sustain speed improve and by how much.
    My only issue with this products is the pricing, it should be cheap but for marketing reason thy bump price to ridiculous prices.
    If I had to use one I probably go all the way with a 4x M.2 slot and PCI-E 4.0 as even modern system carry that extra x16 PCI-E slot on the side (RIP SLI/CrossFire).

    I had a 3 minute video in DaVinci Resolve and the program stated I didn't have enough to continue thus as you can see I'm trying to take care of the issue with a new system for the next 12 years with build 3. If so maybe I can go with the RTX Ti 3060 8GB for budget.

    Just found your channel, like it very much!
    Can I ask the following as I am struggling to find the answers in the marketing blurb?
    1- on the ASUS Hyper card, does each NVME show up as a separate drive in Windows Explorer? Or does any drives on the board show up as one single drive?
    And 2- does the board use 4pcie lanes in total, or does it try to use 4 per drive, therefore using bandwidth that could/should be used by my flu in the x16 slot at the top?
    I’m very confused 🤔

    • @NikosRentas
      @NikosRentas  2 года назад

      This is a tough one. You need to loop up your motherboard and check to see if it is supported and how. The Hyper card requires PCIe bifurcation to work for all drives from what I understand. I never got one to test because when I look up the specs for my motherboard, I can only one ssd in the slot for pcie_2 and if it is Pcie_1 I can use 3. In theory it should be able to split all 4 drives in the x16 slot going up to 256Gbps on a x570 board but it doesn't. It seems it works better on Intel chip boards. Check out this link www.asus.com/us/support/FAQ/1037507/

    That graph of PCIe speeds you refer is not actual MB slot speeds. On allmost all motherboards (exept TR4) second PCIe slot is x8 electrical, so on that Asus addon card (it is not a RAID card) will let you use max 2 drives. You need full electrical x16 slot for 4 drives. And MB Bios must support bifurcation.

    • @NikosRentas
      @NikosRentas  2 года назад

      Yes, you are looking at PCIe 3.0 speed on the second PCIe slot. TR4 does an x16. This is why I referenced using the top slot if you sacrifice the video card on the bottom slot. I should have been more clear.

    The x4 slot runs at x4 and has a bracket obviously a x4 slot plug on a x16 or x8 is definitely not secured on the slot without a bracket.

      I looked up the MOBO and @Kouderu Ivy is correct. You only have a pcie 3.0 on the first lane and Pcie 2.0 on the other lanes. You won't get more speed than that. I would be looking at a 3.0 if anything. However, how long will you keep the current setup? You might end up with an upgrade and then be stuck with a slower pcie3.0. If you buy a 4.0 you can always use it later on. That being said, who knows what they come up with as we are getting a big upgrade next year with the 5.0.

      Yeah, older generation will take a gen 3. On page 13 of the manual you see quite a few slots. The second x16 slot is a PCIe 3.0/2.0 x8. So really you can get away with any gen 3 adapter. These are generally backwards compatible so if you buy one that is Gen 4 you would be able to use it again in a newer machine when you upgrade.

      Seems that the z490 will have the firmware upgrade to PCIe 4.0 but 10th Generation won't. You would have to upgrade the chip to 11th Generation. The Hyper M2 expansion should work but you need to look at the specifications doc and look at your motherboard and chipset. Here is the link www.asus.com/us/support/FAQ/1037507/ That being said, you won't get the Gen 4 speed from one drive. The idea here would be that you are splitting the slots in the expansion card and creating a raid for the Gen 4 speeds equivalence. So you would need at least two drives. Might not be worth it for that money unless you do go to two drives. At that I would recommend purchasing from where you can return the products as I have heard some people not have issues while other did. Might be just worth it to upgrade the chip.

      If you are mainly gaming you don't have to stress too much much about the speed as long as they are running close to equivalent. I have some videos talking about the caching issues with the 980 pro 1tb and had suggested the SN850 as there are no issues with those. Apparently there was a firmware release earlier in the year that has fixed it but some still have issues. I almost bought a 980 pro 2 tb since it was on sale by 60 bucks however, some people wanted me to test the Firecude 530 so I bit the bullet ad spent 100 bucks more to test it lol. The Firecuda 530 has similar specs for read and write to the XPG you are thinking to buy. Its is a much faster drive and more write capable however, I don't think the average person needs that though. If you look at the idea behind each use case (I am assuming your main use case will use this for storage for the games?) the question you have to ask does it really need to be super fast. In my opinion it is a law of diminishing returns and you only see a 1-2 second load time difference with ssd's from other type drives. So you wouldn't see that much of a difference between a XPG s70 2 tb and the 980 pro 2tb.
      I would definitely test these drives when you get them and make sure to buy them from somewhere you can return them.

      @@NicholasNicolaides Ela megale. That's not good. You would want to run the recovery and see if it reinstalls it. If you have a previous point saved that would work well too. If all else fails, I would plug it into an external drive, copy everything over and reinstall windows on it.
      This might help:support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/you-receive-error-stop-error-code-0x0000007b-inaccessible-boot-device-after-you-install-windows-updates-7cc844e4-4daf-a71c-cd23-f99b50d53e31

    I regret building my first gaming pc in 20 years. Ive had more troubles in one year than ive had joy in my worthless life. I spent up all my money almost every month just in maintenance and having to buy new parts because everything i buy is defect. I want to use my gpu in 16x but i cant because i have a mongoloid m2 nvme ssd that forces my gpu to run at 4x even during max load. if anyone wants to help me im gonna be your personal slave for life.

      Don't be so hard on yourself bro. What are your specs on your pc?

    Makes NO SENSE to spend more than $10 for a M.2 PCIe Adapter! ╭∩╮ᵔᴥᵔ╭∩╮

      Depends on what the need is and the system one has. I have seen issues with the cheaper ones and often is the case that they come from the same factory which makes you question things a lot lol.

    Don't worry about M.2 expansion cards/heat sinks looking pretty bro LOL.😂If society has reached a stage where people are judged on how pretty/ugly their computer expansion cards are, we really have hit rock bottom.😐

    so if I already have 2 m.2 nvme installed on my x570 and if I were to buy the asus 4.0 pcie adapter, take out the 2 nvme I have installed and put those 2 in the pcie expansion + 2 more nvme will I lose any lanes to my GPU? I'm desperate for more memory but don't want to bottleneck my GPU. would it help if I did what I stated in this comment then set it to raid?

      Not sure if you figure this out but its based on the PCIe Lanes. Most likely they are not directly to CPU so you wouldn't lose the speed for the card. That being said, if you test your card on both slots you will see that you are not losing that much overall as the cards from that generation are running gen 3 speeds.
